Hi,

I'm 22 years old doing a business degree concentrating in entrepreneurship. I run a social media page since freshman year of college that generates me zero money but I've built an audience of about 3,000 people and counting, and just recently I've offered to sell merch and much of my audience is open to the idea. This won't generate me a lot of money right now or in the near future but it's something that is continually growing slowly with me posting content every day. I have a part time contract job working as a digital marketing assistant at an e-commerce agency for $15/hr, do Doordash for extra cash, I've freelanced for a single client for SEO for a $20/hour for 40 hours but I don't enjoy the process too much, and now I've just pivoted to deeply learn the skillset of copywriting which I plan to make a full time living freelancing since it's a lot less labor intensive and more scalable than selling SEO services. I'm going to graduate college 1/2 a year late since I switched majors 3 times (from 2 engineering degrees to business), but I will have no debt and already have $25,000 worth of stocks. It's also possible that I might manage and live in my parent's house in US and rent out a few other rooms to tenants after I graduate because my parents will be moving back to Europe and they want to rent out the house. My goal is to explode my income tied to time first, by getting advanced and charging premium fees at freelance copyrighting and then by building a sellable scalable service or package where I can divorce my income of time, then to use that money to buy income and perhaps even get into real estate down the line. Thanks MJ DeMarco for laying out the true process for becoming financially free, I've wasted thousands of dollars on stupid overpriced guru coaching/training programs where I am their business and their main goal is to suck every penny from me instead of actually helping me succeed. Ultimately I want to be worth tens of millions by the time I'm in my thirties, spend time with my family, friends, girlfriend, be healthy, and travel the world and afford a luxurious but not exorbitant lifestyle, flashy cars or gigantic mansions don't really interest me too much.

I am a freelancer too, currently, I am making 30 USD per hour and I am planning to open a small business.
Nice! That’s the way to go. What are you freelancing in? Since I’ve posted I’ve been able to get a few freelance clients for copywriting and now I’ve raised my rate from $30 to $45/hr. My goal is to consistency hit 6 figures a year freelancing at about $100/hr before I open a small business. I wanna do that so my business can be self-funded

Update: I've just secured a long term copywriting contract at $45/hr, 10-15 hours a week that will increase. A few months ago I was still brand new to copywriting and just started studying it in depth. Weird how fast results come if you just focus. A great stepping stone forward towards my end goal entrepreneurial vision

I'm also learning copywriting and SEO at an agency as an intern, I'll be freelancing after the internship soon. Where do you find clients, or do you use cold email outreach?

Love the progress you're making. Kudos to you man!

Update: My freelance copywriting income has reached $1,000 this month in cash collected so far (August), more than doubling since the month before. It has officially surpassed my foundational job best month (Doordash), which was about $600 in one month last April. Took me 5 months of executing the process day by day to get to this point. I have one long term client at $45/hr, and some smaller clients that pay me $30-$250 for projects that vary in size and time. I'm currently doing a test project for a new potential client that if successful will land me a new long term client, hopefully with a decent amount of ongoing work per month at the same $45/hr effective rate.

My goal is to achieve and surpass $2,438/month in the next few months. I will do this by taking on more long term clients while at the same time raising my rate for new clients I take on. This is the gross amount I would earn if I worked a 9-5, 40 hrs a week minimum wage job in my area. I'll consider it a great milestone once I hit and surpass that!

Update: My freelance copywriting income doubled again to over $2,000/mo. ($2,227 to be exact) in September.

Intermediary mini-goal: $2,438/mo.

Next real goal: $3,000/mo.

I achieved this largely because my main client ramped up my workload, but old clients are also reaching back out for repeat business which also contributed to the increase.

Currently onboarding a new client for their first project and if successful will contribute to more long-term work. Not as many hours of work as my main client but will likely be at a higher hourly rate.

Good job with your progress so far, as it's not easy to generate a consistent location independent income.

That said, I would recommend not focusing on "retiring early" as a condition for traveling the world. That will most likely result in you ending up traveling as an older man. I assume you're in your early 20s. So now is the best time to travel. Well, as soon as you graduate college and are no longer tied to one place.

You don't have to be "rich" to travel the world. You just need a decent and consistent location independent income. While traveling, keep your long term goals in mind and keep working on them on the road.

I’m 22 and still in college until December. I don’t earn enough yet, I’d probably need to at least 2-3x my current income first and make sure that’s consistent.

Thanks for the insight. I never thought of it that way.

Thanks for the insight. I never thought of it that way.

Update: I’ve collected $2,360 of cash in October, my best month yet. I’m getting close to my income cap for the amount of clients and work I currently have.

I took on 2 new clients at $65/hr for very short term work that began and ended in October. Today raised my rate to $80/hr and started reaching out to new potential clients at that new rate.

Up until now my priority was to raise my rate as quickly as possible. Now my priorities will shift to getting as many clients as possible at this new rate because it will allow me to achieve my longer term goal of getting close to 6-figures per year while working less hours than at a full time job.

My longer term goal now is to stack my workday full of clients that I acquire for $80/hr, where I’m working 4-5 hours a day consistently Monday-Friday.

The process of achieving this will allow me to break through 3, 4, 5, 6, 7k per month and beyond.

I still have roughly a month and a half until I graduate, so my progress to that goal will likely be slower than if I had no college classes to worry about at all.

My next short term milestone I want to achieve is still $3,000/mo.

I will keep posting updates in the months ahead.

Update: I’ve acquired my first $80/hr client a few weeks ago that needs consistent ongoing work for at least the next few months. Already earned about $1.2k with this client and plenty more to come.

November in total had a slight pullback in revenue, around $1790 for the month. Freelancing is volatile so the amount of work you do along with the amount you earn can vary.

But now I’ve expanded my client base. If both my long term clients give me substantial work this month I could easily breach $3,000 in cash collected in December. Will update again at the end of the month.

My focus is getting a 2nd client at $80/hr, and then raising my rate on my other long term client (that I currently have for $45/hr) if my workload gets too busy.

P.S. I’m graduating college and have my commencement ceremony in 10 days! No corporate job lined up. I’m excited to start scaling up my income more rapidly with no distractions after I’m done.

Hey Florian. I am actually interested in becoming a copywriter as well and use it as a bridge, until i can build a money making system that does not require my presence. I want to learn it in depth. Can you give me some pointers on how to start and where to start? I appreciate all the help! Thanks in advance!

The best thing about traveling is, that it makes you understand how boring the travel is.
Is it though? Or is it matter of perspective? ;)

@FlorianR ,
First of all congrats. You put in work, and you get results so there’s nothing to be surprised about.

If you ever feel down, come back here and read again your posts. The progress is very visible.

Can’t wait until you break 5,10k/ month !

Keep us updated .

My next immediate goal is to reach 5k/mo.

I’ll hit that consistently by raising my rate on my $45/hr client significantly and taking on a new client. That’s my plan for January 2022.

Read copywriting books for beginners such as ‘the copywriters handbook’ by Robert bly and take a highly rated beginner copywriting course on udemy. That’s how I started, it’s very cheap and effective if you’re just starting out. It’ll cost you less than $50 total.

I also recommend reading this blog for tips on how to craft a portfolio from scratch and getting your first few clients on a platform like Upwork (which is what I did): Freelance to Win

Update: I was able to raise my prices on one of my main clients. This helped me blast through my 5k/mo. goal!

I collected $6.3k this month (February). I’m finally feeling more secure because the thought of actually being able to live off freelance copywriting is starting to become a reality after almost a year of consistent work and focus.

I also took on a small new project with the biggest client I’ve ever had from a paid mastermind I joined (tens of millions in business revenue per year). If this goes well, I have a feeling my career and income with skyrocket in 2022 at a pace I’ve never seen before.

I’m now over halfway to my 10k per month goal at 23 years old. I believe I will hit it at some point in 2022, which is a part of my 1 year planacy (to hit 100k/yr with freelance copywriting at 24 years old, I made it last November).

Excited to double down and commit to the work! It’s gonna be a huge year for me, I can already feel it.

Update: reached my first 7k month! Reaching a 6-figure income writing copy is now within my grasp.

Update:

It’s been a while since I last posted and a lot has changed.

I’m officially earning a 6 figure income from writing copy part time.

In total it took me around 1.5 years to get to this point.

I even have it written down as part of my 1 year planacy that I wrote in November of 2021 and I achieved the biggest goal there.

Honestly it feels great.

I acquired 2 additional retainer clients which brings me to guaranteed 8k per month in revenue. Add my other hourly client on top of that and I’m now consistently earning over $ 8,333 per month which is a 100k/yr run rate.

My best month was 9.4K in September and I’m on track to earn over 10k per month in the next few months.

Time to update my goals!
