It is surprising what one can do.
I am not recommending this but I've fasted up to 12 days straight with only juice/water/supplements and physically felt good for the most part. After 3 days there was minimal hunger pangs. Continued cardio exercising during this time. Yes, at times I felt a bit weak but other times I had greater energy, similar to what a runners high is after endorphin release.
Reason for doing it was weight loss/mental discipline/clarity. Gratifying to realize it was doable.
Again, I don't encourage this.
But I will most likely fast like this again for shorter periods as I enjoy the challenge of being able to control
my desire for food.
Masochist?
Perhaps
Unreal! 12 days straight with only juice/water/supplements and cardio to boot. What made you choose that specific time period?

I've been considering this for a while now on my own.

I've gone as long as 7, but I think I wanna push it to 14.

No real reason other than it being a challenge and I just want to see how far I can safely push it.

My biggest holdback is caffeine withdrawals that cause headaches so I think I'm gonna have to just do some excedrin pills ( replacing dr pepper ) to curb that

.
@eliquid doing seven days is also impressive. Well done on that!

From reading your post, I would say the biggest thing is that you need to get rid of the caffeine withdrawals, is cutting the caffeine out of your daily intake slowly. Are you dependent on the caffeine for energy or is it more of a comfort thing? I recently did a 10 day detox that did not allow coffee and I find that it is more of a comfort thing now and that is with working night shifts and such. I like the taste of coffee, but I am not reliant on it. Give me some more info on this one!

It's mostly because I like coffee and dr. pepper

I even drink 2-3 cups 30 minutes before bed and it doesn't impact me. I go right to bed.

I know I need to cut it out ( dr. pepper and coffee ), but it's just a habit I need to break because it's almost thoughtless when I reach for it and put it up to my mouth. It's hard to break a habit when you don't even know you are doing ( at least for me it is ) until it's too late.

About the only thing in the past that has worked is not having either in the house.

But then the wife and kids moan. Hard to balance.

One recommendation I can make is the Four Sigmatic Brand of coffee. It is a mushroom based coffee that apparently does not have caffeine. This basically allows you to have your vice, without the negative effects.

I have not tried it yet! It was recommended off of the Tim Ferriss podcast and he swears by it.

Here is a link to the website: Four Sigmatic | All Products

I definitely hear you on the minimal caffeine effects. I can also drink a cup of coffee at 6AM after a night shift and go right to sleep.

It sounds like you need to replace the coffee with some sort of other beverage. Can water do the trick? ;)

Actually, I was going for 14 days, but of all things my oldest daughter invited me over for spaghetti and having not spent anytime with her for a bit, I decided to break the fast. It didn't cause guilt or anything but ya, the food sounded good too.
I try not to allow guilt to play a part if I happen to break a fast, eat a meal, or not eat clean.
I just think it is what it is and then go right back to what I was doing before.

Also, I do drink quite a bit of coffee and for me, it has helped immensely during longer fasts. Probably not recommended by purists but oh well...

Is anyone here currently on IF/keto?

I just started again 18:6 fasting every day as well as a strict calorie deficit keto diet.
As a Personal Trainer, I always try to keep an open mind and try new things... but I don't think I can go from IF. I love it. I do the a 16:8 fast, and just always feel great.

I've also tried a combination of both before. In fact, I've done it twice.

The first time, I got in GREAT shape. I was also doing intense exercise every day, and it was a great time.. but eventually I had a few injuries compound.

The second time was HORRIBLE. I was exhausted all the time, and the meals left me feeling very bloated.

Of course, everybody is different. I'm still a bit shocked that it went in two totally different directions when I tried it, so I can't make any conclusions.

What are some good macros you try to follow if you're not doing keto?

I'm really confused as to what I'm wanting to do with my health. IF is never going to leave, but in regards to eating a healthy well rounded diet there are so many different ways industries are pulling you, I don't know what to believe anymore...

I did keto in the past. Only lasted 4 weeks but I shed 10 pounds and didn't have constant heart burn anymore. Also had great energy. But the problem is I've always loved carbs and honestly don't really want to change that. I don't know how to properly balance and I think that is failing me.

So, the "macros" question comes up a lot, and it's good that you are tracking. The thing is, I'd have to know more about you.

- Height & Weight, Age

- Activity Levels

Etc

In general, a good recommendation is to just start with a balance of 40/30/30 P/C/F.

The industry pulls in so many different ways because there are many different ways to skin a cat. But the answers are usually right in front of you, it's just the execution part that's difficult.

Try 40/30/30. If you are trying to lose weight, then input your stats into a calorie calculator and see how your body responds. Adjust calories up or down by around ~250 after 2-3 weeks. Rinse and repeat.

I did OMAD for several weeks and I loved it!
I had a BMI scale that measured my body fat, musical mass, and such. Every day while on OMAD, I saw my body fat decrease and muscle mass increase. If it wasn't for my boyfriend not able to withstand hunger, I would have kept on going. Now I live with other people so I'm not able to do this anymore.
Another gain I received from OMAD was self-discipline. I was working at a software company and there was always free food all the time, but because I was only supposed to eat at 7pm, I had to restrain myself during the working hours. My coworkers were always taunting me with food or asking if I was hungry, but I learned the real power of my mind and will through OMAD. I affirmed to myself that I didn't feel hungry, and I didn't feel miserable or hungry at all!

I've been doing it. I don't exactly know what version I'm doing, probably something along the lines of Eat-Stop-Eat. Basically, I just impose days during my week where I don't eat for 16-24 hours.

Obviously I listen to my body and if I need energy, I'll consume a bit earlier, but I don't seem to get hungry or miss it. I actually feel like I have more energy. Not overly strict with it. I just do it where and when I can - on lower impact days or after a big weekend. I've cut back on the exercise lately, specifically the cardio. Running everyday and "overdoing it" seems to make me eat more and drain time and energy that I need to use elsewhere. I need an easier way to operate at a calorie deficit/neutral point and this seems to be working well for me.

It's cool to compare notes with other people but you really have to tweak whatever you're doing til' it works for you.

I just eat tuna salad for dinner and go to gym for 3 hours EVERY DAMN DAY to lose my weight
Ayyy, after 4 months of it, I'm nearly in good enough shape after being mega out of it

IF is good as a sort of cleansing thing for sure, but I'd not look at it alone as a weight loss tool, just more of a TWEAK
I eat only one meal a day cuz I hate cooking twice xD
And yeah helps me count calories better and counting weight loss better cuz I eat after gym, meaning that when I do weigh ins its on an empty stomach

I dreamt of eating pizza last night :(
But today is tuna salad again xD
I like tuna though

I'm going to have a go at 5:2, as it sounds doable, with the 2 days being non training days. I tested keto for some time, bloods every morning and very strict on protein ( over 60g and it would knock me out of keto) , but to be frank I find that method to be great for short periods of time, and if you need a quick result. Great for getting over plateaus. IF sounds painful...I love food and enjoying eating too much! I also believe in finding something that is sustainable through life, that will let you do the things you need to do. For example I Crossfit, and I found keto didn't really go well with that style of training. I like having it in my arsenal as it can be used pre holiday or for a quick shred, but longer term it totally killed my love of food - too much fat and I think the reason why it actually works is the fact is that it makes you go off food, and thus you consume less calories naturally. Just my take though. Never got the coveted "keto clarity" either. Still, I think its a useful "tool".

The 5:2 sounds like it would be sustainable without too much effort, so will have a go starting this week. I don't particularly need to lose weight, but if I drop 7lbs or so, then body weight exercises will become easier and since im currently focusing on gymnastics it makes sense to drop a bit of timber.

Has anyone implemented Bulletproof coffee into their IF routine?

I tried it and liked it, but am also following the 12PM-8PM eating period. So technically, Bulletproof coffee would be cheating the process.

If anyone ever wants to chat about IF, let me know! I've incorporated it for the last three months and it has been absolutely huge for me.

If you are on the fence of trying it or have some mental hurdles you need to get around, shoot me a message.

Some great info on this thread!!!!

I have been doing IF for about 8 months now. Years ago I did Paleo (5:2) for two years. I also dabble with Keto on/off for a while now. I know it has been said but the most important thing with all of this is that EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. I am a big proponent on what makes you feel the best. I have had great results from both of these platforms.

Currently:
I usually wake up at about 6 AM and won't have coffee until at least 90 minutes later. I have been using MTC oil and am a big fan. From there I don't have my first meal until about 12 PM. Then I usually fast until dinner (around 7 PM). I would say the biggest thing about fasting in the AM is to drink as much water as you can handle. Because I work from home I am able to spend this time (when not on the phone) doing body weight exercises (push ups, pull ups, squats and planks).

The biggest thing for me is about your baseline. You can't jump into not eating without properly eating beforehand and creating a base for your body to take from. If you are a novice and reading this stuff getting overwhelmed about which diet will work best. Start by lowering your amount of processed carbohydrates and sugar. These are the worst things for your body (in my opinion).

16:8 IF + keto for me for the majority of the year.
I am a bit lucky, my body synthesises carb pretty well. I can take a decent amount of carbs while staying in ketosis or getting back in keto after a day. Every now and then, I will take tasty but not so good for your body stuff.

During summer, I eat more carbs.

I just eat tuna salad for dinner and go to gym for 3 hours EVERY DAMN DAY to lose my weight

Isn't 3 hours too much? Your body needs to rest.

Not a big fan of counting weight. I prefer the "focus on what you eat, and eating to satiety" approach. One of my sisters dropped weight doing it after trying many different "diets". The best part: she made it a lifestyle and was not miserable. She reached her goal a while back, but still eat the same.

There is also much more to IF than losing weight. Even more so if you do it earlier in the day.

Has anyone implemented Bulletproof coffee into their IF routine?

Never tried. But occasionally but MCT oil in a regular coffee or take a four sigmatic coffee (they are great)

Thanks for the recommendation on MCT, I'll take a look at it.

I'll also check out Four Sigmatic, I've seen the brand, just haven't purchased any yet.

IF has been the go to for my weight loss. OMAD (one meal a day). I also do Extended Fasts (EF) from time to time. Also great. Lost just under 100lbs so far in 6 months and recommend everyone who wants to lose weight or be healthier to look into them (& make your own decision as i'm not a doctor).

This forum goes so wide in interests, just amazing!

I recently started to adapt some Stoic principles in my life. Hence my profile picture, to remember myself.
Fasting suits this philosophy, but haven't tried it yet.

To me fasting is a big 'scary' step, I love food, I mean I LOVE food. My body needs food.
I probably burn more calories than the average. No matter how much I eat, I never get any fat. (Which is not as good as some may think)

One of these days I'll have to try this method and will come back with my experience.

As of now I'm admiring you guys who are already doing this!

I have been doing intermittent fasting since November of last year. I eat around noon and again at 6. Mostly just water and coffee. I'm not built to be skinny or lean but there is a clear difference in my muscle structure and build, not much of a weight loss. 260lbs, 6 foot 1. 21.5 inch neck. I look like a tan Mr Incredible. The fasting has helped a few gastrointestinal issues I've had for about 8 years. gives my body time to actually process what I eat.

I used to, with great success, but fell off due to laziness and being afflicted with food allergies. I’m going to start again today and will only have an 8 hour feeding window from 9 AM and 5 PM. Currently, I’m doing IIFYM, but it’s nowhere near as effective without IF (at least for me).

I continue to IF but only do it 3-4 days a week. I found it to be too much pressure with my schedule as I meet several times a week for lunch meetings. I found it better for me to "go with the flow" rather than sit there while others are eating. I love IF and I don't see myself ever completely going off it.

The benefits for me, at least have been rewarding.

First and foremost, I feel I am in greater control of my physical body. My bodies' craving do not control me.

Secondly, more clarity and focus. This takes a bit of time once the hurdles of initially starting out when one has to 'train' the bodies' cravings to the focus one has with the goal of not eating at a given time.

Thirdly, feeling better and I firmly believe, feeling younger. I am no longer 30 (how about double that) but I think I am in better physical shape than many that are decades younger.

Fourth, I just feel like working out more, exercising and lifting. I don't prescribe to any particular regimen per se, but I try to work out 4 times a week. Some days, mid morning when I can get away from my business, or around 5 pm which then I have to battle the slowlaners in the gym.

Fifth, and this is partly due to IF, and partly to exercise, I have dropped from a high blood pressure reading to a more normal BP. Entrepreneurs usually have higher stress, and long term that can be very negative. Diet and exercise combats that.

I choose not to kill my value for a donut or a sedentary life. We all only have one 'go round' in this world (that we know of) so take care of #1, no one else will.

That's my philosophy in a nutshell.

BTW, this lifestyle doesn't stop me from smoking my daily Maduro cigar as I'm writing this...

Enjoy the ride.

An important thing to consider when doing IF is the drop in Testosterone levels. Your body goes into starvation mode and can drop muscle mass and increase estrogen levels. My daily supplements include zinc, magnesium, biotin ,Vitamin c and one other that is not coming to me right now. All of these push natural test levels higher, increasing metabolism, and burning more fat.
Just remembered what the other one is. DHEA. stuff works wonders

I've been doing it for a it 5 years now and love it. Although at the moment I don't have strict eating windows. I simply just go without breakfast every day and sometimes if I've eaten quite a lot one day I won't eat at all or will only eat dinner.

When I'm trying to shed some weight I'll usually have a strict window of 2pm to 8pm

The biggest benefit by far for me has been the increased energy and no longer suffering from that lethargic mental fog in the afternoons.
