I started a Google Ads account for a new client 7 days ago. She's an independent insurance agent for a corporate insurance company.

I've got 400 impressions and only 20 clicks (5% CTR) spending $10/day across the account.

She's not sure if any of her sales last week were from the ads because about the same amount of business was done. When she asked people how they found her, they just say "the internet".

I can't install Hotjar because its a corporate website.

I haven't installed Google Ads conversion tracking either because as I understand it, you need to install tags into the website's backend development.

This is my first time running an account for a corporate insurance agency.

The only ways I'm aware of to ensure profitability from the ads is:
1. She calls me and says "this person found me through the ads"
2. Hotjar shows me what people are clicking on
3. Conversion tracking on the website

Is anyone else aware of some other ways I can figure out if the work I've done for her is getting results?

Get Google Tag Manager installed on their site ASAP. It will allow you to install things without requiring a developer to do it and can manage marketing metrics on the site.

The insurance company must have some way to do this, otherwise don't send it to the corporate site.

If the insurance company is any good, many allow the adding of a pixel to specific pages for sales reps. If you can't then you are throwing your client's money down the toilet.

Create your own landing page/blog specifically for the ad campaign if needed which does have tracking that you can manage.

Yep, conversion tracking is a must!! Even if she is telling you someone converted through Google Ads, how do you know which keyword/ad/campaign converted? How do you manage bids without knowing what's converting? How do you pause keywords and add negative keywords for queries that are not converting? I won't start work on a Google Ads account until we've 100% verified conversion tracking with a fake transaction through the system. Too many times I've wasted weeks thinking it was active when it wasn't and we just had a whole bunch of data with no conversion data tied to it.

As an independent agency, I don't think corporate gives her access to do that.

I'm waiting on an email response to verify that right now.

Maybe @Andy Black has worked through this sort of thing with lead gen clients before?

Ahhh, conversion tracking. Bane of my life.

I laughed at this:

Phikey said:

Too many times I've wasted weeks thinking it was active when it wasn't and we just had a whole bunch of data with no conversion data tied to it.

I won't quite go the step of not starting work until conversion tracking is in place, and often conversion tracking never quite fully works when people are ringing in rather than buying online. Sure, Google Ads reported they had 5 phone calls yesterday, but how many were bona-fide leads?

Anyway, if they've got Google Analytics on the site then request access so you can link it to Google Ads, and then import the goals into Google Ads as conversions (you may need to setup goals if they've not been setup).

Tracking phone calls from the website can be done using Google Forwarding Numbers, or Callrail, etc. I personally don't implement that part but get my techie to do it.

If you're generating form fills using the same form that non Google Ads visitors use then see if they can capture the referring URL (I think that's what it's called) and send that as part of the form.

We put the keyword and device into the ad URL, as well as utm_campaign=google and utm_source=cpc.

Here's what we use as standard actually:

domain.com/landingpage/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=d*{ifmobile:mb}{ifnotmobile:dt}_k*{keyword}_m*{matchtype}_c*{creative}_p*{adposition}_n*{network}

Higher-level, I like clients to fill in on a weekly basis how many enquiries, leads, bookings/sales/clients they had the previous week - in total across all marketing channels. They'll then try to identify which were from Google Ads, and we'll help them if they find that hard.

We want to see how well these match up with the Google Ads reported figures.

It's also hard to believe that she's gotten 20 clicks and no results, but she said it's possible. She just doesn't know.

A bit frustrating.

No access to the website. I’m not surprised.

I set up call forwarding through Google though.

I’m not really worried about it because like @Andy Black says, either they’re happy with the results or they aren’t.

She’s got like 1,000+ impressions and only like 40 clicks. I know KPI’s are just KPI’s, but she’s only said for sure that she’s got 1 client out of it for a very minimal policy. So we’re not profitable yet.

I spent this morning making better ad copy for the top 6 ads where most of the impressions are coming from. Hopefully that helps.

I’m thinking about tightening my matching to exact match because everything is in mod broad and out of 1600 ads, the same 6 keep getting most of the impressions.

Does anyone have any insight on that?
