This is kinda cool and I only seen it for the first time a few minutes ago...

I was going through google analytics for a newer site I am building and decided to check on an older site I redesigned last year. I usually check stats for the first few months when I build a website and then leave it after that so it has been nearly a year since I last checked. This was a business that was around for a few years before they got in touch with me.

Screen Shot 2017-09-06 at 7.36.27 PM.png

So a 5 times gain in visitors, a 7 time gain in times they visited the site, and double the time spent on the site. If you multiple the amount of sessions by them staying 2 times longer on the website that is a 14 times improvement on promoting their business. Not bad.

These guys are big industry players with several million in assets and high 7 figure sales every year. I don't know the exact revenue numbers but this made a BIG difference.

This isn't some advertisement for my web design but rather a point that what you learn on these forums has massive real world results. This is something I learned by using inspiration from several people on here and using what they were doing in other areas to work on my own skill set. There are many people on here who I learned from but in particular I got huge inspiration from @SinisterLex @IceCreamKid @Andy Black and @G_Alexander. And of course @MJ DeMarco himself!

If you are new here and are working on any skill set just realize it will take time to see the gains. Keep working hard, always try add as much value as possible, and follow the breadcrumbs of success others leave behind.

Damn! Impressive when you put those number into a business with a proven model and existing customers. Imagine if you could take a % of the improvements, Super-Dooper Fastlane!

50% bounce rate? Your website is still bad or what your offering is not what people want.

I'm guessing FOX pumps life into other companies websites. He would take an upfront profit in return for his expertise.

It's just great to see how your touch doubles exposure. 50% of a thousand vs 50% of 100. I dig it.

Like MJ said, to take a % on your projects would be icing on the cake.

Congrats!

Way to completely ignore the lesson behind the thread.

Regardless of your opinion, the bounce rate is still down from what it was, and all other stats are up 50-700%+.

Like @Azure said, it's more than likely a traffic targeting problem. <-- oh look, another way to provide value, which you missed with your negative filter.

@Fox mentioned that the company is doing high 7 figures in sales. Clearly they are offering what people want, much more so than yourself.

Anyhow, good luck creating value in the world with your pessimistic outlook.

Ultimately Fox is not responsible for what segments of traffic they receive. They could have a ppc targeting issue.

They don't run any ads. Both businesses rely solely on SEO. The number increase is from better ranking along with a much more informative site.

@fhs8 wrong again. It is something that is searched all over Northern America but it is also very highly specialised (and mostly localized) so that would cause some people to leave again. This isn't ecommerce where we ship all over > they only cater to certain areas. And the site now shows up top results for a lot of industry keywords.

Also on a side note the bounce rate doesn't have much movement up or down because it is comparing my own site against my own site. These stats are comparing my redesign this year for a set period against my redesign last year (for that same period after it launched). The site that was there before would have had a much higher bounce rate. If I had the previous sites stats all these figures would be even higher.

I have just started partnering up with one business to test this out. I won't be taking any % this time since it is a trial run but there has already been a huge improvement. When more time has passed I will post a thread on this.

Are you tracking also conversion rate? For example, how many of its visitors are filling the contact form, or clicking in the phone link from mobile (if any).

If you are not using yet Google Tag Manager, it's a easier way to track all sort of events with analytics, without coding.
Tag Management Solutions for Web and Mobile - Google Tag Manager – Google

Also, with GTM you can add a lot of different trackers and plugins in your site without touching the code. Great for marketers.

For example, you can add the hotjar tracking code. Hotjar is a tracking tool that shows you heatmaps, recordings of the visitors of the page, funnel stats and more data that helps you improve your web a lot.
Hotjar - Heatmaps, Visitor Recordings, Conversion Funnels, Form Analytics, Feedback Polls and Surveys in One Platform

Probably your focus is not currently in improve one specific website (at least with your web design agency). But if you watch all this users behaviours you can learn a lot and apply this knowledge to your next projects.

One more tool very useful to learn and to improve a website (e-commerce, landing page, whatever) is Google Optimize. You can make A/B tests with it, again without touching code. Perfect tool for marketers.
Website, AB Testing & Personalization Solutions - Google Optimize – Google

I just found the other day a great resource regarding to A/B tests. You can save a lot of time just using patterns that already work. I'm thinking in buying a premium account here, but the free content is great anyway: GoodUI Evidence

My point being... don't get so het up about KPIs. Worry more about ACTUAL performance, not Key Performance INDICATORS.

Maybe watch this video:

@Fox... if they're getting leads for locations they don't cover, then maybe they can consider capturing them and doing something else with them (covering that area, building relationships with businesses that do cover that area, etc).

Maybe watch this video:
KPI are only that, indicators. They help you in making informed decisions, being aware of new opportunities and keeping track of things that don't perform as you thought.

The key I think is to try to add massive value first and then optimize how you serve it.

+ 1 to google tag manager.

You install it once. And after that you will have control and options to create different triggers, read different parameters and insert all kinds of tracking code from one interface.

Bounce rate, time on site, and pages visited on site aren't KPIs at all. They tell very little.

Bounce rate could mean that people are leaving BECAUSE they got everything they needed. One little bit of info, boom they're gone. Low time on site and pages visited on site could mean the exact same thing.

Let's say you're dealing with an ecommerce site w/ a blog. High time on site and high pages visited probably means they fell into the content rabbit hole. If your content rabbit hole isn't converting customers, though, what you're looking at are vanity metrics that don't correspond to revenue.

People mistake them for KPIs when they restrict themselves to a single view of the number.

I want to track people who submit their email in a modal pop-up form.

Right now, I've got the form re-directing to a thank you page in order for me to track the arrival on that thank you page as the conversion.

Is there a way Google Tag Manager can track this conversion without me having to do the redirect?

Yes, from GTM you can create an event in the submit of the form. I don't have my laptop right now to give you the exact steps, but definitely you can do it with GTM.

If your form or submit button has an unique id is pretty easy to do it. If not, maybe you need to know a bit of css selectors.

EDIT: Tomorrow in my laptop I'll create an intro guide to GTM if it not exist yet in the forum to answer you and to not hijack this thread ;)

Glazed over this thread but wanted to come back for one thing: Anyone used Fullstory?

Haven't used it yet, but apparently It records every user's session for playback.
That way you don't have to rely on dumb vanity metrics.
Looks like it really takes the guesswork out of user behavior 100%:

FullStory | Pixel-Perfect Session Replay

Just look at the demo on the home page.
I'm drooling.

You have no idea how much I'd appreciate this. Been struggling between different apps to find functionality vs. features, and I want to rip my hair out this point, and I'm using a sub-optimal solution.

If I could just track an event somehow like you said... that'd be brilliant

We are using Hotjar for that, but it seems that Fullstory is more complete and easier to find the data. Thanks for sharing it!

The problem with user's session playbacks is that you never know why that particular user is behaving in that way. Is a great tool, no doubt, but sometimes it gives you more questions than answers.

Heat maps in landing and product pages and tracking of abandonment in forms are more useful in my opinion. In a form, you can track how many time users spend in a field, in which field they abandon, etc.

Damn true.
Reps+!
Likewise, if the online biz has to depend solely on KPIs for survival, it's not in good health.

And that's why I don't feel like adopting a content marketing strategy anytime soon. Maybe later...but not now. I still don't have much of a locus of control over that sect lol.
