Hi everyone! My name is Kayla and I am 19 Years old, turning 20 in February. I'm super excited to be apart of this forum to connect with awesome, likeminded people!

To start off, I am a Makeup Artist located in Columbus, Ohio who aspires to become an entrepreneur. I have a passion for makeup and the beauty industry and I love transforming the way people look and feel about themselves. I've been doing makeup on myself for almost 6 years now, but I just started freelancing not even a year ago.

This all started last year when I had a wake up call, mostly all because my boyfriend of almost 5 years told me what he wanted in life and that he didn't want to be living the slowlane lifestyle forever. I never realized how the system worked and that I was basically under a spell. "Go to school, get a good job, save 10% of every paycheck, retire, then die." To me that is something that really scares me now. Why would I want to live life without achieving anything I want or dream of? I always knew there were people out there who were living their dream becoming millionaires, but I never thought that could be me. Until Now.

I didn't really start taking action until around the middle of 2017. A lot of that year was me being an action faker. I knew what I had to do, I just didn't want to leave the safe feeling of my comfort zone. Once I stopped bullshitting around and really realized that my time is something that I should value more than anything, thats when I started taking control. I started watching a lot of youtube videos on mindset, taking action, and just educational videos like TedxTalks, Gary Vee, Brian Tracy, Bob Proctor, Lisa Nichols, Simon Sinek, and a bunch more. I'm changing my mindset completely, from living the sidewalk and slowlane to living the fastlane.

After reading Think and Grow Rick and TMF , I had a serious kick in the a$$ about how I was thinking and living. It needed to change. Now I can say that I am more focused on the process then the result. As of right now I'm freelancing on models and working with different photographers to build my portfolio and to just get out there. I have recently started a blog about what I know about makeup application, tips and tricks, reviews of products, and more. What I am trying to achieve is owing my own makeup brand. I don't want to create something new, but make the existing products better than everyone else. I've been doing a lot of research on what brands lack, problems, solutions, and ways that I can be a producer and not a consumer. If you read this whole thing and have any questions, tips, or anything else to help that would be awesome! Thanks for reading!

Hi everyone! My name is Kayla and I am 19 Years old, turning 20 in February. I'm super excited to be apart of this forum to connect with awesome, likeminded people!

Great introduction and welcome to the forum!

If you haven't read UNSCRIPTED yet, do so immediately. It is basically the blue print to your Fastlane world. The good news is that is seems like you are on the right track with creating your own makeup line meanwhile you are doing makeup to pay the bills.

Doing the blog will be a great way to gain a following and to have someone presell to later on. That is the long game though. Your time may be better spent if you start working on your value adding makeup products now and test the market with your ideas until you find one or a few that really stick to make an actual product out of.

The only other bits that I want to add is that as you know, now it's time to take action. Youtube videos and podcast are great, but it's time to start watching videos and reading books about your current problem, and that's creating a makeup line. No more motivational stuff.

That being said, there are plenty of threads within the depths of this forum that will help you create your product. They may not be makeup related, but the theory applies. The search function will be your best friend, so will an INSIDERS subscription. Follow MJ's prompts about reading the GOLD threads first, and the rest will follow.

Again welcome to the forum and hope to see you around.

Thanks so much for the feedback! UNSCRIPTED is my next book on my list to read. Taking action is my main focus as of right now and I will definitely take your advise in getting the INSIDERS subscription. My only thing is I don’t know how to start making products on my own. I know problems that are in the beauty industry and that’s my main focus for my brand, to create a solution as well as value. I will for sure watch videos on creating a makeup brand once I finish typing this! Thanks again!

Awesome intro Kayla, well-written (and punctuated, lol) and well-articulated on what you want (and don't want).

Welcome aboard.

My only thing is I don’t know how to start making products on my own.

No one starts with all the knowledge. We pretty much all begin this journey in diapers. Acknowledging that process is a start, and for makeup, I'd gather it would start with an investigation into the industry, ingredients, manufacturers, etc.

What I am trying to achieve is owing my own makeup brand. I don't want to create something new, but make the existing products better than everyone else. I've been doing a lot of research on what brands lack, problems, solutions, and ways that I can be a producer and not a consumer.

In Unscripted I discuss this a bit more, pay attention to value skew, value attributes, and value arrays. I think with makeup some attributes would be packaging, naturality, animal testing (or not) and branding.

Hey Kayla,

I was about to link you to some threads, but just realized your not an INSIDERS (you can't view them). We have a couple people in here in the beauty niche, myself included.

Most noticeably, @Iwokeup gold thread, which I learned a lot from myself and referenced back to when I was starting out.

I would definitely recommend becoming an INSIDERS, there's tons more info you can learn from everyone regardless of what business they are in.

Also checkout Chemists Corner – Cosmetic science resource site where you can learn all about cosmetic chemistry if you haven't already. Its targeted towards cosmetic chemists but theres a bunch of articles + a forum that is really helpful for entrepreneurs in this niche.

Thanks so much for the advice MJ! Yes I’ve been watching videos so far on product ingredients, packaging, and labs. Still in the process of learning everything! I will be getting my hands on UNSCRIPTED soon, I can’t wait!

@Kayla Spriggs,

Great to see you on the forum and to see how you have done your homework.

Branding is a serious issue and one that I suggest you control yourself rather than leave it in the hands of graphics and marketing "experts".

I have seen too many instances of designers just showing off their graphics skills rather than thinking seriously about the message and the demographics. They should be thinking about how the target market thinks and what their wishes, "needs", hopes, desires, and expectations are, as well as what you can do for your clients.

You will almost certainly have to contract out some of the branding and labeling work, but if you think about those factors yourself, you will be in a position to CONTROL the outcome.

The great thing about this forum is that we have people from all sorts of industries. Lot's of beauty/health entrepreneurs on here. A big chunk of my private label business is in the beauty niche (skincare + equipment). Very competitive niche, however, with the right marketing, and as @Walter Hay said, with the right packaging/branding, it's a very lucrative market.

I think we have a lot of shy guys on here. So I'll be the first to say, you're hot. Lol, welcome to the forums.

@Kayla Spriggs - Welcome to the forum! Can't wait to see what you come up with in the near future! Sounds like you have a great attitude and mindset. Glad to have you here!

Totally inappropriate.

Don't confuse shyness with maturity.

The reason you don't hear a lot of "flirty" talk on here isn't shyness - it's because we respect women as equal a$$-kickers in this lifestyle. They are busting a$$ just as hard as the men on here.

If another woman was trying to figure out if this is the right community for her, and saw your post about how hot another women who just joined was, would that send the right message? Of course not.

Knock it off.

Holy sh*t... What's up with some people on this forum lately? How does my post have anything to do with women rights and all that other feminist bull crap? And when I say shy guys, it wasn't meant to be taken literally. It was a joke. Man, I miss the 2013-2014 years of this forum.

You literally took my post to a whole new level. Anyways, we can talk feminism and all that shit if you'd like, but, that was not my intent. @MJ DeMarco @Vigilante If you guys think my post was offending or inappropriate and might trigger some feminist forum members away from this forum, feel free to delete it.

I don’t think @JAJT ‘s reaction is rooted in feminism.

This is an entrepreneurship forum- where the only thing that matters is the quality of people’s ideas. What they look like is irrelevant.

Let’s flip the tables. Let’s say you’re a male model seeking to create a new supplement line. But instead of getting legit feedback on your idea, all you get is a bunch of women saying “ omg, can I lick your abs?!”

It would be F*cking ridiculous.

Btw I don’t think you had any intended disrespect in your post - everything about it other than the last part was great.

Just my two cents.

@Sully1994 hit the nail on the head.

I'm not a feminist, nor a "white knight"
I don't care for the SJW movement
I don't like safe spaces
I don't like the rapid spread of anti-intellectualism sweeping North America right now.

I do, however, care about women feeling welcome in this community.

Maybe my words were harsh - sorry. But I don't consider calling out a new female member as "hot" the second they join as an inviting invitation to participate in this business-oriented forum.

Fair enough. I totally understand where you're coming from. Just know, I wasn't trying to offend her or other females in anyway. I guess the high testosterone got the best of me.

@MoneyDoc - Please don't confuse feminism or ridiculous SJW crap with simple respect and professionalism.

If myself, @Vigilante, @AllenCrawley @Andy Black @Carol Jones Kayla, and our special guest, Elon Musk were all sitting around a table in a conference room discussing business and you walked in before sitting down and said to Kayla, "Damn girl! You hot!" would you view that as an acceptable interaction? And how would the other women at the table view that?

I think you're confusing business professionalism among relative strangers with high school hallway banter. If this forum was known to be like that in 2013, I'm glad it's not the case any longer.

This forum already lacks a significant female presence -- it doesn't help when we treat the forum like a high-school boys locker-room.

Just something to consider among our interactions.

Carry on.

Good morning @Kayla Spriggs from Oz,

What a powerful introduction! I love it!!

You only need to do three things to succeed.

Become an exceptional entrepreneur.

Produce exceptional products.

And never give up.

How you achieve this is unmapped for you. You have a clean slate. And you will learn the way to success like all of us do.

By doing things.

And making mistakes.

And learning from your mistakes.

It's not an easy road. But it is easier for you. When I started, there was no internet. I learned from reading books. Meeting people. Joining associations. Mixing with people who I could learn from.

And by just doing what I thought I needed to do to get from A to B. And then to Z. Doing things I really didn't have any experience with. And picking myself up when I fell flat on my face. Which. In the beginning. Was often.

Never let anyone convince you to give up on your dreams because they're not happening as fast as they think they should. Or as fast as you want them to happen. If you keep working on them, and finding ways to move forward, they will happen. Perhaps not as you envisioned them. But they will take you to places you never dreamed possible.

You already possess charisma. And style. And a beautiful way of expressing yourself. That in itself is exceptional. Build on that. And take advantage of all the knowledge in this forum. And all the men and women who want to help you.

I've no doubt that you will become an exceptional entrepreneur.

And produce exceptional products.

If I can ever help you, please let me know. ~Carol❤

Greetings @MJ DeMarco from Oz,

I'm older than most of the members of The Fastlane Forum. I still remember the days when people were addressed as Miss. Mrs. Mr. In social situations. As well as in business.

Those rules really came crashing down in the 1980's. And I was very much in favour of that. I loathed being addressed as Miss Jones. Or the more acceptable Ms Jones. I much preferred being called Carol. By everyone. Including my staff.

But.

There should always be a line drawn in the sand in business. And that line separates the men and women who have the utmost integrity and respect for their business peers. From those who have yet to recognise that guidelines are the foundation of professional relationships.

I belong to many business groups. Living and working from my remote rural property in Australia, most of those groups are now online. Much like my participation in The Fastlane Forum.

One of my groups did an interview with a well-known businessman. You will know who he is MJ.

There were two entrepreneurs in the group who shared the interview roles. Both males.

At the beginning. Each entrepreneur introduced himself to the guest. When the second entrepreneur said his name, the guest responded with:

"Hey *****. You're a good looking dude. You're a modern day Cary Grant. I bet you have girls . . ." and I've forgotten the rest. I was still fixated on what I considered to be an inappropriate comment. Made more inappropriate because the other entrepreneur wasn't included in the compliment.

I have no idea how these two young men felt because the camera wasn't on them when the remark was made. If they were embarrassed, it's a shame. Because this interview is up on YouTube. To be viewed forever.

May I also add that both of the entrepreneurs conducting the interview are of such a high professional standard, it would be unthinkable for them to treat anyone other than with the highest level of respect. They would never initiate a conversation like the one above. They are real pros when it comes to drawing a line in the sand.

We all meet beautiful women. Extraordinarily handsome men. In our business life. Compliments are always a bonus. But they should be given discreetly. And in private. ~Carol❤

~Carol❤
Thank you so much Carol! I’m sorry I’m just now seeing this, but I love the feedback! I’ll be sure to post my process on the forum❤️

Thank you so much! I’m happy I joined!
