Am I the only person here that uses games to let my mind relax and reflect on ideas?

When I wander around in Skyrim, Im thinking about my business ideas, and sometimes I come up with new ideas. It kind of occupies my conscious mind while my subconscious mind has time to reflect.

Does anyone else feel like that or am I just weird?

You're missing the point. Nobody here actually thinks video games are terrible or a bad way to have fun/relax.

We're being harsh on video games, and on the OP, because he uses them as an excuse to do nothing. By every description early in this thread he shows that they have a seriously negative effect on his life. So we're advising that he make a change. If you can enjoy video games and not let them mess up your work output, then game away.

Video games are not questions of... morality. Lol. They are neither "good" nor "bad."

There are only two issues of logic at hand here. You are either willing and able to perform an action, or one (or both) of those two elements is lacking.

Think about a fat guy who sits on the couch all day. This fat guy is perfectly ABLE to get off of his fat arse, but everyday, he lives his life like Mr. Potato Head. The only other issue is your will. Is the fat guy willing to get off of his arse? What are his desires? If his desire to get in shape is higher than his desire to deepen the imprint on the couch, then he will get up.

In other words, logically, it all comes down to what you want more. You clearly want to play video games more than you want to play the the game of life. Otherwise, you'd be doing that other thing. You know, the thing that's actually worth your time.

Don't get me wrong. I think video games are dope. When I had a Playstation, I was all about Crash Bandicoot and the NFL Gameday series. When I had an XBOX, I was a Halo junkie. And Assassin's Creed is my shit.

But there comes a point when you have to be able to look at the guy in the mirror as cooler than any fantasy-land created by someone else. Think of it like this: Would you rather be the guy hunched over his laptop, admiring pictures of her... or would you rather be WITH her, while she's in that... oh so compromising position? That, my friend, is unfortunately an apt analogy for your situation. Video games provide false gratification, but you're not going to get anyone pregnant by playing. Get it? I hope you do.

I'm going to take a leap of faith here, and guess that you may be avoiding reality subconsciously... on purpose. No worries. I think everyone has done it or does it.

Here's the thing, though. You can flip that shit around, turn it into sugar. You may not see it right now, but deep inside of that situation that you want to escape so badly is a path to self-discovery and light. Find something you love. Get passionate about it. Rather, be passionate about it. When people hear your voice, make them FEEL infected with your level of belief. Find a need... and... "ride the wave" (Dr. HAHA Lung, Mind-Sword...)

Perhaps you should try getting disgusted with your situation. Focus on what it will look like for you to accomplish the real world goal, what it will feel like. That's powerful, especially if you get creative with it.

You know how at the end of Lose Yourself Eminem stares intensely into the camera and tells you that you can do anything you can set your mind to?

Scary part is... he's right.

You can change your habit. You can change your life.

Played video games until I was 18! Now I'm 20 and I can't play for more than 5 minutes... It doesn't interest me anymore at all...

I play a couple of MMO's at night, but when I get home from work I focus on spending time with my wife, and then while she cooks. I do whatever work needs to be done on my website, or research my next steps in the process, then after my shower and dinner I wind down for the night by playing a game.

If you like to game so much, you ever thought about cashing in on it? start you a youtube channel and do walkthroughs and hints and tips. It'll take time to build your subscribers, but one channel I watch the guy does it, has a huge fan base and makes decent money with it.

Just my two cents,

Good luck

It's not about quitting games.

It's about wanting the Fastlane more than you want to play games.

Until that day comes, you're not ready.
Agreed, planning for a bountiful future is the most exciting challenge of all. Now I do think he could channel his passion for games into some Fastlane type ideas. He just needs to connect with some other gamers and find out how to solve their problems.

Well, I finally decided to commit my time to my real dreams, being in Incredible shape Financially, Mentally, Socially, and most importantly Health wise

None of these included video games,

So I quit. It is very hard, I'm still in the process, but I can already feel a change.

Keep in mind I've tried to quit about 10 times, every time reverting back because of some reason, which I believe is tough times in my life. Instead of making myself better I tried to escape, I realize this isn't the way anymore. I want to be my own superman.

Sitting at a chair wasting my life is something I don't want to do anymore.

I suggest you get strong reasons for quitting, it actually works.

I have this problem as well, I even spent my first 2k on a gaming computer that I'm using right now, the 120hz monitor *Omg* anyway I limit my gaming to an hour a day tops. Set a timer if you have to, anything that will make your quit in your tracks. You don't have to get rid of all your games if you have the will power to manage your time efficiently. Video games aren't the problem here, it's more likely getting distracted and wanting to occupy your mind doing something else, disconnecting from the real world. It makes sense but it's another roadblock for you to get past.

Not sure if it's been posted already but i recommend giving this a read http://kingpinlifestyle.com/how-to-quit-playing-video-games/

It suggests you quit cold turkey, completely cut of all gaming and fill the void that gaming normally occupies which normally consist of:

A temporary escape, constant measurable growth, a challenge and social.

To be honest, you can fill the measurable growth, challenge and social aspects with a fastlane mentality and a temporary escape can really consist of anything from going to the gym, meditating etc.

I went from playing a mix of games daily for up to 12 hours a day to not playing at all and using my time more productively to develop useful skills

Did OP end up successfully quitting?

I was into gaming for a very long time, when I was around 21 I was realising how much of a waste of time it was but still I continued to play. And it was really only one game 'Dota'.

This went on for another few years on and off, trying to quit.. same as the gambling problem I had.

I had always been lost with what I wanted to do in life and it wasn't until around 9 months ago I knew I definitely wanted to be an entrepreneur but I still hadn't made the decision which required changing almost all aspects of my life including quitting gaming. 5 months later I finally made the solid decision and although the first couple months I still played video games a little bit it was less and less. Now I don't play them at all or if I do it is only 1-2 hrs per month. And gambling I have quit completely.

We can all quit its just about internalizing that decision. And now that I can see my life is going somewhere (even though currently its very boring) I don't need the escapism anymore. Also substituting something else in its place e.g. reading books and learning. Learning is the new game I play (I know lame)

Thank you all for this thread. I haven't played much recently but I have always wanted to be up to date what is going on in gaming industry so I was reading a lot about it. After reading this thread yesterday I made the decision and took an action immediately - I deleted the links to gaming pages/forums from my favorites in google chrome.

Today I am going to sell my PS3, give my steam account to one of my friends and drop all the gaming magazines to the gaming pub in my city.

I have my goals in paper and I am working on them every day but not 100% which makes me feel guilty even when I am playing in the evening just for 30-40 minutes. No more excuses. MJ's post on facebook made me think about gaming one more time:

Here's what I did...

Xbox 360: Sold the system and games on eBay

Online RPG Game: Got the account banned/deactivated

If I didn't make it impossible for me to play, I would've kept wasting way too much time. I'm not someone who can play in moderation

I lost interest after years of being pretty wrapped up in gaming. My fear and anxiety of having a game interfere with my success eventually cause me to lose interest. Unfortunately, its caused me to lose interest in most other things as well except for sex

Gaming has made me lose months of my life, forego opportunities that easily would have made me over 10.000 dollars and in the end I developed severe RSI on my thumb root that cost months to recover and still isn't totally gone.

I deleted my online account and have never looked at it again.

I guess if you have a legit problem, then you gotta give it up. But if its just a hobby you love, then giving it up seems silly to me. Whats life without doing things you enjoy? You just have to cut it back to maybe a hour a day. That can be your break.

I though i quited gaming, until i wanted to play a little bit for 1 hour one time, you know how that turned out :(

Yesterday i played total war rome II from 16:00 till 2:00.
Everyday it is a war, one side of me wants to play and the other side wants to do productive things.
And uninstalling doesnt work xD i reinstalled steam the past 8 months like 30 times :(

There will be a day i will look back and i think about at all that wasted time, now i am still saying: well i am still 18 i have lots of years to make money, but after 10 years i don't want to say i just wasted 10 years....
Holiday just started btw, i remember how my past holidays turned out. I had a few productive holidays though, i know i can do it.

If you guys want to quit get rid of all the games you have and replace it with something else to fill your time, i didn't replace my gaming so i'm still trying to quit.
If you have the discipline to stop gaming in an instant for a month you will look back and feel awsome.

And don't even try to install a game again, it will eat your time for dinner.

It's not about quitting games.

It's about wanting the Fastlane more than you want to play games.

Until that day comes, you're not ready.

This is so right! Couldn't agree more

I love games so much, been hardcore gamer all my life, now i make games.
I'll never give up playing them, but until the day i quit my day job games are on the back burner, i play once in a blue moon at my friends house on weekends. I still visit game forums to read game news though. I got big plans after im free to one day lock myself in for a month and just play all the games i missed out on, its gonna be great!

There must be something much deeper that causes that. There *must be something that frustrates you, something that you want to escape from or divert your attention from. Examine what that is and deal with it.

I got addicted with Dota2 for quite some time 2year-ish ago, upon reflection I realised the ROOT cause was my frustration with boring and repetitive tasks I needed to accomplish myself.

Gaming is an easy escape from life and real decisions. When you're young, you think you have tons of time, but as you get older you realize you have to be careful with it because building life and doing things takes a lot longer than you imagined. Priorities are everything at that point. Priority 1 - building your life, making sure your future has a solid foundation. Then down the line there is fun. If you get those two reversed, it's easy to become one of those dudes on 4chan who talks about no social life no money no friends but playing games all day. Those dudes hate themselves but can't change what they must - its too scary to change so much, to make so many correct steps to build a 'normal life'.

I have a business, and I recently installed gta v because ive waited 3 years for it. It is an amazing game. But I have to do the right stuff (business decisions) before I play so I can actually enjoy playing it, and not feel like I'm screwing my time and future, and not enjoy it. Get your priorities straight and then you will really have fun when it's time to have fun. Without it, you can have a really crappy time even if you are on vacation or at a party - been there done that.

It's been years and years, but I gave in...

My primary reason for purchase was because there was an amazing sale AND I want to learn how to dance (well), hahaha.

I'll be investing time and money into the Just Dance series so I can get in the habit of dancing.

Just look at this video. He kills it!:joyful:

That was / is my problem in particualr, after a stressful day I like to space out and not think and gaming is that process for me. Ususally spend an hour or 2 at night before i go to sleep to allow me to transfer out of "normal life".

But then I like to multi-task somteimes like right now I'm playing Dota on one screen and reading the forum on another.

Why did you resurrect this ancient thread?

It's a GOLD thread and deserves to love as long as the community will let it.

This issue affects a lot of younger guys (mainly) because video games offer an escape, emulating an environment where one is achieving their goals.

Then they look at their real life and realize that they're unhappy with all of the 'real life' stuff they've missed.

THAT'S why this ancient thread, and this discussion, should live on.

I've been falling into this trap again with video games, been playing a lot recently.
You feel shitty about your life, you want to do nothing but escape, you play video games, you feel worse about playing video games, so you play more. Get more depressed, more upset with life, the more you play.

It truly is because of a lack of purpose in life. If you know exactly what you want, and are making daily progress towards your vision, and getting small victories throughout the process, playing video games or watching tv wont be a single thought in your mind.
