Say I have a pile of debt, that's unwieldy but no unmanageable. Say $20,000, with $15k in low interest student debt and $5,000 in consumer. I have decent job, though it took me a while to get there, but my credit is shot to hell and back. No mortgage. No car payment.

Now say there is a coaching opportunity for building a business, with a great mentor (you probably already guessed I'm talking about foreverjobless.com). It's going to cost $4000. I think the ROI is great. I want to participate, but lack the cash on hand.

So, I'm going to ask the most wonderful hive mind on the internet: How can I raise the money for this in the next few days, with the least financial pain, least crazy interest charge, and least % chance of being found dead in a gutter.

Edit: What the hell, le'ts say $5000. I need startup capital.

If you're 20k in debt and want 5k more debt for an amazing coaching opportunity you found online, you may want to sleep on the idea.

Those types of programs specifically target customers in your situation and it can seem like that answer to all your problems but if I was you I would look into finding alternatives.

Good in theory. But there is always an emergency. Or someone needs something. Or whatnot. Plus, I live in an area where people with average jobs like mine take out million dollar mortgages. A $5000 self investment seems like fiscal responsibility in comparison to most of the continent.

That aside, I've looking for advice on how to do this, not whether or not its a good idea.

Don't compare yourself to other people that are up to their balls in debt. It's like bragging about being the smartest kid on the short bus.

The best $5000 self investment you could make would be 100% commitment to paying off that high interest debt. I know this from experience.

Just my unsolicited and possibly wrong opinion.

So many threads here on how to hustle up quick money.

Here you go...

Sell everything you got.

TV's, game systems, furniture, dog, old clothes, etc.

Everything except tools or equipment you can put to use that would bring more money than the sale of the item itself.

If you believe so strongly that Billy's opportunity is that critical to your success you do what you have to. Even sell your bed. Sleep on the floor if you have to.

Find odd jobs on Craigslist you can do over the next few days. Cut grass.

Or was you subtly looking for someone to loan you the money?

Why are you even still on here? Get busy.

I cringe reading your post.

It makes me cringe as well. Deeply uncomfortable feeling to borrow that much. But if I lose... what have I lost? I'm never going to be able to afford anything anyway without massive debt, so might as well go for broke. The other option of zen-like austerity has occurred to me, but that brings with it additional unpleasant circumstances (such as ending up single and alone).

Besides, if I was a good head-down, conscientious citizen I would probably have never started searching for a way out of the gilded cage that is the average North American life.

Anyway, I do appreciate your advice, and I'm not dismissing it. Might be trying to overcompensate for the life-caution I've displayed up until point, and will probably just keep following my current, financially stable plan.

You skip this opportunity and you hustle your a$$ off to pay off that 5k first, then get another 10k and take that straight to Bill when you are ready and ask for a spot on the next round guaranteed.

If you can't hustle up a couple grand, your not ready for coaching. Coaching is a super catalyst, not kindling.

Went away and thought about it. You guys are right, and it was a dumb idea. Sometimes I still slip backwards into old modes of thinking. I was feeling so desperate for escape today that I slipped into unproductive panic. Thanks for not pulling your punches. You guys really are the best.

Going to back to my original, more sane plans. Putting the work in and providing value.

Thanks for the swift reality kick to the head.

psssssss..... OP I heard you could sell bikes on Craigslist and there is a thread giving tips on it....Maybe you should check it out.

On planet earth, always (for now)
I'm glad you changed your mind.

I can understand where you were coming from, as I have also have some debt to overcome. But you know some of my debt came from that mentality (if I only borrowed money for this opportunity, I would finally get a chance to get out of debt)...the truth is that there is value in developing the discipline you will need to get out of debt and get the cash you need for this kind of opportunity.

There's a difference between people who just don't want to pay the money for a course, and people like us, who probably aren't ready yet. Someday soon we'll earn our stripes--by a process that will prove valuable when we are able to invest our money in our Fastlane endeavors.

What are your original, more sane plans? Did you learn anything from this?

Will you have $4000 available when the next opportunity arises or will you panic again?

You would not believe how many emails/calls I get from people when a massive layoff is announced. People all worry about losing their jobs and they think ecommerce is the solution to their problems. But then, they make it through the round of layoffs and I never hear from them again... until the next round of layoffs is announced.

You panicked because you thought this was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

That's just not true.

Have an abundance mindset rather than a scarcity mindset.

Opportunity knocks so often it's a drum-roll on your door, if your ears are tuned to it.

Pay off your debt.

Spend your money on diesel and coffee. (Search for the thread of that name.)

I will go out on a limb and say if you asked this question you may want to wait before dropping that kind of cash on lessons/coaching anyways. There are some precursory disciplines and knowledge you should have going into something like that to really take full advantage of it. Ask yourself if you honestly are viewing it as a "get rich quickly and easily" ticket. That will tell you what to do.

My current (original) plan is to learn copywriting, then use that to build money for an ecommerce venture while continuing to live and pay down debt using the income from my actual job. I've been through the Boron Letters (printed out and hand copied, with my own notes), and have just finished day two of Sinister Lex's 15 day challenge. I've been considering copy hour (which I can afford with cash on hand - no debt required), but I figure I can also build my own swipe file from scratch.

What I learned? HALT is real. Don't make decisions when hungry, angry, lonely, or tired. Do some necessary drudge work that you can do without thinking (like the dishes) and get yourself into a more coherent frame of mind first.

Wow. Someone actually listened to reason and changed their mind. I've literally never witnessed that on the internet.

Starting to hyper-ventilate from having my entire perception of reality challenged.

Make sure to re-find this thread and post something when you're debt free and your business is successful. Everyone would like to see it.

While I'm glad you have a plan, those things are really just following the status quo. You are still following someone elses plans and not thinking independently. You are doing copywriting because you can make money. You are planning am ecommerce venture because people here have posted about this success.

Opportunity is everywhere, as an entrepreneur you figure out how to close gaps and fill holes. You don't need to follow the rabbits down the hole because a few came up with lettuce. The fields are huge. Start thinking like an entrepreneur and less like a pack monkey.

It helps to get out and try things and make friends along the way. My network is what launched me and continues to brighten my horizon every day. But you can't connect with people of value if you are sitting still or following the same ol make money scheme.

Hmmm.... You may be right. It's worth some thought. So let me give my plans some more thought.

The copywriting venture is a way to earn extra cash that depends on my skills and time, and requires only sweat equity. Its primary purpose is to build income that I can use to actually make smart bets without putting my normal income at risk. Its secondary purpose is educational. Copywriting and persuasive writing seems like a very useful thing to learn, and I had similar success learning telemarketing over the summer. Let’s call this business the generator.

E-commerce is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time (because it seems the closes I can come to becoming a real life merchant-adventurer), but what I am actually trying to build here is a real business where time and income are disconnected. Let’s call this the (fastlane) vehicle.

This seems generator to vehicle system seems like a good one to me. Alternatively, I could look for a vehicle that I can build with sweat equity alone, but this seems limiting to me. I want to build my vehicle to meet the needs of a market, and most ideas will require some sort of start-up capital. It probably will be ecommerce (because it’s a big space and I think it’s cool), but I’ll take your advice and not limit myself to ecommerce at this juncture.

Now, as for copy writing, I really am doing it because it seems to work for lots of other people. But I don’t think there is shame in copying something that works, and there does seem to a genuine need for this type of skill.

But maybe there is another option for me: freelance technical writing. I know there is market for it, and it fits my current skill-set, experience, and abilities far better than copywriting does. I’ve actually done this type of writing for money before, and could start taking gigs right away without the need for further education. So this might be a better option. Plus, I can use what I’ve already learned from my copywriting to advertise my services.

Thank you @LightHouse! That was a very helpful comment, that got me thinking about ways to optimize my plans. Much appreciated!
