Today, I truly underestimated how f*cked up college kids in business school are.
...
I realised that:

-most business school students had NO business starting a business, if they never did their research

Congrats, today you learned that most b school students aren't there to learn to start their own business - they're there to learn how to work IN a business.

They want that sweet, sweet corporate "security". A "good" job, a "good" salary, a pat on the head from parents & peers. Even plenty that say they want to start their own business - watch their actions come graduation.

Just like you wouldn't be surprised if a chemistry student wanted to work in a lab, or an architecture student wanted to work in a firm of architects. Sure, some will want to start their own lab or firm, but most won't.




Now, priorities are important, knowing when to pull back is important, but I want to present one alternative view point for your consideration - I'm not saying it's necessarily right for you right now. Right, enough caveating :rofl:

TLDR: Just F*ck group assignments and ignorant, ‘I’ll do the bare minimum’ business school kids who have poor time management skills and poor initiative to research (despite X hours of Business Analytics unit time)

You're - quite rightly - hating on "bare minimum" students who drag you down.

Maybe it might make things worse, but in my last few semesters,over-delivering on my college work doesn’t even earn me extra money or a client testimonial.

You're frustrated because your efforts to go above & beyond don't seem to be reaping you any rewards, not money or testimonials of course, but I'm guessing from your actual "clients" in this situation - your professors are probably not giving you extra credit or a higher grade, or even just verbally acknowledging "I see you there, doing better work than everyone, keep going."

Your response to this is:

I’m not going to take over as group leader...I’ll let the current one continue as long the others don’t complain. I’ll just suggest ideas off and on, but I’ll just fill in whatever I’m asked to do.

I get your frustration, but there's a danger of you doing precisely what you despise.

Consider - there's a more important audience than your college professors, or student peers, or anyone else at the b school - YOU.

You are witness to all your actions & this affects your self-esteem, your mindset, your self-belief. You are constantly reinforcing or altering your identity with everything that you do.

Don't do something you hate.

In fact, I just looked that bit up, & the whole quote deserves a repeat here I think.

Get used to being the best. Get used to being a leader. Get used to people riding your coattails and just scraping by because that's what most people do, and the more you do the opposite, the more doors open for you whether it's school, business or some other part of life.

Even if your professors don't notice or care, you'll notice, you'll care, & at some point someone else in the world will notice & care what you're doing, but this time they may be a client or an investor with a fat cheque, & they'll be watching you execute seemingly effortlessly, because by this time, your excellence will be a habit.


Believe me, I'm writing this post trying to reorient my own trajectory here as much as I'm trying to make the same suggestion to you.



-Group assignments DO NOT simulate the workplace, no matter how much the profs tell you they do.

I can’t fire, negotiate, filter as fast and furious as I do with freelancing.

This is one reason why I don’t want to enter the workforce and get a job. I don’t want to work with idiots like them.

All the more reason to freelance or do my own business or catch my own meat.

Amen brother.

But the scary thing is sometimes group assigned DO simulate the workplace in the sense that you have to work with people you do not pick - if you're not freelance, or the boss.

You know what you have to do.


One final thing:

If this is what I can expect from my current generation of business school students, I can’t blame employers for treating interns like cheap-chess pieces.

This reminds me of when I was doing some freelance work for a day at the headquarters of a huge multi-national company you would have heard of. The kind of place where you assume everyone has at least a "good" job & a "good" wage. It was a nice day so the canteen had decided to put on a barbecue outside - you just had to pay inside, get a little voucher, then you could hand it over to the barbecue team outside. They'd clearly printed a bunch of these simple vouchers to a standard page & chopped them up. No problem, it served a purpose. When I turned them over however, I noticed something - they'd stamped the back. I was immediately transported back to university where this is the kind of thing they'd do to stop cheap-a$$ student thinking they're funny & clever by photocopying the voucher to scam some free food. I felt so infantilised. Did they really have to do this? Here?! We're talking <$7. I was suddenly very aware of how much the giant office building felt like a campus, & how very, very glad I was that I'd moved on in life, & not just swapped one paternal institution for another.


@ZF Lee - how long to you have left till you graduate?

If you want some real fun look up malinvestment and the likelihood of a boom and bust business cycle without government creating bubbles.

Switching from politics / economic theory to biology, The Hour Between Dog and Wolf discusses the role of the role of hormones in the boom and bust cycles on Wall Street. One of the themes was that as you are making tens of millions of dollars your testosterone spikes, which leads to you taking greater risks and making even more money or losing everything that you ever made. It was an easy read and quite enjoyable. Plus they even mentioned the panic / excitement that occurred when there was news that the Fed might raise interest rates.

Agreed.

But like I said, the more I spend on these lower-reward assignments, the less time and energy I have for the other projects.

Yet, work is work.

There's many ways to be 'best' I can do here...for example over-delivering on my portion of work, maybe giving some helpful tips to the other members, and even arranging consultation meetings with the prof (even though my team won't).

I've did these things in my last semester, for a data mining group assignment that had similar symptoms (I think I talked about them in my progress thread). They probably saved my grade (and team) from extinction.

What I meant by 'just doing whatever I'm asked to' is not that I'll follow their footsteps.
I'll do my best to stand out...

...But I also have boundaries...a group assignment that ends up with you taking over 99.9% of the work, one way or another, isn't a group assignment at all. I'll need to ensure the team members understand that, and buckle up to give some substance to their own work.

Another way to be 'best' would be to take over as group leader, instead of letting my current one run on.

I've tried taking over group leadership before, in my first year, for a management unit.
Polishing up great slides, turning my team mater's crappy work into gold. 99.5% work.
While results were spectacular, in truth, I ended up working less on my Fastlane projects, especially starting out on freelancing at that time. And slept pretty bad, and my mental fogged up lots.

A pyrrhic victory, to be exact.

Maybe I still have to work on making high-performance a habit, but there's probably a time when I'd have to start choosing which stuff to work more on, and which to work less on.

It'll be easier and more sensible to support my current group leader with a few extras here and there- but of course, I don't consider that 'going all out' as it has its limits.


@ZF Lee - how long to you have left till you graduate?
This is my final semester. So we'll finish up end of this year.

Thought I'd create a random thoughts and chit-chat thread for anyone who'd like to post something, but it doesn't need it's own thread.

For example, I just learned today that an idea I had years ago for an airport valet service is now reality. Not only is it reality, but it is growing and grabbing funding.

The service is EXACTLY as I envisioned it would be.

OAK and LAX Long-Term Airport Parking : Never Park Again

Darn it!

The old, "Damn, I had that idea!!" strikes again!

That said, I might invest as they are taking accredited investor money.

If I only had a nickel for every great idea I didn't pursue and someone else made happen I'd be giving Jeff Bezos a run for his money.

My rant: I used to like working from home when things were normal (yes, back then) because I could go out for a walk, get coffee, or just roam about aimlessly for a while. Things are much better now than they were last month, but I've not been sleeping well at all these days. So most of my free time during work hours is spent trying to catch a few minutes of zzzz time, but to no avail. I want to yell at all those who're getting a good 8 hrs of sleep nightly!

Personally, I think it’s all a load of bull. I’d rather take on a street smart, computer literate, and hard worker off the street than someone who’s studied all that stuff.

Academia is a closed circle and it really only loves to cite those who are in academia. It’s like a bunch of guys standing in a circle all pointing to the guy on their right side. Although MJ’s ideas are fit to be taught in an academic textbook it probably won’t because he’s not an academic.

Yeah a lot of those academic ideas are really created within a professional management position(a job) context. MBA classes are full of ideas like this. It’s not that they’re wrong it’s just that there’s more than one way to represent something and more than one way to get from point A to point B. Most people won’t start at a six figure management position out of college but they teach you stuff like you are.

But one of the things you will learn is that to really be successful your gonna have to dump everything you’ve learned and start from scratch. Asking yourself questions like “alright how does this really work”?

But yeah I’ve been through academia before and the shit they teach is very abstract and disconnected from what really happens in reality. It’s almost schizophrenic. They really only want two things: a monopoly on knowledge and more money flowing through their system. After graduating not once was I ever asked how my knowledge or learning benefited me or if there was something to be improved. Nothing. Because it doesn’t matter they got my money and their schizophrenic knowledge doesn’t care if it works or not it just sounds “good”.

Although I must confess I do buy academic books and journals for topics and subjects that have been rarely talked about in the mainstream and for which there is no 240 page 19.95 book on Amazon.

and give money in person. (not to mention environment costs).

As a matter of fact you could ship it to anyone within 1213.6 miles range (4.1m/kWh source).
And if you wouldn't have to go back you could have range of 2427 miles.
That's almost as wide as USA is.

So the suggestion to Johnny and Gravy is to build app, that is aimed at such business owner: like exterior house cleaning.
You guys have experience in your own fields.

Idea came after reading about app made purely for maids business owners. Its making $60k monthly revenue.

That would be it.

I hope this thread is an OK place for this - didn't seem worthy of a new thread.
When considering app development, especially for iOS, is it critical that you own a Mac?

I'm thinking of purchasing a Macbook Pro. I actually already hired someone months back to develop my app, but it's been sitting in a folder because I don't have a Mac, Swift, XCode or whatever Apple users use for development in 2020 (haven't used a Mac since 2010).

Any other ways to test it out and get it going?

As more info came out, turns out we really escaped a bad situation. Didn't know it at the time, but we got caught in the middle of some bad probabilities.

This guy was randomly shooting at trailers, then barricaded himself in the trailer. When he wouldn't come out, the police blew out his back window to get a sniper on him. When they saw him reload to start again, they took him out. Glad that there was help when it was needed. I know police get a bad rap in this country (as some events clearly have warranted the negative attention) but overall we are thankful they weren't "defunded" here. As with many things in life, the radical 5% (Bad apples) ruin it for the 95% who just want to do their jobs, live peacefully, etc.

Yes you need a Mac. To develop an iOS or macOS app, you need to use Xcode and have access to its SDK. Xcode is only available with Macs.

I’ve read about people making a Hackintosh, which is where you run a bootlegged version of macOS on a virtual machine, but this works very poorly and honestly isn’t even worth trying.
