I'm thinking that, if someone is already in a situation you want to be, then that person is a good mentor. You could save time, and not repeat the mistakes they've already committed. Some people can do it themselves, but some need that accountability/guidance. I myself am a person who used to consume all the content and not take any action. But now I've started getting better at execution.

No. You don’t *need* a mentor.

I’d also suggest that just because someone is where you want to be doesn’t automatically mean they’re a good mentor, or a good mentor for you in particular. And that someone could be a good mentor even if they’re not where you want to be.

There’s plenty of free mentoring in this forum.

Doesn't having a mentor save us a lot of time, while figuring it out ourselves? I agree that all can't be good mentors, but how can someone who hasn't done or reached somewhere you want to be a mentor?

I agree with Andy in that nobody *needs* a mentor. But of course a mentor can be very valuable to have if it is a good fit for both people.

Depending on what specifically you want to be mentored on then the mentor having achieved this specific goal themselves might be important or not.

For example, as a coach, I can help people with all different kinds of goals. The help I give is more with managing the process, motivation, the person's mindset, blind spots and actions that they take, rather than giving specific advice on which actions to take or not take and in which order. Accountability is also part of it.
