That's why I think it always best to stick to the "don't go to the grocery store hungry"

I would take it one step further make sure you NEVER buy products your NOT alowed to eat in your diet.
This way you only have to make that one choice in the store instead of having to battle your self against all the temptation you have stored up in your kitchen.

I personly avoid all fastfood i make it a rule with very few exeptions so i dont have to think about it should i or shouldent i go to fastfood venue ZXY?

Dietary change is tough. Real tough. I would put it up there as the hardest challenge I'd ever encountered in my life. Why? Because EVERYWHERE is an obstacle; a burger commercial, a fast-food joint, a great menu at the restaurant -- you literally cannot escape the encitement and encouragement for a poor diet.

Just know this... it does get easier and at some point, your cravings for whatever is putting your weight out-of-skew (sugar, fat, empty carbs, etc.) will subside.

Good luck my friend. Would love to see you transform into a lean, mean, fighting machine! ;)

This. Reading Dr. Furhman is what made me realize that if you have a weight problem, you have an addiction problem. In other words, somewhere along the line, you routinely fail at impulse control and let the chimpanzee part of your brain call the shots.

Unfortunately, you're right, it's a little like being an alcoholic that has to spend all day in a bar. You can't avoid food, and you can't avoid friends and family at meal time.

Ex: the other day, when we're at the Cheesecake factory, and I'm ordering a salad with no dressing while wifey has pot roast and Dad has a burger, I had to subtly remind myself: My body doesn't want that burger, my f*cking addiction does, and I won't live my life as an addict. My body wants all the nutrients in a huge serving of veggies. I make the decisions, not the chimpanzee in my hindbrain.

It's all mental, dude. That's how I know you're gonna succeed.

My older kids are coming in town next weekend for Memorial Day. My wife asked me what I was going to eat? If I was going to delay the start of this until after Memorial Weekend, presumably so I could eat everything that is slowly killing me for one more weekend. Nope.

I am flipping the switch (and I would just as soon have my young adult kids see me doing something radical and winning the mental game anyway.)

I guarantee you they would rather have a healthy Dad than share a pumpkin pie with a fat one.

Another incentive? I will love to walk into next years meetup in Scottsdale transformed. Will love to show some of you that you were right, and others of you what is possible.

Here's how I handle special occasions of gluttony: I just tell people outright I'm on a vegan diet. It's TX, so I usually have to endure some light ribbing, but it reverses the social pressure. Instead of feeling pressured to crush a bunch or ribs and potato salad in front of people, I now feel the pressure to resist, because I've just told everyone I don't eat any of that.

Also, repeating something over and over to others has a way of making you believe it yourself. More and more often, I don't have to fight the impulse to order meaty greasy food. More and more I don't even see it on the menu. The chimpanzee is starting to be brainwashed into believing that he's simply not interested in that stuff.

Oh man, you're going to crush it.

If by chance, down the road (weeks, months, or even years) you need to shift gears or whatever due to a plateau, I'd be happy to brainstorm ideas on PM, skype, or cell phone, whatever you need. I'm sure there are plenty of others around here that would do the same. YOU WILL SUCCEED.

I'm planning on being at the next summit, can't wait.

This couldn't be truer, when I graduated high school I weighed 235 lbs and was on track to gain even more, now two years later I am down to 165. It all happened because of this phenomenon. I first gave up soda and changed nothing else. For a while, I dreaded it and craved soda, but after a month it rarely crossed my mind. Never drinking soda, with no exceptions was the way to go for me, because it became automatic. That was enough to stop me from having net weight gains to remaining at the same weight. From there I had to start making other changes.

For me, the best way was to make one change at a time and wait for my body and mind to accept that change for it to become my living norm. Then add another modification to my diet and wait until I am used to it. For somebody like myself who wouldn't be able to stick to massive dietary adjustments for longer than a week or two, this was the ideal way to commit to improving my health.

Thanks for posting this though, you've reminded me that I am not done improving my health, I still have changes to make.

Part of this public expose is that it further minimizes failure as an option.

I've created my own reality TV drama and y'all are the audience. Inviting the scrutiny into something that a lot of people maybe Too Proud to share as part of my strategy to eliminate failure.

I heard of one guy who lost weight would buy a bowling ball every time he lost 15lbs for a visual representation of what he was carrying on his body.

At 60lbs that's 4 bowling balls of extra weight you're carrying around constantly. Crazy to think about.

I love that desk treadmill. I looked at getting one about a year ago, but for whatever reason I decided not to get it.

On the other hand, I did get a standing desk about 3 years ago. It was a cheap one from Ikea that has a crank arm on it to lower and raise it. It cost me about $250. I have had it in the sitting position for about 3 days out of those 3 years. It now feels weird to be sitting at any desk.

I am rooting for you Vig! Can't wait to see you again and see the progress first hand. Your children will thank you as you will now have WAY more prime years of life with them. That is the greatest gift you can give.

Your body adapts to it, but over time it takes it's toll. Nice part for me is one of the first areas you see weight loss on me is my face, and then it directly attacks the overinflated innertube I carry around my midsection. That is exactly what the low carb targets first.

I only marginally know you, but I reserve the right to mercilessly rip into you at the next summit if you fall off the wagon :)

Rooting for ya man, always love to see people make positive changes in their lives. Particularly with fitness. There are few areas in life where you can make massive progress so quickly (< 1 year) just by following a simple system.

True, and it's the simple answer to fixing obesity and poor diet. They're addictions. Sugar lights up the brain more than cocaine. EVERYTHING has sugar in it. I come from experience in fighting this addiction, and I'm still fighting it!

Ex: the other day, when we're at the Cheesecake factory, and I'm ordering a salad with no dressing while wifey has pot roast and Dad has a burger, I had to subtly remind myself: My body doesn't want that burger, my f*cking addiction does, and I won't live my life as an addict.

Again, changing my diet was the HARDEST thing I've ever done in my life because of this fact. HARDER than starting a business, HARDER than moving across the country with nothing, HARDER than learning how to speak in front of a group despite introversion. HARDEST!

One really needs to do some mental gymnastics to get over the hurdles. And then one needs a really strong ANCHOR.

Another incentive? I will love to walk into next years meetup in Scottsdale transformed.

Potential Anchor: How about if you don't get below "X" weight, you have to start your presentation with your shirt off?

I just tell people outright I'm on a vegan diet

Works fabulously except for the infamous catch question that undoubtedly will come later, "How do you get your protein?" LOL.

It's unbelievable how obsessed fat sedentary Americans are with protein. If you didn't know any better, you'd think you needed a bunch of protein just to WATCH sports. You just don't respond. People will argue even if you're standing there 20 lbs thinner than the last time you saw them, and they're out of breath from walking to the fridge.

I'm sure you'll absolutely kill it.

Your attitude is basically the same as mine - whatever you can sustain in a positive direction is the best choice you can make regardless of whatever else is out there.

I know you'll rock this :)

Understanding the why behind the cravings is really important to consistency.

I would recommend anybody on the path to weight reduction to educate themselves in how the brain reacts from a biological standpoint when we eat.

Long story short - There are 4 chemicals in the human brain that create "addiction." They provide the brain with feelings of happiness and pleasure when released.

Endorphins, Dopamine, Serotonin, Oxytocin - You can look into the others another time

But the big one regarding food is dopamine. It is a chemical that evolved to motivate the human species to react pleasurably to working towards and accomplishing goals. High levels of dopamine are produced as a result of constant action and effort while low levels of dopamine are relevant in people show tendancies of procrastination, low self esteem, doubt, etc...

tldr; Dopamine is highly addictive. It is produced every time we eat. Sugar and fat provide higher level of dopamine. Desensitization to dopamine levels causes us to overeat.

Dopamine is an essential chemical in the reward system of our human brain. Highly addictive similar to the effects of cocaine on the brain.

So why do we overeat and crave unhealthy foods?

Primitively, we are wired for survival and the brain rewards actions that allow us to survive. So when we eat, we get a little shot of dopamine. Great for the human species to continue looking for food to trigger these reward centers.

The problem comes with modern food - sugar and fat in particular. Because of the way the chemicals are structured, they release a much higher level of dopamine than traditional whole foods.

How does the brain react? Remember that we are wired to constantly seek ways to tap into these reward centers - so effectively, the brain will connect sugar/fat to a "good decision" and produce what we experience as cravings. But because the level of dopamine release in a donut is much higher than an apple, we will naturally gravitate to the higher dopamine foods.

At the same time, just like with any drug, the brain becomes desensitized through constant exposure. That means that even though the first donut you ever ate and the donut you ate yesterday has the same level of dopamine, our brains register it differently due to desensitization. So we eat more in order to experience the same level of reward, aka "pleasure.

What worked for me was intermittent fasting.

It's simple and makes sense. We just eat too much and too much of the wrong things.

There are tons of diets out there but the common denominator is always just too much food.

These days you go out to eat to a fast food joint and you get a freakin gallon of soda with your combo it's ridiculous. And never mind the fact that there aren't any real healthy options in terms of restaurants and fast food.

As Americans our culinary environment is literally killing us. You can't go anywhere without there being food that makes you fat. Not to mention my friends give me a weird look when they invite me to the casino Buffett and I say I'm fasting.

I always listen to my body. I feel good and energized when I fast. When I eat three big meals a day I feel sluggish and sleepy.

Are you eating a high carb diet? I'd be curious to know if you were to eat three big keto diet meals in a day if you would still feel the same or if you are already doing this. A lot of people feel tired after eating carbs.

Good luck with this.

I dropped 60 pounds pretty quickly doing the same thing as you @Vigilante.

Changed to water from pop, and pretty much cut out a ton of carbs and root veggies for an extended period. Slightly different plan than SBD, but close enough.

I also added in an intermittent fasting routine with it. I pretty much only eat from 2pm to 7pm EST.

Wishing the best for you.

I know I haven't posted in a while, but I just wanted to share this story of mine. Maybe it will help keep you going when it gets rough (which it totally will).

Below is a before and after. So I had always meant to get ripped (and I still have a longgggggg way to go) but for various reasons and excuses and girlfriends I couldn't do it.

I decided in January to STFU and get the work done. I didn't care how uncomfortable it was going to be, or how miserable it could get. I just said come hell or high water I am going to be ripped a few months from now.

Fast forward a month, I find somebody at my local gym that is impressed with my dedication and offers to train me to compete if I just stick with him and do his workouts in the morning (which suck).

So I did, and I stuck to the diet. I didn't have a cheat meal for 2 MONTHS. That's 60 days of clean eating, chicken and broccoli (which I hated at this point) doing the math for you :)

But it was finally working, I was starting to slowly see definition. It could get pretty miserable, I was hungry all the time (although I figured out ways to combat this pretty effectively). I was eating a 1000 calorie deficit everyday, and man it was rough.

But I told myself to F*ck off every day and I just sucked it up. The after picture is down 30 pounds. It took me about 4 months to get there, sticking to diet & doing intense workouts.

I have my first physique show next month. My life doesn't look the same, it's F*cking incredible.

I don't mean this to be inspirational or anything, but just to show that if you stick with it, it works out. Total trust the process move. I wanted to quit every day
But now I feel way more in control of my "destiny" in a sense. I know what my body does with what I put in it. I can scan food and know "yeah not happening" or "totally can fit it in" now like it's nothing.

I know I wasn't really that overweight, but this was very very difficult.

I hope this can help in some way.

I got 3/4ths down the first page and stopped reading. Let's not over complicate this fastlaners.

There is no such thing as a cheat day.
The only start date is right now, not "Monday". (no need to wait for the food to make radical change)
sleep well, eat right, move more... in that order.
