A recent post of @MJ DeMarco GOLD! - MINDSET - 9 Dream-Killing Lies You Sell Yourself...
reminded me of a book I've read a while ago at my university.
Erich Fromm "Escape from freedom". I would highly recommend reading if You want to expand on the topic. Here's a short excerpt:

"Escaping freedom

As 'freedom from' is not an experience we enjoy in itself, Fromm suggests that many people, rather than using it successfully, attempt to minimize its negative effects by developing thoughts and behaviors that provide some form of security. These are as follows:

  1. Authoritarianism: Fromm characterizes the authoritarian personality as containing both sadistic and masochistic elements. The authoritarian wishes to gain control over other people in a bid to impose some kind of order on the world, but also wishes to submit to the control of some superior force which may come in the guise of a person or an abstract idea.
  2. Destructiveness: Although this bears a similarity to sadism, Fromm argues that the sadist wishes to gain control over something. A destructive personality wishes to destroy something it cannot bring under its control.
  3. Conformity: This process is seen when people unconsciously incorporate the normative beliefs and thought processes of their society and experience them as their own. This allows them to avoid genuine free thinking, which is likely to provoke anxiety."

I've been reading the Three Body Problem book series. I'm on the 3rd book right now. The first two books were kind of mind blowing. I can say that this book series is so different than anything I've read. It makes me wonder what is going through the author's brain. It is so unpredictable. Just to give you an idea, when I started the third book on audible, I had to double check that I bought the correct book because of how it started.

I was gifted these books so I just started reading without knowing what the subject matter is.

There is a TV series now about it. It is available on YouTube.

I'm getting tired of reading self help and business books lately.

Can anyone recommend other books to read that have helped improve their life, growth and thinking?

I stopped reading them as well. TMF , Unscripted and GRRE are definitely the best financial books. I now listen to a playlist of video's/podcasts when I am driving to work which takes me ~40 minutes. I then listen to books summaries. These are some examples:
If you're looking at books about human behaviour / society I would suggest:
  • Propaganda - Edward L. Bernays
  • The Mind and Society - Vilfredo Pareto
There are a lot of books from the past which are far better than all those modern self help books. Yet, they are kind off forgotten. You won't find them on the front page of an online store.

Have you read biographies already? Ben Franklin’s autobiography. Solitary by Alfred Woodfox. A Different Drummer by William Kelley. I started the Extreme Ownership accompanying workbook last week which has been good, and a different take on a self help book

Just finished "How To Get Rich" by Felix Dennis, and honestly...

This was one of the best books on business that I've ever read. It was a fun read filled with loads of wisdom and lessons woven in. I couldn't put it down - except to take loads and loads of notes!

Similar to MJ's books, you can tell the author was just a (very) rich dude sharing his thoughts and wisdom. There was none of the fluffy BS you see in so many "get rich quick" books written by people with little to no money. This was the real deal.

I can totally understand why MJ recommends it on the Fastlane Bookstore. It's a seriously good book.

"What's In It For Them" by Joe Polish. Got inspired by @Andy Black's signature and to focus on others, other than myself and pain. I started this one because I want to be a better person to find problems and connect with others.

Another is "The Mountain Is You". Also Unscripted .

Rational Recovery.
It's the only good addiction recovery book besides the books from Allen Carr.

The author heavily criticizes American addiction treatment and how the 12 step programm is 100% counterproductive. It's a great read for anyone struggling to quit something they know they should.

Read what you need to read is the Fastlane principle about reading.

MJ says in other places that he is taking writing, he loves it. His list above shows it.

I am reading nothing currently. The Unscripted series sealed it for me. I don't read purely to get moving. I will read what I need to move forward with my current project, when I need.

Last week I read After University What Next by Mukiibi.

IMG_0388.jpegHot off the presses: if you have an interest in healthspan and lifespan, Dr. Peter Attia has no equal in the medical community when it comes to living a long and healthy life. His new (and only) book "Outlive" just dropped. I just started it, but have listened to several different pods discussing it and it does not disappoint.

That book makes me want to take my family off to the woods, build a cabin, and never be on the grid again. A very anti-entrepreneurial take for me to have some guilty pleasure in.

I also watch Life Below Zero… Same reason.

If I could live two lives…

Since I can’t, it’s CEOing giant businesses.

simple read. you can also download an app called lean play (google play store, free) and listen to it.
This book teaches one how to think about things a bit differently, it's taken me (over two years time) into a whole new world. I highly suggest downloading the app (again, it's free, no ads, nothing) and you can listen to this same book plus others (I suggest improvement starts with I)
then, when your ready, start chatting (same app, still free) and learn to know more folks in the lean community. it's a worldwide community that is superfocused on making one's life easier.
