Yeh ah no...

Landfill is the only solution to this Trainwreck of a post.

Yeah you're right, my intention was to learn from others, but I feel like maybe it didn't come off the right way and I apologize for that and for wasting your time.

Haha now you know why I asked for a perm ban! I have a lot of work left to do on myself, I can't even ask basic questions about learning from people without being taken the wrong way xD.

I'd like to address this one. Do you mean a 6/10 or 9/10 on the outside or the inside or in business?

See, I learned that having a 9/10 on the outside left me with only 1 option. That option was that I could only drive with the a/c on because if we had both windows down, the wind sucked straight through her ears.

I don't think this is landfill material.. he's trying to figure out who to learn from

I mean you should really just read the post then figure out if it was a good one

but if you want a shortcut, just look at their 'likes' to 'posts' ratios. they should have ~2x as many 'likes' as posts

we used to have a rep bank but i think MJ is working on reinstating that for the ew version of this forum

The "epic contributor" badge is generally a good sign too, which is a count of how many 'likes' they've accumulated and you get the badge once you pass a certain threshold

Also look at the "Gold" and "Notable" threads

Where do *you* want to go? What kind of life do *you* want to lead? Who do *you* want to be more like?

See who’s going where you want to go (or is already there), has a working moral compass, and is leaving bread-crumbs?

Are you following MJ? @SteveO? @Rabby? @AgainstAllOdds? There’s a multitude of others also doing great work and who’s posts are packed with wisdom, and who genuinely care.

Maybe see who I’m following?

Rather than your eight questions, I think you might be better served answering these:
  1. Who will I help?
  2. What will I help them with?
  3. How will I do it?

What is it the Buddhists say? Something about, "when the student is ready, a teacher appears"

No one person here or anywhere is going to be exactly what you need for any general category, even if you split those categories into 100 subheadings each. Sometimes you learn more from a Parked account, or a guy at the gas station, than you do from an Epic "like" factory about a specific challenge you're facing.

All depends on the question.

*edited wheat -> what... was driving me crazy

Oh yeah! Good idea for him to have a fantasy fastlane team! I'd like to apply for the water boy job. I have experience. I was once a water boy at camp and when I got hurt and couldn't play football. Please let me know if I get the position.

Well start here then....

Rather than asking for a ban, why don't you start contributing to others?

Learn from your mistakes and stop focusing on someone doing all the work nominating members who fit your exact criteria that you can then follow and obsess over all while neglecting finding your own path and doing the things that will eventually put you on the road to becoming the very person you want to be?

You can't change this shitty thread, but if you get to it, some day this thread will be a hilarious part of your success story.

Agreed. But, this is not a shitty thread. Everyone has a different perspective. This is a look into his head and thought process. Good or bad is a reference point that each of us have established from our experiences. What is good or bad? Well, nobody is getting hurt from this thread so it can't be bad.

The real question for you is what are you working on? Nothing wrong with asking questions but nothing replaces action.

Very true. When I said shitty thread I was using his perspective and not ours. He was disappointed in how it turned out (expectation vs reality) but in the future he can start ground up and this will be in the past.

Glad you pulled that out Steve!

it's really not... with some exceptions, most of the people who have received that badge have done it by posting quality content, and tons of people have 'thanked' them for it.

after you've gotten say, 5000 (forget the actual number) 'thanks' you receive the 'Legendary Contributor' badge

but again, it's a shortcut.. by no means a perfect system, but if you have any better suggestions feel free to post them

what do you think @MJ DeMarco

Not perfect, but adequate.

There are 31 people with the "Epic Contributor" badge and every one of them has an opinion I value, perhaps more so than a stranger, at least in the beginning. When someone posts 1000 pieces of content, you feel you know them a bit. And I've met many of them as well through past forum events.

Only twice in the forum's history has someone gotten the badge and held suspicious and/or questionable views.

So 2 of 33 is 6% -- those are probabilities that I can be happy with. Again, not perfect, but adequate.

No one is arguing that most of the people with an Epic Contributor badge are not great people. I've met many of them in person, and have even conducted business with a few.

Nevertheless, this is a bad way to pick to whom you will listen, especially when trying to find the advice that will take you up 1 (or even 10 levels).

There are at least two reasons that come to mind as to why relying on any sort of badge of honor is a bad idea:

Reason 1
There are 31 people with the "Epic Contributor" badge and every one of them has an opinion I value.

The key here is that you are relying on someone else's thinking and criteria to make your own life-altering decisions.

but if you want a shortcut, just look at their 'likes' to 'posts' ratios. they should have ~2x as many 'likes' as posts

As you say, it's a shortcut.

But there are no shortcuts when you are striving to be excellent.

If you rely on badges that are placed by people's names to determine who is awesome (and who is shit), you are allowing someone else to think for you at best...at worst you're relying on an automated (and game-able) system to do your thinking for you.

You won't be critically examining the source of the information, or if it is even relevant to you.

Authority is a powerful weapon. IMO be very careful to those upon whom you bestow it, and always question those who you believe have it.

Reason 2
This goes along the same vein as MJ's advice in another thread:

The absolute best book you must read is actually the book that will help you solve the problem that sits in front of your face.

Relying on a badge of honor imposed by another ignores the fact that the best advice is from someone who has the knowledge to help you break through your next big challenge.

For example, as much as I love so many epic contributors here, none of them are going to be able to tell me dick about my current biggest challenges since none of them have done anything remotely close to what I'm doing.

When reading the biographies of the greats (Rockefeller, Musk, Carnegie, Tesla, Alexander the Great, Marcus Aurelius, etc.) two things really stand out:
  1. They never let ANYONE think for them, except for themselves.
  2. At key points in their lives, they turned to others to help get them to the next level. People like Tesla had that backfire when their trust was misplaced. The whole name of this game is simple: Don't be Tesla.
