I have been frequently visiting the TFF in the last couple of days and I think having a mobile app that shows notification messages when someone quotes or comments on a thread we follow could improve the average user retention a lot more.

Went to the app store to find we don't have an app yet! What do you guys think?

I'm using a Pixel phone and I couldn't find it.
If it is something like a web app (A shortcut that still opens the web page) that you are mentioning, I think a native app could provide a much better UX.

There already is one. On your phone, if you open the website and click the navigation bar(hamburger). At the bottom it should say "install the app"

I look forward to MJ incorporating fastlane forum so that legacy member could buy shares of it to shoulder the cost of maintenance together, turning it into a community members co-owned entity. :)

Click the three dots menu in your browser. There will be be an option for add to home screen .

With how bizarre some threads get sometimes I am not sure getting notifications would be healthy lol. Consider it a perk to not have 'em.
+5 notifications from a thread which is about to be moved by MJ to landfill
+3 notifications because somebody liked your reply or found it funny
+6 notifications from two guys arguing over something in a thread

I would go insane.

I'm sure MJ doesn't want the added headache - you're talking about massive costs, app store compliance, developers to manage, etc...

In addition to this website already being highly mobile optimized, the type of long form discussion it encourages is not the ideal product for an app.

User retention is more about mindset and buying in versus spammy app notifications. TFF's competition is not quick-fix YouTube shorts or lifestyle gurus.

I used to work at Apple. Did a rotation in developer support. It would cost a minimum of $99/year to have an app in the App Store.

If MJ did put an App in the store, I’d fully expect it to be a paid experience.

That’s mainly because besides the financial cost, the time overhead to MAINTAIN apps in the store is basically a full-time endeavour.

Apple routinely “updates” the Swift language libraries.

An unfortunate (or maybe fortunate) side effect is that functions and libraries which worked before get deprecated.

So apps stop working until the source code is “updated”.

In the Apple app ecosystem at least, app development isn’t a “set it and forget it” proposition.

Requires constant attention from a developer to maintain. Meaning MJ would have regular expenses for the app to pay devs to keep it updated and stable.

Android apps are similar in that way I suspect. Less experience in that arena.

But android apps are easier to crack, from what my android dev friend tells me.

I mostly use the forum on a mobile, for years on an iPhone 5S. I had no issues, and prefer it to Facebook groups, Slack, Discord, Circle, whatever.

I turn off most notifications and mostly check my feed rather than the homepage.

I log in and log out multiple times a day and am in charge of when I log in. I wouldn't want alerts telling me or enticing me to log in when I'm busy doing other things.

I doubt I'd use a phone app.

Well, the community has spoken.
✅ Notifications are a distraction
✅ App maintenance can be an added inconvenience to MJ
✅ People are convenient with the responsive mobile website

My experience exactly. Mobile layout is pretty decent and easy to use, no need for a dedicated app for me.

Thank you.

As long as the website is mobile optimized, a mobile app is not imperative. Of course it might help, but the cost/benefit probably doesn't work well.

I never thought I could use this forum on my mobile, but it works just fine.

And I just put the shortcut on my phone and now I use it often.

Everything works fine for me. No need of mobile app, accessing Fastlane forum and Goal sumo is just a fingertip away.
In fact I'm writing this post with my phone

Just go to your mobile browser, search Fastlane forum and got to the site, press the three dots and press save this to homescreen. Done
