Hi there,

I was working for SEO company before my contract was completed and I started focusing on my home-based business. There was one thing that made me not like that job and it was my output. I have noticed that I was not getting enough tasks done and I had to finish remainder when I came home. I started asking why am I not getting enough done. I worked well in the morning until afternoon where I would eat lunch and then 30 minutes later I would start feeling lack of clarity in my mind, being unable to concentrate, feeling bored as if I lost the sight of tasks I had to complete, drowsyness and in another 30 minutes I would be barely able to keep my head straight. It was very uncomfortable as I didn't want to show this to employer. It lasted for 2-3 hours until my mind recovered and I could focus on tasks again but there was 2 hours remaining until the work day was over.

The communte was 2 hours by public transportation and I would drink coffee in the morning with small sandwitch and would take some apples with me for the road. Sometimes I would snack before afternoon as I woke up very early. I noticed that snacking could slightly affect my productivity causing symptoms I described above so I suspected it was food that caused this drop in performance.

I started skipping meals when I had tasks to complete until evening and would at most make a coffee in the office trying to last until evening. This was not every day but it was working to keep backlog at a bay. I would postpone lunch break until I delivered work that my employer would sometimes need urgently. I knew that until lunch break I was at my most efficient productivity condition to do that. Sometimes I would get very hungry but keep pushing myself until it would get blurry in my eyes and I felt like fainting. I will also mention that at that time period I was obsessed about fitness and maintaining good shape.

Half year later the contract was over because I disliked the discomfort I experienced and realized that SEO for clients is different than SEO for someone who is self-employed and makes money with ads and affiliate offers etc.

Little did I know, that this problem would haunt me for next 2 years and today I still have it. I don't know if others have it as well or at least to such extent that I do but this problem seriously affects my productivity. Being a one-man show, you understand how time and available resources are important and that after you have already eliminated distractions and things that do not serve your purpose.

In last 2 years I found that there is one solution that helps me to consume as less food as I can, yet having advantage of not experiencing "side-effects" that food causes me, earning me time, focus, clarity of mind to move forward and get things done. I heard about "Bulletproof Coffee" and realized that MCT oil component helped me. Majority of time I do not eat breakfast and instead make ground coffee with MCT coconut oil which is said to circumvent digestive system that food normally goes through and get straight to liver which would soon start fieling fatty acids from oil to the brain. It helps me to suppress my appetite and I am able to function without food for next 5-6 hours. For a time being I would drink coffee again and stay until late in the evening completing all important tasks that I written in my daily goals list, sometimes completing less important tasks as a bonus. I would also do 15 minutes exercises, mostly aerobics which are known to get blood going through the body and flow oxygen to the brain and causing release of endorphins.

I am 33 by the way now and would reach weight of 145 pounds. Eventually I would start feeling stressed out, going to sleep late and my cognition is not as best as it was when I started my journey. A journey of sacrifice for a lot of set backs, problems to deal with and despite that not achieving results I wanted. I started asking if this sacrifice is worth all the problems I experience wondering if office job requiring analytical and creative thinking is not the type of job for me because my body is different.

So I am here to ask if productivity issue I mentioned earlier resonates with someone of people here. Do you have this productivity drop due to "side-effects" cause by food? Let me be clear that I eat healthy, that is no soft drinks, juices, no chocolate bars, no chips, no any bread. Even if I eat home made boiled food this productivity drop still happens. I quit eating meat because I heard it takes longer to digest. My diet is mostly dairy, vegetables and fruits in the evening with some chocolate for small snacking in order to eat less because I noticed that the issue happens almost always when I eat entire meal be it healthy or not so healthy food so reducing meal size to 3/4 and 1/2 helped to some extent.

I understand that this is not a place to ask for health advice and will not take replies as one but I will certainly appreciate your opinion. This was long post and I thank you for reading it!

Probably a food allergy. Eliminate one thing at a time until you identify it. I'd start with dairy.

Also, get checked for diabetes. What you describe could be improper blood sugar levels.

Hope that helps.

Do you have this productivity drop due to "side-effects" cause by food?

Yes, and I've had a heck of a year because of it. Except it wasn't just certain foods, it felt like it was *all* food.

Ultimately fixing it involves turning your body into an experiment and monitoring how certain foods make you feel. And get a food allergy test as well -- they aren't too expensive.

I feel like I've been on an elimination diet for 2 years. And gawd darn it, coffee was on the list to nix.

Coffee was actually my main problem. I never drank it growing up, but once I got a new job and my own apartment I started drinking it because it felt like a luxury. I loved waking up in the morning on my days off and easing into the morning with 2-3 cups of coffee. I got into the Bulletproof Coffee thing with butter, coconut oil, MCT oil, eggs, but I never felt the mental clarity and superhero powers that the guy claims he gets. I'm slightly suspicious that he's just trying to push his brand a little bit. I tried Bulletproof Coffee blended with butter, vanilla whey protein and coconut oil and thought the taste was amazing, but I never got that "rush". I tried MCT oil to see if that chemical compound was what I needed. Then I decided that because eggs need to be heated above 85 degrees to release their nutritional benefits, that I would blend them into the coffee. All great stuff. I actually started to feel worse! I would drink it and 1-2 hours later I would get super sleepy and nauseous. It wasn't good that I was working 12 hour night shifts and have my body shut down at 1am when I was working until 7am.

The problem was that I was downing about 50g of fat instantly. It was going straight through me. It was way too much for my body to process. My body was trying to shut down because it couldn't handle it.

Back in June, I went to the dentist who took my blood pressure. I happened to drink coffee that morning and my BP was around 130/88. I cut out coffee and later that month I went to get a work physical. My blood pressure was 120/78. Cutting out coffee actually made me have more energy and I felt great. I think the problem was coffee was causing my blood pressure to go up, which actually made me feel tired. I think I developed a sensitivity to caffeine. Check your blood pressure and see if that might be a problem for you too.

This was all about coffee and caffeine, but you should consider trying to get rid of the coffee. Think about foods that have a low glycemic index. Get rid of processed foods. Get rid of sulfites. I've been sticking to the Whole30 vegetarian shopping list foods and feel great. No more wild mood swings and my energy levels are consistent throughout the day.

You might need to check out the Ketogenic diet. I found out about it through Tim Ferriss. Personally I haven't started doing it, but a lot of people say it helps

Food absolutely affects your output. I workout at 11am and eat at 12pm. If I eat something clean with low glycemic carbs I usually work the rest of the afternoon with no problem. If I eat something bad (burger, fries), I'm struggling to stay awake by 2pm and because I'm my own boss :) I head home and nap from 3pm to 5pm and waste the rest of my day. I've also found that if I eat healthy, like a salad, BUT drink a Coke, I feel the same way as if I had a burger and fries.

Reducing your meals to feel better = Lack of stomach acid = a lot of allergy reaction, i know that because in hospital they gave me stomach acid blockers, awful.

you should never mix Fat with sugar, you eat sometimes a chocolate Bar, you should wait one hour(some people 2 hour) after a proper meal for in take sugar snacks, try it!

Also is caffeine linked to affecting Bloodsugar, may you start with green tee it releases slower the caffeine.

When iam eating gluten stuff and unhealthy fastfood than its like biophase described it knocks me out at 2pm and iam useless till 5-6pm :D what helped most
is no MEAT for lunch! what did you try till yet @biophase ?

Damn I didn't realize so many other people are hip to the whole 'food will help or hurt' concept. Not too long ago people would look at you like you had 3 heads if you talked about food alergies/candida overgrowth/gluten & dairy sensitivities/etc.

Food definitely effects your body in crazy ways! I know firsthand.

Last chunk of years couldn't figure out why everything hurts all the time and brain fog and low energy etc...

Last Feb I somewhat reluctantly cut out all gluten, dairy, sugar, alchohol, processed foods for 3 months - and it worked a friggin' miracle! I couldn't believe it! I didn't want to believe it because I've always loved my pizza and breakfast sandwiches and stuff.

Pains disappeared, energy increased, mood improved, skin looked better, etc.

Unfortunately i slowly went back to eating the same crap and guess what.....now I'm doing another round of healing with food as we speak because I am now convinced after healing myself and then going back to feeling 'less than optimal' that it works. Hey....we're creatures of habit right? Sometimes it takes a couple tries for things to sink in...

From here on out 85% of the time will be following what you might call 'Paleo/Primal' lifestyle and about 15% will be 'open menu'. That's literally about 55 days per year of 'open menu'. Just enough to cover b-days, holidays, anniversary, and a few others.

No more shooting myself in the foot because crap foods and sugar and coffee taste good. I just don't care anymore.

And of course shedding fat and leaning out is just about effortless when your insulin isn't spiked all day - that alone is enough of a reason to ditch the garbage, but that's a whole 'nother topic in itself...

I think having a healthy gut/intestinal tract (research it if you think I'm off my rocker...)is CRUCIAL and once that's in place it's ok to pepper in the pizza/snacks/cocktails etc occassionally.

So much this. Especially the mood part.

I've had depression for essentially my whole life, and watching what I eat helps me control that.

Pizza literally makes me depressed for days. So does beer. I'm convinced gluten is evil haha.

Ever do green smoothies? I make them at home. I just throw in anything green I can find, peas, green beans, lettuce, celery, kale, spinach, avocado, whatever. I top it off with an apple and carrots, blend it with ice...oh yeah. Feel like a million bucks after drinking that.

Haha, yeah, I had that the first couple of times. I drink it after lifting, so on an empty stomach. It helps to blend it long enough, like 5 minutes. Even if it looks blended, try blending it longer and see what happens.

The other thing to try is watering it down a bit. I will blend it to almost a watery consistency for my kids, otherwise they won't drink it because of stomach upset. (I also put vanilla protein powder in it if they will be drinking it, so it tastes better)

If you're having intestinal issues from it (constipation or the runs) it's probably from the fiber. Drink lots of water and give it time, you'll adjust. <----I had this problem at first.

Yes absolutely on the greens. Been doing different versions over past few years but usually involves spinach/kale as a base. Sometimes carbs sometimes without etc.

I hear u on the mood thing too. I can see now that sustained periods of too much crappy food and back to back days of having drinks (like xmas/new years period where me & wife going out a lot, holiday parties with friends etc) leaves me feeling a little more negative overall. It's subtle but if I'm honest with myself, yes that's what happens.

Crazy what happens when I really 'listen' to the feedback my body gives me.

In the last 6 months, doctors have figured out that the majority of my lifelong health problems are food related. Bye-bye gluten and all kinds of other stuff. But you know what? I feel like a million bucks! I wish more people would pay attention to what they eat and discover that eating only what their bodies can tolerate is an amazing thing. If you've been through food hell, and come out the other side, you know what I mean.

In the last week I've started drinking tea in the morning rather than coffee. I noticed a difference with that right away. Another thing that has enabled me to get and stay lean as well as have tons of energy is intermittent fasting. I've used it for a few years and it is extremely effective. It's tough the first few days but once you get the hang of it it is actually much easier to get work done because you done have to think about eating as much. Here's a video I came across done by a Dr. out of California if anyone is interested in learning the science behind it.

Don't eat shit like junk food or fast food.
Load upon greens and fruits. Lean meats and fish will do well.
Drink up more water...and do try to stay away from beverages like coffee, they might dehydrate instead of refreshing you.
The Fastlane is going to be a challenging avenue, so we must strengthen ourselves and boost up!

Do try to cook if you can. You needn't be Chef Ramsay to whip up a decent meal.
I can work longer with more magnitude with a balanced diet boosting me than some of my peers who eat pizzas and God knows what all day...and their work sucks.

You should also chew your food a lot more times (I aim for 100). If you jam it down while you're sitting at the computer it takes more energy for your stomach to break it down. Your stomach is like your second brain and will release cortisol if it has to work harder to break down more food. Something else to keep in mind...

Digesting food takes A LOT of energy. I feel most clear on an empty stomach and coffee in the morning. I would recommend Intermittent Fasting. Eat 1 giant meal or 3 regular meals per day and don't snack.

DEAD ON! I used to eat every 2 hours 8-9 times daily when I was lifting like I was going to become the next Arnold. I was ALWAYS tired and lethargic, yet so concerned about losing any precise muscle mass I refused to change because all the "bro-science" and body building magazines tell you such.

I eventually ready about skipping not just breakfast but eating only 1 meal each day (for myself 2 hours before bedtime) and no snacks. I was ready to lose a bunch of muscle mass but the trade off was in hopes of having enough energy to get me through the day at work.

I never lost ANY MUSCLE, I take caffeine upon waking then 4 hours later which on an empty stomach hits you HARD suppressing your appetite while keeping your energy levels going... I also cut out carbs which is what directly causes your blood sugar levels to spike then crash, the first 2 weeks on a no/low carb diet are HELL but once you get past that... It's crazy the more energy I have ALL DAY along with debunking the myth that muscles need protein ever 2-3 hours or you'll enter a catabolic state....

Absolutely. Save carbs for night time, they'll knock you right out! If you want to eat in the morning, have proteins/fats like eggs, cheese, steak and they will keep you satiated for a while unlike carbs.

Yeah people grossly overstate how quickly your body will turn to eating muscle and organ tissue. It's not that fast.

In fact, when you fast for about 5 days your HGH levels actually skyrocket and it can become easier to build muscle tissue.

HGH level's "skyrocketing" I don't believe.... They may slightly temporarily increase but no more than the rise in testosterone levels and HGH levels slightly increase through heavy compound exercises mainly squats along with deadlifts...

Which not to hi-jack the thread... but this is closely related to diet. Some will think it's "taboo" or for "meatheads" but even if you do not lift weights, has anyone had their test levels checked OR is anyone here on a HRT/TRT replacement therapy program?

Testosterone levels drop something like 2% every 5 years after 25-30 I forgot the exact number PLUS many men have low test levels genetically... Not as a "bodybuilding" supplement but OVERALL MENTALLY/PHYSICALLY test levels play a huge role in things many people do not consider... Lack of energy, mood, depression, sleep, etc.

300% spike in HGH levels after 5-days. I don't know your definitions, but 300% definitely qualifies as skyrocketing to me, lol.
