Yep. I was walking past the supermarket the other day and my housemates (who only started preparing yesterday lol) were coming out telling me there's nothing there, nothing there!

I went in because there actually wasn't many more people than normal and the only thing missing was meat and toilet paper section. Everything else was full.

Limiting my time in this thread to maximum 1 hour per day from now. And not before bed lol.

I went there yesterday because the one thing I didn't have enough of was cooking oil! All this food and no olive oil. I bought 2 spray olive oils (no regular bottles left) and a bag of cookies.

Asked HR if I could use the company implemented “two weeks leave with 75% wages paid” act they put in place for employees who were sick or needed to care for children who are affected by the school closures. This was on Monday. I was called into my bosses office Tuesday afternoon to sit and chat with him about my concerns after HR copied him on the email. He was all for me taking time if I felt it was necessary, as he shares most of the same concerns and outlooks.

My co-workers? They all think it’s a funny joke.

My bosses boss (branch manager)? He doesn’t think it’s that serious and advised everyone to just wipe down whatever we can with Clorox wipes and be diligent about “social distancing”.

I have still yet to receive a definitive response on if I am allowed to take leave for self quarantine or not. They are dragging their feet and continue to implement more stringent policies throughout the day and week... as if that will satisfy my concerns.

By the end of today I will either directly tell them that I AM taking personal leave or will be handing in a resignation letter.

The amount of people who are literally just taking this in stride as if it’s absolutely nothing is astounding....

I tried to lay out the simple maths of the incubation period and the people who may be asymptomatic, and no one seems to get it.

SO FRUSTRATING!

Note- I could lie and say the school closure is affecting me and I need to take the leave to care for my son and help my wife, or hell I could say I fee sick, but I don’t want to lie. I feel like this should be taken as a serious concern for business like mine and the people who are exposed to “higher risk” situations than the rest.

For those wondering, I DO NOT WORK IN A CUBICLE.

I work in a warehouse with 30 other employees, some who use public transit to and from work every day. We all share computers, keyboards, utilities, carts, etc.

They have given the Executives and Account Managers the nod to work from home. A majority of others are to follow suit shortly once they test the load on the system to make sure it won’t crash from so many working remotely.

They have stopped all foot traffic into the building and into the Will Call and City Desk lobby to eliminate face to face interactions for them.

Now, all of their work has been deferred onto us in the shipping department and then to drivers to deliver. Therefore our work load has increased and will mandate longer hours, while everyone else’s have shortened and have received the most attention for sanitized and safe working conditions.

So the government is expecting this to last 18 months or more....

The US government is reportedly preparing for the coronavirus pandemic to last 18 months or longer and result in "significant shortages for government, private sector, and individual US consumers."

A 100-page US government plan was leaked to The New York Times, which today published an article summarizing the highlights.

"A federal government plan to combat the coronavirus warned policymakers last week that a pandemic 'will last 18 months or longer' and could include 'multiple waves,' resulting in widespread shortages that would strain consumers and the nation's health care system," the Times wrote.

The 18-month figure is in line with the best-case estimates of how long it will take to develop a vaccine and make it widely available. There could be millions of deaths in the US and UK alone during that time, but social distancing and other containment measures could limit the death toll, according to Imperial College London research that we wrote about yesterday.

The Times did not publish the full US government report. "Much of the plan is bureaucratic in nature, describing coordination among agencies and actions that in some cases have already been taken, like urging schools to close and large events to be canceled," the article said.

Well yea, the reason is that we're waiting on the vaccine. They already have it, and have given it to people but before you line up every single person in the world to give them a vaccine, you have to monitor them for 18 months to make sure it's 100% safe.

I'm seriously considering volunteering for testing.

Fair enough, but my issue is more with the communist regime that's the root cause of their poverty.

For sure! I was talking with a teenage relative the other day and they were wondering why someone would eat a bat. Communism is why!

Went to Natural Grocers to grab some extra food. They've moved the cart sanitizer near the carts (bout time...geniuses). Unfortunately, people entering the store did not use it. I watched multiple people grab carts with their bare hands and get to shopping.

Shelves were empty of a lot of foods. Sweet potatos, eggs, toilet paper etc. Cookies, crackers and a lot of canned goods remained and the store overall was stocked.

At checkout I noticed signs that they are hiring temporary workers to beef up their cleaning crew, so I guess there's a silver lining.

My cashier wore gloves at checkout. Unfortunately, she coughed, once over her shoulder and once into her glove. I assume I'm probably already infected. I had a very similar sickness experience to @Vigilante around the same time. Still, I sanitized every grocery item outside of my home before entering.

I saw two recent car accidents while out. Two old ladies crashed into a telephone pole head on. The other one involved two vehicles plowing into each other. I couldn't help but wonder if anxiety might cause people to drive more wrecklessly.

I had a really bad sinus infection about 6 weeks ago, but after suffering for a week, it was immediately knocked out by taking antibiotics and steroids. It would be great if that was COVID19 and I'm already immune now, lol. I wonder if there is a test to find out if you already had it.

I'm gonna start buying some vegetable seeds. Any recommendations on what produces calories and can grow under a lot of conditions?

I am just starting out this year and still learning myself. I grew them before in another state, but i was more familiar with the soil and seasons there.

Just wanted to drop a note on this.

One, Get off your computer , I've felt significantly better not logging on and following this thread and others.

2. Most of my factories are back to work, which ive heard from others too. This is good because it proves that after a 30 day shut down it is possible to restart the economy. I wish Trump would just pull the trigger on this.

3. This is not the end, this virus will get contained, supressed, and be done with. Don't keep reading doom and gloom stories, the 1 industry that is up more than anything else is the media. The media is making money off of this crisis hand and fist.

4. While this can get bad and I understand exponential growth and the issues we're facing. We're acting like nuclear bombs are going off when only ~10k have died so far. Yes its tragic, but 10k die everyday from other reasons. Put this into perspective and look at the media loop and you can see this is bad but has been massively blown out of proportion.

Ive been following this virus since January. Its not new, but to the media it is NEWS.

Thank you.

If only people realized the amount of money the media is raking in with these headlines. What fascinates me is that people are sort of shocked the virus is spreading.

Just got off of phone call re: planning. Up at Lake Tahoe they have acquired a whole office building and they are working to create negative pressure rooms as an expansion hospital. This is a positive sign we are trying to learn from China and Italy and get ahead of this. I saw someone else post they were building a temp outdoor hospital on their fairgrounds.

Obviously creating space is just one step, but good to know. I’m sure many many communities are doing the same. Still need ventilators and O2 setups, but moving in the right direction.

No, no available test yet. The test we have right now is a PCR test that looks for actual virus material. Once your body clears that through your immune system the test would show negative. In fact that’s how we know that someone has cleared the infection when their test turns negative.

As far as knowing if you already cleared the test you would need a serology test looking for the antibody your body has produced to attack the virus. This is how we tell for instance if someone is immune to chickenpox. We look to see if you have antibodies in your blood targeting the chicken pox virus.

I think steroids do something though. I had several clients who came back in early February from a trip to Israel. They ALL came back sick with .. something that gave them a dry cough. In fact the tour guides over there told them the flu season was really bad this year and offered doctors numbers at the beginning of their trip, just in case.

Anyhoo..several of them got that mix of antibiotic/steroid shots right away when they got back home and most of them told me it cleared up in 24-48 hours. The antibiotics wouldn’t have worked that fast it was bacterial anyway.

This is all anecdotal of course.. but...all the ppl on that trip are over 60. So it made me wonder.

@Bekit I asked my friend who farms extensively to write a post about seeds because she strongly disagreed about heirloom seeds for beginners stating that if they grow more than two kinds those types will cross pollinate with unintended consequences? Is farming a specialty of yours? I’m asking because I know NOTHING about farming and will be relying on my friends for that research.

To everyone else...

I think we should all be wearing some type of mask if we can’t get the “right” kind because at least with masks we’ll be slowing down the spread.. or am I not being logical with that thinking? Has anyone found a solid description of a fabric mask that will accomplish anything substantial? I have wool..

ETA: y’all already answered this mask question yesterday I just didn’t see it. My bad. A genuine MASSIVE coronavirus business idea/need.

I haven't gotten to read through all 74 pages as of yet, but has anyone left any remarks on what all of this will potentially mean for real estate?! Thanks! Or any threads that anyone can tag me to?

Obviously there is panic right now & given the expected mortality rate of this disease this panic is justified.
@Kyle T maybe just semantics, but "panic" is never justified. Panic means no thought given before taking action - a very dangerous combination. Yes, action is required. Yes, this is severe and worrisome. But please don't panic.

Just got off the phone with someone in Telluride. Apparently they have had a bunch of children under 4 show up to the ER with breathing problems that tested positive. They are now testing the entire town is what I was told.

here is an article I googled about it, maybe there is a better more local source.

https://www.westernslopenow.com/col...y-orders-shelter-in-place-to-combat-C0VlD-19/

EDIT: here is a link from telluride hospital.

I was a guest on the BiggerPockets Real Estate Podcast today, talking about the economy, how recent events might impact real estate (and investors) and what we should be doing to prepare for a shift in the investing landscape. We talked for about two hours about all this...

Episode will air tomorrow morning as the weekly podcast episode... I'll post a link when it's out...
Looking forward to it! I have read every single real estate post that YOU have ever made on this forum! Thanks.

I'm on the lookout to see if there will be a surge of unexplained car accidents. If that whole thing about people dropping in the street in China plays out here, then chances are, more of those people will be behind the wheel of a vehicle instead of just walking in the street.

My experience:
  • Hands-on experience in gardening over the years.
  • Deep-dive research into agriculture over the past year.
Here's my take.

Beginners have been using heirloom seeds for centuries. This is the first era in world history where we had the science and the technology to mess with what's in the seeds (and have seeds to plant at all if they're going to go sterile after one generation). There's a whole gamut of these things, from seedless grapes to varieties of corn that farmers have to buy from Monsanto in order to have something to plant.

Never before in the history of the world have people had to buy seeds EVERY YEAR. They just gathered them at the end of the season from the crop they planted.

Up until this year, I was happy to just buy whatever GMO seed packets were at the grocery store. Didn't really care.

But for right now, in this season, I'd feel more comfortable knowing that my seeds were going to be viable at the end of the season. I will be saving them. I will be planting them next year, grateful for the "normal" genetic behavior of heirloom seeds.

Besides, the argument that heirloom seeds will cross pollinate doesn't really make any sense to me.

If you plant zucchini next to yellow squash, they might cross pollinate each other, even if they're NOT heirloom seeds.

If you plant two varieties of broccoli next to each other, they might cross pollinate. (But if you were a beginner, why would you do that? You'd probably buy just one kind of broccoli seeds.)

If you plant heirloom seeds of two completely different types next to each other, say broccoli and peas, they're never going to cross pollinate. So most people planting food would not ever run a whole lot of risk of cross pollination .

I haven't gotten to read through all 74 pages as of yet, but has anyone left any remarks on what all of this will potentially mean for real estate?! Thanks! Or any threads that anyone can tag me to?
There's also a thread or two.

I wonder if steroids would help recovery. They gave me Prednisone, I think.
Dr. John talked about steroids a while back in relation to this. Here's his statement on the matter (see 11:54-13:18):

The following is going explain why I like this group so much and how important you all are to my sanity:

I'm in an exchange with another community of people that is giving me great concern. My side gig involves selling scrap metal and recycled ewaste materials. Definitely NOT Fastlane, although I am trying to figure out how - but that is not the point of this comment. There are folks in that community who firmly believe that C0VlD-19 is a bio-weapon developed by China to take down the U.S. and presumably the rest of the "free" world. Some of them are saying that there's a second virus ready to be unleashed in a year or so to provide the "one, two punch" to take us out.

OMG talk about dangerous conspiracy theory. To make it worse, some of these folks have social media followings of thousands! They make these claims without real evidence and twist facts to suite their argument. Despite being a strong 5 on the Enneagram traits, followed closely by 9, I'm calling these people out. It's talk like theirs that can make this bad situation, very dangerous. I know I'm beating my head against a wall with them. But I just can't let them go unchallenged for fear that others might actually believe them.

There were some comments in this thread, about a week ago, that C0VlD-19 was an accidental release of a bio-weapon. I'm pretty sure we've put that discussion to rest, correct?

Thank you again for working hard to keep this thread based on facts, asking hard questions and having thoughtful discourse.

Things like steroids would be expected to make the infection worse. By steroids I’m assuming you are talking about corticosteroids type steroids such as cortisone, prednisone, prednisolone, etc (not sex steroids like testosterone). Steroids do many things, but they suppress the immune system and make people susceptible to both contracting infections and make the severity and lethality of infections greater.

WARNING: do not just stop taking steroids without talking to your doctor. Steroids must be tapered off slowly, you can throw your body into steroid crisis if you just suddenly stop, and it can kill you.

That didn’t take long. We were discussing earlier in this thread governments using cellphone data to track and identify coronavirus contacts, which doesn’t bode well for the future of privacy.
