Been doing IF for years now. Eating has been erratic especially during the pandemic.

My gym opened up finally and I went to workout yesterday. When I got on the scale my weight was the exact same

I believe that fasting for once in a week rejuvenates the body and increases its core strength. This fasting includes drinking boiled water up till in the evening and for the rest of days eating only till 7 in the evening. We have been doing this since long and it has really helped in gaining the extra strength and fitness.

I think skipping breakfast works pretty good, doing the hardest part of your day first thing in the morning is optimal imo.

I've dropped about 40 pounds lately from skipping some meals, def worth a try.

Also if you are travelling around whether it be buisness or free time activites, it's really convenient to just skip eating.

Combo of IF and watching macros helped me lose 100lbs.

For the first few months just doing 16:8, I effortlessly lost 35lbs, it was great.
Switched to omad and it sort of worked, lost about another 30lbs but hovered there for a year or so.

During corona, said "fug it" and started prioritizing protein instead of fat and purchased a standing desk. Also got into supps like berberine and ALA.
I can see my abs for the first time in my life now, good feeling.
Switched back to 18:6 so I can eat two protein meals on workout days for better protein synthesis.
We'll see how this goes.

We have become consumed with food.

We are addicted not for nourishment, but for taste...

and usually the sweeter the better.

Some of us really do think we are 'starving' if we go without food for 8 hours.

We feed on bio-engineered products rather than the fruit of the earth.

We would rather wait in line at the Golden Arches than to arch our back to pick home grown vegetables.

We would rather spend $100 a month on snacks and sodas than a gym membership.

And then we would rather take a pill between gulps of soda prescribed to us for weight loss than feel the pain (and joy) of stretching and breathing and lifting.

We would rather take an antidote than stop the obsession and craving.

We have all been fed by branding rather than whats on the back of the label.

I think what I just ate turned me unusually negative...
This is so true...

Personally, I've noticed that when I was the least happy, that's when I would eat the most food

Constant eating in my opinion is a sign to reevaluate yourself to find out how to become happy so that you're satisfied with life instead of the little dopamine hit from junk food.

When junk food becomes the only thing that creates happiness in our lives, it ruins everything.

Just curious if anyone else has been IF for any period of time.

If so, what days and how do you fast…
Been IF for years, really works for me.

Very loose with it, though—basically just never eat breakfast and stretch the fast out with oat milk coffee when I start to get hungry, then break fast for real with a green smoothie.

Following that I’ll eat either one or two meals depending on time, activity level.

I do it every Monday from 16hours. minimum. I sometimes pushed up to 24 and 48 hours to try. It's really interesting to push your comfort zone and learn to control yourself. However, pay attention to weight loss. I do a lot of sport and I have no weight to lose, and I must have lost between 1 and 2kg in 48 hours. For me, to do a little physical and mental cleansing, the best remains 16 to 24 hours. Then why not push it to 48 hours from time to time but be careful.

This happens for me as well when I fast longer than 24 hours, but I think it's mostly water being flushed from the system due to glycogen depletion and a different electrolytes status.

Yes, I think so too. The young intermittent deserves to be better known given all his benefits

Day 3 here of 16 hours between meals fasting. Will go for 24 hours in June again. Love what fasting does for my body.

In case someone missed it, there's a thread where you can do longer fasts with fellow Fastlaners:

In the past we already did two 3-day fasts there.

I'm currently doing a 40-hour fast in case anyone wants to join.

Interesting thread! Something to add is that there's some research suggesting that IF improves overall hormone levels and increases growth hormone and testosterone specifically. Have been doing it for a few years now on and off.

@Antifragile, thought you mind find this interesting:

I recently did a 11.6 km run in the morning (took me 74 minutes) and an hour later started swimming and did a 4.2 km swim in 116 minutes. So in total that was over 3 hours of endurance exercise on no food. Despite not eating anything I didn't run out of energy and didn't feel like eating immediately afterward.

It seems like maybe my experience with fasting made me more adapted to burning fat as most resources say that such long exercise would deplete my glycogen stores. I definitely had to burn at least 2,000 calories (I do open water swimming and the water wasn't super warm).

I have recently started running on the treadmill first thing in the morning for an hour or so on no food.

I have found the same thing with re to food afterwards.

One hour is definitely not enough to feel this. From what I've read usually it has to be at least two hours (of relatively high intensity).

Now that I think about it, I remember I once went on a bike ride for like 5 hours (it was my only 100 km bike ride so far in my life) and as far as I remember it was on an empty stomach as well. I had no issues either and that was a few years ago.

Are you referring to glycogen depletion / entering ketosis?
It depends on what your diet looks like. If you run on carbs, it's a few days of fasted exercise. If you're already on a ketogenic diet, you can deplete all your glycogen after one training session.

Keto-adapted people supposedly don't hit the wall because their bodies are very efficient at burning stored body fat (over carbs delivered every hour).

Those that are fully adapted to burning fat can generate an endless supply of carbs on demand through gluconeogenesis. As you've said, this effectively makes them go forever without hitting any wall or threshold when the sugar runs out.

Dr. Shawn Baker, which has been following a carnivore diet for years, can increase his blood sugar levels on demand just by thinking about exercising.

They should have called it "Intermittent Feeding" instead of "Intermittent Fasting". It would sound like a series of rewards, instead of a series of punishments.

If you look at fasting as a series of punishments, this isn't for you.

I have done maybe one day of IF in my life, and I remember feeling absolutely great during it.
It feels nice that there are others who also see the benefits of it.

I read about intermittent fasting and I know that it has become a trend. It is supposed to be a good decision to try it as it helps boost metabolism, lower insulin levels, and may even add years to your life. The only thing that worries me is whether I can take vitamins when fasting. From what I read, they don't break the fast, but taking them on an empty stomach can be deleterious to health. Does anyone have any experience?
It makes more sense to take your vitamins with your meals. Or better yet, make the meals nutritious enough so that you won't need any more vitamins.

Nothing beats natural sources of micronutrients - they have the best absorption and bioavailability.

I should say, I was skeptical about intermittet fasting, but my sister lost weight with its help, so I changed my mind.
Now I'm going to give it a try. Any tips for a beginner?
Hey I am new around here just getting a feel for the Forum however this is something I know a lot about.

A tip I would ask myself as a beginner is ask yourself, Why am I intermittent fasting. Is it for weight loss, change of body composition, to loose belly fat?

This way you can structure your fasting and eating window accordingly. The standard fast most people do is a 8:16 which is eat for 8 hours and fast for 16. Keep in mind that those 16 hours 8 of them will be while sleeping so its only really 8 hours.

Skipping breakfast helps, and if your a coffee drinker you'll have to go black no sugar or cream as this will break your fast otherwise.

The main thing you're doing is trying to control insulin spikes. Which is usually from consuming starchy carby foods and sugars.

Anywhoo im rambling. To answer your question start with DR Bergs videos on youtube. Not sure if he's been mentioned further up on this thread.

He is where I learned all this stuff. He breaks down a few different protocols and he's got multiple videos. His videos cover not only how to fast but what/how to eat during the feeding window.

He is a big proponent of following a Keto genic high fat, lower carb, no sugar diet and eating only 1-3 times during your fasting window. With no snacking.

This way you only get 3 insulin spikes rather than 6 or 7 every time you eat and with snacking through out the day. Also by consuming healthy fats instead of carbs/sugars you can fast longer as you don't crave food when consuming fats..

Cravings are just your body wanting more sugar essentially and starchy carbs.. which is also sugar.

Hopefully this helps and I didn't ramble.

Let me know if you have any questions. I am not sure if you can link youtube videos in the forum or not so I am not going to link to Dr Bergs stuff. As i'm still new.

Thanks

I pulled out my old diet plan which I bought in 2011 which actually worked quite well at the time. In 2023 it worked even better - the way it works - they take your blood sample(I do not want to name the company here) and you get actually a fully adjusted individual plan based on protein such es cheese, tofu, chicken etc and and vegetables plus a bit of fruits(only selected fruits such as apple) you need to eat 3 times a day pause 5 hours eat no later than 09:00 PM drink a lot of water (recommended for me was 4 Litre). The amount of food is really little but because of the 3 times it works .. and the kicker was going on the indoor bike directly after dinner take a shower and go to sleep - result was 30 kg's (66 pounds) in 15 weeks. You have to really feel the deficit between calories you eat and calories you burn as simple as that. Actually I felt like a newborn after 4 months. A friend of mine annoyed me so much I had to giver my plan and she also lost 22,5 kg (49 pounds) this year and receives compliments every day - however it is important to be able to focus for some time otherwise I think this does not work.

I have been doing it for 3-4 months (now I stopped it actually).

I have never felt worse in my life. Lack of mental capacity, I nearly fainted 4 times when I did agricultural hard working stuff (most days). Otherwise, I just feel dizzy and lack energy until 10 AM when I feel extreme hunger.

Since I got back at my breakfast, eating oats or eggs, I regained my energy and can work mentally and physically.

I always had low sugar levels, I rarely eat sweets. Also, I have 11-12-13% body fat, mostly ectomorphic.
