I have been in the healthcare field for over ten years, and have developed an idea that meets a significant need in the long term care setting, but I do not have the tech knowledge to move forward with this project. I would need someone very knowledgeable in computer programming/interface systems to help me develop this product. It incorporates electronic charting, a medicare mandate, which is not new, nor the main focus of the system, but also other inputs.

I have yet to see a system such as this, perhaps because it hasn't been developed, or perhaps because of cost, yet could be a huge factor for a facility when facing legal action, good or bad, that depends on the facility.

Thoughts?

Is it something you could learn?

Could you hire a freelancer?

What have you done to go out and find someone with the knowledge?

I’ve found loads of great people by just going to events I’ve found on MeetUp. You may not find someone with the exact skills, but you may find someone who knows someone.

You said (1) I have a great idea, (2) I don't know how to do it technically. Which one of those seems to be the problem?

If it is THAT good, yeah, you should go and invest money, split profits with the developer or pay a flat fee OR learn it yourself or by getting a tutor and asking him specific questions. What else is holding you back?

I'd have to agree with everything written above + getting a mentor or two that can guide you through this venture. In fact I would do all 3, learn the foundation, hire freelancers more knowledgeable than You, and solicit the mentors.

It will take you forever to get to market. You could be facing a blackhole with regulations etc.

Stick to something you can realistically do. You can always revisit this once you have more resources

I'd love to learn the code needed to put this in place, but I feel it would take to long.

I guess the only thing holding me back is finding someone qualified and with the appropriate tech skills to make it happen.

UPDATE: Upon doing more extensive research, I have found that there are a few programs currently in place, and some improve on parts of the initial idea, but none of them incorporate the main function of this idea. I'm now faced with either trying to pitch it to a company currently in development/practice, with hopes it gets picked up, or abandoning the idea all together.

I wouldn't pitch a solution to a problem I intend to solve to another company so they can solve it. (Who does that?)
I wouldn't HOPE someone pick me or my idea up. (Why HOPE? Why not pick it up myself or try and get a good deal from it?)
I wouldn't abandon the idea just because I can't code. (Why not develop it myself or pay someone to develop a mini version and try to get people to use it?)

Are you running away from the problem because it seems hard to solve?

That is exactly why you should do it: most people will toss it out and look for something simpler.

"Cmon!, let's write an ebook, sell some fat-burning pills, create a porn site...blah blah blah."

Shying away from a problem because it *looks hard* ain't gonna get you anywhere.

It's a roller-coaster ride that could shoot up your greed, turn you into a money-chasing Gee and waste your most valuable asset - Time.

Ideas and skills are similar: they're useless on their own and they're both easy to acquire.

Udemy, Coursera, Youtube.

It's not easy to learn, but it's doable if you want it badly enough.

The premise of any enterprise that grows legs (and if you don’t want it to grow legs what’s the point) is that specialized skills are preformed by specialized people. I personally wouldn’t waste my time trying to learn whatever it is and learn to lead. Hire it done and get it done.

You have the grand vision... there is a reason why the technical folks of the world haven’t taken every idea yet. ;)

You're describing the entrepreneurial process which is all about problem solving. You found your first problem, but you want to give up because of it?

Any legit business is a solved problem. To solve that problem, you have to solve problems yourself. The bigger the problem, the stronger the opportunity.

To deny this relationship is to deny the entrepreneurial process. RARELY will your skill sets and networking base meet the opportunity. This is definitely something you'd HIRE vs LEARN. As Kak said, specialized people are there for a reason.

The parallel is this: I've found this great way to lose weight; the problem is it involves a river and a kayak. I don't own a kayak and the river is a 30 minute drive away. Do I give up?

I know nothing about the medicare/regulatory side of things, but quite a bit about getting software developed. You may have piqued my interest to hear more...

So basically its a system, not giving anything away as its readily available for the most part, that allows the tracking and charting of nurses/CNA in long term care settings. The system I envision and have worked out, as a rough draft anyway, is different in how the medical provider interacts.

I get what everyone is saying, and I guess I needed a kick in the a$$, and someone else to tell me to stop dismissing, and move forward with development, so thanks, I'm starting to put it together as we speak!

Not what I was saying....

If you have specifics on the system you want to develop, PM me and I can have one of my dev teams take a look at if we'd be able to help you
