Hey all,
My partner runs an informational site as a non-profit organisation providing people with advise and information in a niche she is very passionate about.
It's also pretty region specific, us being in New Zealand, though some of the content could be applicable interntaionally.
At the moment, we're averaging about 400 visits (31k unique visists / 41k total visits from 01 Jan 2010 - 17 Apr 2010 from AWT Stats) per day, so we're starting to look at how to get some revenue out of it. Being that it's for a non-profit org, we're not looking at how to make big money from it, but we would like to be able to cover costs of both hosting, and our time to update the site, etc.
We've put some AdWords on the site, though the placement is not the best (trying to not make it "look" like an ads site). We're currently reworking the layout so I'm thinking now is the time to look at what we can do about it.
The site is NZ Child Restraints, if viewing it helps - though as mentioned, the current layout is being changed soon. We're the #1 ranked site on Google NZ for the search term "Child restraints", "child seat", "car seat", and a few other relevant terms.
We've had the AdWords up for about a year now actually, with approx 220,000 page impressions but only 450 clicks, a CTR of 0.2%.
I'd really appreciate any input on ideas of how we can better handle this, and things we're thinking about at the moment are:
* Affiliate marketing, and have click-through links from product reviews to partner stores. E.g. a review for a specific model seat will have a Buy Me link that takes you to online ordering at a partner suppliers site, and we will get a % of the sale.
* Fixed-term banner ad sales, i.e. have advertising banner(s) and charge companies a fixed amount to have their banner displayed for a specified duration.
* Better position and/or increase number of AdWords - though we feel we have less control over the look & Flow of the site doing this.
* Once there is some form of income from the site, I can start actually invoicing the organisation for my time, as my input is typically technical, and I am tax-registered as an IT consulstancy.
Again, the goal of the site is to make safety information freely available, but last year for exampe we had a combined 480 hours between the two of us doing work for and around the site & the non-profit organisation it represents. For reference, we're currently the only two involved in the NPO, so no we can't go to someone higher up and ask for payment
