A person on the forum approached me recently and ask me "How can you change your value on this forum".

For reasons that are my own, I decide to leave this person anonymous and post my response as its own thread. I promised this person I would answer 3 questions, so here is the first.

If you are worried about changing your value on this forum you are focused on the WRONG things. You are seeking the approval of others.

Now in business, whether people admit it or not, we do seek the approval of others for our products, our services, even on some level ourselves.

So I am not the type to tell you "It doesn't matter what people think." The market speaks. You should learn to listen. The importance of reputation is discussed over here.

But gaining our, the forum's, approval isn't and should not be your goal. Forum approval is simply a signal that you might be on the right path.

I stress MIGHT.

There are people with forum approval who aren't building businesses yet. Really capable people too. There are people with forum approval who have failed at businesses. Really capable people.

Forum approval guarantees you literally nothing. This forum score next to my name doesn't actually mean anything. (At least until I pass @Antifragile and then it will become a super important metric. Haha.)

Jokes aside, stop worrying about forum approval and start worrying about yourself. Your goals. Start working towards your goals. Imagine the kind of man or woman you need to become in order fulfill those goals.

AND THEN BECOME THAT PERSON.

Ok, since that probably isn't the answer you wanted I'll acquiesce to the spirit of the question and highlight a concrete example of someone who has begun to change their value to the forum.

As recently as a few weeks ago @Kak labelled @Droopynips something like the worst poster in the history of the forum (not an exact quote, these are my words, but his sentiment.) This sentiment was earned given the behaviour in this thread.

But now in this thread forum members are jumping in to help him. People are follwing his YT channel. They are speading his video. People are starting a campaign to get him on the Kyle Keegan radio show

How did this happen?

I'll break it down.

1. When Droops was getting dragged, the forum actually came up with a new scoring system for posters. I mean, that is one way to have an impact, right? Don't be that guy.
2. But after a little bit of whining, Droops actually adjusted his approach on the forum. His first share of how he overcame alcoholism definitely got some people's attention, both because it was a powerful authentic share and because his entire writing style changed. He used punctuation and capitalization and intelligent word choice. People noticed.
3. On some threads he still cracks jokes and some of his posts miss the mark, but you can tell he is at least trying to provide value and thoughtful ideas. Or jokes. Whereas before everything he did felt like a troll, now it feels awkward at times but at least it is authentic. (Or maybe @Johnny boy is right and he is fooling us all/most).
4. And this I believe is where something changed.

I was able to accomplish 12 rounds of sally up today thus breaking the current world record. Definitely the most physically taxing thing I’ve ever experienced.

He said he was going to do something hard and assuming that is him in the video, he did it. This video shows follow through, grit, and determination.

Droops displayed excellence.

So to the question asker I will ask this:

What are you excellent at? What do you want to be excellent at? What steps do you need to take to become excellent at those things? Even showing the process towards excellence can provide value to the people on the forum.

The sooner you start asking and answering questions like this for yourself, the sooner your life will begin to look the way you want it to look.

And then you can share the lessons of your life with the forum and the forum will take notice.

Hope that helps you.

I will say his posts have gotten a lot better.

I can’t believe it, but he is now a very surprising turnaround story others should actually take note of.

Apparently his forum handle got better too.

The thing is, forum approval doesn't really mean all that much. You could be building the world's greatest business and fly low on the radar here on the forum. It is what you make it. Building a thick skin is very valuable, especially if you wanna be in business.

That being said, this place is awesome, and it's great to share knowledge and experiences with everyone here.

It's OK...don't be too hard on yourself.

Many of us need more time than expected to learn what it takes to master our industry, build our networking, and yes...collect more nuggets to share here on the Forum.

I personally feel that when I first came here onto the Forum, folks used the 'tough love' bandwagon as an excuse to be a lot rougher and more insensitive in their posts. And we forget sometimes there are real people behind the usernames, who might be hurting more than we'd think after a biz mishap or two. Could be family issues too behind the scenes.

But after the COVID ordeal, I find we've all come to be more sensible (despite the recent slew of posts)

My take on this is that this Forum shouldn't be our ONLY place to network.

This place can be our starting ground. There is a wide world out there...and there are many potential employees, partners, mentors, peers, clubs, meetups out there to find Fastlane-ish folks.

It just takes some careful planning and guts to find out where they gather...and to go meet them.
(I could share some tales on that...)

The good news is that you will find many ways to give back to the people you meet. It can be as simple as a job referral, some support for whatever charity they help out at...many ways to provide value. Listen to what problems or work they tell you they are most concerned about...

Let's go build wholesome relationships in real life, instead of just screen-to-screen.

Of course, if one day I can teleport to a Fastlane Summit...I'm game for it.

Focusing on peer approval will get distracted from the KPI that matters for himself or herself.

In the trading space we used to say the P&L doesn’t lie. At the end the day focus on what matters to yourself and your own goals. Approval or disapproval form peers are not going to change that.

You can write wonderful post on self improvement. No amount of peer approval is going to change your vis fat percentage, personal net asset value, or new sales in your current business.

If this is true then this is maybe my greatest achievement

You can't take all the credit for this one chief. ;)

Aim higher. Lol.
Hey amigo, thank you for the thread. I am also free from being moderated at last, what a time to be alive.

I am very introverted so making more videos may be a tough endeavor, but taking from what @Andy Black said, hopefully my overall effort will translate to some fastlane venture. You guys are the best

Great thread @BizyDad would like to add my 2 cents -

Ask lots of questions, take action on what people say to you, and then tell them. And if you admire someone or something they said, tell them that too.
