Hey,

in my opinion, I have a weak work ethic. Since I am working alone all the time, and since I don’t know anybody who is self-employed, I can’t talk to anyone about this problem.

Let me just explain my situation a bit.

Around seven years ago I lost all my friends. I felt that I needed a goal so I decided to become a millionaire. Besides that, I absolutely hated my job.

My boss was a good friend of the family but he kind of exploited me which brought me to the conclusion that it was best to not work for other people anymore.

I started a blog and wanted to make money with affiliate marketing. So I worked at my 9 to 5 job and after that, I worked on the blog.

I was so sure that I would make it and that I could escape my 9 to 5 within six months if I would just work hard enough. So I did. On Fridays, I came home from my 9 to 5 and worked until 1 pm without even noticing that I was working and learning the whole day.

Things didn’t go as planned and that kind of slowed my willingness to work. It took me 5 years to be able to quit my job.

During those 5 years, I only worked a few hours per day on my blog. Sometimes I would even take breaks for several months. After those breaks, I felt terrible and couldn’t understand why I did that. Then I worked a bit more. Then I fell off the wagon again. This happened over and over.

It felt like I was working in sprints.

Still, I made it and now I make more than twice what I made at my 9 to 5.

Since 2020, I am trying to hit 10K per month but I just can’t do it and I feel that my work ethic is the problem. I am not taking huge breaks anymore but I still work only a few hours per day.
I work around 2 to 4 hours 7 days a week. I noticed that if I take breaks on the weekend, it’s too hard for me to get into working again, so I just don’t take breaks.

I want to work more but I feel like I have no energy and oftentimes there is something in me that tells me that I am too tired, that I don’t want to concentrate anymore, that I am not able to work for another hour because it is too much.

And that is not just because I am not motivated, even if I am motivated, I still don’t work longer than that.

I have a picture of my ideal self inside my head but I don’t make it happen and that is killing me and draining my energy even more. I know that, but I still don’t push through.

I am just wondering if other people are feeling the same? Sometimes I am just wondering if I am just stupid, lazy, or genetically not made for this since I am feeling so weak.

Another thing that might be interesting to know about me is that my father told me my whole life that I was lazy, had no ambition, was weak, etc.

To this day, I always think about that and every day I am wondering if he is right. With my behavior, I am kind of agreeing with what he said and still says about me.

Just so you know, he said that about me because I never joined a sports team, and didn’t really have good grades in school.

My grades were okay, but I just winged it and could have been way better.

It seems that I am always at my best when I am suffering and scared as hell. For example, I never really studied, but when I was close to failing, I got scared and stressed (because my father would have killed me) so I just made sure that I knew a few things so that I could barely pass my exams.

School was boring and doing it like that always worked for me.

What are your thoughts on that? Do you guys feel the same?

Regards,

Venkman

P.S.

-I lift weights almost every day just to stay healthy. 5 sets of one compound movement a day.
-I ride a stationary bycicle for around 5-6 km per day.
-I try to eat healthy, I only drink water, no coffee, but I still eat a bit too much sugar per day for my liking.
-I already saw a therapist because of the things above and I was able to confront my father about those things. It didn't help with my work ethic.

It doesn't sound like you have work ethic issues, working 9-5 and then 2-4h already puts you way above most people. I think you're just hitting your capacity in terms of the output that you can produce. Have you thought of outsourcing work related to your affiliate blog? What is the blog's current monthly revenue? Although you're putting 2-4h day, you're doing that for quite some time and you should be getting some return.

I am not consider myself as a successful person or anything. But I think that I might be in your situation so I can share with you my little thought related to your problem.

First, it is very hard to always stay motivated. You just can not always find yourself exciting all the time. There is one thing you can, have a big goal and device it to smaller goals and milestones. Try to follow the schedule to reach those small goals daily. If you felt burn-out, start adjust it little by little. In case you don’t surround by good people. Writing a small reflection in the end of your work day.

The meaning behind is you will able to observe your progress daily and adjust when thing don’t work out. Because when we don’t measure thing, we can’t know whether we are improve or not. Result is the best motivational material that I have found I’m the past years.

Last, always sticking to your head that you are driving in the fast lane to escape mediocrity. It is going fast and you will be tired. That is fine, take a break and make small adjustments everyday. Hope it might help.

Thank you for your reply!

Well, that is true, I was able to work 10 to 14 hours, sometimes even longer plus weekends. However, now, even though I have so much time, it is so hard for me to do.

Hm, does that mean that you think that output and hours worked is not really the same? That some people just work harder in 4 hours than other in 8 and that this could be more exhausting?

Oh, I am outsourcing all the writing now. I made sure that even if I don't work a lot, the blogs are still growing.

I hit around $9k (per month) in November 2021 but then my blogs got hit by a Google algorithm update.

It's so frustrating because that always happens when things are going well. It is part of the game but it is incredibly demotivating.

I think a schedule makes sense but when I start to feel exhausted, I abandon my schedule/ routine and then I get really frustrated because I just can't understand why I am behaving this way.

I also wrote in my journal for a while but I kind of feel that such things are nonsense. Why writing a journal when you can do the real work instead?

Measuring on the other hand absolutely makes sense. Right now, I measure how many hours I work per day, and how many articles I have published.

True, results are a huge motivation. The thing that frustrated me right now is that I am putting all the money into my blogs but I see no results because of those algorithm updates.

I don't want to sound like a cry baby but it might be one of the reasons for my behavior sometimes. Sometimes I just wonder if what I am doing makes sense and then I feel a bit paralyzed.

Thankyou, this was helpful. I never even thought of my working time as (school work + indipendent work) and you showed me that new perspective.

Sounds to me like a purpose problem.

Why are you doing what you're doing? Is the only gratification that you get the $ count in your pocket?

What pain does your content solve? Aren't you satisfied with doing your best to satisfy that pain? Algorithm changes are outside of your control, so all you can do is adapt and deal with it. Focus on the one thing that pushes you forward.

I felt that I needed a goal so I decided to become a millionaire.

Is this what drives you?

Why do you wake up in the morning?

You don't need motivation. You need a clear purpose.

This post re-emerged recently. And the topic has been circulating a bit here in these past few days. I think it's quite relevant:

Your current behaviors are just fine in my opinion because I'm the same and I'm doing just fine.

I dropped out of school and got terrible grades.

I've always been kinda lazy. I get highly motivated for a little bit then lose momentum. Happens all the time.

That won't stop you from being successful, unless you are doing something that requires consistent daily work like maintaining a blog.

My business requires daily consistent work, I have 4 employees to handle that. I know myself. I'm wildly inconsistent. I couldn't get addicted to crack, I'd just forget to take it for a week. I need to have consistent people around me to do the boring work.

You think you've got a bad work style for business, you actually have an ideal business work style. Working on a business requires genius decisions, not daily grinding away. You have employees do the mindless consistent work while you have ideas, try new things, look for different angles, and do things in bursts.

I think a blog is a bad idea for you. You should have a blog if you have an overflowing amount of things to say and it's IMPOSSIBLE to NOT WRITE. There should be zero motivation needed for a writer. I'm on here writing away because I have to. I tell myself to spend less time on this forum writing answers. I start businesses because I have to. I am compelled to do so. But you couldn't pay me enough to be motivated to do homework or busy-work. Very rarely do I fight my nature at all.

F*ck listening to a therapist or your dad. Have they accomplished what you want to accomplish? No? Then forget it. I love my dad, but I don't listen to a damn thing he says when it comes to work, business, etc. He's not like me. I'm not like him. I remember he called me delusional a couple years ago and now he's still working 60 hour weeks at 50 and I'm basically retired making twice what he makes at 25. You gotta just shut people out mentally and follow your gut.

Maintain a high level of energy and confidence and do not fight your nature. Listen to it and use it as a strength.

“You can’t break tackles at marathon pace.” (Blaise Brosnan)

I immerse myself and “sprint”. Then take a break. Don’t ask me to be consistent or go for a 10km jog - it bores the heck out of me. We’re not all wired the same. Lean into how you’re wired.

Also, as others have mentioned, maybe your goal/purpose isn’t strong enough?

That's interesting because the last couple of days I thought about focusing on making my websites the best they can be instead of focusing on traffic and revenue.

So far, the only thing I focused on was how much money I could get without really trading my time for it. How much money can I make on autopilot with those websites?

However, I am not really sure if changing my mindset would help me to change my behavior. Still, there is one website that I just started that really excites me, and making that website as big as possible would be awesome.

That website is showing very little signs of organic traffic so far though and then I start asking myself again "Is it even worth it to pump money into this project?".

But I agree with you, I have a purpose problem.

It's funny to read that because I expected to get slammed for being lazy and that I would read that "not everybody has what it takes".

Reading that my behavior is absolutely okay and that other successful people are the same is almost unbelievable to me.

And yes, it sounds like we are very similar. I also could not get addicted to anything. I don't know why but it just doesn't happen to me. Things get boring and I forget about them and that's it.

Absolutely, if I hadn't outsourced my writing, I would not make as much money as I make now since I am not consistent enough for blogging.

What kind of business would you recommend for a guy like me?

I agree with you, it might be better not to fight my nature and not to listen to my father. However, since I never really talked to anybody about this I always felt like improving my work ethic is the one thing that is keeping me from being as successful as I want to be and that he was right about me being just lazy and having zero ambitions.

That's like asking what kind of hobby would you recommend for someone with a green shirt.

Kinda hard to answer that question. Doing so would be an oversimplification and wouldn't increase your odds of success.

You can succeed in many different industries. It's not about you, it's about delivering value to the customer. You can do that while having sporadic productivity levels.

No, your work ethic is likely not the reason for your lack of success.

Which should be more alarming than if it was...

Agree and relate on all counts. I tried to be like one of my super organized and consistently productive friends for a while which only made me miserable. After I embraced my nature and focused on my strengths, things started happening and I surpassed everyone in my social circle - friends, family, relatives, etc.

@Dr. Venkman It sounds like you've set some arbitrary goals because of peer pressure or something. Would your life really change if you jump from 5-6k per month to 10k? If money is the only thing moving you forward, why stop at just 10k?

Ha, true. To be honest, I thought about this after I failed again hitting the 10K last year. "What if it's not my work ethic? What if I am just not good enough?"

And now when I think about it, in the beginning, my websites made most money through affiliate marketing. Then I discovered ads and tripled my income with them but affiliate marketing was still a big part of my income.

A while ago, Amazon slashed their affiliate commission rates and that meant 67% less affiliate commissions for me.

I have 200.000 visitors each and every month and I only make around $500 from them with affiliate marketing, which is ridiculously low when I think about it.

So yeah, even if it would have been my work ethic, I also have other problems.

Thanks for that thought-provoking impulse!

Thank you so much for your response.

Good to read about another person that can relate. So what did you do after you figured out that you are wired differently? What exactly did you do when you say you embraced your nature and focused on your strength?

It sounds stupid and corny but it was not out of peer pressure or something like that.
It was just a thought that came to my mind and I immediately knew that this was and is something I have to do. I didn't even think it was possible before that because I was raised by people who told me "you can't become rich, rich people just have rich parents".

I was always interested in making and having money even as a young child so it didn't really come out of the blue.

Making 10K a month would not transform my life, that's for sure. I would invest most of it into my sites anyway.

For now, my goal is to make 30K - 50K a month with my websites. So focusing on the 10K is stupid, that's correct but it was a milestone.

However, maybe I should just focus more on 50K instead of 10K.

Imagine if you had 200k visitors per month to a website that sold YOUR products...

Maybe you should get in touch with your million visitors the past year and ask them what they struggle with so you can better serve their needs.

As @Speed112 just said - 100% make your own product.

This is a lot of traffic, with a good offer you could be making excellent money right away.

Can you create something these people want?

(Or at the least go directly to an affiliate that will give a great percentage, not send them to Amazon etc)

Just for clarification, I don't have 200K visitors per month to one site. It is spread on four sites. Still, it would bring in some decent money if I could find the right pain point.

Also, my websites target the US audience. I don't live in the US so producing and selling physical products might be harder.

Actually, I already tried that with digital products (ebooks) and it went horrible. I am in contact with a person who is kind of an expert in this field (his company now makes over 2 million a month) and even he told me that he has never seen a product launch, etc., perform so poorly.

One of the reasons for that is definitely because I could have done a better job of promoting the product. However, at that time I felt it wasn't really worth it to continue to invest my time and money into selling my own digital products.

So I went back to getting more traffic for more ad revenue.

Maybe I should rethink that.

Honestly, I am not sure if I could create a product (digital) that people would buy.

However, I am 100% sure that I could promote products that would bring in some good money - at least on two sites.

So maybe I should focus more on that instead of getting more traffic, which is what I am doing right now.

You could create your own branded version of the products that perform the best on your existing websites. Sell through Amazon FBA, and instead of getting pennies on the dollar you get 50%+ of the revenue, maybe 10-20% profit margins. It's extra work, sure, but you can scale up while you figure things out, build your own brand, and then you already have the infrastructure to sell direct to consumer. Or you can dropship the same products Amazon is selling at a discount for those who don't want instant shipping.

If you're going the affiliate route, look on Clickbank for products that fit your niche. You can get even 100% commissions on the front-end. Amazon's program is literally peanuts.

You could create your own branded version of the products that perform the best on your existing websites. Sell through Amazon FBA, and instead of getting pennies on the dollar you get 50%+ of the revenue, maybe 10-20% profit margins. Thank you so much for your tips here.

I will definitely look into Amazon FBA. Of course, I have heard about it but I didn't really care because I thought that wouldn't fit.

That is correct, Amazon is peanuts now. I was at a 8% commission rate, which is already quite low but now I only get 2%.

I will also have a look at Clickbank etc.

I already made a small list of products that I could promote right away for one of my sites. Fortunately, with so much traffic, testing is easy and quick.
