So I went to this theme park showcasing local legends, mostly focused on witches.

And I left completely shaken, embarrased by myself, sick to my stomach, and almost puked the next morning after waking up.

As a final attraction of the exhibition, there was a VR experience that allowed you to fly on a broom like a witch over the local mountainous landscape. The seat moved and tilted along with what was shown in the headset.

You started in a cave, narrowly flying between stalactites and stalagmites, then went out into the forest and wooooo, you flew off a mountain with a few hundred meters (1500 ft) drop below you. Then some local peasants spotted you and started shooting arrows at you, so you had to do some crazy aerial aerobatics to avoid the arrows. Then there was another lightning fast flight over the mountains with some spinning and exposure to heights.

And I kid you not, I was F*cking terrified even though all this time I KNEW FOR A F*ckING FACT it was just VR. I was telling myself "chill out, it's just VR," yet my brain couldn't separate it from reality. The moment when the witch tilted to the side and spiraled down to avoid the arrows (and started falling super super fast) it felt EXACTLY the same as a deep spiral in paragliding.

I have a trauma related to skydiving. This was later briefly reactivated when I tried paragliding and my pilot asked me if I wanted to experience some g-force. I agreed (to face my fear) and he proceeded to do a deep spiral that made me uncontrollably scream like a psycho (it's such an embarrasing video and the GoPro doesn't really show the fall well but F*ck it lol).

This VR fall felt EXACTLY the same even though there was no real g-force. Like a little bitch, I let out a primal groan, grabbed the seat and prepared to hit the ground while ALL THE TIME knowing it was just VR. Once the flight stabilized and the experience continued with some fast flying over mountains, embarrased, I still couldn't let go of the seat and felt physically sick because of the height.

I was this close to taking the headset off but decided I couldn't be such a bitch. I kept going until the experience mercifully ended after another minute or so.

Afterward, my face was covered in sweat and one lady was so concerned she even asked me if I was fine. I felt sick to my stomach but more importantly, I felt like a little bitch. It was just VR, yet I couldn't NOT feel the fear anyway. How was that possible?

It wasn't real, yet it was. I was still nauseous for another hour (my girlfriend felt even worse but she didn't feel scared, just super nauseous) and my head was still lightly spinning a few hours later in bed.

The next morning I woke up and ran to the bathroom immediately upon waking up because I felt I was about to puke (and I haven't puked in a decade or so).

All after a silly VR experience that took at most 3-4 minutes.

I'm now extremely concerned about the future in which VR becomes a normal part of life. This thing is super, super scary. You can tell yourself all you want that it's fake yet your brain will refuse to listen.

I had seen some videos of people acting crazy in VR headsets and I always thought these guys were nuts. I thought I was better than this. Now I'm one of them.

I can't even imagine the negative consequences of VR addiction considering how real this feels and how it F*cks up your brain. If, for example, they make hyperrealistic VR pornography, then the addiction of people who are currently addicted to pornography (regular videos or photos) will feel like a joke compared to what lies ahead. Same goes for video games vs VR games.

I, for one, am not going to try VR experiences anymore (this was my second, my first was only a little nausea-inducing but not scary).

Give me real world where at least I can be embarrased that I was scared because of a real experience lol.

We did a VR rollercoaster in a local mall

Just a headset, a moving seat, and I think it blew wind on you

A kids toy really

It was the most animated fake looking graphics ever, exactly like a kids game, like crash bandicoot on a playstation 1

The rollercoaster ride was super unrealistic, huge drops, jumps etc

And yet every minute of it felt real, my stomach dropped when the rollercoaster dropped etc

So insane

I haven't done VR since but I thought it was the coolest thing ever

Your post and conclusion makes me think Zuck will make his VR Meta thing work, I doubted him as being arrogant and thinking he could make us do what he wants us to do, live in his virtual world, but actually now after reading your post I think he's seen the real power it has on our brains and knows the potential, I think we are the naive ones to think the general public will be able to resist it
