Hi Fast Lane Forumers,

My uncle has a popular restaurant in Roswell, GA that I'm developing his website for. His old website is outdated and it needs a revamp. However, I haven't gotten pricing or services down since the whole industry is so difficult for me to gauge.

He told me that he'll let me develop his website if I treat him like any other client (which I don't have!) and charge me what I would charge them. In the past, I've always undervalued myself and said $500 but I've found out that I'd be putting too much work in for not enough compensation, get frustrated and give up on the whole thing.

So, how it goes is get the business and then build the website - however, I've already almost completed the new website and I'm wondering how much I should charge for it.

His current website is: VUU Bistro & Sushi Bar - Asian Fusion Restaurant in Roswell, GA

So this is just for the web development part... No SEO, OpenTable and Shopping Cart. If you were a restaurant owner and saw this website, how much would you be willing to pay for it?

I've been there before. People will pay for value. The higher the price the higher the value seems. Overpricing is relative. It is essentially a case of paying for something that holds little or no value whether it be $1 or $100+. Before you continue you'll have to either find out how important he believes the website is to the success of his business, or convince him that it is. From there pricing itself will seem irrelevant. Remember think value and not money.

So in terms of value - if you were a restaurant owner, how much value would a website like this bring to your business? Let's say you believe the website to be important to the success of your business, how much would you pay to get this website for your business?

Tbh not much. A website for a restaurant is not much more than another marketing platform. A lot of restauranteers already use Facebook and Google for this kind of marketing. A website at this point doesn't add value, unless it can directly compete with the credibility and exceptionality of Facebook and/or Google.

Let's say you believe the website to be important to the success of your business, how much would you pay to get this website for your business?
Everyone's pricing scheme and idea of how much a product should cost is different. I can't make that decision for you. You'll have to be confident enough to set a price and stick to it. My advice- charge based on the value you know you're giving. If it's too much your customers will let you know. Better to reduce an initially high price after customer request. They'll surely be back if you do.

I don't know how much its worth but the fonts you used makes the website look old fashioned and dated (as well). It looks very similar to the original website... The only difference to me seems to be the icons are sliding on to the screen, instead of just sitting there.

Is this a fast food restaurant? The website gives me the impression that it is... A more higher end restaurant would have a website that looks more trendy and modern.

EDIT: I see the prices on the menu, and its def a higher end restaurant. This website does not reflect that to me.

Maybe @Fox could help you for the pricing (curious about his thoughts).

It's not the website alone that will push the restaurant's value high. BUT, it does have its value by itself - it's a big part of the branding.

Story time:
I only ever had one customer for website building (mainly because I was scared of working on the side and not having a "real job"). Charged $4500 for a house construction company. Now that I think about it, I should've charged $10K+ simply because they generate $1M+ yearly and keep getting awards. It was just a custom WordPress theme... but still. At first, I wanted to charge ~$1000, because I felt like it was stealing from them. Don't forget the website WILL bring them money since it's beautiful. Considering it's your family and what he told you, I'd charge ~$3-5K. That's just my opinion.

Your uncle could setup his Google Business account, so when people google for a restaurant, all the contact information, hours, menu, show up on Google right away. He could make a simple FB Page and add the same information there, along with a link to his brand new website.

What's really important in the website is having pictures of the meal or shots of the ambiance in the restaurant. If I can feel the mood and/or taste the food while looking at the website, I'll probably go to that restaurant. That's a great template (Fresh Bistro). Is it on Joomla or WP ?

Check this one out: Home What do you see first ? I'm drooling over that steak. I would make that picture bigger if I could.

Very important. As someone who eats out 365 days a year, and has a hobby of trying tons of restaurants and new restaurants I rely heavily on Yelp for the reviews and pictures patrons have posted of the actual food being served. Most Yelp reviews link to the actual website which has pics of all the menu items.

Yelp food pics mainly show you the popular dishes (You know which are most popular, because thats the pic that most people are posting), so make sure you get good pics of the best selling food items.
Also the best selling (and prettiest) cocktails.

If I find a restaurant on there that doesn't have pics or appetizing pics of the food I will not go to that restaurant at all- even if it has good reviews. I am a foodie, I'm all about the food porn.

I would say upsell him on curating the instagram page (or the first 20 pics or something like that) for his restaurant or include it for "free" and build it into the pricing for the website.

Here is a sushi place in Chicago that has bomb pics for their restaurant:

Without reading any comments... I think his old website is fine. You say it is outdated, but honestly, I think it's fine for a local restaurant. What is the main reason he wants a new website.

Does he just want reservations and online ordering added onto his old site?

I'd say the website design is worth about $1000. Then add extra for the integration of open table and online ordering.

Now that I've read the comments, I agree with many of them. I didn't even look at the content, but I agree that your version doesn't look high end. It actually looks like a template for a different type of business. The only reason I go to restaurant websites are to see the menu, make reservations or to find their phone number. Most restaurants will use open table and have a link to yelp, uber eats, door dash, etc...

I think what would be great is a menu that explains all the dishes because when ordering on Uber eats, most restaurants will have a dish that says "house fried rice" with no explanation. I'll go to the website to see what's actually in the dish before I order.

There's a new burger place where fries are included with every burger. Problem is that it doesn't mention that at all on their uber eats. The uber eats menu just has burgers and drinks. You can't even order fries from there. WTF? I didn't order from them for months because of this.

So it is good that you started but I don't think this website is worth too much as is.

Again - it's great that you did this, and it could be an important step towards something big, but this website (in of itself) is not too valuable. A few reasons...

- The website quality/flow is not great. Some sections just seem off, bad choice of picks, some links are super slow or don't work etc.
It is your first website project but the users won't know that. So at this stage its good that you did this but the real market value is low.

You will get better at this over time but there is a lot of room for improvement here. A better structure with a cleaner, simple layout would go along way. I don't think this should be more than a 1-page website.

- The added value seems minimal. There was already an okay website, there are online solutions like Yelp that can list what you listed, and the niche itself is semi low margins (how many sales will a new website bring in?)

I think even a great website, done perfectly, would only be worth $2-3k for a restaurant. And even then. So it would be a very hard type of site for someone just starting to add a lot of value in. If it was a niche where the average sale was 5-10k plus you would have a lot more potential to add value.

---

So overall this is an important first step and you did well for a first real project. But on the open market, a site like this isn't worth too much. It could be done by a lot of people for less than $1,000.

Don't let that get you down though. With a bit better design, more practice, and a better niche you could quickly be bumping your value way up. The important thing here is you took some action and actually finished your first real project.

+ rep for taking action and sharing.

I agree that the font needs to be changed. It just doesn't fit well. Id try something like Montserrat.
