I really don't like preparing meals, so solutions like yours are always of interest to me, plus I'm very hungry right now, so here's my feedback
(personal opinion, so please take it with a grain of salt & chips:)

- Website and product design looks awesome. It would really stand out among other products.

- Copywriting seems to be on point to. The page held my interest.

- Nutritional profile is not the one I'd prefer right now, on "cutting" phase of my workout. Or maybe ever. I would want more protein. Or at least a more detailed breakdown of nutrients. Would be important for me to know is it complete protein.

- Ingredients are not particularly appealing to me, and while I'd be open to it, I avoid soy, so on that fact alone I certainly wouldn't be a consumer. At best I might try it sometime.

- By the look of it, it doesn't make me confident that I'd get the feeling of fullness, and that matters a lot. I tried covering my nutritional needs without regard for feeling full - and it didn't work for me. That said, the way to convince me otherwise would only be:

Read: SAMPLES

They have to TASTE IT.

I've become a consumer of quite a few products based on a free sample.

All that said - I think it is a great idea and wish you much luck with it.

Yes custom audience from email need at least 100. The perfect seed is between 1000 to 5000 but I'm having success with above 300.

Try this setting: you have to put the url where the page view event fire
View attachment 14406

Let me know how it goes.

Out of curiosity? Did you use a video ad?

Congrats, not sure how much you have spent but it seems that you're doing good.

Thanks. Will do.

No, I didn't use video ad, just tweaked the copy so it went in line with our offer of 12 free units for signing up and used this pic to be more eye-grabbing.

Looks cool, video ads are much cheaper since facebook is trying to push them since they want to compete with youtube.
Try some color variation on ad ads level (different creative) fb will choose which one is performing the best. How many leads are you trying to collect?

Nice to know that. Will use video ads once we have it done. Waiting for final touches on video. I will share it here once it's done.

Technically I need around 2.000 emails but we're going for 5.000. About the budget, I have spent around 20€ so far.

Edit: To clarify, since I updated the website I have only spent around 20€ in ads.

i eat products like that when hiking.

this is a special niche : food for hiking, bushcraft

if you don't really find the right niche and the best 20 % of the niche, i predict you will go nowhere

@juanalou I'm a little curious how you arrived at the viability of offering 12 units (12 bags?) for an email sign up alone.
Or am I reading that completely wrong?

If you reach your minimum target of 2,000 emails, that amounts to 24,000 free units.
If that's the case, isn't it a little overkill?

I believe 2 of each flavor (6 total) would more than suffice, and eases production pressure during the initial fulfillment stages.

May you suggest some popular hiking / survival brands, sites or influencers to target in a new campaign? Thanks for your input.

There is a limited amount for this. To get the 12 free units people must sign-up, share and pre-order a 12 pack once it is live.

Doing 6 packs would be a nightmare from a logistics standpoint as our consumer bag is 12 count.

If you want to look for targeting interest you should go to audience insight. FB gives you everything that you need.
You have the tool inside your ads manager .
Here's a quick video how to use it ( i know how to use it i searched a tutorial on youtube , not sure how good it is)
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHKoK6V3XBQ

You start with a broad keyword like survival,
and you drill down to the high affinity ( be aware that not all the interest that you see are available for targeting) Cattura.PNG

go for website that sells stuff in the survival niche , influencer/celebrities. magazine and open the pages to see if they are inherent to the niche.

You can also flex targeting so in ads set you can use an AND statement to drill down to super targeted ads
Like people who like survival skill AND survivalkit.com for example. Just double check that the audience is big enough otherwise your CPM ( cost per thousand impression goes to the roof.

Hope that it helps.
Good luck[/QUOTE]

You cant create a lookalike from pixel events. That was possible in the past with the old conversion pixel but not with the current version of the facebook pixel.

The people that enter their email have to land on a "thanks for entering your email" page, like satisbite.com/thanks-for-email. This is the page where you fire the "addemail" event, too.

Then create the custom audience for all people that "visited specific pages" with url containing "thanks-for-email". Once that custom audience is big enough (i think 100 or 1000 people, not sure) you can use it as seed for a lookalike.

You could also fire an additional pageview "thanks-for-email" if you have an ajax setup for the signup and dont want the thank you page, but that would be too technical to elaborate here.

Btw: Great idea but looks like pretty hard execution. Good luck!

Confirming:

1. I create a custom audience from event ''add email'', like this:
Screen-Shot-2017-03-21-at-12.16.45-1.png

2. It will show up here once it has enough data:

Screen-Shot-2017-03-21-at-12.13.07.png

Then I can created a lookalike based on: people who viewed the site and entered email.

Is this correct? Thanks for your input by the way.

Yes, but in this setup you can remove the top part for "url equals satisbite.com". The Event = AddEmail is enough. I forgot that its already possible to create custom audience from events :).

Done. I could create a lookalike audience from the add email event with around 100 submissions. Ads are running, will let you know the results.

What I meant was: we decided not to post nutritionals because at the end if we can put more money into R&D (we have spent all seed money in lab time, bio-tech consultants and equipment) we could (for example) up the amount of carbs from 20 to 25 and protein from 18 to 24g to say something. Do you suggest we post the current nutritionals and then deliver something with more nutrients? We will never deliver less.

We will add ingredients for sure when I update the site, should be done around midnight CET.

Also, natural means nothing, but we have adquired all materials from a gluten free , organic and non GMO certified vendor in the USA. Not that it is our target market but as MJ said earlier, wouldn't want to lose a niche because we use non natural stuff.
I don't think it could be a problem the list of ingredient, unless you are using something very unusual or "secret", bread is always made of flour water and yeast, but the hands that blend the simple ingredients can make the difference between heaven or bleah! And in Italy you cannot sell food without the list of ingredients.

@juanalou, congratulations on taking the first few steps on starting-up your own business. I hope to be there myself in the next few years.

I am not involved in this area of business at all, but I do buy lots of health food items and have been looking for a meal-replacement item for some time now... I've tried a lot of the liquid items such as Soylent, Orgain, etc. I feel like there is market for a non-liquid meal replacement, at least that is something I have been interested in. As a potential customer I thought I would throw some comments out there... keep in mind I am but one person and who knows what might be on the mind of your other customers....

  • I like the website layout, it looks very professional.
  • I was put-off when I saw the nutrition information that you have listed. Just in my head I am thinking with the protein and carb numbers you are citing there this puts you in the realm of Greek Yogurt if I am not mistaken. While that is great, that is a rather high in protein food, getting to a real meal replacement is at a whole other level. So then it makes me wonder if this really is a meal replacement... for example I need about 2,200 kcal per day to not feel like total crap. Right off the bat I am wondering if I would need to eat ten bags of this stuff per day, if I were really trying to live off of it. Since I am thinking about that, I am now thinking that I maybe don't want to pursue this any further in the first few seconds of visiting your website.
  • On that same subject, I saw that you replied to someone and said you don't have a product so you don't have nutritional info yet. I agree in that circumstance you probably do not want to list something that could be inaccurate. On the other hand there has got to be some way for you to address my last bullet... perhaps think of some way to do that?
  • I like the gluten free, non-GMO status. I am guessing your market is going to find that important.
  • I don't like the soy products are included.
  • Somewhere in here you mentioned selling at grocery stores... I am not sure why you would want to do that, that is a cut-throat business. Why wouldn't you just try to carve out an online space?
  • 12 units free... did you do any cost-benefit analysis... how did you arrive at that number? It just strikes me as overly-generous no matter what kind of hoops someone has to go through to get it?
  • On that same subject (the 12 freebies... you mentioned elsewhere that there were some limitations there), I see the asterisk at the end of your sentence, but I don't see anything indicating what that means on your page. Maybe I missed it. I should point out in my younger days, when I was kind of a jerk, I once made a large retail electronics chain give me a very expensive stereo receiver for $20 because they had mislabeled it (leaving off a few zeroes) and I pointed out they had to give it to me otherwise it was false advertising per laws here in the US. They did in fact sell it to me for $20. I don't know if an asterisk really protects you... might want to chat it over with someone who knows this market, the law, etc. as I do not. Just a red-flag no-one else has mentioned that I thought I would point out.
I'm going to follow this thread... I am really curious to see how things work out. It's something I would buy anyway. Good luck!

Hell yeah, they're vegan! :) I've never dropped my email for a food product but hell, you got mine!

That said, the vegan label is an important and pesky one!

Watch out for minor (but frequent) animal based additives like casein, L-Cysteine, whey, vitamin D3, etc.

There are, to my knowledge, alternatives that are equally, if not more, effective at a competitive cost. :)

If you're interested in sourcing, any replacements for the above, I'd be happy to connect you with someone.

Here's my honest opinion.

On your website you mention: No time to eat? Just grab a Satisbite!

1) I really don't see how eating a whole bag of chips will save me more time than taking a meal replacement drink. Maybe what you wanted to say was that it will save you time from prepping meals, which brings me to my second point.

2) You mention the macros on your website: 18g protein, 20g carbs, 8g fat. Is this 1 whole bag or a certain serving size? If this is one whole bag, I would assume that's around 150-250 calories. Is that really sufficient for a meal replacement? There's this new meal replacement drink out in Asia, similar to soylent. It's around 80g in powder weight and you just add water. Macros are: 54g of carbs, 22g protein, 10g fat summing to around 325 calories. See the difference? I rather take that small drink, get almost 1.5x the calories, and more macros than eating 1 whole bag of chips. Brings me to my third point.

3) What makes meal replacement's like Soylent successful? Convenience without compromising nutrition. By looking at your pictures on your website, the bags look big. Now I'm assuming it's not to scale, but how can you fit enough servings into those small 30g chip bags to make this a meal replacement? If you can't, is carrying around a big bag of chips really convenient? What if I want a meal replacement whilst outside? Can I fit this bag of chips in my bag at school? In my bag going to the gym? Will it be more convenient for me to take this to work instead of a small bottle? If I'm at home, why don't I just make a real meal for myself? Save time? But by the time I finish the bag of chips I could've probably whipped up a quick chicken burger in the oven. See my point?

Not saying this won't work, as I believe you can make it work with some adjustments, but just pointing out some things I believe you should really take a look at.

I say keep pursuing email addresses. Weird. I've seen several comments made by folks stating... They wouldn't give up their email for food products. Have they never ordered pizza, Chinese, groceries online? I'd say that puts them in the minority of the group you want to target. Btw, you have to list your ingredients. Even if it changes, it gives you another chance to "touch" your potential customers by reaching out and letting them know of the change. This can only help to develop a loyal following. Good luck.

  • You are correct about nutritionals in our current formula, a 500 cal meal is practically imposible to fit in 1.5oz of chips. Today we started experimenting with algae and got some good results, but the taste can be off-putting to some. Will keep you updated on this.
  • As I've said before, these values are not final, as we continue to experiment in the lab. Anyway, we've had test subjects of all sizes and activity ranges, and the results have been good. People feel full for hours and it does it's job as a meal replacement.
  • This product is not intended to replace food, it's a fix for those days where you just cant find the time to eat.
  • Thanks about the asterisk, our dev forgot that very important part, it is now fixed.

1. We are not seeking to replace in the MR drink segment. This is an alternative for people who don't like liquid diets be it for taste or delivery system.
2,3. Bags are 146 x 203 mm, 42.5g weight. Should fit anywhere. Again, not looking to replace liquid MR.

I say keep pursuing email addresses. Weird. I've seen several comments made by folks stating... They wouldn't give up their email for food products. Here is an idea

Sponsor some youtube, Instagram personalities?

Targeted audience, and it shouldn't cost too much

Alright pal, it's been a month since you posted this. Update me! I want some chips! :)
Hi!
Updates:
We decided to ditch the Kickstarter for a few reasons:
  • Our product isn't that suited for a crowdfunding campaign on either indiegogo or kickstarter. Food projects just don't have that much traction. We did an extensive research and the numbers just don't work
  • As some of you mentioned, it isn't worth it to pay up to 10% in fees when you have to bring your own traffic. Bringing traffic to our own e-commerce website is better. We had to ask for 30k more than we needed to get the product at a cheaper price, give out free units and pay all the fees. It just didn't make sense. 60k for a food project is unheard of (except for Soylent of course, but the odds are not on our side.)
  • We will roll out pre-orders this week through our own e-commerce website.
  • We started rolling adds in the EU and there's quite a bit of demand. The response was way better than US/CA so our marketing efforts are going towards this market. Won't ditch the USA tho.
So I will let you know when pre-orders are up and how everything goes from there. Have a nice sunday all!

I haven't read the whole thread, but took a look at your website and product. Great job on the website and packaging design - very appealing!

In terms of marketing, I highly recommend Instagram. You can scale it very quickly by utilizing health/nutrition/foodie influencers and there are plenty! The cost for sponsored posts are relatively cheap in comparison to FB, etc. I did a thread on Instagram in the past which might be helpful.

Have you considered running a Free + Shipping offer to at least cover your costs? Might be worth testing.

Good luck!

That said, the vegan label is an important and pesky one!

Watch out for minor (but frequent) animal based additives like casein, L-Cysteine, whey, vitamin D3, etc.

There are even vegan sources of D3 (Lichen, synthetic etc.) and L-Cysteine (whole wheats, walnuts, soy) :)

Everything is ready. Been evaluating different term sheets, once this is decided, we'll proceed with launch.
Will keep you updated!
Woot woot! This is awesome. I'm very excited to try a bag.

Aside from that - if you can do a good job of bootstrapping yourself so you don't get eaten alive, this product has some nice Shark Tank potential. I could also see future deals with GNC/Starbucks/Jamba Juice.
