Finished it last night. Many nights I wanted to go to sleep early only to find myself still awake reading and reading. I would definitely read it again - and will.

This is how I was when I read TMFL in June 2012. I could not put that book down. I have it on my Kindle reader and every spare second I had I was totally immersed and consumed with reading that book.

Just found out about this book today. I can't wait to read it. If its anywhere NEAR as good as TMFL I know that it is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo EPIC!!!!

Thanks MJ. YOU hit the nail on to the head...many nails onto my head...and I'm getting dizzy!
Many years ago I was driving a shiny Mercedes Benz ML. My mother told me to sell it and drive a Toyota or Honda instead. She told me that I was too egocentric to drive such expensive car while others around me are poor......._____........????____Ever since my relationship to/with her is so estranged. I now understand why. (This is the very first time I pouring this out of my heart.)

Just finished the book for the first time. Gonna take some time to absorb it and then re-read the parts I bookmarked to get them in my head.

I only have 1 question:
Can you give me a step-by-step, foolproof way of making money online? I only have $4.99 to start because I bought a $1997 course on dropshipping t-shirts through Amazon FBA, but then I realized I needed their monthly membership for $197/month so now my money is running low.
Oh yeah. I need to make a bunch of money preferably by the end of this month cuz rents is due and a real entrepreneur don't do jobs, ya feel?

lol all jokes aside, Unscripted is AMAZING!

I loved your failure stories (I guess I'm sadistic, sorry), the tough love (much needed), and the actual "step by step" methods of doing stuff that provides value.

The $17 I paid for this book provided 1000x more value than the "entrepreneurship and business" courses at my college. Now it's time to take action.

Thank you, MJ.

Edit: 1000x more value

Just finished UNSCRIPTED today!

My most immediate takeaway? How different the entrepreneur mindset is from all of my natural tendencies.

I had to admit to myself that I am not a natural entrepreneur, (maybe from living too long with SCRIPTED programming), so I am very grateful to have this window opened to a new way of seeing opportunity and regarding value. Thank you, MJ.

Just reading through the chapters, idea building on idea, was immersive, like spending time in the foreign country of MJ's brain. The book made it easy to pick up the lens and see differently, and I know that repeated reading and, more importantly, practicing and executing on the principles, will only reinforce this.

I had a similar experience with TMF , but UNSCRIPTED was stronger and clearer for me.

I can tell that, in my case, this new and fresh perspective won't last on its own unless I choose to reinforce it and make it habitual.

It will take dedicated practice to retrain my brain, but it is doable, and necessary.

Just over halfway through but had to share one particular part that struck me-

"For example, there’s a busy street corner near my gym that *looks* like a nice restaurant location, or so it seems. For years, this cursed corner killed so many restaurants it’d make Jason Voorhees’s hockey mask smirk a grin." -following on from the mention of how people care about your product, not your passion.

You could literally have been describing a takeout restaurant near where I grew up. Perfect location on the corner surrounded by nice housing, on a busy road with plenty of traffic, both vehicles and foot. No competition nearby. And yet this location was like the grim reaper of business hopes. It just took down everyone who went near it.

Seemingly every year the cycle would repeat. It reopened with a blaze of advertising under a new name, with new owners, many of them well known, well liked people in the community. They mostly seemed sensible people who knew what they were doing. Big promises were usually made and the paper touted their new menu and high hopes. People wished them well. Nine months later they'd be out of business. A few months later the next victim was wheeled in smiling. This went on and on and on with only one exception in about 20-25 years.

The average owner/victim seemed to last about 9-12 months. "Roger" as we'll call him lasted over 10 years. Was he a genius? the world's greatest cook? A well liked pillar of the community with an affable nature that drew you into his business? No, he was a convicted sex offender of seemingly below average intelligence and limited bathing ability. Literally, everyone I knew that knew of the place called him "Roger The Rapist". He was easily the creepiest person I've ever met. I happened to be driving past it one day with someone new to town and this guy said to me "I can't put my finger on it, but the guy who runs that takeout place really creeps me out". He inspired both derision and fear. In a lawless society I suspect he'd likely have been publicly beaten to death by the community.

But I/we still went there. "Roger" would come out to greet you, you'd awkwardly gaze around trying to avoid eye contact as he stared at you with the look of a man who was liable to pull out a meat cleaver at any moment. Sometimes one of the teenage girls he had working there would come out and you'd try to give your order and resist the urge to say out loud what you were really thinking..."why are your parents letting you work here? Are they nuts? how can they not know?" etc. They didn't usually seem to work there long anyway.

It defies conventional logic that this went on and on for years and that I and so many others kept going back. I remember the weirdness of the situation, but what I also remember is that I've had chicken nuggets at countless places over the years and none have come close to Roger's. All of the subsequent owners were nicer, more inviting and obviously not psychopathically scary, they just didn't appear to be as good at running a takeout business or making food people wanted to eat.

I've just finished it. This reading is a brutal unplugging from the OS. Nothing more to say, except that it is definitively a 10x TMF . Mandatory read for all entrepreneurs imo, a complete system on its own. And it costed me only $9...

Finished UNSCRIPTED Last night, today sat at a coffee shop with my wife and explained the principles behind purposely NOT funding our retirement. The book really helped shift my frame back to "how can I create/add value today"

I still have a slowlane job, but it's a rare one with a decent income/benefit package a lot of flexibility and overlaps to build my freedom on the side. Long-term though, it's a 3% per year increase gig.. I can take my wins and leverage them on my own channels and create my exit raft.

So it's slow-lane during the day and fast-lane at night! And the wife is on board.

Thanks for the early release copy, MJ. I initially feared this wouldn't be as good as TMF but those fears were soon put to rest as I learned about The Script and TUNEF. This book is a well needed slap in my face. There were moments where I laughed out loud ("F*ck you" is a beautiful thing) and moments where I paused to critically think about where my life is headed. I'm probably the only person in Ghana who has read Unscripted as of now. That's going to change because I'm going to shout the gospel of Unscripted from the rooftops. Thank you MJ, I'm truly grateful for this.

@MJ DeMarco, thanks for this awesome book. Reading through it now.
I was wondering - for people who bought the physical book, is there a way to get access/discount to the electronic version?
I would love to keep one so I can easily take notes on it (would be awesome for reading at work).

Just thought I'd ask - thanks!

is there a way to get access/discount to the electronic version?

If you buy an Amazon print version, the Kindle version drops to $2.99.

As of now, there are no PDFs of the book.

The only thing in the guidelines I can see is:

"When we find unusually high numbers of reviews for a product posted in a short period of time, we may restrict the number of non-Amazon Verified Purchase reviews on that product."

Only 25% through so far, but really enjoying it. This is probably the first book I've ever read that didn't make me feel like an oddball. For the most part, I've lived an Unscripted life for a long long time. I don't watch TV, I'm not married, I don't even own a car. Among my friends, I'm surrounded by suburban mommy me-toos, and for a long time, I thought I should be one of them, because otherwise my future would be full of cats and loneliness. :jawdrop: Obviously, it's not, and there's perks to being the eccentric auntie. #1 being you can return the children to their parents.

Will post more when I'm done reading it, but MJ, I wanted you to know how much I'm enjoying it!

p.s. the part about 3rd grade and the car being from Santa Claus made me laugh.

I absolutely loved Unscripted . Going in I was frankly skeptical how much more I would gain after TMF , but it was terrific. Ironically my recent FTE was that I don't want to be an FTE (Full Time Employee) anymore. I took an Entrepreneurship class during my MBA classes about 12 years ago, but got little out of it. MJ's books should be the textbooks for such a class. In fact I think, after discovering TMF 3 weeks ago on a long trip to visit my mom in Alabama and now reading Unscripted , I'm a long way towards earning a much more valuable MjBA degree if you will, a course of study which will pay back many multiples over what an MBA returns and also result in far greater intrinsic benefits and personal freedom.

Just finished reading Unscripted . Another gem by Mr. DeMarco. Quite a coincidence that I was the reading the part about Tiger Woods when I found out he was pulled over for DUI.

Top three Entrepreneurial books I have ever read are

  1. TMF
  2. Unscripted
  3. Felix Dennis, "How to Get Rich"

Amazing book. Definitely a slap in the face in terms of what to do but specially what not to do. I love the format and the blueprint part which will really help.

Some days I felt like I was trying to convince myself that the SCRIPT wasn't so bad by invoking BS reasons... I felt really compelled when you spoke about your move and how it was the catalyst. I remember being so happy while living abroad in Mexico, which is something I am frequently thinking about.

Thanks MJ for the fantastic book.

What an amazing book. Greatly organized and spoken from the heart. I appreciate that MJ isn't depending on this book to make millions like other authors do so you're really getting the truth. Can't wait for the audio version to release.

I finished UNSCRIPTED a few days ago. And I've now read two thirds of it a second time.

I've waited til now to post about it because I just couldn't find the words to accurately express how I felt about the experience. I still can't, really. And I don't like giving fawning praise because it makes me sound like an arse-kissing twunt.

So let me post a few bullet point thoughts instead, and maybe the words will come as I write them:
  • It's really two books in one. The transition is a bit jarring, but I think it's awesome all the same. I absolutely loved the philosophical section of the book - and a part of me also loves that the world's most smug and irritating people would find it highly offensive! Pretty much sums up my view of the world, plus a few things I hadn't thought about before. And reflects it back to me in a way that "moves the soul".
  • I was expecting to find the execution part of the book - especially that covering the CENTS commandments - pretty boring, and a retread of what was already covered in TMF. That wasn't the case at all. Actually, the chapter on the Commandment of Need alone was way more than worth the price of the book. The concept of skewing value? Absolute gold. A systematic process for spotting a weakness in the market and creating something quantifiably more valuable in every single aspect. Well, there really will never be any shortage of profitable business opportunities if you take that information on board and use it.
  • Between TMF and UNSCRIPTED , you've grown hugely as a writer and as a person @MJ DeMarco. It's a much deeper book, with a more mature and reflective outlook and style. Great stuff.
  • I liked that I read it and actually understood everything that you spoke about, and how to actually take those concepts and apply them in business. Mostly, that's a reflection of my growth along the path. When I read TMF the first time, I mostly thought "this sounds awesome - what the hell do I do now?" Now I know exactly what to do. Still, UNSCRIPTED is a much more actionable book. Really everything you need to know to get started and keep going is right here.
So, most of those bullet points turned out to be full on paragraphs anyway. TL;DR: this is, hands down, *the* best book I've ever read. That might be because of its intrinsic awesomeness. That might be because it combines my two favourite things - entrepreneurship and the philosophy of freedom - and combines them into one awesome package. Probably a bit of both.

I buy everything on Kindle now. I sold most of my hardcopy books so I don't have to ship them when I move abroad in a month, or keep carting them around the world as I inevitably move around. I bought this on both Kindle and paperback. I'll be taking it wherever I go and displaying it prominently on the shelf. If not taking it off the shelf and reading a part of it every day as a potent reminder to stay on track.

Thank you so much for writing it.

"When we find unusually high numbers of reviews for a product posted in a short period of time, we may restrict the number of non-Amazon Verified Purchase reviews on that product."

Good example how bro-marketers ruin it for the rest of us who are legitimately trying to create value.

Your review means a lot to me. Not just because you found it *the* best you ever read, but you found it relevant to life in the UK. I was a bit fearful that I wrote it with too much a skew toward the US (talks about the Federal Reserve, IRS, and other US based monolithic structures).

Thank you for sharing, and for letting me know I didn't strikeout with my friends across the pond.

Finished it yesterday and am now going back through and jotting down some notes. The book literally laid out actionable steps and I will be following through with my new business that creates value. I'm now kinda glad that my parents shut down my money chasing venture. Live and learn.
Will buy a paperback version to give to my parents to read so that they will be able to see where I'm coming from and hopefully let me start a fastlane business.
Thanks MJ!
