I have started reading unscripted and i realized while reading the book that while I sometimes feel im not making any progress in life I have made a few great accomplishments one of them being breaking my computer gaming habit.

I havent touched a computer game since March this year!

I was big time computer gamer using games as an escape for my shity life for 12 years.
I was depressed had no social life and pretty much no hobbys or fun things exept games.

While iv been working on my life for the last two years I dident stop gaming compleetly till march this year.
What finerly worked for me was a techniek i got from Tony Robins book the giant within;

What you do is think of pain and the major drawbacks of the habbit you want to stop everytime you think about it
and for habits you want to create you link pleasure and the advantiges of doing that habit.

In my case it was linking the depression to PC games and reminding my self what i want to accomplish (wont happen wasting time with games:))

*update just read the bit in unscripted where MJ talks about breaking habits (starts on page 276) There is some good stuff there if your having problems breaking your habits!

My 18yo son, my youngest, left home on August 20. My 3x/week aperitif became daily slug o'whiskey. When I ran out of that, I finished off the vodka, then the triple sec. BUT I DIDN'T BUY ANY MORE.

I stopped it when it was still a habit, not an addiction. It never hurt me, so far as I could tell. But it would have.

I still do a little bit of everything. I think of it as a cheat meal/day. I still consume sugar, play league of legends, and enjoy alcohol every now and then. But understand I limit and control myself.

I became an extreme gamer at like 7 years old, and I completely quit the habit earlier this year.

When your goal is to eternally escape the 5:2 prison, quitting habits that are obstacles becomes a pretty obvious and easy decision.

This forum has greatly improved my self-control.

This year I’ve quit coffee and alcohol. This forum gave me the extra push to quit coffee and I was tired of not living up to my full potential from drinking alcohol

What's wrong with coffee?

I have vertigo and coffee/caffeine makes it so much worse. Plus it kills your productivity (see the notable post). Also it gave me heart palpitations so enough was enough.. and I’m only 34

Research:

Adrenal Fatigue

&

Caffeine increasing Sex Hormone Binding Globulin which reduces the amount of bio-available testosterone

(studies have proven significant increases in SHBG due to caffeine consumption in women, but men have not been studied. No reason IMO to assume men would test different)

Probably sweets and chocolate ha.

I got a sweet tooth.

Trick is just not buying any in the first place and also having a decent sized meal when you are out so you aren’t looking for that third course.

Awesome man, thanks for sharing. Mine was porn. Although I’ve never done drugs before, it felt like overcoming a horrible drug addiction. Looking forward to giving up sugar in the near future

A good framework for breaking any addiction is HALT.

Hungry, angry, lonely, tired.

Stay away from any situation that brings you near your vice while in any of these states. Any try get yourself out of those states as quickly as possible.

So if your addiction is porn don't open your laptop when you are tired, or lonely/bored, or angry etc. It usually means you are much at risk to give in.

Had never heard from HALT, thank you for sharing that. Porn is no longer an issue - it’s sugar and sweets. Do you have any advice on how to stop or give sugar intake?

I used to be constantly dehydrated. Basically I hated drinking water.

My new habit is a mandatory glass in the morning. Also anytime I'm thirsty I make myself drink a glass of water first before having tea or something I crave. It usually cuts the craving in half.

Going on a 2 years of the new habit...never felt better.

*Easy* make sure you throw away all sugar in your house then make sure it stays out.

If you can do this you wont have to fight temptation 24/7 but only in the suppermarket and when you are vistiting friends/family.
Tell your friends/family you are on a diet so they can hold you accontible and dont tempt you.

I guess this tactic will work for other addictions like alcohol too;).

Thank you for this thread!
I'm blown away by the honesty in this forum! Big thanks to all who contributed!
It made me think hard about what addictions/bad habits I currently have. Never done gaming, drugs, coffee, tried alcohol and porn but could't get anything out of it. Had an almost sugar free diet for the past like 10yrs ... (sounds unreal, doesn't it?!?!)

So my big ones would be wasting time watching way too many YouTube videos that are none educational and not doing sports right now. As well as staying up until past midnight (mostly because I am working on my fast lane project...) yet I have to get up at 6am...

Two of these I try to limit through setting an alarm, the third one is a biggy to tackle right now.

I was a really heavy smoker from 17 to 32. Have gone back to it twice for a few months. I can recommend Allen Carr's easy way to quit smoking book.

Apart from that I would say my attitude towards eating healthy in the last 4 years has improved dramatically. I can't remember the last time I thought it was a good and tasty idea to buy a can of coke lol. Grosses me out so much now.

Ex-smoker too, thanks to Allen Carr. And since very much anti-smoking. It's basically paying extra taxes in return for cancer.

Other bad habits I broke:
- Social media feeds, reading the news daily.
- Watching whatever they show on tv.
- Spending too much money on stuff like CDs and vinyl, instead of easier solutions like Spotify.
- Victimizing myself (that includes politics, nationalism, hating "them" for being "them").
- Arguing with everyone who has a different opinion then me, probably the most energy consuming waste of time.
- Trying to convince people to make smarter choices in their life. Seems noble, but I probably just wanted them to be like me.

Watching porn & masturbation. Huge time and energy drainers. Many people think it's bullshit, but it helped me so much. I always used to be the shy kid, uncomfortable when talking to people I didn't know, hesitant to do things etc. I had been regularly watching porn since I was seven until I found out about the effects it might have on one's psyche about two years ago. I still struggled with it breaking the habit until recently. Without it I finally feel like myself, and my social skills have greatly enhanced. Obviously quitting porn alone wouldn't do much for me, but it pointed me towards breaking other bad habits and forming the good ones. The biggest benefit though is the discipline, doing things which need to get done is easy now.
Some of the other habits which I got rid of:
-Gaming
-Victimizing myself
-Being pretentious about my school environment
-Superiority complex
-Jealousy
-Unhealthy eating
-Procrastination
-Social media browsing
-Disrespecting other people's opinions and tastes
-Complaining

First to go was smoking for me.
Followed by drugs, video games and hitting the snooze button.

I'm on about day 55 for no porn. Well worth it in my opinion.

I'm still working on my hardest ones to crack which is procrastination and chocolate/desserts which I've cut down a lot but still get cravings all the time.

Ex-smoker too, thanks to Allen Carr.
The best thing about Allen Carr is how his method is effective on non-smoking addictions as well.

Me? I've quit gaming. It's scary to think about the hours I've lost to pressing buttons and staring at a monitor but it's also reassuring to know that I won't be wasting any more hours that way.

In 15 years are you going to say, "I'm on about day 5,530 for no porn," or are you just going to say "I've quit porn"? There's a big psychological difference there. Everytime I counted days, I always returned to my old addiction.

I used Kick the Drink.. Easily by Jason Vale to quit drinking and he mentions the same thing as you have posted. Stop counting days because in the end you're not completely free.
