Happy Saturday all - I own a personal care business (an assisted living business) in PA (USA) with 215 beds and 95 employees. Great business and massive potential going forward (US is underserved by over 1MM beds nationwide FYI). I purchased it in Aug of last year and have grown from 145 residents to 165 residents. The business was pretty beat up from COVID, but are getting some decent traction now. Growth has been ok, but certainly not as quick as I was hoping. As you can imagine there are tons of business systems that need improving. My strategy has been to work from the inside out as opposed to outside in (Making sure the residents are being well cared for ie: ensuring there are adequate staff/resources/systems etc instead of focusing on sales/marketing/advertising/lead generation/conversion etc).

I'm now in a place where I'm ready to dive into focusing on the external systems/processes. My main question is do you all have any thoughts/tips/resources/book recommendations on how to use/leverage AI in those processes? I have read good threads on here talking about the power of AI, but I’m not sure where to start…. Are there good books for me to read about how to implement AI into these processes for me?

Any thoughts/feedback/recommendations welcome. Thanks!!

Wow! It's great to hear about your assisted living business growth. In Australia, aged care is federally regulated, and standards were recently raised after a Royal Commission due to Elder abuse concerns. While there are differences between aged care/elder care and assisted living, there's significant overlap in demographics and operational challenges.
Having managed aged care and hospital operations in Australia and Asia, here are my thoughts on leveraging AI in your business:

Scheduling and staffing: AI can optimise staff schedules based on resident needs, staff preferences, and historical trends.

Medication management: AI-powered systems can track medication schedules, dosages, and potential interactions.

Predictive Maintenance for Equipment: Implement AI to forecast when critical systems (like HVAC or medical equipment) will need repairs or replacements, minimising downtime.

Resource allocation: Predict and optimise resource usage (e.g., meals, supplies) based on historical data and resident preferences.

Financial forecasting: Implement AI models to predict revenue, expenses, and occupancy rates.

Compliance management: Use AI to track and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, automatically flagging potential issues.

AI-powered translation services: For multi-lingual staff or residents' families.

Sentiment analysis: Monitor resident and family satisfaction through AI analysis of feedback and communication.

Personalised training: Use AI to create customised training programs based on each staff member's role, experience, and performance.

I suggest: Start small with one area, such as scheduling, and gradually expand as you see benefits.

As for resources, I'd recommend "AI Superpowers" by Kai-Fu Lee. But I’ve found a lot of value in YouTube channels like AI Explained and newsletters like Rundown AI. AI is evolving fast, and I follow thought leaders like Awais Khan and experts at IBM to stay updated.

The reality is, AI is moving so quickly that those who don’t jump on the bandwagon now will be left behind. Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity have been game-changers for me, and I can’t imagine working without them. It's great that you're exploring this now—AI’s impact will only grow in the coming years!
