Hello,

I am wanting to venture into doing importing from china and possibly start a small ecommerce website using Shopify, i have always been interested in starting something like this as a side hobby. I have enjoyed selling personal items on eBay but never took the time to scale this up into a proper business.

Can i kindly ask how i would start researching products to import from china that would be cheap to post and that are trending now or popular? Does anyone kindly know please which suppliers are reputable and where i can start my search please?

Thank you very much and have a great Sunday!

You will find answers to most of your questions in my thread:
GOLD! Sharing my lifetime experience in export/import. Product sourcing specialist.

Regarding researching products that are trending now or popular, that is not a good way to start. Thousands of people use programs such as JungleScout or Amazon's system AMZScout. Shopify blogs also tell you what is trending and what have been best sellers.

Using programs such as that to find big sellers is a very poor business model.

AMZScout boast that they are trusted by 250,000 users. What does that tell you?

It's no wonder so many struggle to make it selling online when they follow the crowd into a mass of competition, selling the same products with the only difference being the name of the vendor.

Find something unique, or something that has never been imported into your country before.

There is some services in china like HyperSku that helps on finding products and them dropshipping. But I don’t recommend, dropshipping has such a low barrier that it’s ultra competitive. And it’s hard to make a brand with dropshipping.

If your goal is to create a sustainable long term business it’s preferable to source something with your brand in the product and build from that. Selling in your own shopify store as well in all marketplaces that you can work with.

About the product, you can check sub categories in Amazon and find something that has some popularity (but not much) and you can improve on (read reviews).

Good luck! It’s a hard business but also on that you can be very creative.

Why China specifically? Does it not make more sense to find the product first and then look where it can be imported from?
You are right. There are manufacturers in countries around the world. I have found genuine exporting sites in 40 countries and have done the hard yards for newcomers first by checking those sites, and second by providing guidance on how to navigate the more difficult ones.

Relying on Shopify blogs can lead you astray, as this thread shows:
