First - I just quit my job. Here's the link to the thread on this forum, where I shared about that journey. (I have created a new user account, for I want to begin with a new username)
Yes, for me quitting the job did not happen instantly.

But anyway, the focus of this thread is to document my entrepreneurial journey.

I also consider it as a way to be accountable.

The Core Idea: Use Amazon Kindle Publishing to establish myself as an Author.

I already published a book a couple years ago. So I am not totally new to the game.

Financial goal: Get to 10,000 USD in royalty income by November, 2020. A year from now!

Why this is important to me

While, being financially free, is the obvious goal, it isn't the ultimate.

I not only want to enjoy financial freedom, but I also want to make a difference in the world.

To exist in this world, for the sake of existing, is not my thing.

I want to contribute in a meaningful way.

And after going over several business ideas, being an Author of Non-fiction books is the only thing I end up circling back to.

But that is not all. I am also, inspired by MTF's journey documented on this forum. Here's the link It is open only to those with an INSIDERS subscription.

I took several nuggets of wisdom from there, and perhaps without MTF's publishing success, I would have not been as confident to take this step.

I also decided to document this journey in the regular forum, with a vision that, whether I succeed or fail, there will be documentation for others to draw some nuggets from.

What Challenges I Am Facing Now:

Budgeting -
Earlier, I had a fixed income coming in each month from my job. Now I have to live off savings.

So I need to plan this well. There are some unavoidable expenses to operate this business.

Organising - When you're doing a job, you have to be available during the work hours, no matter what.

I am working on that, to discipline myself.

Health - I need to ensure, I stay healthy and at the right weight.

Family - I am all set to work 24/7 -- not literally of course. But I will need to ensure, I spend adequate time with the family, else they will end up feeling ignored. And success doesn't mean anything if you're not spending quality time with your loved ones.

How Often Will I Update this Thread

Mostly every day. At least, that is what I intend to do.

The Most Important Thing:

I am not a fan of being a crazy hustler. I am not doing this to prove anything to anyone.

I am doing this simply because it is a basic requirement of life -- to live well!

Else, what am I doing here?

So that's it for now!

I will keep you posted.

Cheers!

Execution Update Day 1

The focus at the start of the day was the following:

-identify an autoresponder service provider
-configure to mailing list, so I can start capturing reader emails

While, doing this should not have been a big deal, I was more cautious keeping GDPR and future business prospects in mind.

I ended up reading a lot about GDPR and it cost me a few hours, before I could come to terms with it.

I toiled with the idea of using some cheap options, even considered getting one of the deals live on AppSumo, that would give me a lifetime subscription for one small fee. Which would be great for an autoresponder service.

But on doing further research, I found that, the service wasn't upto the mark. Especially, from a GDPR perspective, so I dropped the idea.

I finally zeroed in on ConvertKit, and I am loving it.

Lesson I learned here was: Almost all the time, you get what you pay for.

Another one is: It is essential to build a business on a solid foundation.

Considering that an email list will be vital to my success as an Author, it was a no brainer for me to choose an email service provider who has a great reputation.

Sure, it's going to cost me money, but I will mark that as an investment that will pay for itself in the long run.

By the end of the day, I was still not completely setup with the system, but I am satisfied with the days work.

I will tackle the rest of the challenges tomorrow.

Cheers!

Execution Update Day 2

At the top of my list today was to get the Optin page working.

There were some glitches, so it took a while to fix that.

But I am glad that it is finally done.

Since I am starting out again as a self-published author, I decided to enroll my book in KDP select, and set up the promo for 3 days.

This is a small step to acquire readers.

I used KDP ROI to notify various book websites about the free promo, and hopefully that will make some difference. Let's see.

Overall, it was a slow day. I would have preferred to get more done.

I also got my author website installed. Will be tweaking that as well.

On another note, I am researching topics for my next book, I will need to figure out an effective launch plan.

Last time I published the book, it could not gain much traction as I struggled to get reviews.

In fact, one of the biggest challenges I have is to find a way to get reviews before I launch a book.

I have a couple of training programs that show how to do it, but the process has been quite slow there.

How to get reviews early for my book will be on my task list. One of the best ways I know of is to contact reviewers of other similar books, I don't know if that still works.

On another note, it has been 7 days now, since I last went to work.

I have worked for close to two decades, and it was shift work.

While I am working a lot harder now, than at my work. I still feel great.

In fact, work, doesn't seem like work at all.

Mindset challenges:

I have an occasional dip, where I start feeling insecure about the future. Whether I will be able to make it.

I even look at job portals to see if I can grab a part-time job.

But soon I remember, I took the decision of quitting my well settled job because I know that is not the right vehicle to where I wish to be.

So I drop all the ideas of even getting a part time job.

I want to put all my energy in self-publishing, and don't want to be distracted by the promise of fixed income. I am training myself to unlearn instant gratification. And move towards delayed gratification.

Meditation has been quite helpful, and helps me remain detached to the drama as it unfolds.

Until tomorrow.

Cheers!

I'm looking forward to seeing your progress @aum.

I think it's good you focus on building an email list right from the beginning. A loyal audience is one of the most important assets that authors have these days.

Execution Update Day 3

Today was interesting.

I started working on the author website, and found myself going over an SEO course to start things on the right note.

Before I decided to go the Author route, I tinkered around with the idea of doing Rank and Rent websites etc.

As I went through the course, it talked about the value of SILO structure.

That got me wondering, how am I going to position myself as an author.

What is the USP or core subject that I will be talking about.

I know that I will be writing non-fiction books.

The one I wrote last was in the self-help niche.

But, I don't want to simply position myself as someone providing personal development tips etc.

Which lead me to a book, and the rest of my day, was invested in reading it.

If you care to know, the name of the book is Solved: The Mystery of Life -- by Vernon Howard. Around 400 page book, done reading 100.

I feel this is going to be an important step, in helping me identify my core values, and decide how I want to show up in the world.

So all in the all, most of the day went in introspection.

Nothing productive apart from that.

Challenges I faced today:

The moment I sat at my desk to work, I started feeling drowsy.

As if I had not slept last night. Inspite of getting good eight hours rest.

Not sure why that was the case. But did some Yoga, and that helped feel more active.

All in the all, it was another, slower day.

Anyway, catch up tomorrow.

Cheers!

Be careful on reaching out for reviews. Amazon is famous for discounting whole slews of reviews. I'd focus on producing lots of quality work and within each work build links to sign up for email lists and request reviews.

Thank you. Have made a note of the same. I was never in favor of using shady tactics to get reviews. Cheers!

Here is a suggestion to get early reviews:

Grow an email list that you will launch on. Promote the book to this email list and then follow up with them for the reviews.

Having these people be YOUR followers and not just amazon buyers ups your odds of getting a review like crazy.

I don't know how well it would work, but an example of a lead magnet to grow your list would be something like an excerpt from your book - for free.

Run ads to people who follow authors within your genre/angle.

Execution Update Day 4:

After a couple of days slowdown, I thought today I would make progress.

But nah, today was one of those days that you don't want in your life.

The whole day gone by as some personal issue showed up -- no execution today. Nada, nothing.

Inspite of no work done, I am exhausted.

Anyway, looking forward to a more productive day tomorrow.

Execution Update Day 5:

Today I was able to have a more productive day.

Figured the angle, the positioning I'd like to take as an author.

Spent a few hours, researching on a book topic.

I am quite close to zeroing in on one, may be tomorrow, I should have it figured out, and will be able to start preparing an outline.

I have not written a book for over a couple of years now.

So my aim is to get to Writing ASAP.

The last book I wrote was with a goal of getting published. So ended up with a very generic topic, that perhaps did not connect to a specific audience.

This time I am trying to ensure I maintain a fine balance between affinity towards the niche, plus a need in the market for it.

My marketing budget won't be much, so I have to rely more on the market to pick up the title based on interest.

Challenges I faced today:

It was more of things coming in within family.

It's as if life knows you ought to be challenged, so it throws more your way, or something like that.

Anyway, these things are expected on this journey.

That's it for today.

Cheers!

Execution Update Day 6

Huh! What execution? Nothing.

Health issues in family, so all time was spent there.

And now I am tired.

This is not helping.

I can't be working one day, and taking an off for two days.

The solution to this is to be awake at an hour when there is least chance of distraction.

I think 5 am should be a good time.

I haven't been up that early since ages, but now comes the challenge.

Will keep ya posted.

Cheers!

P.S. I write these not so productive posts, not to waste your time, but just so that I don't hide anything, not even days when I didn't/could not show up. Nothing to feel ashamed here, this is a new life, will take a while to get it organized.

P.P.S. I was even tempted to apply for a nice looking profile, at a company with great work culture, that too remote work, but then, I thought about their founders, and dropped the whole idea.

Execution Update Day 7:

One of the best days so far.

Waking up early turned out to be a great decision.

While I intended to wake up at 5, ended up snoozing until 6.

But still, it's far better than what I was used to.

I have finalized the topic for my book, and have already started collecting resources, I will use to create an outline.

In fact, waking up early, I was able to do the following:

- Worked on the publishing business for an hour, right after waking up.
-Took a walk, enjoyed some sunshine! Man, morning sunshine is priceless, I don't know how I did without it for so many years.
-10 min Yoga done.
-Worked another 4-5 hours.

I still have a lot of time before bed, and I might be able to squeeze in an hour or two more.

Challenges faced today:

-Almost similar to the previous two days, but this time getting up early helped get the job done!

Lesson Learned:

Wake up early! The first half of the day is quite powerful, and can help you accomplish a lot more.

No wonder, having a full time job, and then trying to raise a business on the side becomes more challenging than it should be.

That's it for today.

Cheers!

Hi,
Here is an advice for you - from one authorpreneur to another.

I already make 10K per month as an author.
but this is NOT from book sales.
the majority of the money comes from my online-courses.
I have different courses about writing, blogging and marketing. Those make the real money. Books are only good for reputation an list building.
it is easier to sell 100 courses for$100 than to sell 10.000 ebooks for $1.

Just as an advice.
Most authors don’t make their money with books but with consulting, speaking, courses, workshops and seminars.
Figure out what’s best for you.
Best regards from Germany.

Ahhh, the ever-present myth of the back-end. If I had a dime for every time I heard it, I'd have... well... probably more than I get from my own back-end.

I agree partly with what you said, but only partly. Let me explain why, and why @aum might be better off focusing on writing books alone.

Most authors don’t make their money with books but with consulting, speaking, courses, workshops and seminars.

Non-fiction authors, maybe. Fiction, none of them. Even for non-fiction authors, it's not like any of these things happen naturally. I'm a pretty popular author in my niche, yet so far over the years I've received maybe two offers for public speaking and just a few inquiries about consulting and/or workshops/seminars. When I sell my own courses and other products (to a list of well over 20,000 people), I usually don't even make 5% of what I make from my books.

Of course, if I worked on it, I would get more opportunities, but I wouldn't need to write books for that; I could just focus on giving talks from the start, record each one, and build a network to get better and better gigs. Or just start doing courses right away, without writing any books.

it is easier to sell 100 courses for$100 than to sell 10.000 ebooks for $1.

That depends on your product, market, and marketing. In many niches, it's very difficult to come up with a product that you could sell for $100 and convince 100 people to buy it, particularly since often the content of the course is exactly the same as of the book.

I have different courses about writing, blogging and marketing. Those make the real money. Books are only good for reputation an list building.

Because this is one of the few topics where there's money, the old "I'll teach you how to make money teaching others how to make money." I'm not saying your content is bad, just pointing out that for most authors, they just don't want to teach others how to make money, or it won't work in the same way as these topics do.

A person who writes books about, say, photography, shouldn't automatically assume that a book is only to build reputation and then they have to sell courses about how to teach others how to take photos or how to make money off photography. There are way too many writing/blogging/marketing, etc. courses already. I, for one, would rather read a book about say, swimming, written by someone who focuses on swimming than on teaching others how to build a business teaching others how to swim.

And again, IMO an authorpreneur is a person who's primarily focused on book publishing. You don't need to write books at all if you think they don't make any money; you can just start with creating courses and other digital products right away.

First of all, Congrats on your success!

And I appreciate you providing your insight on building a backend.

The funny thing is, I can't tell you how often I hear about the backend as a non-fiction author.

In fact, at the time of writing this, I have a pitch in my email by some successful author teaching how to make 6 figures from your book quickly. And it involves high ticket upsells. And he's following up (automated messages of course) aggressively, to make me successful, or him? May be? I don't know.

When I think about myself in a situation where I read an ebook, lets say for $2.99 hoping I will get the answer to my problem or learn how to do something, and then find that the book was just a lead magnet, to milk more money off me, it puts me off.

For instance, in the personal development niche - I have been a self-help junkie, and I can't tell you the no. of times, one offer (upsell) leads to another, in hopes of having the best version of my self.

And then, I come across some other authentic self-help authors, very few out there, that
tell the truth as it is: The problem isn't a lower version of a self or a higher version of a self, the problem is the illusion of the self itself.

And that's it, bam, moment of truth, I get what I want, all in an ebook.

May be selling an ebook will be harder, may be I will have to get another part time job next year, if I don't do well, but I am not going to let that fear cause me to take more money from people than I deserve, and that they need to part with.

I want to solve their problems, without them needing to pay a small fortune for it.

I want to do, what I wish others would do to me. Care for me, as a fellow human being.

I want to solve the damn problem in that 2.99 dollar ebook.

But I can't thank you enough for your advise, because it made me put into words, what I would rather do.

Wishing you the best!

Cheers!

Thank you so much!

Wrote the first 1000 words towards the initiative.

What I am liking about the process is, I get to choose a topic I have an affinity towards, which also means, I end up learning more about it.

So while I create an asset, I also benefit from the lessons I learn from it.

In a way, that is a reward in itself.

Challenges I faced today:

-I felt like time is slipping away, and I haven't been as productive as I expected myself to be.

Worries like, when will I ever publish a book, and when will it start making any real money. Ha!

How I overcame this:

I know that I am onto something new. And I was reminded of the Chinese Bamboo tree analogy. Here's an article I found, in case you care to know more. How Success is Like a Chinese Bamboo Tree - Matt Morris

So I know that it's okay to move slowly, as long as I am taking one step forward. Success in life or in business in the end comes down to the right attitude.

-Self-doubts as to whether I am kidding myself by saying I will make it as an Author.

I had an old carpal tunnel like pain come up. This had happened the last time I wrote a book.

Made me worried, only for a moment. But I knew with the right exercises, this is not going to be an issue.

Plus I plan to learn to talk my books using Dragon software in the long run.

That's it for today.

I want to get back to waking up early, didn't do that for the last two days.

Cheers!

Execution Update Day 10

Today was a good day.

Did more research. I like the idea of picking a topic that you want to learn more about and write a book around it.

Had no idea, I'd learn so much along the way.

Last time I wrote a book, my target audience was just about everyone. And that was a problem.

This time, I won't be making that mistake.

-Another 400 words added as a result of research.

Total word count for the draft - 1400 words so far.

I have still have some more research to do. So I will probably be spending tomorrow as well on the same.

I will begin writing the book from Monday if not sooner.

Challenges I faced today:

None. Except for the fact that I did not wake up at 6. That is one area I need to work on.

Why this path to an unscripted life is starting to appear like a natural way to live.

I was out taking a walk in nature, as I always love to do.

My focus was on the beautiful sky, and the birds fluttering around.

The eagles gliding away through the winds, enjoying their evening.

What occurred to me was, these birds, they have almost zero security in terms of where food will come from, whether they will find their nest at its place.

Inspite of this, they are chirpy, which to me sounds like they're happy, almost without concern.

Now if you took the same eagle that loves to glide freely, enjoy its flight, and put it in a cage, and became a caring provider, that would still mean nothing to it.

They would do anything to be free. For a bird doesn't belong in a cage, it belongs in the wide open sky. That is its true home.

Made me wonder if we humans belonged in a cage?

As to me, I prefer being an Eagle in the sky with my insecurities, than in a secure cage.

Cheers!

Day 11:

Today I did some non-productive tasks on the backend for my Author website.

Other than that, took a day off.

Had fun!

Have you published books before you resigned? You should do it as a side hustle first. It is not as easy as it looks.
