I have my old Ferrari Wheels on sale on craigslist so of course there are going to be scammers out there. I thought I'd post this one I got today.

I actually emailed once with this buyer a few days ago. I could tell he was a scammer immediately because he's an idiot.

First he said that he had to work and couldn't come see them. Which would imply that he lived nearby. Then he said he needed them shipped someone where.

Second, my price includes free shipping, but he insists on paying for it. What a nice guy!

If you look at the emails below, the names keep changing as do the address locations. I also never get an actual address to ship the wheels to.

EMAIL 1
First I get this email that is supposedly from Paypal showing that I received a payment for $2930.00.
=======================

service@paypal.com pp.customercaredest@consultant.com to kenric

PayPal

Dear Kenric,

You have an Instant Payment of $2,930.00USD from fordjohn
(fordjohn109@gmail.com).

Payment Details

Purchased From:Rebecca Letso

Transaction ID:8S380593UR606674N

Item # Item Title Quantity Price Subtotal
Not Available Asanti Wheels and Tires for Ferrari 360 or 430 - $1955 (Shea and Hayden in Scottsdale) 1 $2,030.00USD $2,030.00USD

Shipping & Handling via Worldwide Delivery
(includes any seller handling fees) $900.00USD
Shipping Insurance (not offered): --
Sales Tax : $00.00 USD
Total: 2,930.00USD

Additional note:
I have made the payment, so I have forwarded your details to the
Shipping Company who will pick up the item, please send the pick up
cost to them as we discussed and arrange with them the pick up date
and time. I got an email from my agent, He said he won't come and pick it up unless i pay him the agent commission fee first in order to be able to schedule a pick up time. So i have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees, i will include the $900.00usd they charged to pick them up (1st class Service) to the payments i will send through PayPal. After i have made the payments and it has been confirmed by PayPal. I will need you to help me send the $900.00usd to my pick up agent through Western Union Money Transfer.
Any time I see the word "details" in any buyer email, it immediately translates to "SCAM" -- delete!

Thanks for posting, hopefully this will save others from becoming a victim.

I always have them put NOT SPAM as a title and if it doesn't say that, I don't reply. I love, like you mentions, how the names will change. I see some where the email address as one name, the name assigned to the email is another, and the signature is a 3rd. Scams are pretty obviously most of the time.

If people would spend as much time as they did creating scams into something legit, they would probably do pretty well for themselves. Why would they use paypal? It takes 5 seconds to login and see the balance isn't there, too funny.. And the president of paypal I love it!

Nice one.

the real question now is, what wheels you got for it now?

I just got a text from this scammer (fordjohn109@gmail.com) wanting to buy a car I posted on craigslist with no pictures. He wanted to send the money through paypal and for me to remove my ad, and wanting my address immediately so that he could calculate shipping costs.

Everytime I get scam emails or texts i'm reminded of the Powerbook prank 😀

http://www.zug.com/pranks/powerbook/

I do a lot of business on craigslist. I consider myself an extremely savvy computer user. No one taught me any of the rules I abide by for my many successful craigslist purchases/sales. That said, following a strict set of guidelines on craigslist can enable you to find amazing deals/sales for items you want or want to get rid of.

My rules of thumb for craigslist are:

1. Never post your phone number on an ad, always require people to email you first.
2. Once you get emails, absolutely NO responses to any emails not containing a valid phone number that you can call/text to validate they are local and not a scam.
3. ALWAYS meet in a reasonably public nearby place during daylight hours (Do not meet at their house or yours, EVER, it's just safer that way). Bring a friend if you're not comfortable meeting a stranger alone.

On a side note, during my years on craigslist, I have seen every scam in the book. From the classic $2900 2012(or insert late model year here) LEXUS (in which the ENTIRE post is an image file with only a cryptic gmail address to respond to LOL) to the automated (yes, these ARE automated scripts doing these scam postings) scripts asking me if the "item" is still available in an email.

I'm not selling an "item", you're emailing me about my post on craigslist you DAMN WELL know what I'm selling! And will I ship to you cause you're buying my computer for your daughter while you're in business in Kenya and you're going to wire the money over to me plus a bonus of $400 to show good faith. NO.

I want to know how I've gone all of these years being raised on the internet and never seeing the P-P-P-Powerbook thing? That [started off as] the funniest thing I have EVER seen on the interwebz. But, what ever happened to the guy?

I did a little googling and found that he shortly came back to being active on something awful.
