Does anyone have experience with copywriting, brand advisor-ing, or general marketing consulting? (discussion thread)

Hello everyone,

This thread is to share experiences in the marketing consulting market. Here you can share your story, use it as an accountability area, warn others about bad advice, and grow together. I'll go first.

I've been hopping into a few copywriting resources online, but I fear that there exists a massive oversaturation in the market. This is leading me to research a hybrid copywriting-branding consultant agency business model that would not only stand out from the crowded thousands of copywriters but is also scalable in the same way just a copywriting agency would be. It very well may be dumb and I'm sure I won't be the first guy to come up with it. First, I am going to spend a month or two mastering the arts. This will likely be a long and hard process due to the upcoming vacations I have, plus commitments to PT after breaking my arm, school, karate, working out, ETC ETC ETC.

Will update.

Honestly with how fast AI is progressing on the copywriting front and with the saturation, I’m not sure I would pressure a copywriting based business.

Perhaps. This is a lot more than copywriting, however. And I know that some idiotic money-chasing guy is gonna use AI to do all bits of his confined copy business. And so is another guy. Soon there are 100k people out there with shitty copy and I come to a company with, yes, copy skills but also funneling skills, ad skills, and branding skills. Sounds more and more like just consulting when I talk about it more but I'll be able to find the kick. This is also basically one of the first businesses I'm attempting and I live with my parents, so if it goes belly-up I'll be glad for the experience.

Also, AI cannot really understand human emotion and probably won't for a long, long time. That's already 1-0 me.

With respect, I don’t think you understand the massive amount of progress that AI has made recently.

Maybe I don’t. But we’ve been to the moon for almost 60 years and mars is so far away. It also took 2 million years for man to realize we live on tectonic plates that shift. It also took Oppenhimer just 12 years to go from the the first nuclear fission to a bomb. The fact of the matter is we just don’t know. I’m still young, so I’m going to try, just to get some experience. If AI takes it over, well, no one will have a job anyways

With respect, this argument has been presented across this forum for 10+ years and numerous copywriting businesses were built to 6-figures+ decontructed and built again over that period and AI still can't produce remotely good copy.

I think I have my idea coming together:

Marketing departments are essential in making a brand, and brand is what has made so many companies successful, even if their product was a steaming lump of dogshit.

But small and medium sized businesses just cannot afford all the employees.

My dad works in marketing for a local casino so I am going to see if I can shadow him or intern there or something. Learn more about the industry.

Then I start copywriting, just to build capital.

Then I train some classmates in everything I have learned and employ them for 5% profits.

In other words I create my more efficient marketing group and get clients (all fast lane companies) and they save costs by hiring us (5-10% of the profits we make them)

I don’t know if it will work and it’s very ambitious considering I’m in middle school but it would be a great buisness once it’s up and running.

What does everyone think? Any flaws in my plan? Any (hint hint) mentors who could help me?

Start reaching out to the potential market before learning anything.

Sure, besides of this business it's a great skill to know copy, but go market first. You have an idea for [Y] buyers go solve them [X]? Reach out to Y.

Look at this post of mine. Find the first client to serve - wherever you can (your father's connections is a great way to start!). Put all the work into finding the first client, and then learn what you need along the way.

Remember - you have an idea? Try to sell it to the market. What does market respond? What you've learned? Build that, or don't build at all.

I think the idea isn't viable for me now, but how do I go about it if I did this?
