My quiet Saturday night reflection:

I tend to compare myself to my peers...I am still working at a normal 9-5 job and sometimes I get caught up in the "competition" at work. Sometimes I am tempted to get an MBA, etc.

Besides hitting your business out of the park, what is the best way to deprogram yourself from the slow lane?

Watch 'Rocky' again or something similar.
Why would anyone want to waste their time on getting an MBA when their ultimate goal is to be an entrepreneur?

Really? How many MBA's have a Fastlane biz?

If I wanted an MBA, I'd just hire one.

Hah, probably to impress people at cocktail parties. Yeah it is stupid I know. Also just in case the entrepreneurship thing doesn't workout.

I realize it is a matter of burning my boat at the shore and fighting for what I REALLY want.

When I win...what do I really win? MBA/debt->slow lane.

No offense, I wouldn't even consider comparing myself to slowlaners.

Comparing yourself to others is a negative habit. Be grateful for what you are and what you have.

You're here because you know that the Fastlane is the truth. Stay focused and don't doubt yourself. You have nothing to fear but fear itself.

I would suggest reading Anthony Robbins' Awaken the Giant Within. Good book about limiting beliefs, empowering beliefs, psychology, etc.

... what is the best way to deprogram yourself from the slow lane?

By NOT spending money to keep up with the Jones. I take a simple pleasure driving my little 2006 Toyota Corrolla, and not buying a laptop I don't need.

By appreciating the little things like going to an empty gym at 8am, or having a coffee and watching the world go by without worrying about a boss timing me.

It's a journey @MetalGear. Revel in each step along the way.

Maybe check out these two threads?

Yeah, f*** the jones'. I don't like their average way of life, huge mortgage and unfulfilling jobs.
Not comparing myself to people that are not where I wan't to be has been the most important change for me.
It's feels incredibly liberating when you stop caring.
I feel bad for the people who still do.
Freedom is everything.

This. I get told all the time that I need to go get an MBA so I can be a CFO somewhere, which to me means "spend the next 20 years of your life looking after someone else's money so you can pay 150k to Berkeley or NYU and mortgage a half million dollar house."

All I want is mid morning coffee on a weekday, but screw the Corolla, I want a little pickup :clench:

I had a lot of deprogramming to do also. In hindsight, here are some things I would want to know/employ:

1. Realize deprogramming will take some time. In my case a few years.
2. Question everything. Why do I make certain decisions: By observing what others do or what I really "want" to do.
3. Realize the "Jones's" argument is BS and flawed. Math will dictate that is impossibly to keep up with "all the Jonses's of the world".
4. Take a serious look into methods to start changing your thought process. The ones that worked for me were: NLP, selected business coaching, this forum, selected TFF events.
5. Stop taking advice/listening to people that fully subscribe to the dogma you wish to escape.
6. Kill the TV/news etc. subscriptions.
7. Meditate
8. Get rid of physical stuff you don't really want or need.
9. Pick one physical thing that you like (that other's don't) and make it a badge. Everybody hates my truck, but I don't care because it represents something to me. It's my representation of freedom. Freedom from loans, caring what others think, whether or not it is locked, etc.
10. Research the Golden Handcuff Theory. Look around your office and see it in full force. Decide if you want that or not.
11. Stop agreeing with everything. Start using the word "no" when you need to.

Hopefully this list will get you thinking. It's up to you to decide what mindset is optimal to get you where you want to go. Good Luck either way!

The most important thing is mindset. What do you want your life to mean? I know that sounds fluffy, what I mean is, you have to make a list of your objectives in your life and then organize them through the lens of practicality into targets achievable in next 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 1 year, 3 years and 5 years. Once you attempt to organize things to do in those timeframes, you will better understand what you can do now versus later.

I recommend you read Simon Sinek's 2009 Tedx Talk, start with why. It's 18 mins and worth it.

At least one.

I actually think it would be good for me to get one later down the line, doesn't make sense right now since I need to have some capital on hand for my projects. I used to want one for the wrong reasons, I think mainly to tell people I went to "xyz" university as opposed to the knowledge.

Thanks! That is a great list of suggestions. I think it boils down to solidifying your identity and being intentional with your time and energy.

The best reason to get one is the connections you'll make....Over the course of my life, my business school connections will likely be worth millions to me...

Great point, I have a friend that went to a top-three business school and he was surrounded by titans and connections like you say. I am putting that dream on hold for now since I need the cash for my business venture. I noticed that you went to school almost 10 years after undergrad, do you feel like having this experience helped you? Also do you think the debt was worth it?

sail for 6 weeks on the ocean. With 40 people from other countries. Without almost nothing but food and eachother.
Then you will realise, what you want and what you don`t want in life.
Please make a thread about this! I have to hear this story.
