Maybe you have already heard of this challenge - the 75 hard challenge by Andy Frisella who runs The MFCEO podcast (I think the top business podcast for over two years).

Basically, the rules are:

1) Strict Diet – No cheating, not even 1 bite, and No alcohol

2) Two Workouts* per Day – 1 has to be outside and both have to be at least 45 minutes

(*this can mean jogging, swimming, yoga - doesn't have to be gym)

3) Drink 1 Gallon of Water per Day – Nothing but clear, plain water counts

4) Read 10 Pager per Day – From a non-fiction self-help book or business book

5) Take a Progress Picture Every Day – So you can see the progress at the end

For 75 days with no days off.

While it might seem like a fitness challenge - it isn't. It is a discipline challenge.

Andy explains it fully here:

Let me say - it is harder than it looks. To do one day - easy. To not miss any days - very very hard.

First time I failed was cause I had a sugary drink on a date. I let a girl buy me a sugary Starbucks smoothie and wasn't being aware.

The second time (two days ago) I didn't do any reading cause I didn't have my day planned out 100%. I got sloppy with my time.

Is this challenge needed for you to be successful? Of course not.

But is it a great way to build some great habits, awareness, dedication, and discipline for those struggling with those things? 100%.

So if you feel like jumping in with me on this challenge post up.

Some additional rules:

- Don't modify any part of the challenge. This isn't a "well I did it this way" challenge. The rules are above and those are the rules.

- If you break ANY rules you go back to the start.

- Be true to yourself. The only person who gets anything out of this is YOU if you do it right. Pretending you did this won't help and will most likely hurt.

- No audiobooks ha. I still listen to them as I walk every day but Andy is clear that the 10 pages a day are to be read by you.

That is it:

Here are my past stats but I will consider today day one since I have to restart...

62528590_905044869839800_7709705358494662656_n.jpg

62507184_303674747177518_4274222543830777856_n.jpg

(started on the 23rd of May and failed twice since)

So who is in with me?
(or has already started)

-----------

June 2020 update:

- I completed the challenge at the end of 2019 just before New Years.
- Hands down the best thing I ever did for myself mentally and physically
- The biz gains were also massive and still building up from the progress I made

- I have dropped off the last few weeks from corona/other stuff so I am not back on it again!

Video here if you want to follow along and post up here too:

I am restarting on page 22 of this thread if you want to follow along/post up there.

Andy is the man, and the 75 HARD challenge is surprisingly difficult. I'm also back to day 1 due to a missed workout (old man knee syndrome).

Have to be creative in regards to working out now but no excuses.

I'm IN.

2) Two Workouts per Day – 1 has to be outside and both have to be at least 45 minutes

Are there any additional rules or explanations regarding the workouts? I know it is a discipline challenge and not a fitness challenge, but working out for at least 1.5 hours a day for 75 days straight sounds like a great way to get way behind the 8 ball in terms of recovery.

Heard the challenge on his podcast, didn't like it because of 1 gallon of water a day. Being a really small dude I don't see myself being able to drink that, and water is the only thing I drink.

Ill breakdown my approach with this to show what I have learned so far.

This is just my way...

- I walk for an hour right after I wake up (around 5:30am). There is an amazing wood near my house here in Poland and I just get going and listen to an audiobook (audiobooks don't count for the challenge though!).

While walking a get through 1.5 liters of water.

So home before 7am with the first exercise session done and 1/3 my water drunk.

- I then do my work from 7am to around 1/1:30.

- I then hit the gym and get a good hour session in. Also I drink another 1/5 liters (I am on that euro metric system ha). And I get my progress pic in the gym.

So by around 3pm I got my work done, two sessions in, 2/3s water drunk, progress pic taken.

That only leaves 1/3 of the water left which I get through over the rest of the day and I read an hour before bed.

The main risk to my method is forgetting the last 1/3 of the water. There have been nights where I am downing water before bed while reading ha. So I might try to move those forward a bit.

I think this time around I will also have a diary to keep me on track. The main lesson I am learning so far are planning and time management (along with of course discipline).

Ya it is a lot. But if you hit the gym and outdoors hard it helps a lot.

Just get it in early or you will be waking up all night ha.

In the podcast linked in the OP he goes into some detail and says that the workouts can be running, weightlifting, even walking or yoga, as long as one of them is done outside. At my age, doing two intense workouts per day would definitely land me on the injured list, so I would suggest no more than one strenuous workout each day (maybe only 3-4 times per week), and the rest of them would be much less intense workouts, such as walking or yoga (I hope mowing the lawn counts!). Those less-intense workouts can also serve as a way for you to actively recover from your intense workouts.

Let's do this! Diet and drinking all that water will be the hardest things for me, as I already workout regularly and read self-improvement/business/entrepreneurship books, and a simple notification on my phone will remind me to take the pic.

As far as diet, I do really well until I get home from work in the evening, when I'm faced with a fridge and pantry full of food and more often than not I find myself grabbing anything. Food is one of my major weaknesses, so when I complete this challenge, I'll know I'm on my way to conquering it.

Drinking all that water will also be hard. I probably drink about half that amount in a day, so doubling it will be quite a change. Of course, making all of those additional bathroom trips will have the benefit of making me stand up and walk away from my desk and take a little break. I've only drunk about a quart so far today, and I don't want to be up all night, so I'm going to start the challenge tomorrow.

Who else is in?

True, I edit the main post to add this in.

Two gym sessions a day is way too much for nearly everyone.

Welcome abroad!

Drink a lot during the fitness sessions - it helps a lot to reach the numbers.

Also throw out all the bad food if possible- win that battle before it even starts. If it is there it will get eaten at some point.

My current routine as of yesterday

30 days of a dopamine reset

No entertainment such as movies/tv/music

No porn - no sex

No sugar or carbs

Go to bed at 8pm and wake up at 5am

Eat only during a 4 hour window during the day

Cut out stimulating activities so no riding my motorcycle

Stretch and meditate 3x a day

No hanging out with friends

Its a strange thing to cut out all the stuff you turn to when you need a boost. It makes you confront everything in your life because there's nothing else to do.

I have attempted the challenge twice and failed both times. 14 days and 7 days. I'm really embarrassed even writing this but it has to be done. While I struggled with working out twice a day due to me also working 12 hour days on my business doing physical work it was ultimately alcohol that knocked me off the challenge both times. The majority of my social circle revolves around pubs/clubbing and I do some bar-tending work at night even while not drinking as I just enjoy being around the scene. Even going out after work on a date or just to meet a friend I like to loosen up over a drink.

Anyone got any tips on how they overcame this specific challenge in their life? I'm going to restart 75HARD and complete it but I know that I got to change up my approach to dating/partying if its going to work.

If anyone (including Fox) wants to introduce accountability I'd be happy to text on Whatsapp every night a simple 'Done Day X' until we end the challenge/move onto #LifeHARD

My routine is already similar to this, although I drink red wine here and there.

As far as the twice-a-day workout goes, for nearly two years now, every day I walk 3 miles, do an upper body workout in the morning and a lower body workout in the evening.

Throughout the day I probably drink at least a gallon of water, although I add electrolytes to my water.

I read more than 10 pages a day easy (often from more than one book).

I have a very strict vegetable/chicken-heavy diet and only eat at around 5 pm. Although I blend vegetables, fruits and seeds for breakfast and sometimes lunch.

The only thing I don't do is take progress pictures.

As I've said, I have been keeping this up for well over a year, and what helped me was when I tried to keep this up in the past and failed by eating a cheeseburger from McDonalds or wherever and skipped out on working out for a few days. I felt so indescribably awful it was though the strict diet and routine was a heavenly feeling. And after the first month or two you won't want to turn back; you feel and look better every day.

Wow crazy to see this posted after having embarked on the same journey last week.

I am currently finishing up day 8 of the challenge.

Some thoughts so far:
  • Drinking a gallon of water a day is much harder than it sounds. It's best to break it down into more achievable steps. I personally counted the amount of ounces in a gallon (128oz) and divided this by 12, which means that you have to drink just under eleven 12 oz glasses of water per day. Seems much more doable that way.
  • I learned that I don't like taking mirror selfies, but obviously do it anyway.
  • I'm on the carnivore diet which is extremely restrictive but I've been following it for a while so the only thing I'm really eliminating are the bi-weekly cheat meals. The hardest part is finding the time to cook all my meals.
  • Since I'm in a time crunch most days, I just walk to and from the gym (where I complete my other 45 min workout) to get the 45 mins of outdoors exercise completed. This is also where I do my deepest thinking which is also a plus.
  • Reading 10 pages is easy, but I like how it's included in the challenge because it keeps me consistent with it.
I've come close to slipping up a few times but so far so good.

I definitely plan to complete the 75 days and look forward to hear how others are getting along.

Okay, I am back to day one because I never got the maths right on what a gallon actually is.

"The US gallon is used in the United States and is equal to exactly 231 cubic inches or 3.785411784 liters."

I have been drinking 3 x 1.5 litres which puts me under.
So failed (#3) from a lack of preparation and awareness on my behalf.

I am not going to half-a$$ this challenge and believe it is a "get out what you put in" type deal.
No excuses.

This time I am going to be using a diary...

^ Very respectable not giving yourself a pass on the measurement error, Fox. Props to your commitment.

I'm going to jump on this with you guys. I've got a barbecue planned in a couple days and already told the new neighbors we'd be drinking some beers together (they were waiting for me to finish up with an 1-week drinking break I was on). So going to get that out of the way and then jump on this challenge.

Also need to line up a camera for this because I got rid of my cellphone months ago and had no immediate plan to get a new one.

Anyhow, I'd been thinking of doing something similar on my own just to get in hyperfocus mode on my business - might as well do it with the group.

What diet restrictions are you guys doing, just out of curiosity?

Today (1:22 am here) I will be going to day 25 phase 1. I’ve been going hard since day one.

My hardest challenge with this program was the water, I didn’t really drink water at all before it. I used to read around 100 pages a day, workout & around day 40 in the 75hard I added cold showers to my program list. I’ve also messaged Andy & commented about the benefits of the cold showers that I’m tending to think that I had to do with him adding cold showers to the phase 1.

The cold showers were probably that have added the most intensity and grit to this program for me but I absolutely love it.

The first few days of the program it was -20 c (Canada) and the warmer it got the more I wished for it to get cold again so I could have more hardship.

The program has helped my mental state a lot, I had a lot of setbacks and shit happen throughout it & the program has certainly kept me going and forced me to do stuff even when I felt like shit.

^ Did he change up the parameters to add cold showers? Anything else added?

I love cold showers and other kinds of cold exposure, but I live in the Philippines and can't get it coming out of the tap even close to cold enough to make it a challenge. Suppose I could stick a bottle of cold water in the freezer when I wake up and pour it over my head when it's cold enough. Not exactly as beneficial as a shower though...

As an aside, anyone have additional recommendations on must-listen Frisella episodes?

My favourite one was the "powerlist" episode. It's a very good way to figure out what you need to be doing every day to reach the goals you want to reach.

I think of it as a lifestyle version of 75 hard. Kinda like if you want to read loads of books, you need to read a little each a day.

Tbh I don't think 75 hard is particularly useful or productive - its a bit of a christian "virtue through sacrifice" approach.

How did everyone do yesterday?

By my calculations, 1.5 x 3 = 4.5 liters, which puts you over by about .71 liters, not under. As long as you've been doing the other things, you shouldn't have to start over.

Are ppl doing this on Insta? I’m gonna go listen to the podcast and workout so I can get all the details.

I’m always seeing physical progress over the last two weeks.

Mine is much the same - no sweets or junk food, fast food only if it's a healthy option (grilled chicken sandwich, no fries or soda).

The other thing for me is portion control. I allow myself things like a burger or a (small to medium) slice of pizza once in a while, but make sure I only eat one portion per meal, then fill up on healthy choices like fruit and veggies.

I'm also doing intermittent fasting, only eating in an eight hour window during the day, so lunch (about 11:30) is my first meal of the day, and I make sure I don't eat anything after 7:30.

My diet is hard cheeses, eggs, and salted meat/poultry/fish only. Nothing else. I eat roughly 2-3 lbs of meat per day.

No bread, no grains, no sugar, no alcohol, no milk, no yogurt, no junk food. And yes, no fruit or veggies. Basically an extremely low carb carnivore diet.

Talk about hardcore man. The mental clarity on this diet is insane. I feel like a million bucks and my afternoon fatigue and digestive issues are completely gone.

No more carb cravings or counting calories. I eat when I’m hungry, which is no longer a nagging feeling like I had with carb cravings but just a feeling of an empty stomach. Real hunger.

Check out meat.health for anyone who has concerns about cholesterol intake or vitamin deficiencies on this diet, which are scientifically refuted on the site.

Andy Frisella is awesome. I first found out about his MFCEO podcast a few months ago, based on podcast recommendations here on this forum. I was skeptical at first, based on how he treated others on his show. But after hearing him speak, I immediately realized how great his points were and how I needed to not give a F*ck. I also realized how people take it as constructive criticism and use his blunt attitude to push themselves forward, which is exactly what it will do for you, and anybody who listens to it. He talks to his audience in the same way. It was a mental shift in perspective for me. He does it because he is passionate about the success of the people around him and giving people valuable feedback that might not get through to them otherwise. This podcast is exactly what i needed at this point in my life, and now i listen to him every day on my commute to work, along with my relevant audiobooks. If anyone reading this is skeptical about him, just listen through a few episodes before you make your final judgement. You'll understand what i'm saying.

I have also been working on 75HARD, and you'll never guess where i keep messing up. It's that damn gallon of water every day. Everything else is doable. I go long periods of my days without access to a restroom. I am working on a game plan right now to combat this, and I am overcoming any obstacles that stand in my way of accomplishing 75HARD. Just as Andy said, "it will teach you that sometimes the things that look easy, are actually some of the hardest things to do!". and, that comment was directed specifically toward the people who think that drinking a gallon of water every day is easy. He was right.

If i can do it without easy access to a restroom, you guys can do it much more easily. Don't give up.
