So, taking some inspiration from a GOLD thread posted by Lex, I decided to follow in his footsteps and launch an online digital products ecommerce store with the aim of growing a steady 2-3k per month stream of income, primarily focusing on google ads to start.

What I've done so far:

- Found a product that I think can work and has some proven demand (etsy etc.)
- Created the product myself (spent a little longer than had hoped as new to some programmes)
- Purchased domain from name cheap and set up shopify store (chose over WordPress as lower learning curve)
- Added 2 products, and a bundle pack containing all of my products (25 in total)
- Installed Apps to allow for digital downloads to take place
- Set up email for my domain (used free plan on zoho)
- Set up payment providers to allow for money in
- Set up google analytics, linked to shopify site
- Set up google ads account - using a spend 400 get 400 offer
- Created first ad - ad is set up following Andy's teachings (start selling at the final point, the sale)
- Ad linked directly to products page with clear headings indicating what I am selling
- Started running Ads with a £10 / day budget with a £1 max bid price

All of this was completed in 1 month.

Current stats:

- Ads been running for 1 day
- So far: 18 clicks, CTR: 9%, £0.78 CPC and around 18 pounds spent.
- No conversions
- Currently waiting for 200 clicks to draw any theories.

Next Steps

- Will wait for 200 clicks to assess situation
- Will add more individual products in the meantime to flesh out the store (only did 2 initially to save time and get the store running)

What have I learnt so far?:

- Work quicker. The quicker I work, the quicker I can succeed or fail. Fail fast
- That my idea needs a little time to asses viability - need more patience
- Learnt how to set up online stores in a professional way
- Learnt how to run google ads (at a beginners level)

Look forward to keeping you all updated.

Any advice, comments, tips or praises - by all means comment away! the more the merrier!

Ash.

Don't wait for 200 clicks. Look at your search terms now. Are they what you were hoping to see? How well do they match your ads and landing page? Are they a perfect match, close enough, or poor?

Track conversions of people clicking your "Add To Cart" button or equivalent, as well as people actually converting. How many visitors are clicking? How many add-to-carters are buying? Now you've two conversion rates to work on.

Now go watch these and figure out what your metrics mean:

I noticed a couple of my “exact match” terms were triggering for some searches that really weren’t relevant.. related yes, but not relevant.

I added these as negative exact matches

I’ve been tracking my analytics and doesn’t appear to be any add to carts yet. Only at 18 clicks.

Will add all of my products, giving more opportunity to sell .

Thanks Andy.

Don't create more products yet. Dial in this one first.

How many products are on your landing page? Is it doing better or worse because you've more than one?

Did you add conversion tracking in Google Ads for people clicking the buttons so you can see which ads and search terms are generating those conversions?

Why do you think there's been no Add-To-Carts?

Add Clarity and observe what people are doing.

How much volume is on mobile? What does tour page look like on mobile? Is the Add-To-Cart button above the fold (it doesn't have to be, but check what your page looks like on mobile if most of your visitors are coming from mobile).

PS: It Doesn't have to say Add-To-Cart. I'm using that as an example.

I have 3 on the page. Not sure if its doing better or worse. Two are individual products, and the third is a bundle containg those 2 and many more.

Ive added conversion tracking, and added fields to watch specific page views for each product to see if people are clicking one more than the other.

The way its set up is that when they click the add, the page they are brought to has the 3 products on it, but they then have to click into each product to see full description and add to cart. Perhaps this can be simplified to have a straight add to cart button with full description?

Do you think its worth building a separate page, purely for google ads conversions? where it is literally an all in one page for exactly what they searched for?

I think there has been no add to carts as volume is low, and possible because its harder to find the button than could be.

Will have a critical think and implement a few logical changes.

Thanks Andy,

any more advice, just keep it coming - It's much appreciated, just want to learn from the best

UPDATE

So not much has happened in terms of google ads. It's slowly getting more clicks and I've noticed some search terms that aren't relevant so have added to the negative search terms list.

0 conversions to date. I have remapped where the ad sends you and is now directed straight to purchase page with add to cart. I have included more information of exactly what they are getting in terms of purchase (pdf etc) and how they will receive in the form of a simple, eye catching title.

Will keep adds running till we hit 200 clicks and go from there.

Will keep you all posted.

Ash.

Congrats on getting started @Keushei

I got a significant lift in conversions after implementing a few of the things shown in this video by Davie Fogarty: Oodie website SUCKED!...here is how we fixed it!

I'd say sending people straight to the purchase/product page is a good idea. They clicked your ad because they're interested in that thing, so send them to that thing. Make it ultra easy for them.

It sounds like this is your first website so I'd encourage you to stick with this one until you either:
1) Confirm that you couldn't properly skew or provide value enough, or...
2) Start selling this product and can make an informed decision if this business will fulfill your needs.

There are like 10,000,000 reasons why someone would or wouldn't buy your product. I'd spend a bit more time here refining your offer of this one product, your website/landing page, your ads, etc. before moving on to other products.

Then, in the future when you KNOW your landing page is good, copy is good, ads are good, etc. you can test out new products. Whether that's on this project or another is up to you. Just be sure to squeeze as much experience out of this one as possible.

Thank you, honestly good advice and very much appreciate it.

I will see how I get on with the revisions. I sliced the price in half and changed the product name also to make it as clear as possible what they are buying.

Will watch the vid after work (9-5 as a finance admin, then four hours of this work) (tiring stuff).

I just fear my search volume is too low. I’ve had 42 clicks in 3 days with 10 a day ad spend.

Not sure if that’s bad volume or not.

Will keep going forward with this

I also wanted to open a store in a wider niche that I could ship physical products too. Add a product, test, repeat… find a winner then have a dedicated site for it.

Will keep you all posted too.
