After watching this thread last weekend, I created a digital product in 2 days and now uploaded it on Gumroad. Tomorrow, I'll create a website. Thanks Lex!!

Wow, super interesting thread. I love the simplicity of this system and will definitely follow your plan.

I have a question regarding AI: what do you think will be the impact of AI on this business?

An AI can already create most of these products itself today. Isn't it just a matter of time before the market is completely flooded with offers? Or am I being too pessimistic here?

Define "the market"

AI can create products, but it doesn't create them autonomously. It has to be prompted by humans, which is why we are serving niche markets. There are millions of niches, so the market will not be flooded with offers, because niches get ignored.

Eventually, AI will handle everything, but it will be years before every niche imaginable is saturated.

So build a business now, that can start selling this week, and grow enormously profitable long before saturation occurs.

Just because it's passive income doesn't mean it has to take years to grow.

I see. That makes a lot of sense. I will do that. Thanks.

I just need to find a product. I have already been looking for one in the last couple of days, but most of them don't have any search volume on the Google Keyword Planner. But that does not mean that I am going to stop because now I can at least rule out a couple of potential products and I am getting closer to a good one step by step.

Updates
After reflecting on Site 1 in my INSIDERS thread, I've decided to focus only on that site until I've maxed out its growth. Site 2 no longer exists. Sites 3 and 4 will remain online, but I'm not going to split my attention with them for now. I'll still post updates and thoughts and respond to questions about this process.

FOMO.com
Once you have traffic to your site, the FOMO plugin (or similar apps) is a really powerful tool for building credibility since it leverages the actions people take on your website (even non-sales actions) to prove to others you're legit. If you have no other credibility, it's a good way to build some. If you use FOMO, it comes with a free trial period so you can get going without investing anything.

ChatGPT
As of yesterday, I'm implementing ChatGPT 4 to write content emails for my email list.

Etsy
I see a lot of you picking out Etsy from everything I wrote and leaning on it as a crutch. There's a reason I barely mentioned it in the OP. If you treat this like a hobby, you'll get hobby results.

Unique Entry Point
When I created the product for Site 1, I didn't just take someone else's product and sell it under a different brand name. I modified it to solve a problem for a different group of people. This provided a unique entry point into the market.

Stop searching for products. Start searching for solutions.

Here's an idea I searched for this morning (not as a product, but because I need TY cards for my business). Thank You Card Templates. You could easily take this and niche it down. Product can be made in 10 minutes or less using a Canva Thank You Card Template... This shop opened last year.

I'm seeing a lot of people talking about starting.

But I think I've only seen two people start a progress thread.

How are the rest of you doing?

Should've done differently:
I should've started a lot sooner. I had the idea for Site 1 over two years ago. There are a few other things, but I'm doing those things differently by adding another site.

Spreading Myself Too Thin
The first site caused some trouble with Google and Etsy and it worries me that more will follow in the future. I also think the market for the first site isn't very big. Without adding another site, the first site becomes too risky, and I expect it will stall out in terms of how big it can grow. I expect it can grow slightly more, but not a lot, so it isn't a priority.

What is the end goal?
There are two end goals. The first end goal was to build new passive income streams that I had more control over so I could finally let go of freelancing. I told myself if I replaced freelancing with something else then I would quit for good.

The second goal (the bigger one) is to see if I can build passive income websites quickly that can be sold. That's almost certainly not happening with the first site (and was never the intent for that site).

I'd like to find out if I can build a site in 30 days or less, get it up and earning for some months, and then cash out.

Always remember the 4-point plan.

Sorry, I haven't had time to do a progress thread. I've had my head down trying to get a new book ready for launch.

I did run my first Google Ad campaign and it bombed. Three impressions and no clicks in 7 days.
On the plus side, I now know my way around a lot of the dashboard, options and tools, even if I can't figure out why the first ad didn't get impressions.

I've now set up a new campaign using a subset of the original keywords. It's been approved and already pulled more impressions in three hours than the other one. I'll continue to monitor, refine and experiment until I get results. Then I'll scale up by creating ads for some of my other products.

I'll now going back to creating the video course to go with my new book.

I went looking for a digital product, anything. I came across one that caught my attention because in a way it is "somewhat related" to a job I did years ago. I had no idea that such a digital product could be sold in 2023, with all the software capabilities available today to do the same (and better!).

I spent several days doing market research in the google planner (and trend too) and I found that:
* is a set of products listed with searches between 10k to 100k.
* when I search by niche, a line usually appears. Zero search by niche. In a certain way I understand it, it is a product that tends to be more of a general use product.

I started on Monday to prepare a product of the 6 or 7 that the basket has inside. I still have to make some modifications to it to make it productive in a different mode. It is not a product that is done in 1 hour, but in 3-4 days for someone who is in it all the time (I've been away for years so I'm retraining)

From time to time I am assailed by great doubts. How will I niche it? Or should I present it in a general format, as the searches appear? Maybe I'm not looking for the niches correctly in the Google planner.

Sometimes I wonder if I chose the right product or should I make "Thank you" templates?

For now I continue with the elaboration of 2 more products, the most difficult to elaborate but the best sellers. I hope to have them soon within 2 weeks and publish. It's being more challenging than I thought at first. And this is just beginning.

Thanks Lex for everything you've put into this thread (and the other one too). Also Andy for his enormous contribution with Ads.

Whatever happened to that dude? His tagline was so full of promise, and I never saw him get aggressive with anyone. Lol.

Sharing for motivation. Sales for Site 1 increased by about $1,500 in March. When all revenue sources are included for March, the system generated over $6,000 to wrap up the 4th month online.

Major changes included adjustments to Google Ads, adding ebay as a sales channel, improving the flow of my shop page, and leveraging ChatGPT 4.0 to write daily content emails.

To add a small contribution to this amazing thread:

I tested many sales channels for my side hustles and while Gumroad is known to be the most famous for its simplicity, it's not always the best choice as it can be frustrating due to lack of some useful features.

I just wanted to highlight another webstore builder called Podia.

Podia is like Gumroad (and many others): it allows you to quickly sell something online.

What it does better:
  • More customization thanks to a real website builder. You can create several pages (About, Shop, etc.) through a drag and drop system.
  • Built-In compatibility with online courses, webinars and coaching (+ usual digital products ofc). Create your own Udemy.
  • Built-In affiliate and email marketing features.
  • Set up several paid subscription plans if you want a shop built on that strategy.
  • A lot of integrations (Google Analytics, Google Ads, ESPs, etc.) to expand the features of your shop. It works well with Fomo (which is a great converting tool as @Lex DeVille said).
  • It has a Zapier integration, which basically allows one to make it combo with thousands of third-party apps.
  • PRICING. You can start for free with access to most of those features for a 8% fee. Then you can upgrade to a paid plan which adds more (especially custom website domains) for 39$/month and no more fees. To be compared with Gumroad which has a fixed 10% fee no matter the amount of money you make.
Podia is not the perfect solution, but from my experience it is a very cool way to start.

It's still very simple to set up like Gumroad but with more features and a fair pricing. A good alternative for those who quickly want to get started without spending too much time on building a real website (even if you can also quickly get started on WordPress, this generally requires more knowledge and maintenance).

Good thread.

I once ran across a company on Flippa that was making (if I remember well) 90k/month selling erotic e-books on Amazon written by AI....

They were using keyword services (Helium10, JungleScout, etc) to know what to sell.

A variant of this for people who don't like "taking risks" is to use trends-predicting software like Glimpse or Exploding Topics who tell you which products have high chances of exploding in the upcoming weeks/months.

My current website opt-in is for a starter guide for my product (a pdf that covers FAQs). The conversion rate on the opt-in box isn't great at 12.08%, but it delivered 251 new emails to my list. Of those, 31 people requested I add them to a 7-day email mini-course after receiving the initial lead magnet delivery. Of those who completed the mini-course, 27 became customers.

Initial opt-in: 12.08% Conversions
Total Opt-Ins: 251
Mini-Course: 31
Customers: 27

So sales conversions for those who enter the mini-course are at 87%, and this tells me two things:

1. I need to improve my opt-in. That could mean I need to add more opt-in opportunities throughout the site. It could also mean I need to improve the copywriting or design of the opt-in box. It could even mean I need to try a more appealing lead magnet. All of these are pretty easy to test.

2. I need to do better at moving people to the mini-course. For this, I'll need to revisit my lead magnet email as well as the follow-up email automation so I can give readers more opportunities to join the 7-day mini-course. I'll need to look at open rates on all of the emails so I know if I need to adjust the subject line, and I'll need to look at clickthrough rates to know if I need to adjust the body copy to make it more actionable. Lastly, I need to test the changes and compare with the original results (A/B testing) to learn which version actually works best.

This thread is awesome Lex, thank you.

This post made me realize that I need to use an opt-in to segment my email list and find the right people for my product.

I am going to create a mini-course this week like what you suggested. Then I will ask new email subscribers if they would like to opt-in to a secondary email list to get the mini-course.

Why don't you just make the mini course itself your lead magnet?

That's what I'm setting up today. Makes the most sense because it's the closest to the sale. It's a better filter anyway since the entire purpose of the mini-course presents itself as a 7-day preparation to get them ready to buy our product. Basically, anyone who joins should already know they want to become a customer. They just need a little extra push.

Are you going to promote your product just on the last day of the course, or the last 2-3 days, or every day? In other words, is it possible to overdo it?

I have 5 out of 7 days of the course ready, hoping to finish up tonight.

I have a soft pitch on the third email, and a P.S. pitch on the 5th and 6th emails. The 7th email has a direct CTA. Emails 3-6 also have links to other pages on my site like FAQ page and our support page.

To clarify for anyone who doesn't know what a mini-course is, it's just regular emails, but I label them Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 etc. Each day is a normal text email that I would send out as a regular campaign. I just put it into an automation so the emails get sent out automatically.

Most of the job of the mini-course is to come at the prospect's sales objections from numerous angles over a period of days until they don't have any more reasons not to buy.

^^^ This.

If someone's searching on Google with credit card in hand to BUY your product or service then don't ask them to join a community or ask them to opt-in for a lead magnet. Send them to a checkout page and gtfo of their way.

And if they're looking for information then give them ... information.

I don't see a "huge push away from ads". Some businesses prefer to run ads rather than do "content marketing" or even SEO. And for many businesses it makes no sense to build a community, newsletter, or YouTube channel, etc.

I remember listening to a podcast a few years ago where the host and interviewer agreed that if you don't have a community then you don't have a business. I switched off there and then. That's what they were selling... how to build a community, and they'd drank the koolaid and were forcing it on their audience (sorry, community).
You could always ask for an opt in after they have paid and finished check out! Right??

Start searching for solutions.
im really glad for you to work this out and that you have so much success with it. not wanting to steal your thread but ive read your post 2 weeks ago and followed through with your step by step thing and after i did some basic research i now have my product ready (took me longer than 1 day but who cares), website ready (wordpress) and set up email et cetera. the only thing missing is the product pages itself, which i wanted to keep short and clean but now youve said that you make a full 2000 word post for each product, which is great but idk if i should do that too. my products are priced at 19.99 and with upsell a bit higher so i don't know if a huge copywriting would turn people off on this one. anyways, i wanted to ask you to look over my website and tell me if i could do something better but i couldnt figure out how to send you a dm.

and keep up with your work and this thread! huge thanks for that :)

So, it's Friday.

Site 2 is mobile-optimized, online, and just needs products added for sale.

Site 3 is online, but needs text on the About page, mobile-optimized, and products added for sale.

Both sites should be ready for ads by Monday.

A few additional thoughts:

Q - Why do you need terms/privacy/disclaimer/contact/about pages?
A - Because you don't have reviews yet. You have no social proof. So you leverage other points of credibility to put consumers at ease about doing business with you until you get social proof.

Q - Why does the site need to be mobile-optimized right now?
A - Because all your customers are shopping from their phones.

Q - Why are we starting with Google Ads and not Facebook?
A - Because people who click Google ads want to buy specific shit.

Q - What if my product descriptions suck?
A - Let ChatGPT write them for now. Clean them up later.

Q - What if I can't afford Google Ads?
A - I plan to start with a small daily budget under $10. You can start as low as $1.00 I think. Assuming you picked a proven product and a solid niche, you should see sales quickly. Assuming you price your product high enough to run ads without eating a hole in your pocket, you should get profitable fast, which means you can spend more on ads to get more sales.

Q - What if I don't know how to do Google Ads?
A - Follow @Andy Black - I literally have no idea what I'm doing with Google Ads most of the time, but they make money. Beyond Andy's stuff, you'll spend time Googling how to use Google's ads. At some point, you'll want to set up conversion tracking through your website, but that can come later on.

Q - What about the blog?
A- Once you get your site online with ads running to it, then you can work on a few long-form blog posts if you want to capture more organic traffic.
Why do you have 3 sites?
