Hey Yall,

I wanted to start this thread for anyone who needs that extra motivation to start their path. I know I've benefitted from these kinds of posts figured I add back that value.

My goal is to get more into Dropshipping. Dropshipping was my first attempt at the Fastlane journey. But, a series of failed attempts put me back on the drawing board. I haven't given up!

I'll be following @Sean Marshall post on starting a digital agency for the next 90 days.

The niche I'm shooting for is: email copywriting set up using Klaviyo, with a specific focus on eCommerce.

My projected #'s:
  • 1k for the first month
  • 2k the second month
  • 4k the third month
I know this doesn't compare to what others may strive for, but I've set financial goals in the past and have always bit off more than I could chew. I'll lowball to establish momentum before anything else

What to expect from these posts is:
  • I'll post how many pomodoros I do on a given day. (I work in 25-minute pomodoros, but 90% of the time I do two back to back and then take a 10-minute break.) I'll break down the category of each Pomodoro for extra context
  • I'll do a round-up of my pomodoros per week
  • A breakdown of #s. Cold emails, conversions, and generally any valuable information I can provide or would be helpful

The most dangerous form of inspiration is when someone is three steps ahead of you and you don't even know it. So, to clarify, I'm not starting from scratch. Where I'm starting from:
  • I've got a computer science degree
  • I'm 31, been out of college for 4 years
  • I've started roughly 6 businesses from, content writing, dropshipping, SEO, and programming freelance. I've had some successes here and there, but nothing much
  • I've been studying

My end goal here is to make the public commitment towards getting a business off the ground, my biggest problem is hiding behind a screen from fear. I've wasted too much time not putting my offers in front of other people's faces.

If there is anyone else trying to start their own business, let me know! I'd love to share this journey.

No point wasting any more time, let's get started!

Like @BizyDad said, you don’t need a website. I decided to start a landing page productised service on Monday and sold my first today. All I did was post to Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. (It tickles me that we’ve sold dozens of landing pages over the years without a website never mind a landing page.)

Thoughts:

1) Don’t convince people they need Klaviyo. Help the people already paying for it.

2) Consider NOT having goals such as hitting X “result”.

What’s the big domino you want to topple?

Work backwards from there and figure out what domino you need to topple to set off the chain reaction.

Start as close to the end as possible too. (e.g. don’t build a website).

It might be to send X emails, or post Y times on social media.

3) Personally, I’d focus on just getting that first sale, and not worry too much about making it a repeatable process yet.

4) I recommend you don’t start with cold anything. Reach out to your current network first?

Check out the inbound/sales braindump linked to in my signature.

Also check out “Just Start Already”. I posted something similar on Monday to let people know about us thinking about selling landing pages.

Day 15 breakdown:
Current Profits: 0/1000 (Days Left: 13)
Pomodoro Count: 3

  • Emails [x3]
    • Continuing on with finding and contacting as many people as I can.
I'm starting to pick up on how naive it was to set a numbers goal without much of a plan to do that.

As I run out of days to complete this goal, I'm realizing that I've got to change a few things up.

For one, the goal of making $1000 isn't working.

Although it's a goal in the right direction, this goal is pulling me away from getting in contact with customers. I'm rushing decisions that only enable profits. Currently, my goal should be getting testimonials and proof of how valuable my services are to the client.

All I care about is getting in contact with those clients/customers.

What that means is beyond just sending emails for a closing pitch, it's about building up a wealth of context about my market, my customers, and in the end, a clear opportunity to provide value. I've been trying to shape vs. fulfill the demand of the market.

I'll spend the next month focusing on getting to at least 500 points of contact. Whether it's email, social media, or problem-solving on an eCommerce forum, I want to focus on reaching out to as many people as I can within this space(eCommerce). What this goal means is that my new goal is to find 500 NEW points of contact in total.

For the time being, the goal of $1k is delayed, not canceled. I won't give up on that.

What to expect from upcoming posts is:
  • Where I got in contact with someone (LinkedIn, Email, Facebook)
  • An overall # of total contacts end goal being 500
  • How many contacts convert or anything I learn along the way
I apologize for the confusing narrative! Just trying the readjust as quickly as needed to get these goals done.

[Goal 2.0] Day 1 breakdown:
Total Contacts: 10/500 (Days Left: 29)
Pomodoro Count: 8

  • Planning [x2]
    • I had to spend an hour to make sure that all the boxes were checked and I clearly understood my "why". It came down to understanding that if I want to know how I can help others, I've got to get into the flow of finding leads by learning more about them.
  • Contact [x6]
    • Breakdown of Contacts (Total: 10)
      • 4 Personalized Emails
      • 1 LinkedIn Message
      • 5 Upwork Proposals (A lot of Klaviyo jobs going on. I can, at least, confirm the demand!)
This whole process is clunky at best.

I'm following basic guidelines for sending emails such as good attitude intro -> state problem -> state your solution -> strong CTA. I'm not at the point where I can write these emails too quickly as I'm in the midst of learning that skill, but it's coming along. I can definitely see myself improving how many emails I send on a given day.

I'm not too worried about Upwork proposals. I have a decent strategy to close deals on that, I've done so at least a dozen times.

Overall, when the day goes by quickly and I don't have to consider my current state of mind, then that's as effective of a strategy as anything. I have to make sure that I'm being effective and not just staying busy.

I've got to pump my numbers up though! In order to reach my goal of 500 contacts for the month, I've got to average around 17 contacts.

But, nonetheless, good day.

I hope everyone had a great weekend. I can't wait for Spring!

I've been bouncing around a couple of ideas:
  • Showing a gif scrolling through the entire Klaviyo strategy to show that there is substance there
  • Putting up coaching services on my website where I've got mini-lessons on what makes an effective "Welcome" series and such. (I won't actually offer the services until I have some consistency behind my back. I think that this is just an avenue to demonstrate what I know and offer free content to prospects without talking their ear off at first contact.)
I completely agree with personalized email being better. Do you have any rules of thumb or templates that you follow? I usually pull at least two unique points from their website and give my brief thoughts on them. That's as far as my thinking goes. Could also use some tips!

I wonder if you overthink this... At the end of the day, your clients' pain point is that they lose money by losing sales that could have happened via abandoned cart emails, newsletters etc. That's all they really care about. If you can solve that problem, the gig is yours. I don't think they care about the strategy at that point, or ever. In fact, the end goal is that they pay you to just do it and take the pain away.

Have you considered to offer your services for free or cheaper so you can get a testimonial and/or case study that you can refer to?

As for cold emails, I don't use templates, and I actually use a similar strategy, mentioning a couple of things that I notice to improve on. Other tips would be to keep it as short as possible, and make it all about them and their problem, not about you. Sometimes, I also throw in something to make it more human, like mentioning the weather, or if they have something interesting in their About page, I'd refer to that. Also don't be afraid to follow up if they don't reply. Sometimes, it takes a few emails to get them to come back to you.

Exciting times!

Another way to find shopify stores is via builtwith, in case you hadn't seen that one yet.

You could also join shopify groups on facebook. Groups will probably not allow self-promotion, but many people there will have their business in their profile, so you can find their store that way and then contact them outside facebook if you feel you could help them. It's also a good way to see what pain points around email marketing people have.

I'm taking a break for today. Starting a new challenge and taking in all the feedback is definitely pushing this goal forward a lot, but it's new and a bit draining for now. I expect to get more used to the process in a couple of weeks. For now, I'll brainstorm some other ways I could find out more about my market.

I hope yall enjoy your weekend!

There’s a popular saying that “What gets measured gets done.”

Personally I’m not a massive fan of management by numbers, especially at the start of a project where you’re trying to find what works.

Indeed my favourite business quote is the Mother Theresa line in my signature.

I can’t remember if you already mentioned this, but have you joined Facebook groups and online communities of people using Klaviyo and helped them?

If you talk about XYZ, help people with XYZ, and especially help people in public, then you’ll get known as “The XYZ Guy/Gal” and you may find work comes to you.

That would be my preferred way of approaching this.

A lot of the links in my signature may help you.

Over here, over there.
The 500 contacts are for the entire month. I think I'd probably shoot for around 5-10 ish per day. 500 a day would be insane!

When I was doing sales by phone, 500 cold calls PER DAY was the target. Nobody managed to reach it, but that was the target. Best I did was ~350 or something. If your average call is 1 minute that's 6 hours or so, so 500 is doable. The reason it was set like that because the managers were stressing the idea that "if they're not interested, next" and "it's a number's game".

Maybe the quantity you're reaching out to is insufficient? It is a bit on the short side even for personalized stuff. Quality doesn't make THAT big of a difference. Are you taking 25 min to send one email?

Say your conversion rate is 1% if you just personalize the first line for 30s and copypaste the rest. You can send 50 emails/h.
(or have pseudopersonalization that is the same for everyone based on their niche)
And you have 10% conversion rate (very generous) if you take your time and write an email from scratch every time. 2e/h.

50*0.01 = 0.5, 2*0.1 = 0.2. You'd get 2.5x more leads in the same amount of time with the quantity approach.

Doing 100 emails per day is not a big ask.

You just have to find an efficient method to acquire quality leads and contact them. If you plan on having an email marketing agency, that is literally your job. So focusing on improving this part of your business will also help you improve your fulfillment. Good luck.

Have you reached out to other bigger agencies that offer Klaivyo? If you make friends with salespeople at those agencies you can offer to set up a referral partnership. You send them the clients that are "too big" for you, and they can send you the clients tha are "too small" for them. Every big agency is hit with these small price shoppers and want to turn them away. All you have to do is convince them to turn them to you.

And if you really are friends with those salespeople, take them out for a beer and talk shop. Ask about what sales tactics have been working for them...

“Who already has your clients?”

I’ve built my business by building relationships.

A lot of my work came from marketing agencies that don’t do Google Ads, or don’t specialise in it. I recommend having the relationship with the end client if you do this.

[Goal 2.0] Day 10 breakdown:
Total Contacts: 21/500 (Days Left: 20)
Pomodoro Count: 4

  • Preparation [x2]
    • Just simple research and review for the client I'm working with, what to improve, and such.
  • Contacts [x2]
    • I didn't want to play too much about finessing a perfect template, just something good enough to send out there.
I did end up sealing the deal with the Upwork client from yesterday. It was pretty fast. He signed up for a Zoom call for today and we talked about what kind of solution he was looking for which ended up being basic email flows, a great first contract with the potential for a lot more work! The work is roughly 10 hours of work for $400, so, not too bad of a trade, I low balled it for the potential of more work.

I'm not going to celebrate the small victory just yet. Until the work is finished and I get paid, I'll be holding off on the enthusiasm. I am happy that out of the dozen or so sales calls I've had, I've never failed to get them into a finalized contract. Feels good!

As for the contacts. I'm going to do a couple of things:
  1. I'm holding too high of a standard for work that can be easily done. I don't have to be passionate about every email flow opportunity that comes my way. With that said, when I find an obvious eCommerce store in need of email services or obvious improvements, I send the template, whereas before, I would just skip it altogether.
  2. With the template,(I do have to create a couple more for specific cases) I can easily churn out around 40 emails a day. Today, I only had an hour of time to pump them out and got 9.
Good day! We'll see how the contacts and client progress goes!

[Goal 2.0] Day 14 breakdown:
Total Contacts: 21/500 (Days Left: 16)
Pomodoro Count: 0 (I'll be starting work after this post)

First Month Breakdown (JAN 31 - MAR 5):
Work Stats

Total Pomodoro Count: 51 (36 Hours 40 Minutes)
Total Contacts Made: 21
  • Emails Sent: 14
    • Emails Read: 1
  • Upwork Proposals Sent: ~6
    • Proposals Replies: 3
    • Proposals Contract Closed: 1
    • Total Revenue: 0 (I won't count the $400 contract until I see it in my bank account)
  • Forum Replies: 1 (I count any questions I can easily answer on Shopify, eCommerce, and Klaviyo Forums)

It's a bit interesting that I can make 2x my original goal of making $1k with one client. I guess everyone saying that I'm lowballing my expectations was right.

My emails conversions are what I expected. I am in the middle of working with a client and making sure they're satisfied before anything else, so emails have stalled a bit. I've got to learn how to squeeze in emails first thing in the morning versus doing them later.

My best platform for clients has been Upwork. I understand that working with their platform sacrifice the control of my funds. For the time being, I'll use the platform to easily confirm my own services and what clients find valuable.

Journal Stats
Total Journal Entries: 21
Total Words Written: 7900
3 Most Common Words Used In Entries: Work(67), all(58), just(55)

I felt this was interesting to note. I've definitely been writing more about justifying work and relating it to my current goals. Also, I've always felt that "just" was a wimpy procrastinator's word. And well, I used it a lot this month.

Lessons Learned:
  • Sleep should be sacred.
    • I've recently taken up tracking my sleep. If I wasn't getting enough deep sleep, I would chalk up my brain to being less motivated. I would ultimately pump out subpar work and feel bad in the same process. You get more sleep, you get more and better work done. Also, stick to a strict schedule. Don't be like me and dance around a schedule as if being impulsive is at all efficient.
  • Don't make a mountain out of a molehill.
    • I won't lie, my own perspective of my own value and what I could provide in terms of service sucks.

Unfortunately, it's all too common. The moment I started getting in contact with clients, I realized very quickly that I knew enough, I had quick solutions to their problems and in the end, if they were satisfied, I was satisfied. I can't express how many moments of self-doubt I had for logical reasons. That's the uphill battle of starting a business -- at least for me-- convincing yourself that you can do it.
  • Have a bare minimum commitment.
    • No matter what, some days are going to suck. There won't be any identifiable reason either. But, you've got to do it anyways. There was a quote I read recently from Steven Pressfield on fighting against our own calling, "The best pages I've ever written are pages I can't remember writing.". It's almost comedic how imaginative our brains can narrate our own struggle. Sometimes, you can only allow one thing in your brain during these times, do the work!
Overall Thoughts
I'm not doing enough. Pumping out 40 hours of solid work for an entire month is bad. Although these pomodoros are distraction-less and aren't involving valueless tasks like answering emails, the conclusion is still the same: the more hours I commit, the faster this business will grow. If I want to be achieving the goals I've originally set(1k, 2k, 5k per month) and getting my business to a profitable point where I can branch off into Dropshipping again, I've got to sit down and do the work.

My biggest issue is getting in my own head. Once the physical and mental fatigue starts settling in and when I've stared at a blank screen for so long, I end up justifying a way out of the work. I'm thinking way too much about how I personally feel.

Of course, it's important to consider your well-being. I'm not going to play into the toxic hustle culture where you must grind away at your soul to achieve anything of worth. But, in order to achieve something exceptional, you've got to do something exceptional. Sitting in front of a screen and churning out work; confronting the same persistent feeling of frustration and rising above the occasion, day in and day out, is exceptional to me and that's what it takes. There doesn't have to be anything else to be said.

So, let's keep hunkering down and getting what needs to get done.

Good luck man! I'm following you.

Recently I also started an email marketing agency for e-commerce businesses. Still working on getting the first customer though.
Thanks, man! I appreciate the follow. Getting the first customer is always rough. I wish you luck in getting your first customer. Could be right around the corner.

I believe @Champion is doing this already, may want to check out his progress thread. If you need any help feel free to post your progress thread on the Facebook group (check the side of the forum), and I can provide feedback in more detail there.

What you need to develop first is a reliable process for getting customers. Once you have that, you've got the bedrock of a successful agency in place. It must be a repeatable process, where you know that if you do XYZ, you can get a customer. Not a random process.

You're right. The idea for posting Pomodoros came from @Champion posts. It's been a huge help!

I posted on the forum. I tried my best to fit the general format of the forum. Let me know if I need to change anything.

@Black_Dragon43 I won't lie, it is naive of me not to consider the customer getting process to be the bedrock of the agency. I appreciate the feedback. I'll spend a lot more consideration about that system before anything else.

Interesting thread! I like the idea of a portfolio shop - How will you show the emails to the potential clients?

As for getting clients, I found that highly personalised cold emails still work well. Shopify store owners get an awful lot of unsolicited emails, but if you stand out by showing you actually looked at their shop and didn’t send the same email to hundreds of people, you stand a better chance of getting their attention.

In your case, you could make a list of shops, sign up to their newsletter and start the check-out process (thereby triggering any abandoned cart emails). You could then take notes of what emails you get and when in a spreadsheet, and if there is anything you could improve on, tell them in your cold email.

I also like this site for inspiration: Really good emails.

Good luck!

I completely agree with personalized email being better. Do you have any rules of thumb or templates that you follow? I usually pull at least two unique points from their website and give my brief thoughts on them. That's as far as my thinking goes. Could also use some tips!

Great advice, man. I'll keep a Google Sheet with the info and post it here to see what the #'s say. I appreciate the help!

Funnily enough, I've been using that website to hand copy the classics. The Billion Dollar Letter and Dollar Bill letter are must-reads.

P.S. I attached a dinky gif shuffling through the stack of notes I accumulated on that website lol

  • Setup [x2]
    • I purchased the domain, started the Shopify store, and started slogging away at the website.
I got lazy. I wrote off the day being curious if I would follow through with the post despite not doing as much work as I should have. And, well, yeah, I feel embarrassed posting this. I've got to step it up if I want to get to $1k for the first month.

Did you check out the “Just Start Already” or “Inbound/Sales” links in my signature?

I actually had to consider this response, overnight.

My justification for starting the website was, what I thought, customer-driven, but after thinking about it, it's motivated for my own convenience and familiarity.

Once I start speaking to customers, for all I know, they could tell me what kind of case studies they want. That could throw this "specific" website I have in mind into the trash.

1) You are absolutely right about this. It's hopeless to spend a conversation trying to convince someone what Klaviyo is. Instead, I'd rather have someone know what it is but wants someone else to do it.

I understand your point. And that Mother Teresa quote in your signature helps illustrate that.

When I considered what domino I'd want to tackle, what I could do now, I considered what gave me the most emotional response.

The idea of talking to customers and attempting at selling myself, well, makes me want to puke. I understand that's the answer in itself and that's what I've got to do.

So, with that said, the defined goal would be: Get X calls scheduled. It's getting late into the week. I'll shoot for getting at least one.

4) This is where I've stumbled the most. I haven't made any attempt at trying to network or anything. I've been taking active steps to get myself out there. (This goal is intrinsically motivated by wanting to move to Manhattan to work on my network and why I started posting here.)

I have and it's fantastic advice. It's a lot to chew on. I've got them printed out so that I can reread them to fully understand the points. Thank you for the post and recommendations! It means a lot.

I did a podcast about “Sales For Techies”. It’s somewhere in the “Let’s Chat Sales” thread:

Another way to find shopify stores is via builtwith, in case you hadn't seen that one yet.

You could also join shopify groups on facebook. Groups will probably not allow self-promotion, but many people there will have their business in their profile, so you can find their store that way and then contact them outside facebook if you feel you could help them. It's also a good way to see what pain points around email marketing people have.
That's a great idea! Much appreciated.

  • Planning [x2]
    • I'm focusing on the lowest-hanging fruit for clients. What I can tell is that people are making beginner mistakes, but not enough to justify an entire service. Who knows, as long as it gets fixed, that'll be good enough? Had to do some brainstorming about the tools I'd use to set up meetings and analytics for emails.
  • Prospect List [x3]
    • I'm starting to get into the flow of how I'm finding prospects. It's getting easier. Just slugging away building the list.

To give you some more food for thought: I'm currently reading Alex Hormozi's book "$100M Offers" and I think it might give you some inspiration for what to actually offer and how to set your offer apart.
