I've searched the forum and didn't find where this topic had been discussed yet:

"How do you perform due diligence for an internet-based fastlane business?"

I know that's a very broad question, so I'd like to give an example of what I'm looking at, and hopefully you could point me in the right direction or help specifically...

I'm looking at putting together a lead generation website to connect people to specific services; as an example, let's say the website will help connect people to the best dentists in their area.

What's the need? The consumer currently has no way to know who is the best dentist in the area, and is forced to choose one either by looking through the yellow pages (and deciding on the one that has the best looking ad) or by referral or by trial and error.

What's the benefit to the consumer by coming to our website? We've done the research for them to find out who the best dentists are in their area (especially helpful if you've just moved to a new area) and the service doesn't cost them anything.

What's the business model? Basic lead gen - The consumer comes to our website, fills out a form indicating what services they need from the dentist, we relay the consumer's info onto the top 3 dentists in their area, these dentists each pay a $3 fee for referring a qualified lead to them, the dentist calls the consumer to set up an appointment or consultation.

What's the benefit to the dentist? They are receiving a qualified lead (qualified by having the consumer answer specific questions on our website for the services they need) for a low, low cost compared to other avenues of advertising.

Okay, so that's pretty much an example of what I'm looking at; and after some initial research I've come to the conclusion that I can definitely do a better job than what some of the other companies in this field are currently doing, either because the they aren't doing a good job at it or by creating a new spin on what's currently offered.

So far, I've researched what these other dentist lead-gen companies are doing, I've looked at their websites and checked out the forms they have the consumer fill out, I have a basic range for what they're charging the dentists for the referral leads, I have a good idea on how to get the info on who the best dentists are in areas, I've checked out compete and alexa to find what kind of traffic my competitors are pulling through their sites, and I've looked at domain names for the biz, but where do I go from here, what other due diligence would be required for this type of business before pulling the trigger?

Thanks!

Speed+ for helpful replies! 😀

Quick question, how would you decide which service provider was the best out of the bunch? would you test them yourself or would you incorporate say a user based review?

smashing1989 said:

Quick question, how would you decide which service provider was the best out of the bunch? would you test them yourself or would you incorporate say a user based review?

I don't really want to answer that question on a public forum, because that is a bit of the competitive advantage I'll have initially.

...................

I also realize at some point I'm going to need to talk with several dentists (at least locally) to discover what they need in order for a lead to be considered "qualified" to them, but I'd like to know what due diligence should be performed before soliciting the dentists.

Thanks again!

classified details i see well that's fair enough...i kinda realised after i posted you probably wouldn't say lol anyway unfortunately i cant help with the due diligence issue but im sure someone will help soon good luck with it anyway

I guess you would need to fully qualify the dentist before even contacting them. Meaning making sure they have no pending or heinous judgments against them. Then a way to verify this over time.

To me, this seems like an awesome question, and one that I've been having myself about the function of need and how it is qualified. I wonder if you found a solution for the most effective way for performing the analysis of a proposed Internet-based business, or did you just move to low level testing to begin qualifying your assumptions?

Its simple. You checked the web for competitors, so there is ovbiously some level of demand.

What to do next, get lead buyers lined up before you even launch the website. This will prove demand, then you simply fullfil the need.

This is another way of "finding a need and filling it". You are collecting the need and filling it. If you find clients that are using other services or have tried some in the past, thats what you do your competition analysis, start asking good questions.

SFBob said:

To me, this seems like an awesome question, and one that I've been having myself about the function of need and how it is qualified. Like Lighthouse said, you should check out the competition and see what they're offering. I think the key is to offer something better or unique to what is already out there.

In regards to running the numbers to see if this venture is going to be profitable - be sure to run *very conservative* preliminary numbers through your spreadsheet, accounting for all your income and expenses - and use this as your basis. If you can work with those numbers, it's probably time to take the next step or take the leap altogether.

Another suggestion - If you can, give it away for free! I believe they call this business model the "freemium"; where people can test out a portion of the site or service for free and if they like it they can upgrade to a membership or pay for the service, however you have it set up.

I can't wait 'til Snowbank's blog comes out, he could explain to you how EV (expected value) relates to business. That dude is freaking brilliant.

Also, here's a related thread to your original question:

customer development video
