What a lame post.

Are these the tiny things you are going to focus on right now?

The guy has a million things on his plate and nearly every media outlet in the country looking to find any perceived mistakes and magnify them 1000 times.

I suggest focusing on what you control and where you can add value.

Is this the best use of your time right now?

A MISINFORMATION MACHINE bothers me what can I say.

You took the time to defend a 16,000+ times liar/probably spreading the virus, will not get tested, stole his own Medical Records, in charge of a epidemic. Lame.

Old...

"The misinformation machine"

And then quote a newspaper that got sued for up to 250 million in damages for making up false stories recently.

As I said - maybe just look at who you can help right now and not get caught up being a reactive spectator.

Well this is true if you have full code. Even if you're deceased, they will give you medicine, but I can say many times I just thought it would be nice if people let them go when they're meant to go.

At home, sick, don't want to go to the supermarket and infect people but, I need a thermometer and batteries for the oxygen meter. Online all thermometers are sold out. At least I prepped food. I wonder if I have corona. No too worried atm. I am sick, but I feel relatively decent, could be way worse. I will ask a friend to go check out the supermarket for me. It would nice to be able to monitor my sickness.

It went so quickly from talking about corona in other countries to being in the middle of it. Interesting times.

What I do want to say about the mortality rate. I think it is way lower than the numbers suggest. These numbers aren't even close to the truth. Here they only test people that are at high risk (older/other severe illness), otherwise, the advice is to stay home and get better. That makes me think the Korea numbers are the most accurate, they tested the most and the mortality rate is closer to that lower-number than the higher percentages you saw at first. Because there are for sure many people with corona out here not getting tested. Everyone that doesn't get really ill basically.

I presume the mortality rate depends on how well the health system can cope? If the health services are overrun then surely the mortality rate goes up?

I presume it’s the same for the rate of infection. If communities take measures then it should be lower.

EXACTLY.

We can not throw lip service at it like it is a reality TV show.

We need/needed aggressive prevention and Universe forbid encouragement of activities that increase the spread.

Yes! What I get from it is that most of us are basically going to get it and we try to spread it by taking isolation measures to flatten the curve. This is in hopes that everyone that needs help can get help to keep the mortality as low as possible. If hospitals are overrun the mortality rate will go up. Most of the world had time to see it coming now. Let's hope the measures are effective.

For example in Italy. Their % death seems very high. I think way more people are infected than the stats show. The healthcare system was surprised and overwhelmed so, I assume they are not testing people that feel sick only the ones that are really bad.

The pressure on health care is way too high to have any actual data on the people infected.

For many years I have looked so weird with my little bottle of 70% alcohol in the gym at all times. Now shelves empty. Dang it.

I really wish we could just fast forward and get to it, whatever "it" is.

My mind is racing with the uncertainties and the potential as well.

@lowtek analysis is pretty rational. Don’t insult his contribution, he is pretty accurate is most the things he’s saying.
Yea @lowtek is one of our most valued voices on this forum.

On another note make sure you take extra good care of your parents and grandparents, but stay away. I told my parents to stay home and that if they needed any supplies I'd get it and leave it in their driveway. I'f much rather get sick then allow them to. And as much as you want to visit your loved ones who are over 50 or 60, it's best to just let them isolate. Even if you're not sick. Again people are contagious before they start showing symptoms.

I'm not gonna lie this whole thing has been really upsetting to me mostly because I have a parent with an autoimmune issue and in their condition if they get sick I almost know for a fact they're not gonna make it through.

I dunno, I hope the US has this under control the way it seems.

Same thing here-- my mom is older and asthmatic. I'm way more worried about her than myself.

A postive is that the community seems to be pulling together around here. Since schools are closed, restaurants have offered to make and bring out to your car sandwiches if you can't feed your kids. People are buying things online or buying gift cards to keep local businesses afloat that depends on foot traffic. There are FB groups popping up where people can swap what they have in excess. There is still a sense of panic in the air but for most people, they just want their loved ones to be safe and they are willing to help if they can.

The capitalist me is again torn. A part of me says..."hey, if this person was smart enough, acted fast enough, was willing to risk enough to get a ahead by stock piling a product to sell later, good for them."

BUT...

The human in me says price gouging is wrong. Making a "reasonable" profit is all well and good - even to be complimented. But what is that limit?

This would be easy if I was a pure capitalist/socialist kind of person (although I doubt a socialist would be on this forum). Extremist views are always the easiest because there's no credit given to conflicting arguments. It gets hard when one lives in the more moderate world near the center.

I get what you mean.

But how would you even define price gouging... companies make huge margins every day. Is 100 percent price gouging?

50 percent?

My margins after everything at best where 100 percent. And factoring in packaging it the time to print labels etc.

I dont think that's an unreasonable profit.

I don’t mean to pry vigilante but I have a lot of respect for you and am curious on your views on helping those who haven’t prepared. I am a Christian and on one hand feel an obligation to lend a hand whenever I can, on the other hand I have my own family to look after and not knowing how long this is going to last don’t want to jeopardize them to help those who simply ignored this.

We'll be OK. My kids are OK. My immediate family is OK. I don't see this as apocalyptic (and if it was, so be it). We have a circle of immediate friends, and what I have they're welcome to. We will figure out the next chapters if needed.

My viewpoint is perfectly summed up by this old writing from C.S. Lewis, far more eloquent than I could ever be. It was written in 1948 after the dawn of the atomic age.

In one way we think a great deal too much of the atomic bomb. “How are we to live in an atomic age?” I am tempted to reply: “Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of syphilis, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents.”

In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sentenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented: and quite a high percentage of us were going to die in unpleasant ways. We had, indeed, one very great advantage over our ancestors—anesthetics; but we have that still. It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty.

This is the first point to be made: and the first action to be taken is to pull ourselves together. If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds.

Your comment about fear reminded me of something I saw recently... I thought this was pretty good.

C. S. Lewis' 1948 essay on the Corona Virus.
(Just replace "Atomic Bomb" with "Corona")
"In one way we think a great deal too much of the atomic bomb. How are we to live in an atomic age?" I am tempted to reply: "Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of syphilis, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents.

It's important to think logically, be prepared, and take necessary precautions, but being ruled by fear is pointless. Doesn't seem like many people here are in this boat, but so many people are if you just look around.

I live in South Korea, and it's funny because a few days ago my family in the US was so worried about me and telling me I should come home. Now they realize I'm better off here. Crazy how fast things can change.

Amazing. I just posted that, and then continued to read through this thread. You and I are on the same page. Your post sums my my position perfectly. Having been to South Korea many times, may God bless your town and that land and that country. I will return there again some day.

I tried to calm a friend recently and mentioned how it was when Aids was first introduced we persevered.

This was a great read....

These types of political articles aren’t helpful. We need to depoliticize this whole thing. I will state my bias, I think trump overall has been a good president. BUT.....I am not his cheerleader, and I will look at everything he does and call out when he does things I think are wrong.

I think many of the talking heads are doing a big disservice to people. Conservatives like Laura Ingram and Sean Hannity come to mind. They are both pushing that this is a media conspiracy. Have there been a bunch of media conspiracies about trump. YES, but that does not mean this is, and they need to cut out this crap.

There are tons of liberal news examples too. Anderson Cooper, Don Lemon, etc...they cant do anything but cheerlead against trump. Cut out this crap.

likewise this huffington post article, is the opposite side of garbage. From the beginning you can tell it’s a rip piece...referring to trump as hamfisted, all they can say is negative, negative, negative. Point out to me what things are good and why, point out what is bad and how we can make the bad better. its obvious from the beginning they loath trump, and their analysis is not meant to be accurate, just throw shade on Trump.

Here is how I see it, albeit I admit that I have the benefit of hindsight bias as I write this. We all know more now than we did days and weeks in the past

What trump has done bad (IMHO)
- Down playing the severity of things early on
- Pumping up early on this was a media attack on him
- not deregulating labs right away to bring testing online faster.
- not securing available masks and protective material for the medical system early
- Not getting Americans off the diamond princess immediately, there was no reason to leave people in a hot zone.
- Others

What Trump Has done right
- Cutting travel to/from China early. Remember that he caught huge flack from the left on this when he did it.
- working with industry leaders to build up infrastructure to deal with this
- quarantining people from the beginning
- working with industry leader to ramp up supplies and testing capabilities.
- Others

Look, we learn more everyday. Trump or anyone else are making decisions are making them with conflicting data and advice. In hindsight some of these Decisions will be good some bad. That’s inevitable.

let’s discuss what’s good and why, and what’s bad and how to improve it.

Comments like these make me wonder how well people know their neighbors. At least in the States, we have the Next Door app. Might not be a bad idea to hop on there and get to know a couple of the neighbors. This isn't a good time to be isolated. Like in VDPs situation, maybe a neighbor could get the supplies for him...

I've also had thoughts like Chris has. Want to have a conversation about the kids not seeing grand parents. Sad as that is to even discuss.

Also I wanted to say remember viruses can "live" on surfaces. Your family probably already knows to wipe things down with bleach water when you drop it. Just saying, just in case.

Funny weird outrageous this fine line of entrepreneurship era we are living in.

The same hand leading us in the fight for our lives and signing bibles...

I didn't have a problem with you pointing out misinformation getting disseminated by the government.

But now you're are starting to get political. The only thing your comment had to do with entrepreneurship was you said the word entrepreneurship. While I sympathize with your point, and your dislike of that man, please keep politics off the forum.

Margin has very little, if anything, to do with gouging. Gouging is relative to the "expected" price of an item/service. If hand sanitizer normally retails for $3.99 and you are selling for $20, that could be considered gouging, however it could simply be a product of supply and demand. That itself is the great debate.

It is not a dislike of the man...its a dislike of a damn liar putting peoples lives at risk. When did the lies begin? Hours after taking the oath on petty crowd size.

There was a Valedictorian giving the commencement speech in Kentucky.

He gave a awesome wonderful inspiring quote and shared it was from D. Trump. It got thunderous applause.

Then he revealed it was actually from President 44. To crickets..total silence.

It is not politics it never has been.

But I always appreciate civil debate and or commentary.

These types of political articles aren’t helpful.

Because YOU say so?

I found it helpful. A Leader doing something about COVID to help his constituents who put him there even against the status quo I found it very refreshing and calming.

I guess this is a unique fine line type of thread because the leader of this fight for our lives is certainly political and he abolished the very agency that fights Pandemics.
