Hi everyone,
I just finished MJ's Millionaire Fast Lane on audiobook. It was incredibly inspiring and spoke directly to the existential frustration that kept hitting me experiencing the post-college job life. I have worked in LA as a TV production freelancer for 10 years now. At first it was very exciting, working my up to roles with more responsibility and establishing myself with as many professional contacts as I could felt like great progress. For the last 5 years I had established myself at a very big studio, my boss at the time basically guaranteed I'd always have a place there.
As it turns out that guarantee was predicated on convenience. Earlier this year I was told there are just not enough projects to justify keeping me on board. This was after I worked a 2-month job where I was averaging 16-hour days and had about 4 days off through the entire project. This year felt like my F*ck This Event, working that hard and beating myself up to help someone else achieve their vision, then promptly being booted. I want to create and grow something on my own that I can be proud of and that will leave me independent of and impervious to the whims of some uncaring corporation. I'm more than willing to put in those same 16-hour days knowing that I'm actually building my future.
Although I'm very inspired and excited I'm also a bit overwhelmed. I'm not sure even what type of business I want to start. I picked up a few books from MJ's great little known books list (Never Too Late to Start Up by Rob Kornblum ; Generating Product Ideas by Artiom Dashinsky ; See, Solve, Scale by Danny Warshsay) to keep up the learning and inspiration, and I'm hoping I'll be able to narrow down an idea and plan of action as I read. I'll continue to post updates to keep myself accountable, any and all resource suggestions are always appreciated. Thanks all, happy to be here!
