Open question: How can or do you personally gather accurate information on the poison M&Ms in your business?

Surely if you just listen to the loudest potential "eaters" there can be a skew to the information you collect. For instance the typos on MJ's website most likely didn't represent the vast majority of the "why" behind non-purchasers of his book at that time I'd guess. But it was a known poison M&M in the bowl brought to his attention.

Obviously this would be dependent on industry but figured it could help kick start the conversation.

I discussed with my colleague today how a negative thing can really outweigh all the other positive things from a psychological perspective, and she mentioned how crazy it is. It's really in our DNA, and the survival mindset means that we look for negatives even though there are a lot of positives around us. So yeah, reading one highly negative review can really turn anyone off from buying from a business, and I wonder how businesses handle these as they really affect things a lot – is there even a way for them to deal with these Google reviews if such a thing happens?

So, I think someone asked already, but how would you go asking for input from users? In my case I am thinking of some kind of poll/multi-page questionnaire involving users. Something like "what did you like about our site? What did you not like? Do you find it easy to use? Did you have difficulties in finding what you were looking for? Does it display well on mobile?" I have some other questions in mind but that is just as an example off the top of my head. Maybe find a way to get their email with the questionnaire and sweeten the deal with a discount voucher for the address and the time spent filling it out.

Being an OCD writer and former proofreader, misspellings and typos are rarely a problem with content I produce personally. I consider it sloppy / lazy work. Plus there's absolutely NO EXCUSE for it, with spellcheck built into every single software I use. PLUS a lot of the content I generate now is created with the help of AI - you can simply ask ChatGPT or whatever to spellcheck its own work.

A poison M&M for me is use of wrong possessives. It is is abbreviated as "it's", but possessive version is "Its". And random including of apostrophe s where it's simply a plural version of the pronoun. That's where spellcheck doesn't always help, since both versions of the word are correctly spelled, but used incorrectly.

I used to use Grammarly religiously, but stopped using it. Just know that it is a great tool if you actually use it.

Also, as a graphic designer, I'm bothered by bad design, both ugly layout and impractical design. I've used some software that looks like it was developed in Windows 98 and simply canceled my subscription because I couldn't stand to use it. The UX is just as important (or maybe MORE important than) as functionality.

I know everyone says "Perfect is the enemy of good" but these things are a turn-off for me, so I try to ensure I don't violate these precious grammar and spelling rules.
