^^ What he said.

At the VERY least, you can get a part time job where you're allowed downtime, and make up the difference with a side hustle.

I worked in Tech Support for 1.5 years at $9/h, 20 hours a week.

When we didn't have any support requests coming in, we were allowed to work on whatever we wanted, even on the clock.

While everyone else was dicking around on Facebook during downtime, I was reading and working on business.

The same can be done (I imagine) for jobs like a front desk receptionist at a hotel where there's lots of downtime.

So if you're going to get a job, at least choose something that 1: Isn't mentally draining/leaves you exhausted and 2: Allows a lot of downtime.

Who knows. You might be able to build a business straight from your desk at work.

1) Get a job.
Damn this is coming from the man himself I remember you saying in Unscripted about if you don't have any ideas you should get a job I kinda just said ummm this doesn't apply to me.

Lol you talk about that also in your book about the statistics like "100% of people will die" & people are like "umm that doesn't apply to me I'm a live forever".(not your exact words)

Thanks @MJ DeMarco @JAJT

Don't take this the wrong way, but this is the thought process of a child who has yet to start their adult life.
I actually started thinking like that because of my dad he told me to focus on 2 things fitness & going back to school. I have been focusing more on my fitness but the college thing not so much I don't want to take on anymore debt for a degree I most likely will never use. In his eyes if I get a job I'm going to make a little money there & grow content with that & not want to improve myself. I guess he's talking from experience & what he sees happening with my step sisters but f him man its my life. I'm different not special lol I will most definitely start applying for jobs asap

Hi,

I was lying in my bed rolled up like a lovely cinnamon bun and reading through forum posts and stumbled on yours. I immediately jumped out of my bed into a room full of darkness and cold so I could write a reply to you. Yes, it's that serious, so pay some attention to what I got to say!

Usually I don't post figures, but this forum is like my family so let's roll...

I started working at 14, while studying in secondary school. At 19 I got accepted into University, I continued working throughout it. I left University at 22 and jumped into a Full Time employment until 23. I managed to put aside roughly €80k. I was independent, relatively wealthy by most people's standards and felt great...

At 23 I've invested €20k into my first venture. Then another €20k. And another...until my funds had completely dried out. My entire almost 10 year savings dried out in roughly a year...how does it sound? Pretty f*cked up I guess. Listen what happened next...

A guy with a €80k bank balance and good career/academic track record turned into a bum due to depression. I was living off welfare for some time. Hard working folks were paying for my a$$ lying in bed almost entire year. Single mother, struggling to take care of her child was paying for my FAT DEPRESSED a$$ lying in bed... and you know what? I refused to get a job. Wanna hear what followed next? Bring out children of your room and skip the next step if you have heart problems my friend...

I got swallowed into a darkness. Everyday became a day of helplessness. I felt guilty of living off welfare, but was too weak to stand up on my feet. I felt like ending my life and I tried. I had cut my wrists wide open and waited for it all to end. But it didn't (otherwise I wouldn't be posting here). I came back from hospital and the trip into F*ckMe land continued. For almost entire time living off welfare I was in agony. I felt like a piece of shit for living at my mom's and not contributing as much as I could've if I worked somewhere and tried to steer myself onto the highway again, but I didn't...

I'm literally writing this with tears in my eyes now. You could never guess how it feels turning from an independent guy with a solid sum saved to a bum who is too weak to even make his own bed and lives of hardworking people. I wanted to stand up and help, but I was too weak. I couldn't. If there's hell under the hell I was there and came back. My scars on wrists remind me of that trip to this day.

What I am trying to say is this...you're a healthy young lad with a burning desire within yourself. That's fantastic! Except one thing...don't repeat my mistakes and leave your victim mentality and prejudice at home. Get a job, preferably one in sales, marketing...or just any job! You'll be able to save a lot more cash, gonna feel hell better about yourself, and who knows what doors gonna open for you...maybe you'll find a gap in the market while working for someone and filling that single gap will result in a financial independence for the rest of your life? Get off your a$$ and get some dirt on your face my friend or you'll end up in the place I've visited once and never want to come back again in my life.

P.S. Sorry for my grammar errors. This was pretty emotional shit TBH.

Tell you what.

I need to re-activate my subscription, since it's just recently gone out. I'll buy you a 3 month subscription, too, so you can get a glimpse.

But, first, I need something from you.

Good news is, it won't cost you anything but time, of which you have more than enough, it seems.

Bad news is, you may have to interrupt your little routine and do something actionable.

I'll give you 24 hours to respond.

@papi016 This could be a massive opportunity for you to learn a lot. I suggest you follow up immediately.

Great advices, action faking is very common these day, even for myself, but you gotta do what's needed. I need more money to fulfill the need of cash for my clothing brand (to be able to not touching my savings) so i'm selling everything i can that i don't use, if it's not enough, then i gonna get a second job for that. You need CASH to expand your business.

You need to be open about getting a job, but like MJ said, getting a job doesn't mean working for someone else forever, you're mission is to work for yourself, it take time and effort but worth it.

When you have the job, listen to everything, open your eyes and try to find that gap and see how you can provide value.
It's actually simple, you just need to see the opportunity and train your creativity.

Alessio.

I really hope he doesn't pass up the offer from the guy with double his rep!

All kidding aside, DO IT. This could be life changing.

Great mentors don't present themselves very often. Even if he wants you to shine his shoes. ;)

Need is such a strong word. I know the ebay thing is about to blow up once I can afford to buy other things (Like importing from china) than the dollar store item plus my sellers limit is soon to be 10 items.

Do you mind me asking what do you do?

Lol read what you just wrote. eBay will blow up once you can afford to buy things.

Guess what, if you got a job two months ago you would have $2000 to buy the things that you can’t afford to buy right now. A job will get you to where you want to go quicker.

Now if you think that making $1100 a month will make you content then you have no business trying to start a business. What you are saying is that once you make $1100 if you were going to spend it on yourself and not buy the stuff that you wanted to buy from China that you mentioned above.

Basically you just said two things that are the exact opposite of each other, so which is the real reason?

Papi,

It sounds like you've read Unscripted , but have you read The Millionaire Fastlane yet?

I ask because MJ is the perfect example for why you need a job. He wasn't content working for someone else when he was getting started, but he did it anyway because that money gave him a foundation to work on his entrepreneurial pursuits. It just so happens that one of the jobs he worked gave him a unique insight into an opportunity that he was able to leverage into a business earning hundreds of thousands of dollars per month with a MULTI MILLION DOLLAR valuation and liquidation event!

That same MJ is here, right now, telling you that you need a job. Bro this is a sign and you need to read it!

I'm working a job I don't like atm, but it's putting a roof over my head, food on my table, and money in the bank for a rainy day. It's also giving me cash to invest in my projects. We like to rag on jobs in this forum, but they absolutely serve a purpose. If you're an entrepreneur at heart that wants more out of life you're not going to be satisfied with a $1000/month income. Or $3,000. Or $10,000. You can work a job and sell on Ebay in your off hours. Or work on a different business idea altogether.

Whatever you choose to do I wish you the best of luck.

Silly me, his business model went right over my old gray head. I must have had a senior moment.

The only senior moment you had @jon.a is imparting a moment of wisdom.;)

Serious OP, take 10 bucks next time it is doled out to you and buy a course on Udemy and learn a skill. Right now this weekend they have a sale going on. Learn a skill that can create VALUE to another human being. I'd recommend a course on Wordpress development or something similar by Ron Percival. Then after you've mastered it, walk down the street and sell yourself on building a internet presence for a small mom and pop business charging them to set up a website.

Think. You are going to need to give to get back. Your 21. It is far easier than 'working' in Afghanistan which many your age are doing.

Sorry for the rant

I've was a self-employed IT contractor from the year 2000 to 2009. I then decided to help an out of work electrician. I stumbled across a different skill that could help people more directly.

I took two jobs to reskill and get more experience. The amount I earned fell to a quarter what it was previously.

Then I went back IT contracting to bring in more revenue and bootstrap my current venture.

I've been freelancing for the last few years with my new skills, then building a small team and switching from higher paid consulting/freelancing gigs to lower paid but lower maintenance recurring-revenue clients.

The war-chest sometimes has mothballs while I make this change. That's ok. I can take a "step backwards" and be a higher paid consultant for a few gigs and bring in more revenue to fund my team.

I've always said I'd flip burgers if I had to (except it would never pay enough to keep a roof over our heads).

The easiest way for you to make money is probably to sell your time or skills.

Enjoy the journey. The fun is in the squiggly bits on the map...

Quick little update so I've been applying like crazy to all of the local jobs around my area mostly fast food joints, walmart etc. Any advice on the interview process, seeing in the past this was a major obstacle for me because I always used to not show up.

Show you will be a valuable team member. Steer clear of "what's in it for me?" stuff ... stuff like, how many breaks do I get? When is my first raise? What benefits will I get? While that is important stuff, remember, you're being hired for a purpose.

BTW, the fact that you are willing to work a fast-food job speaks volumes. To me, that's like a predictor of future success as it shows you are willing to do whatever it takes, and aren't driven primarily by ego. Kudos and high-fives to you my brotha...

Show up on time. Show you've made the effort. Have manners. Be enthusiastic. If you don't know something just say you don't know and explain how you'd find out.

They'll train you on the rest.

Exactly, even if it's not your purpose to work at McDonalds or even a cashier or anything, just stay positive, you do this with purpose, you need cashflow for your business.
I would say any job can bring you ideas, but to me been a cashier would be nice because you see a lot of people everyday and it's normally where they complain a lot. (imo)
