I'll jump straight to it.

  • I make between 300-450GBP per month with my weekend jobs (pay varies due to overtime & no. weeks in the month).
  • I invest 100GBP per month into mutual funds.
  • Driving lessons are between 140-180GBP per month (depending how many weeks are in the month).
  • Food expenses range drastically depending how much I'm out (I'm actively going out less to save money).

Here's my dilemma and what I'd like advice on.

I want to build a SaaS system for barber shops/salons & need to learn how to code to do it as I can't afford to hire developers. I have been learning to code for just over a month or so and expect to finish the basic courses in a couple weeks time. I also don't think I really have the left over money to invest in product testing & idea validation after the investments, driving lessons & food money comes out.

Which of the following should I do?
- Make a plan to learn web design & development to freelance for extra income
- Try finding another 'regular' job during the week for extra income & learn code
- Continue learning code 'full-time' and figure out how to build the SaaS business whilst maintaining my current monthly income.

Some other notes:
I need 3-4k for a car and insurance (plus 100-200 a month for fuel).
I can spend 50 a month on books.

If you made it this far, thank you so much for reading, this forum has opened my eyes to so many things. If anyone has some advice for a 17 year old kid, I'd be the most grateful one in the world.

- Connor :)

Would it also just be worth sitting down and writing a plan for each one. e.g Plan to make an extra £200 this month?

Then stop action faking and get to it

I would look at what you atcually need and reduce your exspenses where necessary.

- eating out do you really need to waste money on food eating out , pack lunches saves money.
- driving lessons. / do you really need a car right now can you go with out a car. If you absolutely need a car buy cheap look for cars that have strong engines that run forever. Can you drive by that I mean clutch control if manual if auto and you drive slow in a controlled manner if so fast track driving school Can get you past in 10 lessons or less i passed in 5 lessons easy feat if confident behind the wheel.

I also am funding my own my venture through a night job (works for me ) which I get quite a lot of free time to study what I need and also gives me time through the weekday to get other shit done.

I found once I got my personal finances sorted things get easier to plan. Start there and you may solve part of your money problem, that way you can see if you need a extra cash you can decide what action is best to take to get it.
best of luck buddy hope this helps.

Thank you! Personally I don’t mind waiting a bit longer to get a car but my parents really want me to get one (and since I was little I’ve been itching to start driving). So I’m not too sure what the best option is.

I’ll set aside a monthly food budget and stay under that which should help. Would it be worth getting another regular job in the week to fund my ventures as my income is varied?

Thank you so much for your reply

I would go for it. The thing is, most companies/start-ups at the beginning doesn't have work for an 8h work day. Till that, I see nothing wrong earning some additional money. Optimal would be something where you also get some insights in your topic. So perhapse something either software related or in the target industry.

That would be up to you i think once you get finances sorted you can see what your average budget is and if you need more money take it from there.
I took a extra job that doesn't burn me out that pays okay and gives me time to learn and work on venture etc.
If you have a skill you can freelance go for it. But if its somert you got to learn to do before executing then you got to think
- how long will it take from study to first client
- Is it gunna take time away from your venture if so how much and can you put the extra time you have taken from your venture.

These are just a few questions i asked my self when setting out i was in a time consuming job earning shit so i quite and changed jobs to a less time consuming even tho it's more hours because its on a night. (i work for the NHS now as a healthcare support worker on their agency so i pick the days i work so if i need more time for xyz i just work less) i get alot of free time when patients are asleep like now writing this from work and even at work i have more free time working 48 hours earning 2.5k pcm than i did working 30hrs. Anyway I digress what I getting at is for me a job was just easier and quicker for me to reach my goals as i wasn't splitting focus. That just my opinion and please take with a pinch of salti but you should do what you feel is right you.

P.s your young and the more skills under your belt the better imo knowledge is power.

Thank you so much, this is a really insightful response. I’m glad you’re enjoying the flexibility whilst working for the NHS, you’re doing a really good deed too!

I’ll definitely sit down later to budget and consider how long it’ll take to learn freelancing and get first clients. I’ll weigh my options and come back :)

Thanks so much for the reply

Just to be clear, are you saying go for it by seeing if the time it take to learn the skill i need to freelance would be worth it or get a regular job?

Hi, I'm in a similar position to you, I just started driving and I'm wondering what to pursue (I'm thinking of making a product). But I think that job is a great thing for experience and knowledge of how a job works. You can use any downtime in the job to keep learning, and speaking of that, you can use Library Genesis to get books for free and put them on your phone with an ebook app if you really want to. I prefer physical books, but it's your decision... also, on eating out, try learning some basic meals to make for yourself. You can microwave eggs in a mug and add some spinach, or use a greens supplement in milk, or protein powder.

I don't know anything about SAAS, or web design, but it sounds like u can hit it big and you're building a really good foundation. Keep going bro, keep learning

Hey Brother, You have started to think about business so early , that's so great of you! I have built my business while I was in college 3rd year. Start slowly, the path will show you! There will be failure when you build your first busines, but failing in business is a honor( after giving 100%) because you had shown the courage to do it.

And yes don't invest in Mutual Funds.( It's a Slowlane doctrine)

And yes I'm a programmer, you can learn html css and firebase to get your basic Saas started, it will take around 1. To 1.6 years to put it on the table( without hiring)

Do it yourself! Use youtube , buy a course from udemy now things are way easier to built!

Keep the hustle up!

Thank you so much mate. When i’m at home I cook all my own food (gotta hit those calories ) but it’s just going out during the day seeing some friends where the money gets spent.

I usually set myself a limit but I just need to prepare food and eat before I go out.

What you say about jobs is what i’m thinking too. I do prefer physical books but not too sure what jobs to apply for. I already work 2 jobs at the weekends and earlier I saw a web design apprentice role come up. Requirements were knowing the basics in HTML & CSS which I think i have. I might consider apply for this.

Thank you for the comment!

Thank you! Once I finish CSS basics I’m going to buy a more in depth web design course on udemy then do my own personal website for some practise.

I understand mutual funds are ‘slowlane’ but I see it as something to fall back on (like a high interest, high risk savings account). I’m not relying on it or wishing for it to be the only reason I retire with millions but just as a safety net if you will.

I’ll also check out some stuff on firebase to get the SaaS started. I’m quite a quick learner so once I apply some concepts it shouldn’t be extremely drawn out (although I welcome the bumps and hurdles for the learning experiences!).

I’m also slightly torn between wanting my first business to succeed or to fail to teach me the most valuable lessons. (In a werid way)

Update:

Had a call yesterday from a golf course regarding a 40hr a week position. I’m going to take it because it allows me to invest into my venture (I have zero overheads except driving lessons and investments).

I’ve played golf there before and It’s a really nice place. The plan is get up early, work, finish at 2pm and code during the afternoon and night. (obviously socialising a few times a week to not become lonely).

Connor, I am in a similar boat to you! Except I am older. I am British, have just seen my 20th birthday and have had to leave home due to abuse. I just finished reading the millionaire fastlane . I am relatively untalented, and I have dabbled in coding a bit. I have a similar idea for an SaaS buisness. Do you mind sharing what courses you have been using to learn about it?

Thanks,

James

Hey, I learned how to code full stack applications for free using 'freecodecamp'. Start off learning the basics of HTML/CSS/(JS or TS) and then just jump into one of the free courses on full stack development on the freecodecamp YT channel. I found it best to learn by doing.

Find another business idea that is not so taxing on your current circumstances.

You are a full time student and you want to embark on a business that you have no money, time or relevant coding skill for it…
