The Personal Development SCAM

Fair Warning!
This message may be a little long.
But you have my promise it will be well worth your time.
For some of you, this message is really going to clean your clock!
For some of you, it will open your eyes.
And you will be FREE!
Maybe for the first time in years.
Maybe for the first time ever.
About halfway through the article, we'll take a trip together down the Rabbit Hole.
IF you're brave enough...

What is the SCAM?
When Jim Rohn said "Work harder on yourself than you do on your job"
He didn't mean success could be found out there.
He meant success is already within you.
Personal development is NOT about buying
The next book
The next eBook
The next CD
The next MP3
The next course
It is NOT about watching
The next video
The next DVD
The next LIVE stream
It is NOT about attending
The next webinar
The next meeting
The next event
The next company call
Personal development IS about making the most of
What you already have
Where you already are
With what you already have
Right NOW!
True personal development is not about MORE
It's about LESS
Bruce Lee called it "hacking away at the unessentials."
Michelangelo didn't sculpt, he freed what was already in the marble.
Yoda told Luke "You must unlearn all you have learned."
I want you to understand something
This is PROFOUND
This could F.O.R.E.V.E.R change your life and your business if you get it:
As long as you keep thinking that there is something more you have to learn, you
justify to yourself your lack of action, and therefore, your lack of results.

Read that AGAIN!
Can books, events, courses, and webinars help?
YES!
If you're new, you have to start somewhere.
But if you've been doing this a while
And you're still not absolutely CRUSHING it
Another book won't help
Another course won't help
Another event won't help
Another webinar won't help
You've fallen victim to the personal development SCAM
And only YOU can free yourself.
How many times have you bought a book
Started reading it
Then stopped reading after the first chapter
Because you bought ANOTHER book?
Now apply that scenario to a new course.
You buy this life-changing material
Invested a nice chunk of change
It's going to take your business to the next level
Everything is laid out for you like a success buffet
Step by step videos
Quick action checklists
Everything you need to "get 'er done!"
You download everything and dive right in!
You watch the first video
The instructor gives you an action step
You don't do it because you think there is more to learn
You feel you have to watch every video first
You feel you have to know everything before you take action
But wait, what's that over there?
Here We Go Down The Rabbit Hole!
(Follow me if you dare!)

Is that another new course?
Hey, if I get that one too, it will help me understand this one better.
Then I can really explode my business!
Okay, just made payment and I'm downloading everything.
This is going to be so cool.
Okay, download complete.
This is exciting!
Now to watch the first video.
Wow.
That was really great.
Not going to do the action steps right now.
I'll just wait until I finish the course and do it all at once.
Yeah, that will work!
Okay, second video...
Wait, what's that on my Facebook Timeline?
This webinar looks really interesting.
Maybe I should attend that before I finish the course I'm doing.
I think it will really help me understand everything better.
This webinar is awesome!
Such good ideas.
Sounds simple enough.
But wait, the speaker recommended a book.
Got to buy it!
I think it will really help.
I'll read this new book first.
Then I will finish the second course.
Then I will finish the first course.
Then I will be ready to make it happen!
Sounds good.
Okay, this first chapter is really great.
But wait.
This author mentioned a vintage book in the preface that really helped him.
Can't get it out of my mind.
Got to get that book!
I know it will help me understand the first book better.
Wow, this vintage book is really hard to find.
Took all day looking for it online and finally found it.
Spent a little more than I wanted but it's worth it.
Shipping notification says it will take a week to get here.
No problem.
It will be worth the wait.
Hey, what's that over there?
A new system?
Everything is already in place?
Hey, I can get that set up while I wait on my book!
Then, when I finish both books and both courses, I can really make this work.
Okay, spent today setting up this system.
I'm really making progress.
This is exciting!
It says to take a few small action steps but I'm going to wait.
Until I finish those 2 books.
And those other 2 courses.
Then I'll be ready!
It's a vicious cycle that NEVER ends.
It's the Personal Development SCAM!
And only YOU can save yourself.
If you keep going "down the rabbit hole"
You will never succeed
Because you will always think there's something else
Something new
Something cutting edge
You have to know first
Before you can take action
Therefore
You will NEVER take action
Your business will never grow
And you will never change
Until NOW!
Because NOW you understand
You've been scamming yourself
You got lost in the Rabbit Hole
If you're new
Seal off the Rabbit Hole now
Kill the monster while it's little
Buy that first course
Buy that first book
Attend that first webinar
But before you do ANYTHING else
DO what the material says to DO!
If you've been around a while
Look at all of the books around you
Look at all of the courses you have on the shelves
Look at all of the courses you have parked on the Internet
Look at all of the eBooks you have on your Tablet
Now seal the Rabbit Hole!
Take a solemn VOW that you will NOT buy anything new
Unless and until you use what you already have to the fullest
Until you are getting the results you want
From this moment forward, you are FREE.
I've shown you the escape route from the Rabbit Hole
From the Personal Development SCAM
From the trap
From the excuses
From the lack of results
My friend Diane Hochman says
"If you haven't gotten a new result in the last 7 days, you ain't doing the deal!"

So, do the deal.
STOP buying stuff.
Use what you ALREADY HAVE.
Commit to getting a new result this week.
Something
Anything
That only ACTION will produce
If you will DO that simple thing
Not only will you be forever FREE from the Rabbit Hole
You will be well on your way to unleashing the greatness inside
That will change you
That will change the world.

Today, we have so many books/courses/videos/seminars on how to get rich.

But lately I have been thinking, how did guys like Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, Henry Ford get super rich, in times when there were no books or courses on how to get rich.

Something to think about.

@Kak said it best:

If you want personal success like making more money. Why spending time with personal development?

Are these real questions?

Yes if you want to make money you also need to work on yourself.

That is super basic.

If you don't think you need to work on (and learn about) goal setting, motivation, discipline, habits then prepare to get absolutely destroyed in business by those who have been working hard to dial those areas in.

Meanwhile Dan the man is happy to sell courses himself... The Official Website of Dan Pena. Founder of QLA Methodology | Dan Pena

But those are the real success courses I am sure lol

This dude just has his own unique "shout and curse" anti-guru marketing angle.

---

I think a lot of people are being sold HEAVY on "not being sold".

Someone comes in telling you that you DONT need to do anything or invest anything so they can gain trust.

Hey man you don't need any of this success stuff - you're already good enough to get exactly what you want

Then once they have your trust they sell you on their "anti" success system.

Tons of top gurus do this. They know their market is scared of being sold yet another useless course or seminar so they start off telling you that you don't need to buy ANYTHING. Its all inside you already bro.

If they can sell you on that then they got you.

(paging guru hunter @Lex DeVille)

---

As has been said by @MJ DeMarco and many others on here - focus on learning specific knowledge while taking action that is relevant to the stage you are at.

MJ said this before: "Read books that solve your problems". Meaning, if you have the following books on your shelf: TMF , UNSCRIPTED , and The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster (by Darren Hardy) - there's no need to purchase more books regarding entrepreneurship. Why? Because you will find nothing new on the subject that alter your life forever. Three books on the same topic are quite enough to help you solve the problem that sits in front of your face.

The funny thing is, if you would only read more books after you have applied everything that is the The Millionaire Fastlane and in Unscripted you would likely be doing so good you would hardly need to read any more books on success.

Don't read books was NOT my message.

Don't just keep on reading without action, was the message.

In case I wasn't clear.

Fair enough - didn’t mean to misquote you.

I was more directing that rant at the “anti books/courses” people in general.

Seems to be a reaction to the amount of spammy courses being pushed but at the same time going the other extreme is not a great move either. Books are possibly the highest ROI you can make in yourself.

Same with courses - you got $10 courses these days that can show you everything you need to know about using a software or how to design X. It’s pretty amazing.

Sure there is some “noise” right now when it comes to picking the right course or book but at the same time the ability to learn has never been so accessible.

I think it’s a first world problem to complain about spammy courses when many parts of the world (and of course previous generations) had very little or no access to education.

Cut through the noise and invest in yourself with great specific knowledge to move yourself forward. Don’t let shady marketers turn you off from picking up a book or learning a new skill.

But lately I have been thinking, how did guys like Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, Henry Ford get super rich, in times when there were no books or courses on how to get rich.

Carnegie built over 2500 libraries after acquiring his wealth. He saw reading and access to knowledge as one of the best ways to give back.

Lots of guys on here throwing out the baby with the bath water. “There is some annoying marketer selling me courses on Fb... so I’m not going to read ANY BOOKS”.

Your loss. Books and specific training is the the worlds easiest way to become and expert and get the knowledge you need to succeed. You can pick (starting with just a few dollars) a book with content that people only a few years ago would never have had access to.

It’s EASY to avoid to terrible courses and gurus. But to stop reading and learning from others altogether? Come on.

If you can’t build on what others have already learned and are willing to share you are never going to be able to compete with those who did.

If you see education as a major risk/cost it’s probably cause you are thinking way too small. Once you start making large sales and know what sources to trust a book or a course is a small price to pay for an even greater winners edge.

Is every book or course a winner? Of course not - but overall you learn and improve and it compounds over the years.

Very insightful stuff in this thread. Joined a few days ago with a low self-esteem even though TMF got me pumped. Mental fortitude is so important. Learning a lot in this forum; so glad I joined. As MJ mentions in TMF , the content in the scams don't work, but selling them does. So glad to have a greater vision now!

While I don't disagree with anything said above, for me, personal development is a hobby. I don't replace it with work.

Yes, if you're looking for some specific answers, then sure, read a few books and be done.

But I don't think there's an end to personal development ever (even if you could live forever).

Yeah I agree. I've been a bit lost within the past few months and so I decided to consume all types of learning material from all types of "gurus".

Well... Here I am -- Still the same as before except now with a lot more knowledge on what doesn't work.

But listen, self-education is def something that we all need. But, action is the only way we get where we want to go.

Action IS the key to self-development.

Good post!

But lately I have been thinking, how did guys like Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, Henry Ford get super rich, in times when there were no books or courses on how to get rich.

Something to think about.

To give the actual answer...

Major Anderson, of Revolutionary War fame, owned a
library. He was an unselfish man who opened his library to the
young men of the area who wanted to acquire more knowledge.
One of the young boys who came to Major Anderson’s home every
Saturday morning was a Scottish lad who was extremely
grateful for the opportunity to spend the day reading. Apparent-
ly, he learned a great deal in the process, because Andrew
Carnegie went on to become one of the most productive and
wealthy men America has ever produced.
He created forty-three
millionaires when millionaires were truly rare individuals.
Carnegie passed this kindness on in another way. He created the
Carnegie Libraries all over the United States. Untold thousands
of people still benefit from his generosity.
(Quote from "See you at the top" by Zig Ziglar)

That is back in the late 1700s.

People have been using books to get rich for a long, long time.

As for "courses" they took action and learned on the job from those who had done it before.

Unfortunately, only a handful of Personal Development guru's are really all out, meaning would give everything, to help out.

I also don't think majority of them are there to scam you (or even think "I'm gonna write a book, do a seminar to scam people!" but some are), some are out there just to share their message, experience and thinks that the time they are allotting (airtime) has a cost value attached to it.

It's now up to the individual to put down the book and take action. That's where forums like this comes in. They support and they make you take action.

Haven't read The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster yet, I'm sure it's awesome and I do agree, TMF and Unscripted are books that would lead to a path of success. Lucky are those who found the books early, but what about those who doesn't know about the book? It may take them a couple of books, seminars, entrep videos, etc...before finally getting their hands to this book. ;)

Yeah. Totally agree, and I must admit I am guilty of this as well. I've been into personal development books, youtube channels etc for more than 2 years.

It's not a bad thing. But it's like Tyler Durden once said:
"Personal development is mental masturbation."

You want to solve problem A, you look for a way to solve problem A by books.
Apply this book for X amount of time, but REALLY apply it. Only after that can you start a new one.
No other book is going to solve your problems if you're not applying it anyways.
That's one of the only reasons why you should buy books.

I think action is more important than feeling, but feeling isolated or weak or frustrated has a negative impact on anyone. The personal development industry is led by a few compassionate and loving souls with extraordinary levels of energy and business savvy. Their pep talks can completely change negative moods. But it is up to you to determine the minimum dosage of feel-good learning that that kicks you into gear or relieves discomfort without preventing action. I am coming out of a six-year period in which I experienced 8 out of the 10 top negative events that human beings can experience in life. Listening to a half hour of top level business advice daily is a sweet experience and currently essential for my peace of mind.
Wow, thanks for resonding to my post. Yea, I don't know if it's because I'm a woman and my emotions are stronger (or that could just be me shifting blame onto my gender as I know there are plenty of men who have strong[er] emotions though they may be channeled differently). Gender is not my point though. Ignoring or denying our emotions I don't think is the answer either.

I don't know what your top 10 negative things are, but I've been through hell myself, one being abuse. And I've talked to "professionals" who've tried to help, but at the end of the day, it's me that's left. And using MJ's "F*ck This" mentality (I'm currently reading UNSCRIPTED ), my middle finger shoots up to those that are so damn negative and I'm not afraid to look 'em dead in the eye while doing so. So I joined this forum hoping for positive encouragement and it's been good so far.

But someone tried to scam me with his F*cking million dollar internet business yesterday. Beware. I still believe that a lot of good is in this forum though.

Maybe I give off a vulnerable vibe because I'm honest and that makes me easy prey to scammers. Shit, I even said I have low-self esteem here. So I've been selective of what I post here because you never know who's behind the screen: scammers. They make millions. But I believe that goes against MJ's Fastlane philosophy, if I'm not mistaken, since he addresses helping mankind and solving problems and needs instead of focusing on money first. I don't know how scamming people equates to helping mankind.

Anyway, if you're still reading, this is the first long post I've written since joining this forum. If my words here helped you, that's great. If not, then I still wish you goodness. I know it sounds so cliche to "be more positive", but when you're going through hell, I think we really need make extra effort to be positive and hopeful. Life is too short to let negative people (sidewalkers, slowlaners, blind AF MFs, and maybe even some Fastlaners who think they have it all figured out) bring you down. I refuse to be victimized. Life can be beautiful.

I'm glad you have an outlet to gain peace of mind. Keep reading MJ's books if you haven't yet. Reread them even. I know execution and putting things into action is all the buzz around here, but you first have to deal with the reality you're facing. Focus razor sharp and take it one step at a time, one day at a time.

Yes. Bingo.

The market-savvy ironic-hipster stereotypes haunting Reddit think they can see through all the marketing techniques.

They don't fall for any of that emotion-tapping identity-leading stuff...

...until the emotions and identities the sales letter taps belong to the market-savvy ironic hipster stereotypes haunting Reddit.

You ever hear that old saw about how the more intelligent and skeptical person is EASIER to sell to than the dimmer bulbs? Here's why.

Most self-help books are published with the aim to breed info-junkies hungry for the next hack, shortcut, silver bullet.

They are people looking for that instant fix that will change their lives at the snap of fingers -- like a deus ex machina appearing from the blue skies that finally makes everything effortless and easy. (Which never happens.)

Only self-help book that actually helped me (and I've read A LOT) is a little collection of essays titled The Art of Taking Action by Gregg Krech.

It's basically Eastern psychology's take on defeating inaction by detaching yourself from thoughts and emotions instead of 'solving' them.

It worked wonderfully to overcome my crippling procrastination and made me realize there is no 'secret' to productivity. Might do a summary post on it as I think it will help a lot of people on here.

Long but true.
If you don't know what you're doing then self-improvement can trigger some sort of chain reaction. Happened to me a lot. Posts after Posts. Videos after videos. Courses after courses. And ultimately stress and anxiety for not seeing any change after "working hard".

Movement matters. If I'm thirsty I'll need to find water, walk to the fridge, and drink it.
No point in looping endlessly over the "finding" part.

I have been thinking the same! People climbed the mountain of success and greatness coming from the deepest valleys without ever having personal development help.

That's because success only has had one formula, consistency through passion.

But hey, that's just a theory.

They just did what they had in mind. Not to say they blindly followed their thoughts. But, in my opinion, they knew that to figure something out you have to do more of that something.

I hate personal development scams. 90 percent of personal development is doing: making the hard, repetitive steps to be better even if you can't personally see results. It usually takes action, and results in hearing from others that we are making any progress. Very little of it involves thinking/visualizing the change.

Brilliant post. Guilty as charged. For too many people is action faking - it becomes and end unto itself, rather than a means to an end.
The Personal Development SCAM

Fair Warning!
This message may be a little long.
But you have my promise it will be well worth your time.
For some of you, this message is really going to clean your clock!
For some of you, it will open your eyes.
And you will be FREE!
Maybe for the first time in years.
Maybe for the first time ever.
About halfway through the article, we'll take a trip together down the Rabbit Hole.
IF you're brave enough...

What is the SCAM?
When Jim Rohn said "Work harder on yourself than you do on your job"
He didn't mean success could be found out there.
He meant success is already within you.
Personal development is NOT about buying
The next book
The next eBook
The next CD
The next MP3
The next course
It is NOT about watching
The next video
The next DVD
The next LIVE stream
It is NOT about attending
The next webinar
The next meeting
The next event
The next company call
Personal development IS about making the most of
What you already have
Where you already are
With what you already have
Right NOW!
True personal development is not about MORE
It's about LESS
Bruce Lee called it "hacking away at the unessentials."
Michelangelo didn't sculpt, he freed what was already in the marble.
Yoda told Luke "You must unlearn all you have learned."
I want you to understand something
This is PROFOUND
This could F.O.R.E.V.E.R change your life and your business if you get it:
As long as you keep thinking that there is something more you have to learn, you
justify to yourself your lack of action, and therefore, your lack of results.

Read that AGAIN!
Can books, events, courses, and webinars help?
YES!
If you're new, you have to start somewhere.
But if you've been doing this a while
And you're still not absolutely CRUSHING it

I believe that Self Development is about Hacking Yourself.
How you do this may be from reading, podcasts, events, listening to Tony Robbins, get up at 5am..
You get educated and empowered by various things..

But it comes back to YOU.
