It's been interesting.

I changed my tack on LinkedIn a bit and am sending connection requests to people working in the real estate industry here in Ireland.

The business owners and founders of the larger companies aren't very active on LinkedIn. They might post once every few months, and mostly a comment to congratulate someone, or some observation about the way business or their industry is going.

Seems they're too busy to post daily, or do talking head videos, and whatever else the personal branding gurus say we need to do.

They don't have a goal to be thought leaders, but people follow them because of what they've already done.

Their posts aren't formatted following recommendations by the LinkedIn ghostwriter brigade.

I like their style.

Focus more on serving clients and building your business, and less on "building an audience".

Curious what you guys have observed too.

They wrote their blog (forum) for years and years before ever being on camera or doing anything in front of folks.

My current frustration with all these "personal branding" ideas is that everyone assumes you want to be a coach who coaches coaches to coach coaches.

The amount of LinkedIn folks who are telling me every day "YOU NEED TO POST ON LINKEDIN! HOW MANY LEADS ARE YOU GETTING!?" None. I don't need any.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN?! EVERYONE NEEDS LEADS, HOW DO YOU SELL YOUR COACHING?"

I don't have any coaching, really.

"BUT GARY VEE SAYS PERSONAL BRAND, BRO!"

Yes... in certain contexts he's right. In my context, that's not advice that makes any sense.

I've just steered so far away from "coaching" (says the TR guy) and getting into actual businesses that do things and sell things.

Maybe I'm just a little frustrated today but I get a lot of enjoyment out of my little Path group and then the rest of my time is dedicated to these bigger and bigger clients who I'm ACTUALLY creating strategies for that are moving the needle (aka stock price) for them.

Not sure where I'm going with this but "personal branding" I think has come and gone. We are not going to be Ryan Reynolds, Kylie Jenner, or The Rock... Tequila companies aren't banging down our doors because we posted on Instagram. Salesforce isn't hiring you because of your LinkedIn post about what a colon cleanse taught you about leadership....

I found that when I pulled the stats on facebook as to which of my content gets the most traction it was always the text heavy content without me on camera.

Now here is the interesting thing when I do go on camera while the reach and engagement is way lower.. that week I'll have people messaging me for hey can you help me with this.

So I try and blend it now more so they can get a feel of who I am even if they don't watch the whole video as people can get a feel through your body language and how you talk etc more than the written content.

But agree with everyone so much sh*t out there from coaches teaching coaches how to be coaches. You got to find similar people in the game like in here to compare notes to what really is moving the needle and your not being sold down some tripwire of missing content or activity to lead you into their course lol

The people with personal brands I'm interested in don't talk about personal brands.

For instance, the CEO of the largest estate agency in Ireland announced this week he's stepping down.
He posted about it, and linked to the Irish Times article that mentioned it too.
He rarely posts on LinkedIn, and certainly not in the "staircase format" where sentences are in ascending/descending order length.
I doubt he gives a sh*t about hooks either.
People follow him because of what he's done, not what he talks about.
His personal brand is big enough that the Irish Times wrote a piece about him stepping down as CEO.

Two lines spring to mind:

"People follow leaders, they listen to experts." (Dan Gallapoo)

A leader is in motion and others follow (think of the sheep in a field that walks to another corner ... all the other sheep follow but the leading sheep didn't tell them to - they just saw her in motion).

"Tell me what you've done and I'll tell you who you are." (Some guy who'd climbed Everest)

My best performing video on LinkedIn to date (by views and Likes, and by DMs from people thanking me for it)?

It deliberately does NOT have my face in it, doesn't have a hook, doesn't have a CTA, and it's all text.

It's dry as heck to most people, but funnily enough someone replied saying it's exactly the type of content he likes.

Look how boring this is. I can check his work history and can see he works for a reasonably sized IT services business in Egypt, and his posting history is as an employee where he reposts company page posts. It looks legit, and is the sort of conversation that could turn into me chatting with him and maybe even helping the company he works for.

What are we doing for our personal brands in 2025?

Personally, I'm going to focus on doing the work. I was always sceptical of the "build in public" movement - it's fine if you're creating a SaaS for SaaS founders, but not if you're not the same as your ICP. I prefer to "build in private" and go dark.

Still continuing on but going to get back to just being me again.

Facebook for me still shakes out connections and refferals as been doing it so long now. Linkedin will still share over there.

Show more of what I'm working on, what I'm going through, etc. As people want to work with a human but they also want to know you can do it so show a bit more.

I've got a facebook group with 372 members I own, which has a few fans and is shaking work out. Full of business owners and I will get back onto doing the friday lunch and learns. As got 2 solid leads already coming from it, one for HR business and another for a very well known franchise lawayer.

Last year i wasted too much time on testing things here and there, like Mark gotta do reels instead of videos on your facebook page, oh stories. Everyone was telling me to do video, and I mix it in but have dialled right back as find feedback comes when I right a well written post versus they can skim.

I think the best premium example of someone doing this is Alen Sultanic who has the facebook group Nothing Held Back. Never shows his face, but the only guy minus andy black who i will turn notifications on for this content

Example: “I’m Alex, and I run a company called Tech Solutions.”

Same: Connect your work to something people already understand. Use simple, relatable labels. Example: “We’re like a consultancy for tech startups,” or “I’m a life coach specializing in career transitions.” This helps people quickly categorize what you do.

Fame: Highlight what makes you credible, interesting, or unique. Example: “We’ve worked with Google and Microsoft, and I’ve been recognized as Innovator of the Year,” or “I’ve helped over 100 professionals pivot into fulfilling careers.”

Aim: Share what you’re working on right now (typically within the next 90 days). Example: “In the next three months, we’re launching a new AI-powered tool for small businesses,” or “I’m hosting workshops to help job seekers redefine their career paths.”

Game: End with your long-term vision—where you’re heading in 3 to 6 years. Example: “Our goal is to become the go-to platform for tech solutions in Europe,” or “My vision is to create a global network of professionals who love what they do.”

This framework ensures clarity and impact in any setting, whether it’s a networking event, pitch, or podcast intro.

2.
