I read somewhere that happiness is about 20% genetic, 30% circumstantial, and 50% based on ones own autonomy / ones ability to have control over their life, so it rings true. Although it makes sense also that people who are passionate about what they do generally have more breadth of experience, are more creative, more well rounded individuals. Also wisdom should translate to happiness I think, and experience leads to that.

Those are interesting stats.

I would say circumstantial is also just long term autonomy. So now you have 80% locus.

Your choices matter. In the long term they dictate your circumstances.

I feel bad, as I haven’t had much to offer back,

Ssshhh. You're not paying attention.

I worked much like the whole day and was tired but wanted to continue. It is now 10pm in Uganda. But I felt tired an unable to continue. I wanted to sleep.

Then I decided to check the TFF. I kept seeing @Shono headlining here and there. Got hold of the thread and BOOM! . The guy is making everyone's day.

@Shono this thread you started has made my day. I got more fuel and knocked a chapter I wanted to postpone till later.

@Shono you literally made someone's day.

Stop diminishing your accomplishments. Stay humble, yes, but recognize that you are capable of having an impact. Today. Right now.

My ultimate dream is to become someone who can help others quit horrible addictions like video games/porn/alcohol because I suffered with those for a cumulative 20 year period, but I feel like that is something that has to come after I've already established myself, not the first thing I pursue, so I want to become successful first to show it can be done despite being set back so far. That is my goal in life as it stands.

To quote @Andy Black

What if you already know enough?

I sincerely do not know. At least not with my current state of mind/confidence.

Hey bro, maybe you could tell stories. Learn video editing. Create a story, use your training footage, and create a kickass brand on youtube.

Right now your video is pure grind and raw like a gem unfurnished. Some people will relate to it and a lot of people will not. The thing is some of the people in the majority are those who you want to help. (But the question is how can you reach them?) How do you turn the unfurnished video into a glistening gem and put on on the shelves for people?

People call it optimizing for retention, but it's really making the video digestible.

I happen to relate to the video as it is because I love training. Seeing you sweat made me want to do dips or pulls up with 90 lbs for maximum reps(but it's a rest day for me so I'll do it Friday).

Consider who is addicted to games, porn, alcohol, etc... This is Russel Brunson's dream customer concept if you wanna look into it after this post. On the top of my head(cause I was one of them) they're people who have wildly f*cked up dopamine levels and short attention spans as a result of their addictions(not talking dissing them, just the way things are). So if your target audience is them, you need to engineer your videos to combat those things and at the same time deliver value. That is your video's version of a polished gem.

Will they watch your video for 55 min and feel inspired? Or will they be more excited to watch a shorter video with the highlight parts, see your struggles, and learn your mindset along the way? (food for thoughts.)

In order to help them, you need a way to capture their attention span and provide them with just enough dosage of stimulation that they can learn from you. Go a step further, what age group do you see these people in? What language and words can you use in your video to further connect to them?

The thing is if you turn the training video into a narrative. Here's where I started...(addictions). This is why I hated it and needed to change(CTA). Here's how I did it(lay out the steps and tell what your video is about). Then set some stakes and make the video more interesting(tell them how people have tried the same thing as you but failed). Then get to the meat of the story and show you succeeding.

I think there is a large need for a solution to these problems. Matter of fact, they're problems that are evergreen. That means you can deliver a solution no one else can because If you look outside, someone is still struggling with porn. Someone is still struggling with games. Someone is still struggling with alcohol. Not everything is solved.

Also to touch on you need to build expertise before creating something...
attractive character.jpg

Being a leader or an expert is only one of many ways for people to connect to you and see value in what you have to say(check out the identity side of the image I attached).

You could be the adventurer/crusader and document what has worked for you.

I think I read somewhere on this forum that you don't set out to build something because you're an authority. You become an authority when you build something.

F*ck it.

@Shono... I'll put $5/day YouTube Ad spend behind it for a couple of weeks. I'm not great at YouTube ads and this could help me learn while helping you. Maybe it will work for Google Ads too. I'll check that as well.

Reply if you're up for it and I'll set the wheels in motion.
We're not running YouTube ads yet. I didn't want to pre-empt the solution so we had a chat yesterday evening. We came up with a possible plan for creating more videos that Shono can digest/amend/discard as he sees fit.

Man this is awesome! Just when I thought I should feel bad about not even being able to complete a full round while this guy is doing 12, you had to improve it to 16 eh?
The 'what if you already know enough' would be quite an understatement here, you're literally already a world record holder (until proven otherwise), even here on this forum I don't think there's many people who could say that. Why don't you do a (short) video series of how to become a world champion, or write a book about your story and journey to this record.

What would Joe Rogan say if he saw this? How do we get it in front of him?
I'd imagine he'd share the general sentiment of excitement of this thread and he'd love this sort of stuff. Networking, share it to enough people in his network who also like this and you dramatically improve the chance it will get to him. Oh, and also a shorter, clickbaitier, in your face version of the video would help for sure.

I'll tell anyone who might be interested that this is amazing and they should have this guy on their show. Please let me know if there's any way I could help.

While I can't do one pushup as a broken off middle age dude about to be senior citizen with two arm injuries, back in the day when I was 17 in Army basic I could pound them out but not Shono level.

I think what needs to be done here is all the fit people here need to band together and do the Shono Challenge. See how many rounds they can do. Video it and than someone put together a master video. That would be Shono epic.

Thanks for the chat Andy. It was a big step out of my comfort zone but I learned so much, and it really made me think about possibilities for the future. I am currently recuperating a sprain so I’m taking 3-7 days off from any extensive exercising but I’ve taken notes and am keeping everything you said at the forefront of my mind. I hope I can speak to you again in the future, with some accomplishments under my belt.

Man this is awesome! Just when I thought I should feel bad about not even being able to complete a full round while this guy is doing 12, you had to improve it to 16 eh?
I have been training for quite some time, which allowed me to do such a thing. I have no doubt anyone can accomplish similar feats with the right build up :bicep:.

Why don't you do a (short) video series of how to become a world champion, or write a book about your story and journey to this record.
I really need a redemption arc. I am struggling immensely with my self identity and shame these days since I essentially spent the last 7 years in an alcohol induced stupor. I am out of that hole now, but I feel so far behind. If I could become successful and share my story, it would be built upon overcoming this, as it was truly the loneliest and darkest part of my life. I am now feeling the brunt of those emotions sober, and the path ahead seems painful but I won’t give up.

I think what needs to be done here is all the fit people here need to band together and do the Shono Challenge. See how many rounds they can do. Video it and than someone put together a master video. That would be Shono epic.
That would be quite epic

Edit: also @Andy Black I know you inferred I can leverage myself as the pushup or ‘sally up’ guy on my channel, but for now I would like to try and break the plank record, since that seems much more profound. It is what is on my radar, as far as fitness goals are concerned.

Be careful with your joints and ligaments.
Take as much time off as it's needed. Don't endanger the long-term success of your athletic pursuits.

I hate when I'm not able to train due to injuries, but I remind myself that the alternative is worse.

Absolutely. Slow and steady. I have experienced injuries many times in the past from being overzealous, so I learned from experience . The 3-7 days off is precisely damage control not to exacerbate anything beyond plain discomfort. Thank you for the reminder, the alternative is certainly many times worse.

Pretty amazing you are this athletic after 7 years of that much booze. Did you go cold turkey or get help of a 12 step program or other strategy to get sober?

Funny thing that… when I was exercising I would start my day with a workout then have 3-4 pints of beer for lunch and pass out, and I was able to rationalize that behaviour because I would go for a 10 mile run in the evening to burn off the excess calories. So in some ridiculous irony drinking alcohol kept me fit because I would promise myself to train extra hard. Not everyday but quite consistently, I would workout 3 hours a day and have 6-8 pints of beer.

I had attempted AA with no luck for some time. I went cold turkey when the pain of remaining an addict and frittering away my life finally exceeded the pain of experiencing sobriety. Enough was enough. I do however also have an some understanding of trauma and addiction, which helped me step away from the behaviours as well.

I have already opted in for this.

In 2020 or 2021, I cannot remember very specifically, there was an online dance challenge based on a song called Jerusalema by a South African one hit wonder artist. I think it was very popular. I no longer follow entertainers that much but my brother was always yapping about it.
That would be quite epic
For sure. It will be awesome.

I think @Shono's love for fitness and training saved him from getting crushed by booze.

It is possible, although fitness in itself could be a debilitating addiction or compulsion such as cases seen in anorexia patients, so I have to be careful to find balance . I exercise because it's the healthiest way to calm my spastic head.

Perfect example of taking something very destructive and turning it into something positive.

Now imagine how much easier would have been if you just did the training, without that poison in your life.

You cannot go back in time to re-live those 7 years. But guess what?
You have 7-70 years ahead of you.

Just imagine how wonderful life is going to be in 7 years if you stay on the path that you've chosen and you make daily progress towards being the person you truly want to be.

Every day we can either step towards the light, or towards the darkness. We are the only ones that can decide which one of those is going to be. We are creating our destiny.

Never try to forget anything that happened in the last 7 years. This horrible period of time is going to be the foundation for your future life, and the source of your wisdom.

fitness in itself could be a debilitating addiction
The definition of addiction is compulsive behavior that you can't stop from doing, and is causing you harm.

The only moment when fitness becomes an addiction, is when you get badly injured as a result of your excessive training.

Exercising is a miracle for the brain and body, and all the successful people that I know are obsessed with fitness, so let's keep TRAINING HARD. :bolt:

Absolutely. I can’t forget even if I wanted to, it’s a necessary reminder for me and inspires me to work even harder now.

Man, after listening to this podcast with Andrew Huberman did I start realizing just how bad alcohol is for your body.
Certainly, this podcast was very eye opening for me. The book ‘This Naked Mind’ by Annie Grace as well as her videos also helped.

Thank you @heavy_industry . Founding something is pretty easier compared to running it. I was founding president of an association at University. Tough to found. But tougher to run and grow.

Is a great picture, look confident and agree have a one day gonna be a CEO look. I was just thinking of this the other day. I'm strong with launching brands both on creative and structure side but maintaining and growing is a different story. Is the university association you started still going?

We've not run any YouTube Ads yet. I'm curious where those views are coming from too. Is it from the forum and people sharing? Or from searches on YouTube and/or Google for "sally up challenge" etc?

The video has a load of Likes and Shon is also up to 70 subscribers.

@Shono ... what were your takeaways from our chat last week? What's the one thing you aim to complete this week?
I had posted it in my instagram, and a friend of mine with about 175k followers also shared it briefly! I am quite surprised at the turnout, I hadn’t looked at it until recently.

My first takeaway from our chat is as you said, it is important to take action. I tend to be one to overanalyze and plan before executing, despite knowing that the best of entrepreneurs jump off a cliff and mcgyver an airplane on the way down. That is real urgency, which I’ve lacked my whole life. Also the way you put into words the whole academic smarts of studying for the perfect score vs the street smarts of efficient action really opened my eyes.

The second takeaway is to master the focus, to really hone in on what is important for the week, instead of drifting around in all sorts of directions and making mediocre progress on many things, it’s better to utilize your time and energy on the key goal for the week.

I am also keeping in mind what you advised with namecheap etc.

Thank you as always :praise:

They are coming from people wanting to witness this legend breaking the world record.

@Shono
I would strongly encourage you to:
  • delete or set to private all the videos that are not related to fitness
    • some of them might turn off a lot of people
    • trust me when I say this, it's extremely important
  • set a new profile picture on the channel which is coherent with the message you're trying to show to the world
  • gradually expand into other physical challenges after you recover from your injury
  • expand into the social media market using short form videos

Step by step everything will turn into gold.
We're all very proud of you.

From Reddit was 750 views on the post with 67% upvotes and 3 upvotes showing. I'd guess a 100 or so views from there. While easy to watch on Reddit, I think to get credit for views I do believe they need to watch at least for 30 seconds to count? Sound like you got a lot of your views from your friend. You should cross collab with him if possible, make a win win and could be a huge boost.

That is some great optimization advice from @heavy_industry. Also proud of you Shono, have come a long way in short time. In addition, proud of this community as the support has been awesome and our pushup hero deserves it.

Do you really think so?
No, I don't think or believe this.

I know it for a fact.

We cannot escape the consequences of our actions. The way we make our life is the way it happens.

Nothing in this world beats incremental improvement.

Every step taken into a positive direction counts. If you walk on the same path for long enough, the consequences start piling up and a snowball effect is created. Works like compound interest.

This is true for both positive and negative things. It's either exponential growth or exponential decline.

You've already experienced the horrible reality of exponential decline.

Now it's time to experience exponential growth.

Life is going to be so wonderful you wouldn't be able to believe it.

But for that, the process needs to be executed. Small steps every single day.

Success will happen.

You fire me up. The positivity is contagious man, and I hope I can start my path towards exponential growth and execute the right process. To use that age old analogy, my greatest enemy has truly been my mind for all of these years, so I need to start with a reframe and reprogram my conscious with a more self-caring and optimistic point of view. Becoming successful has always been a foreign concept to me, since I was basically in survival mode mentally, time to thrive. If you know it for a fact, I hope one day I can prove you right, until then, thank you for your kind words and for the encouragement. It means more than you can know. I won’t give up. :praise:

@Shono great to see the progress of this thread.

Ever since then I have grown to an average of 200 pushups a day. 100 in morning before work, but after reading and 100 in the evening.

Today I did 200 pushups and 200 squats. 100 each in the morning and 100 each in the evening.

I do them on sets. I don't do all at once.

Afterwards the day's work rolls away because the energy is explosive.

But people are complaining that I have lost wait.
