And here I am for the first time.

Firstly, very excited to finally be posting on this forum. Usually, I just lurk and soak up precious insights, but I thought it’s time to become more of a producer. As it’s my first time posting, here’s a quick introduction… (skip next paragraph for the actual topic)

I am an 18yo student from Bulgaria. Grew up comfortable middle class thanks to my mom who's a lawyer taking home a good salary. However, seeing her struggling with stress issues due to overworking herself made me question if I want to be slaving away at a job I hate in the future just to provide well for my family. So I naturally was curious to find an alternative. That lead me to look for answers in books. I began reading a book every week about entrepreneurship, self-development, finances and human psychology. Among these books was my favorite to date. I think you may already know which one. Since I read TMF this desire I had to do something better with my life turned into real determination. Now the plan is to secure a life of financial freedom for me and my family and retire my parents as soon as I possibly can.

After some action faking and wondering what direction to go in, last week I finally decided I will build a Google ads agency specifically aimed towards e-commerce stores. Basically, the purpose of it is to generate more traffic, leads and sales for these businesses through Google Ads. I know, not very innovative at all and even pretty saturated. But I have faith that if I put in the effort and do it right I can definitely make it work.

So here’s the issue: I need to find possible clients.

Cold Emails, Facebook and Instagram DMs might be a good choice to reach out to my target customers. But where can I find them? Should I find a niche and only look for prospects within it or go broader at the start? Look for local business owners in my city despite the fact the pay being much less or look beyond?

If you guys have any recommendations I would love to hear those! Any other advice or criticism is also appreciated.

Once again, very grateful to be joining this truly special community! I hope to learn a lot here and be a useful presence to the best of my ability.

Welcome Zlatin! Pretty much exactly the same as you, except I’m doing email marketing. I’ve gotten a client and am getting a pretty high response rate to cold email outreach, so hopefully my advice helps you.

Choose the niches where you understand the customer the most. If you purchase fitness clothes all the time, you’ll be able to deliver results for fitness e-com brands, because you know what makes customers tick. If you don’t understand the stores’ customers, you won’t be able to make effective ads.

I wouldn’t limit yourself to only local or only one niche. Go to all businesses you believe you can help. I also wouldn’t worry about how much local businesses can pay. The most important thing to go after is experience and proof that you can deliver results. Smaller clients may only be willing to pay you 50 dollars a month, but if you bring them awesome results, you can leverage that in the future so you can get a 500/m client, then a 1000/m client, etc.

To find clients, there’s a ton of ways. You could go to the instagram of a large brand you could make good ads for, then click the button to see similar accounts. You could use social media search tools to filter accounts with less followers. You could search up ‘restaurants near me’ and see if they’re running Google ads. If any shops or stores you know are having trouble, maybe your ads would help.

Also, when you are doing cold outreach, for the love of God, please don’t do it like I was going to and how 99% of ‘agency owners’ do it. Sending 500 emails a day using lemlist with a personalized first line and “you’re leaving money on the table my agency helps business owners scale to 6 figures please pay me blah blah” won’t work, because they are getting 50 other identical emails every day. If you do that, you look like an advertisement in their email, and will be moved to spam where advertisements belong. Instead, offer value in your outreach. Make an example Google ad for their company and offer it to them in your first email for free. Yes it will take a lot of time and they probably won’t respond. But you’ll have a much higher response rate because you’re sticking out from the crowd, and you’re starting the relationship off on a good foot. Plus, you’re improving at your skill in Google ad copywriting.

Very important: Focus on the problem right in front of you. You don’t need a good sales meeting script. You don’t need a contract, onboarding process, website, logo, llc, business card, $1000 home office setup yadayada. You only need meetings to sell people your service. First book the meeting, then start panicking how you’re going to sell them.

Also, don’t be discouraged if people aren’t responding. It’s part of it. Just stick with it, keep offering value in your outreach, and it will work out. I think that blind faith that things will eventually come together as long as we’re consistent will help us both.

Make your goal at first not to be an agency, but to be a freelancer that delivers kickass results for people. After you’ve gotten some clients and think it’s time to scale, then you can start to transition into an agency.

I would check out Iman Gadzhi on YouTube. No need to buy his course, he has plenty of free information. His student interviews are very motivating, because it shows it’s really possible to make money doing this. Also for Google ads, I believe @Andy Black has tutorials on it, and awesome advice in general.

What sort of lawyer is your mom? Is she they type that may benefit from attracting more clients through Google Ads? You might start with her or perhaps her associates. To begin with, don't worry so much about getting paid, but getting people results. Once you have a reputation for getting people results, people will recommend you through word of mouth. Also perhaps start a blog or a YouTube channel that provides advice for individuals in your target audience that might help them improve their marketing efforts. If you provide loads of value, people will be more willing to become your clients.

Grateful for the comment Mat.

My mom is a corporate lawyer. For most of her career she has had just one client - a big local chain that's going bankrupt soon. That's her only client. Due to growing up in socialist times she doesn't really believe in things like spending money on marketing her firm but I might be able to convince her to try it out at least. It will definitly be good to start building a portfolio.

One thing I'm really determined to do with this agency is to go above and beyond what clients expect of me. If my services are of really high quality and my customer care is on point the power of a Productocracy will kick in. I would rather work for free than be like the majority of ad agencies who provide the bare minimum for their clients.

Thanks for the valuable advice Ethan. Nice to hear you have already gotten your first client. May I ask you to describe how you felt the moment they said Yes?

You are absolutely right about wanting to help people as a purpose rather than just making money. I personally see the pay as a way to measure where I'm at but I agree that at the start it doesn't really matter.

As for the problem in front of me, getting my first client is all I'm thinking about. It won't be easy but that actually motivates me even more. Only thing that matters is this. Getting my first Yes will be the concept validation I need to really double down on this business. Until then I'm going to outreach as much as possible through multiple channels. I'm thinking I'll do
cold emails as my main and supplement that with IG. I also want to get into cold calling as I hear its really good with establishing a connection with the prospect. I will do multiple channels for each lead to increase the chances of a response be it a No or a Yes. What I'll really focus on is making each interaction personalized and valuable for the client. My strategy for outreach is Quantity but not for the sake of Quality. I love your suggestion of showing them what I do and how it would look for their business. I also see a lot of agency owners using Loom to make personalized videos and supposedly get really positive results.

I have been watching Iman Gadzhi's content on YT for a few months now. It's one of the reasons I got the idea of starting my own agency. Very inspiring and relatable story. His free stuff really is a goldmine especially if you look at the older videos from before he started his agency course. Literally most of the contents of it are out there with 5k views meanwhile people are paying thousands for the exact same thing. Mind blowing.

@Andy Black's tutorials are truly great. If you are reading this mate, you are a G.

The most important thing for us is to just stick to this project. I keep hearing stories about agency owners who got their first client over a year after they started. Keep chipping away everyday and soon we will be the ones making courses haha.

OK, about to go message 50-100 people. Fingers crossed I get a meeting for next week!

Good for you. I don’t think providing Google Ads for eCom is saturated. More businesses are selling online nowadays. Don’t discount lead gen though.

I did a 2 hour call for @Fox ‘s program where I presented how I got started, what I’m doing to scale, and answered a load of questions. Basically… Start by saying Yes. Scale by saying No.

(FYI… That recording is in @Fox ‘s paid membership and my paid membership.)

I can’t comment on outreach as I’ve never done it. I suspect it works better when you’ve really dialled in who you’re targeting and what your offer is.

I got started by helping people face to face or in online communities. Starting out I advise people to join communities of peers and make friends, build relationships, and create win-wins. For you it might be Facebook groups of business owners in your location (since you’re also a business owner in that location), freelancers, agency owners, or people using some software you use. (I personally avoid Google Ads groups like the plague.).

Check out thread “How to use forums and Facebook groups”, including post 103 I added recently:

Hi Andy, thank you for your input and all the great stuff you post on this forum.

I love the idea of joining a community of local business owners. I will have a look for those on FB.

I’m not quite sure what you meant by “don’t discount lead gen”. Maybe it’s because English isn’t my first language. Could you elaborate on that?

If you want to get into Google Ads freelancing then I suggest you take on lead gen and eCom and figure out over time which you prefer. Rather than deciding before you’ve experienced either.

Ok, I get it now. Go broader at the start then narrow down on what seems the best for me when I’m more experienced.

Grateful for your advice.

To be honest, I didn't really get the same feeling of euphoria most people get since I got them so easily. They let me into their email manager before we even had a call lol.

Let's try and both have at least 3 clients before August 15th.

Здрасти и успех, Златине! First, best of luck! It's great that you have decided to start on that route.
To build some practice, testimonials, and validation, you can start offering some free services to friends and people you know. Something as simple as Google Business Profile optimization might bring quick results for your clients and get your foot in the door for upsells.
For outreach, I agree that you should get personal - let's say, you find a bug in a website, a badly designed ad, a broken page, etc. You can send them an email and suggest them to fix it and if they cannot, you can offer to do it.
Someone suggested networking. Have you checked SoftUni? Their courses are on a very high level with practical projects and real-time feedback (I finished their program online). Another thing they have is Facebook groups for students where you can ask the other students, the instructors, and the mentors any questions you have. Plus, you build a network with other marketing professionals.
Mind that your clients might need different services and the bigger your network (or outsourcing skills), the more business you can get - graphic design, website design and development, SEO, etc.

Hi George! Thank you for your advice.
I am already helping my dad run Google Ads for his online business. I'm also talking with another relative to help them with their online store to do the same. All for free. Basically trying to build a portfolio and testimonials I can show to clients.
I agree that reaching out by offering value is much more successful than straight up offering services. The only responses I've gotten so far have been from giving away something like free tips.
I have watched some SoftUni courses from past years but they seemed too basic at the time. Now I checked and saw they have more advanced courses in digital marketing. I will definitely consider those.

It’s going well but still figuring out the best way to get clients in my case. I was actually just thinking of writing an update.

Right now I’m finding local businesses on IG and I reach out to them by giving away some tips or strategy I have already made as a template like 5 tips for marketing your gym. Reciprocity is really powerful and they respond a lot of the time. Also try to be as personal as you can without spending a lot of time on one lead. That’s my advice but I’m no expert yet.

Thank you for sharing this George. It seems like a great opportunity to learn from professionals. Unfortunately I can’t travel to Varna right now since I’m dealing with some stuff at home. Would have loved to attend though.

In the first phase of your search, you will be better off focusing on those niches where potential clients will actually be interested in your services. Think of the expression, "Not the only you looking for clients, clients are looking for you too!". You need to find exactly the kind of people who are likely to say, "This is what I've been missing." Look for companies, responsible people, startups and agencies. A emailing can be very effective when you a) find the right niche and b) find the right people. Point b) you can easily automate with the right tools. There's a tool for finding emails on websites, through Linkedin profiles, by name, plus entire databases of available email addresses. I found a tool for me that combines everything - Bulk email finder - look up company's email address with GetProspect batch email finder tool. That way you can find the people you need and their contacts. It's more effective, and it gets a higher response rate. Such a point strategy with good targeting will definitely help you get started.

Yeah man you're right on that. Much easier to sell people who already want my service than to convince random ones that they need it. Thank you for suggesting this software. I saw how one guy was sending automated messages with a tool like that. Seems like it saves a lot of time as it's been pretty time-consuming to look for the contacts of each owner/manager of the companies I'm trying to reach. Will definitely give the tool a try.

Zlatin, I just saw that Netpeak are organizing a free academy for young entrepreneurs in Varna. You can apply.

Zlatin,

I found this article from Etien Yanev with a few mentorship programs available in BG (short deadline) in Sofia, other cities or online.
