Greetings fellow Fastlaners,
I own an Internet-based news website and have been self-employed for two years. At this point, I am at the mercy of technical support people who know how to do the "guts" work on my website, and to make changes or add features/benefits that I desire.
I have been waiting a long time (150-plus days) for some changes to be made to the site. I've even offered to pay overtime to get the work done, but my hosting company is unresponsive. I am constantly told I'm next on the list, and then the next week there is yet another excuse as to why the work wasn't done. The situation is complicated because the hosting company is also web design firm actively involved as a big player in the industry I serve.
Yes, I have tried to hire other tech support people/firms, and they are also long on promises and short on delivery.
While reading the Millionaire Fastlane, I developed a nagging question regarding control of my business.
MJ DeMarco wrote that he taught himself how to do his own web work. Is it a good investment of my time to teach myself how to design and maintain websites, or would my business be better served focusing on my true strength -- which would be developing content and executing the plan?
With web technology changing so quickly, I wonder if it is a missuse of my time to learn the lingo and develop the skills to do the work myself, only to have those skills rendered obsolete a year or so later when the next upgrade for anything is released. Yet, I can't afford to let opportunities pass because I can't get the necessary work done.
If I am to think like a producer, shouldn't I want to hire someone or contract with another independent company to provide the web support I need?
It is a dilemma -- invest a thousand hours into learning how to develop a website properly so that I can get the work done, and, consequently, pay people to create the content for the websites. Or, invest a thousand hours creating top-notch content and pay people to do the technical work.
Which option is best for maintaining control of the business and ensuring that it grows quickly and properly? Any advice will be appreciated.
