Many lessons that can be taken away from a TV show but felt the effects for one of them personally a while back...

The House of Cards scene I am talking about was when Frank Underwood helped his driver/bodyguard out (in season 1?) and then told the audience that he did it because "it was that it required so little of him to do something so big for his bodyguard" and therefore got 100% loyalty from him.

The Story
This happened a few months ago so my memory is blurry.. I live in a building where there is a concierge/porter service to hold your packages for you when they get delivered. There's a night shift porter who was extremely unfriendly to me and to be honest, quite ineffective at times.

Got a knock one late evening from him to go all the way down and buildings away to pick up my parcel... which I did later. I spoke to the porter and he told me he haven't had dinner yet at 11 pm and probably will starve his way through his midnight/early morning shift because he didn't bring money (or ran out of money... I wasn't sure about this)

Didn't have cash with me but I got back to my flat, got a couple bucks and went to him to offer to buy him dinner in a convenience store nearby. His dinner cost me less than £5 with drinks included. I did this because I don't think anyone should starve their way through their night shift and to be honest, it didn't cost me that much.

Fast forward about 2 months later... I went to collect my parcel at late night and had some issues with it. The man greets me with a BIG GIANT smile (first time in the past 2 years of living here) and was more than happy to help me with my issues. I just got upgraded to Porter Service Premium Plus!

The lesson to takeaway here is this can be applied not just to me and my porter or everyday working folk that you come across but your customers, your suppliers and your staff. I could have just as easily sat at home and turned on the TV instead of taking 5 minutes out to help this man out.

I am absolutely certain if you keep this in mind, you will see extraordinary results in your business relationships and a loyal following. As MJ says, "Think Big, Act Small".

What examples/policies that you have in your business that is to that effect?

Protesting is the lowest, and least effective form of attempted influence.

Sorry but I'm a little confused. However, I do sincerely apologise if my post has offended yourself or anyone in this forum. It was something that popped in and thought I'd share it with everyone.

Do you have a source for that? One of the most ignorant statements I've read on this forum.
Why, do you need a source to have an opinion? And are "sources" the Light of Truth?
That said, you say ignorant, but I read "this offends my beliefs".

How exactly was it stated? I couldn't tell.

It's stated as s a fact.

"Protesting is the lowest, and least effective form of attempted influence."

Hi guys! Looks like I stirred a pot.

Real influence takes power and power takes money and WORK. Just saying. What is going to come of all of the jobless fools rioting in furgeson? The answer is nothing productive.

Op, it was a comment related to the clip i posted not an attack on you.

It does offend my beliefs. An uninformed opinion is worthless and dangerous.

If something like that offends you, good luck.

Also, the very nature of an opinion is such that they are all uninformed.

That being said, I agree with Kak. Standing outside a building to yell and hold signs says a lot about how you value your time. I struggle to think of an instance in which some good came from a strategy that started with 'lets scream and shove our opinions down peoples throats, that'll get 'em to see our side.'

I agree. I've always view protests as a huge pity party. Instead of actually doing something about it, they just want to hate on others. I bet almost all protesters would balk if you handed them the exact solution to their problems. All they want to do is complain to support their "life is unfair" ego.

Don't you remember the epic change brought about by occupy wall street? Were you not completely moved by all of those dirty hippies sleeping in parks?

Changed my whole life.

Yep. I was suprised about some of the responses to my comment.

Protestors almost all have the victim mentality and an external locust of control. Pretty much the opposite of a serious entrepreneur.

Do you have a source for your shitty remark? I don't believe you came up with that all by yourself.

This is almost the topic up for debate in my Sociology class right now.

"Do you feel the protests/riots in Ferguson, Missouri are within our rights of being a U.S. citizen?"

It's not the topic I voted for, but I have to go with it now. Surprisingly -- it's not very heated.

This is easy. The protestors have a right to peaceful assembly. The business owners and residents in the area also have a right to put a bullet in the chest of a violent rioter threatening his/her life, liberty or property.

Wow! I just remembered something else related to protests. Peter Thiel (billionaire who recently published Zero to One) was trying to give a speech at UC Berkeley; but a bunch of protesters had to ruin that valuable opportunity by banging on the closed doors, breaking in, and scaring him away. There's a lot of them happening right now.

Protesters man...herp derp. Lol
