Ahhh, conversion tracking. Bane of my life.

I laughed at this:

I won't quite go the step of not starting work until conversion tracking is in place, and often conversion tracking never quite fully works when people are ringing in rather than buying online. Sure, Google Ads reported they had 5 phone calls yesterday, but how many were bona-fide leads?

Anyway, if they've got Google Analytics on the site then request access so you can link it to Google Ads, and then import the goals into Google Ads as conversions (you may need to setup goals if they've not been setup).

Tracking phone calls from the website can be done using Google Forwarding Numbers, or Callrail, etc. I personally don't implement that part but get my techie to do it.

If you're generating form fills using the same form that non Google Ads visitors use then see if they can capture the referring URL (I think that's what it's called) and send that as part of the form.

We put the keyword and device into the ad URL, as well as utm_campaign=google and utm_source=cpc.

Here's what we use as standard actually:

domain.com/landingpage/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=d*{ifmobile:mb}{ifnotmobile:dt}_k*{keyword}_m*{matchtype}_c*{creative}_p*{adposition}_n*{network}

Higher-level, I like clients to fill in on a weekly basis how many enquiries, leads, bookings/sales/clients they had the previous week - in total across all marketing channels. They'll then try to identify which were from Google Ads, and we'll help them if they find that hard.

We want to see how well these match up with the Google Ads reported figures.

Thank you Andy!

She doesn't even know who to contact when it comes to website stuff. I'm still waiting on her to tell me if she can email the IT department with the google tag manager snippets.

I'll ask her if she knows if they've got Google Analytics on the site (I doubt she'll know who to ask about that though).

As far as Google Forwarding Numbers, or Callrail, I thought I'd have the same problem as the Hotjar or Google tag manager -> no access to the website's development. I'll do some research to see if I can implement those things without website access.

The form fills are a great idea. I still have to get in touch with the IT department for the referring URL.

It's hard to believe that she'll be the first agency within this big corporation to run Google Ads and need conversion tracking. It's also hard to believe that she's gotten 20 clicks and no results, but she said it's possible. She just doesn't know.

A bit frustrating.
