Anyone else noticing a reset in dopamine levels/feeling way more gratitude?

Not to sound cheesy but I catch myself really enjoying simple things and just feeling really good. Last night I was thinking how comfy my couch was for like 5 minutes haha.

I know there is a lot wrong right now but there is so much to be happy and grateful about also - we might be all stuck inside but we still live better than 99.99% of people who ever lived.

I think the last year before this I had been kinda rushing around and not really taking in a lot of stuff. Slowing down and having to focus on the day to day has been really helpful and enjoyable. I have been sleeping some of my best sleeps ever also.

I'd be interested to see if anyone else is feeling similar.

I am about 70% certain that Chloroquine is going to cure COVID19, and that this whole pandemic will be over in 3 weeks. I think our progress will only be limited by how fast we can get/make the drug. If so, we will have barely dodged a giant bullet.

A few of my friends and church members around the globe and I have been praying the hours. Last night I spent nearly two hours just thanking God for stuff.. little things.. big things.. past things.. future things.

Right before I went to bed I got an email saying that a stupid piece of paper which I’ve been waiting on for FIVE weeks had arrived at my local post office. Today, I got it in the mail.

I’m playing worship music around the clock and moving forward with stuff in amazing ways.. and it is Good. I’m definitely feeling grateful today.

Like @Fox said, gratitude has been coming easier for me too lately. Just this morning while walking the dog I stopped and closed my eyes and soaked in the sun, took a few deep breaths appreciating what lungs full of fresh air feel like, and listening to the birds.

And, according to my perceptions and my sleep tracker the last two nights have been some of the best sleep I ever had.

Isn't it interesting how the proposition of losing everything makes anything so much more enjoyable?

I hope I get the opportunity to remember these thoughts and feelings years from now when everything is "normal".

Each day is a blessing. Life is fleeting. If you and your loved ones are healthy and free you have so much to be thankful for.

If this is reliable this could be a gamechanger in terms of getting people tested.

Only question is does this potentially mess up the accuracy of the official numbers of infected/tested etc. ? Because if I'm not mistaken at this point I think all testing results have come directly from hospitals/labs

https://time.com/5805953/home-C0VlD-19-test-everlywell/

The problem with this test will be a false negative rate. To do the test correctly, you need to swab the back of the throat, like all the way past the dangly thing (uvula). Then you need to test the nasopharynx, imagine pushing a q-tip into your nose until you hit the very back.

how many people can do that? I can tell you in medical school doing it to other people was hard, I can’t imagine trying to swab yourself if you don’t have medical experience.

hence the concern for lots of false negatives from insufficient samples.

There's research already long since published for chloroquine / quinine as an antiviral against coronavirus and influenza. Chloroquine is the manufactured analog of quinine. It can have side effects, especially if dosed incorrectly. I always keep some in the house (as quinine). Tonic water is not a strong enough source for medical use, but you can buy quinine fairly easily in the US (order it off Amazon). People often use it to stop tremors.

I've used it against flu or other respiratory bugs... not recommending that you do the same, nor am I saying you shouldn't if you have a virus. You can talk to a doc about that, and/or read research with statistically significant and randomized sampling.

The research goes back years. You'll see a lot of 2020 papers, but you'll also find 2013, 2008, 2004, and as far back as 1990 or earlier on Scinapse. Older papers you have to use google-fu to get originals, sometimes you can buy from archives. Many of the studies are related, and it makes me a little sad that this fact isn't talked about... it's like we start all over every time there's a new occurrence of the same thing. I have to hope people in the labs are aware of the prior research though.

Chloroquine and coronavirus and other respiratory syndromes (search)

Chloroquine and influenza (search)

Quinine and influenza (search) (actually has some citations from the 20s and 30s, though you'd have to dig up the actual papers).
Here's a study from this month on the coronavirus and Chloroquine

The basics:

45 person sample size
Day 6:
* 100% cure rate when combined with Azithromycin
* 12.5% cure rate with no treatment (control group)

That's about as exciting a set of numbers I've ever seen on a study. The implications are huge, including a greatly reduced number of days where the virus can be transmitted.

What will be interesting is to see how this works on people in a high risk group.

Edit:

I think we need to be careful with these kinds of studies, though ... they are preliminary. Until a number of other studies are done, with much larger sample sizes, different populations, etc, we don't know if these results will translate to the rest of the population. There are tons of examples where stuff like this was super exciting in a few specific instances only to find out that there were caveats to it that blew the whole thing up, or greatly diminished real-world results.

Well guys, I just lost my job (restaurant cook). The company laid off probably 80% of the workforce. 5 stores closed down already. Luckily I have savings to fall back on and unemployment on the way.

If you're not taking this shit seriously yet you might want to think about it.

Saints coach Sean Payton tested positive, saw it announced on Rotoworld.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but while he drove me nuts and I wanted to strangle him numerous times, I found that someone playing Devil's Advocate made me think.

Nothing wrong with devils advocate.

But he played devils advocate numerous times with the same take. We all knew his position. But saying it over and over, and over again was not necessary. In any event, the thread ban is only for a week. And he's already found other CV19 threads to post in.

On aside for the markets...

Big question for the markets is what is priced-in, and what isn't.

At this point, I think the market has priced in closures and earnings declines. Now the big question the market is looking for clarity, is how long. I think it is priced for early April. If anything leads to indicate this will drag on, it will start moving down into the low 2000s. I think a big TEST will be tomorrow, Friday, as Friday's have been hell on the downside ... lot of fear to holding for a weekend where things can escalate.

This might be the big one. Concerning for sure.

We have a 20 trillion dollar economy and even if things are at a standstill for 2 months thats 16% of our economy roughly. A lot of our econony are these service based human contact businesses that are closing at a rapid rate. Even a lot of people around me are saying they just lost their jobs. And americans live paycheck to paycheck.

The human element is the dominant variable in any economy and when that stops this econony is gonna take a huge hit in the TRILLIONS.

Not to mention the fed wants to inject trillions into liquidity.

This whole virus debacle stinks, what a better way to crash the econony than to get everyone sick and attack the most important economic variable:humans.

BAD!

I posted last week that I believed we'd see double-digit contraction in GDP for Q2, something we haven't seen since the Great Depression. I believed Wall Street knew it, but none of the big firms wanted to be the one to say it first.

I was hoping to be wrong on this one, but it looks like BoA is the first to come out with a similar forecast...

If this shutdown last more than 60 days, I'm willing to bet that we see unemployment at 12% or greater, another number we haven't seen since the Great Depression.

I hope I'm wrong about that one as well...

If it lasts 60 days, I'm expecting 1929, if not A.D. 476. I'm normally an optimist, but production and trade are all that keeps a large percentage of humans alive. Modern cities can't exist at all without a robust economy.

I’ve been working in London for about a month or so. I’ve had the virus for 6-7 days now (not counting incubation). I’ve been lucky and the symptoms have been mild to the point where I have worked through them (I’m basically working on my own). I think a lot of people have it already in London. The media are emphasising a dry cough and fever but just because you don’t have those symptoms doesn’t mean you don’t have it.

I caught it off a friend who has been moderately ill. Not enough to be in hospital but suffered at home. His wife works in a local school (who’s staff pretty much all have had persistent coughs for weeks) and he has 2 children (in another school I believe). She was ill too.

We have been to and fro with ‘is it or isn’t it’ for days now but yesterday he discovered he had lost his sense of smell and taste (which is another documented side effect).

For the vast majority it will be a minor annoyance, no more. However obviously life and death for others.

I’m going to miss my eldest Son’s wedding on Saturday. That for me personally is the worst thing so far about this bloody virus.

Oh dear.

Ireland had its biggest increase in confirmed cases today at 191. This is expected to keep increasing exponentially.

I’ve just watched the national news and they say the nation is no longer waiting. The expected “surge” has started. Hospitals are reporting an increase in people presenting with more serious symptoms and they’re trickling through to intensive care units.

It will be another 7-10 days before we find out if the social distancing measures introduced 7 days ago have changed the trajectory. If not then more drastic social distancing will be needed. (It seems a lot of people are still not heeding them.)

The finishing statements this evening were that you do NOT want to end up in the intensive care unit, that the armaments to fight this virus are NOT in the hospital, but are in the community and how we implement the social distancing measures.

Italy’s death toll has overtaken China’s. Are we to follow China’s trajectory or Italy’s?

Things are going to change for the worse very very fast.

So I'm not sure the status of the N95, but I understand they have KN95 masks which are almost as good.

I don't have an introduction but it shouldn't be too hard to track them down.

The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of C0VlD-19, In countries where commercial departure options remain available, U.S. citizens who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period. U.S. citizens who live abroad should avoid all international travel.

That is official from the state department. Not surprising in the slightest, i’ve been saying this for probably 10 days. We have addressed that many times in our podcast.

next will be interstate travel restriction. Our state’s are like countries in Europe. It’s painfully obvious where we are going if you just watch Italy and Spain.

Be safe y’all.

Due to the situation, have been stuck (stuck?!) with my family for a while, and we had this family dinner, which was much greater than any steak in restaurant. Did some garden work and planting preparations. Never felt as accomplished as now. Seems like there is still a great connection between humans and earth and no technology could replace it.

Is it possible, that due to these virus, where people will realize the benefit of being with your family and community, while simultaneously being able to study/work online, could lead to electronic-stone age, where small communities will form, like a small tribes, less people driving around, more inside-community agriculture to produce vegetables and fruits, therefore much fulfilled life for everyone.

I almost forgot we still had stars in the sky.

Gentleman, our generation might be a witness of the radical change and an enlightenment of human civilization.

I went there yesterday because the one thing I didn't have enough of was cooking oil! All this food and no olive oil. I bought 2 spray olive oils (no regular bottles left) and a bag of cookies.

FYI - Ghee (clarified butter) is a great substitute for cooking oil. I can almost guarantee that nobody is hoarding this stuff. You'll find it in the ethnic food aisle (it's used heavily in Indian cuisine).

Bonus - your food will taste better AND be healthier than most oils if you switch to ghee.

I switched years ago and while other oils still have their place (deep frying, salad dressing, etc), I use ghee for 90% of normal everyday cooking purposes.

Coconut oil is similar but isn't nearly as flavor-neutral as ghee is.

I think and hope so.

Every time they extend the motorway out of Dublin to the commuter belt the traffic jams ease - until people further out start commuting into Dublin and the jams come back. Then they extend the motorway out a bit further and it repeats.

It's unsustainable, and means many are on the road 3 hours a day. For what? To do the work that my wife has now concluded she can easily do at home? She'll seriously begrudge her 30-60 min commutes if things go back the way they were.

I like this idea, I think it's the future anyway for individuals who are "aware", I already practice a form of this in that I only have friends who like nature/like to push themselves/etc.

Not sure if anyone has had this happen yet... But our governor (Pennsylvania) just ordered all "non life-sustaining" businesses to close. This includes:
  • Lots of manufacturing facilities
  • All residential/non-residential construction
  • Legal services, tax/accounting services, etc.
  • And much more
Going to be a lot of layoffs... Not sure if other states are doing this yet, but if they do we're going to have some problems.

Don't you think it's somewhat crazy that not everybody is like that? I mean, how could you possibly not "push hard", enjoy nature, go after big goals, while you only live once.
Hard to be humble among so many irrational people.
