[HASHTAG]#AndyTalks[/HASHTAG] 042 - 3 Maths Exam Tips

I've dropped this video into this thread. It took a bit of editing to get down to 2:21 (from about 2:50 I think).

I get unstuck/a fire under my arse when I have people to help.

In this case, I'm helping a niece and a couple of local lads to prepare for their Maths exams that start in 10 days time.

Expect more Maths videos to hit that thread in the next few days.

Tomorrow morning I'll be posting that video to Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. I'll be doing the same with forthcoming ones.

If it helps someone pass their exams, then it's been well worth it.

And of course, you don't learn until you launch. So this is going to help me learn more about video creation and marketing.

I posted that video to my Facebook page, and then boosted it for the last week.

Here's the results. If it's helped one person pass their Maths exams, then it's a great ROI.

[HASHTAG]#AndyTalks[/HASHTAG] 044 - Appreciate the now (37secs)

The Snapchat app is finally downloading videos properly again (the audio and video don't go out of sync)!

I could easily have recorded this on my camera in landscape, and edited if needs be afterwards.

I've posted this to my Facebook page, then shared to my personal Facebook timeline.

I've uploaded to YouTube.

I'll tweet it, and might post it to LinkedIn... or might do a landscape one and upload that instead.

The video is here.

[UPDATE]

I'm just about to head into Dublin to do a 3 hour lecture for The Irish Times Training who're putting on a Digital Marketing Diploma.

I've got the last lecture, and it's "Conversion and Revenue Generation".

I've created no powerpoint. All I need is a flip-chart, and an internet connection.

Here's the one pager I'll be giving everyone at the start, and the contents of what I'll go through. Will it fit into 3 hours?

NukXs0B.png

EDIT: Finished the lecture.

On the plus side, I whizzed through that stuff in an hour and a half. Can video this with a flip-chart easy enough I think. It's all there.

On the downside, I'm not sure how many of the class followed. There wasn't much interaction, note-taking, or aha moments.

Partly I could do more screenshots and graphics, partly I think it's also down to them. They're so new to online marketing. I'm giving them solutions to problems they might not have encountered yet, or I'm giving mindset stuff when they've not done enough to know how to apply it.

Made good contacts within The Irish Time Training team, and they do lots of courses. A chance to hone?

I was sat in a pub having a quiet cup of tea.

I created a 22 second video with Snapchat and downloaded it to my camera roll.

I've uploaded it to YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

It's in this post here.

Holy wow, are those standard metrics for facebook videos? That is an insane amount of views and reach for such a low budget (12 euro a day or overall?)

Don't get disheartened if much of the audience didn't pick up on what you were dropping (June 13th post). I look at it much the same way I do fastlane. Most people won't get it. Most people who do get it, won't care or won't take action. That's how we can be the 1% of the 1%.

€12 total spend. I've no idea what standard results are as I don't do much Facebook advertising. I believe someone watching 3 secs of your video counts as a view.

Yeah, I figured most of them on the course weren't like us. They were employees after all.

[UPDATE]

Just finished an hour of waffling about AdWords.

I do these calls all the time, and finally I'll have one recorded.

It was so much fun too.

You can find a link to it here:

Larry, who was the host, should have the recording later and I'll drop a more permanent link in here when it's done.

Blab is so easy to use, and a great little platform. I watched a great one this morning about branding. There's some interesting conversations going on.

Notes on the video:

Doh... I have a lovely mic sat on the desk, but used my wireless headphones because I thought I might stand up and use the flip chart. I didn't in the end, so could have had better sound quality. I'll do that next time.

I'm definitely talking slower and more clearly now-a-days. I think all the time on Snapchat has been helping. :)
A tradesman in Dublin watched this video and emailed me.

After a quick chat he's signed up this month to rent an AdWords campaign and landing page off me.

He pays the AdWords bill directly, and pays me a flat monthly fee.

In exchange I put his phone number on the landing page, and Request-a-Callback form fills get sent to his email address.

I've just sent him the first invoice.

If it works this month, then I'll put him on a standing order.

Damit... I should be in bed.

Anyway, someone mentioned this site to get videos transcribed. I didn't realise they also did the captions/subtitles. Very interesting...

EDIT: I've just paid €8.15 via Paypal to get the latest video (028) transcribed. It should be a 24 hour turnaround. I'll update this thread when I get the transcription.

Great recommendation Andy. I used Rev to transcribe a customers video and will use the transcription in its Youtube description.

[HASHTAG]#AndyTalks[/HASHTAG] 049 - First day back from 2 weeks off (2016-08-02) [1 min 33 secs]

I'm back! (From being on holiday, and back on Snapchat doing a vlog.)

I was able to use Basecamp on my mobile to keep business ticking over.

I had a few calls in evenings with people who needed help and who may end up becoming clients later on. I go into these calls with no expectations though - just a desire to help.

Given I've been mostly OOO for the last two weeks, it's even more important I prioritise today properly. I give a tip at the end of the video about how I make sure I separate planning/prioritisation from execution.

EDIT: That last slide doesn't show long enough... I'm fixing that now...

EDIT2: Nope, Camtasia isn't liking the files again and I'm not going to spend ages trying to fix it.

TL;DR: Your desk is for executing.

AndyTalks with The-J (93mins!)

Last night I recorded a Skype call with fellow INSIDERS @The-J.

Five minutes before the call I scrambled around trying to work out how to record it. I found www.pamela.biz which worked well (I signed up for the 30 day trial and I think it's only €25 anyway).

We dropped the call on the inside HERE (EDIT: We agreed to move it to the outside.)

Listening back to it, The-J sounds much better with his inbuilt laptop mic than I do with my wireless headset. I'm now in the market for a better headset that has a good quality mic. (I couldn't get my Blue Yeti working with Skype prior to the call, and I prefer a headset where I am not stuck in one position talking into it.)

I used Audacity to trim the chatting before and after the call. Even so, it was 93 minutes. Ha - we can both talk!

I hadn't really thought of just recording audio, but I'll consider it now. I can do it easily on the go with my iPhone, AND it's much easier to edit. Snapchat video isn't importing into Camtasia again - which means I can't edit the videos.

Maybe myself and The-J will do some more shorter audios on specific topics. Maybe we'll keep them all on the inside, or maybe we'll drop them on the outside in a thread. Maybe we'll even do a podcast as we think very similarly and what we do is similar, and we're both mostly freelancers moving towards being entrepreneurs/business owners.

Use Sony Vegas, it's way better than Camtasia and saves a lot of effort.
Recording with Audacity is better and tell me if you still haven't managed to make your mic work with skype.

I think you can get your talks and your business on next level by:
- Purchasing GoPro for SnapChat and for general video recordings (GoPro is good enough).
- Purchasing a good audio-interface and a better microphone, so you can come up with great quality recordings.
What do you think about that?

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions @devine

I barely use Camtasia tbh. I'll keep it if/when I do screen recordings... which I've not done for a while.

Every time I open up Skype before a call I have a wee panic trying to get my headset or mic working. The kids are often on the PC during the day and screw up my settings.

I've used Audacity a couple of times to edit audio and it's quite simple.

I like simple, and having Pamela running on my PC setup to automatically record every Skype call means there's one less step for me to forget.

As for using a GoPro... I know me. If it's not frictionless and fun then I'm just not going to do it. I like using my phone to record video because I have it one me all the time. It's good enough for talking-head vlogging, and even for doing flip-chart videos.

I'll certainly look for a better headset with a better mic. My headset makes me sound very sibilant.

I've no idea what a good audio-interface is. I'll check that out if a new headset hasn't improved the audio from me.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment.

AndyTalks with Mary - Getting Started in Business - Part 2

Crap title. I haven't worked out how to title these.

Anyway, second radio show on Dublin South FM.

Seems I'll have a regular radio show, where I won't have to go into their studio but can just create audios that they will put on the show. So chat's with forum members could work.

I had a chat with the young lad doing the audio. He's on a work-experience kind of scheme and loves it but will be gutted when he's back unemployed. I've said I might need help editing audios. He's delighted.

I also went for a coffee with Mary and the radio station manager afterwards and I was explaining how they could make more use of their content. Each show could be transcribed by rev.com and the transcription put up on their site to get some Google love and visitors. Then the audio and transcription added to YouTube (with a photo) and have captions.

Then update medium.com, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.

They loved this.

I said I'd work out how to do it, show them how, if they'd then do it for my content.

They threw in time in the studio too and we have a deal.

I dropped the show into this thread:

EDIT: I got some very interesting feedback from forum members when I asked what I should talk about HERE.

AndyTalks with TedM about Blogging, Authority, Services, & Sitting on Gold

Myself and @TedM recorded this the day before the radio interview with Mary in the post above, but was waiting for Ted to give me permission to drop it into the forum.

I recorded the Skype call automatically with Pamela.biz, then imported it into Audacity to edit out some chatter and confidential bits. I've then uploaded to Soundcloud

Dropped HERE.

I went on a course yesterday with Blaise Brosnan.

He's an all round gentleman who stands in the centre of the room telling business stories. I went on a course with him back in 2009 I think, and it was the best course I've ever been on - period.

Much of what I post about is what I learned on that course.

The course just started is the advanced one and there were 20 other business owners in the room yesterday morning.

I don't go on courses anymore, but when the email came through on Monday that he was doing this I couldn't get my credit card out quick enough.

This will be 8am-11am every Tuesday for 10 weeks.

Blaise is like a national institution amongst business folk here in Ireland. Very well liked and very well respected.

Here's his website: http://www.mriwex.ie

And here's a couple of videos from his website:

I ordered his book last night. Maybe we'll do a book giveaway?

Our "homework" this week was to do something uncomfortable that would help our business. I mailed Blaise asking if I could interview him next week after the course. Even just for 10 minutes. (TBH, it doesn't make me feel uncomfortable at all... but he couldn't very well refuse now could he!)

He's agreed so I've just bought this fella:

What's up Andy...

Since your an adwords guy, I figured you might know the answer to this. I was doing some keyword research yesterday and I'm wondering why google KWP isn't showing local search volume anymore?

Example: Search volume 1k-10k per month or 10K-100K per month.

Have you noticed this?

I take the search volumes and estimated CPCs from the Google Keyword Planner with a large pinch of salt.

I like to see related search terms, and then I just load campaigns and get real data.

[UPDATE]

I had a one-to-one with Blaise yesterday instead of interviewing him. I recorded that, but that's for my own use. ;)

Blaise drops nuggets constantly, and I write fast enough to catch all these one-liners. I'll create a thread and drop them all into.

In the meantime, I took the one that resonated the most yesterday and dropped it into this thread:

Steps Taken:
  • Write the line on a piece of paper.
  • Take a photo of the piece of paper in Snapchat.
  • Talk about the line in Snapchat.
  • Download the Snapchat story to my camera roll (it was only 48 seconds!).
  • Copy the file from my camera to Dropbox where I'm saving all this stuff.
  • Rename it to "You can't break tackles at marathon pace.mp4".
  • Upload it to Youtube.
  • Paste video into forum thread.

In progress:
  • Get a transcription via rev.com for $1.
  • Paste the transcription into the forum thread.
  • Post elsewhere (blog, Facebook page, LinkedIn, Instagram?, etc)

Transcription of your one-on-one with Blaise?

I'll genuinely do it for $0:
cunning-plan.jpg

I understand that it's not, I just want that conversation:)
Haha.

I'd not had a one-to-one with him since 2009, so I talked a lot bringing him up to speed.

We talked about my vision (see video below), and how I'm progressing towards it.

He asked particular questions such as:
  • How do people pay you?
  • How are you getting customers?

We talked about the hill I was climbing (exit strategy), that it was a 5 or 10 year plan, and where I was in that plan (in the foot-hills - haha).

He didn't think I was pricing too cheap, as he saw where I was going.

He wanted me to think about the end vision, and work back from there.

He agreed that I was in the "Spend money on diesel and coffee" stage, that it was OK to get customers by hook and by crook, and that it would get easier and easier as I get more customers in a particular vertical.

I'll re-listen to it next week and pull out some more notes/takeaways.

I pretty much did all the talking, and he agreed with everything. I learned from him NOT picking up on things (prices etc). He wasn't interested in the HOW, but my WHY. He literally asked half-way through "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

I'll volunteer to pitch my business to the rest of the group in a couple of weeks. One business owner is doing it per week.

Vlog 2016 09 22 – Next steps for [HASHTAG]#AndyTalks[/HASHTAG]

Vlogging will go on my blog and YouTube in future, unless I think it's helpful for this progress thread.

Someone will help me edit the shorter and better created videos that are intended to get propogated out there further.

TRANSCRIPTION

That was a nice cup of tea. I'm not going to do coffees anymore. I think one coffee a day was getting my heart rate up or something. It was weird. Lots to talk about this morning. Yesterday's video was, you can't break tackles at marathon pace. I downloaded that, put it on Youtube. It was only 48 seconds so I was able to upload it to Twitter as a native video. I got it transcribed for $1 because on rev.com it's $1 a minute so that was $1 of transcription. I tidied up the transcription. I created a blog post on andyblack.net with the video and then transcription below it. I dropped the same content that was on my blog post into the Fastlane Forum as a new thread. I posted it on LinkedIn with a link to the Youtube video. Then, I finally posted the video, natively, up to Facebook. When you post it natively to Facebook rather than a link to Youtube video, it automatically plays. 48 second video and its text content got posted lots of different places.

It's not something I want to do every single day, but I will for that minute while I create the process. What was interesting is that somebody who follows me in the fastlaneforum.com, who also follows me on Facebook, he watched the video on Facebook and he spotted that the audio and the video were getting out of syn which I've noticed as well. He then private messaged me in the forum to tell me that the audio and video is out of sync and asked me if I needed any help editing videos because he's a video editor and he spent 1 1/2 years in an advertising agency doing that kind of work plus graphic design and other things. I said, "Great. Let's have a chat on Skype." We had a chat last night for an hour, hour 15. For the first part of the call we talked about what my goals were for creating videos and it was actually very helpful for me just to even articulate that.

I'm going to continue using Snapchat and use it more of a vlogging platform where I just talk about my business and what I'm doing everyday. Then, very now and then, something I talk about in one of these vlogs will have inspired a proper video. That suits the way I work because often I don't know what I'm going to say until I start talking and I've had personalty profiling tell me that. It suits my why's, as well. I'd like this to be a legacy for my kids to follow and see how dad created his business, or whatever. I'll have it on Snapchat, I'll put it up on Youtube. Maybe on a blog post in a certain category. It's my vlogs so other people can follow them if they want. I won't promote them or do anything like that. I won't put them in Facebook and LinkedIn and things like that. Instead, I'll end up creating a 30 second or 60 second tight piece of video content that will look more professional and that'll go out. Possibly not daily. Probably not daily.

For example, because of what happened yesterday, I'm going to be using this guy to help come up I think a process and do it in such a way that it's going to create a win win. It's going to help him as well, to get more clients to do the same thing for them. The reason I'm going to use this guy rather than put up an ad or put out feelers asking if anybody's interested in doing it is because he came to me, he reached out. That shows a certain level of interest and intent and action taking. Which brings me to a great line I heard years ago and I've sort of lived by, the person who'll run with the ball is the person who catches the ball.

Tomorrow I’ll bring my moleskin and pen (my notebook) and when I’m waiting for traffic to die down, I’ll be able to plan my week. Scrap that, maybe I won’t. It’s quite nice just to have a bit of peace and quiet for a second before my week starts. It’s only five past nine and the queues have pretty much died down already so another five minutes I’ll just head home.

Do you love Monday mornings? I’ve mentioned this before that Monday morning to me is like a New Year’s Day. It’s a chance to start a fresh.

I’ll whiz through the notes I made from last week, see if there’s anything outstanding. I’ll add them into the to-do list, but I won’t go too anal about it. If it’s really important, I’ll remember it when I write out my to-do list this morning, or somebody will come up and remind me again.

I like my to-do list to be short. Ideally it’s the one thing that needs done today or this week. Typically that involves writing out quite a big to-do this, but as you’re writing more things pop into your head. You don’t always need to do all that stuff.

What’s worth doing, once you’ve got that big list, it’s just looking through it and working out what is that one thing that if you did it everything else is irrelevant, or easier to do. If you’re in business that most likely means getting more sales. Sales solves everything.

As Blaise Brosnan said on the course last week, “Make enough pennies, and you can employ somebody to count them.”

Just looking at all the notes I wrote today, in the three hours we were with Blaise. My goodness, I'll have to type all this stuff up.

The main theme for today was about creating systems, so that we're creating a business not a job. Our business purpose isn't to make money, it's to build a business that makes money. And as a business owner, as a business person, our brain-power is used in creating the systems. We've got to create the processes and then hand them over for other people to follow them.

Or as Blaise said, "We have to be ambitiously lazy." Which I'm not going to tell my wife, of course. The day has a few rocks in it, these are the things that we need to get done, and then life throws in sand between the rocks. We shouldn't be wasting our time dealing with the sand, we should be working on the rocks in our business. The sand costs money.

My homework for this week, I've got three pieces of homework. One is I've got to flowchart my business. What happens from the minute I get a lead, or maybe even before that, to getting a client, and then what needs done before I bill them.

The second thing is I've got to do one thing this week that's ambitiously lazy. The third he asked for a volunteer to pitch their business next week to the rest of the room, and I shot my hand up.

Final thought, and I think it's a really important one from the course is you can't invoice for input. The market doesn't pay for activity. It doesn't matter how busy you were. The market pays for output. What have you done today that can go through the till? What output can you invoice for?
