Got tired of making threads for all my brilliant/terrible ideas, so I'm gonna put everything here that doesn't have it's own thread from now on.

Becoming an MMA Fighter
After I left the mortuary, I started kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, and MMA. It's going well.

I rolled with a pro fighter this morning. He's the one with dreads in the video below.

How did it go?

I got choked out...a lot.

What a trip. This shit is hard. For 37, I'm getting in damn good shape tho.

I enrolled my daughter yesterday. She had her first kickboxing class and loved it. She'll try jiu-jitsu tonight. Now we have a daddy-daughter sport.

Man, it's crazy what you can do if you just say, "F*ck it, I'm doing this," and then do it.

The most valuable takeaway so far is how this gets me completely out of my head and heart, fully in the body for an hour. When I'm taking leg kicks or gut punches or seeing stars as my face turns purple...all I can do is focus on what's right in front of me. No worries about tomorrow, no emotions. Just pain and process.

That's an awesome update. Definitely high on the kick a$sery scale.

Please be really, really careful not to get injured. At this age, it'll take you ages to recover from some of the shit that can happen during hardcore rolling (kickboxing and stuff less so, though think about your brain when you get hit).

I don't know any people who have been involved in martial arts for decades who don't have f*cked up bodies. Ask @Timmy C.

This is why I personally gave it up though I still understand the allure and sometimes wish to come back.

It's always nice to see an entrepreneur improving the skills required for running their business:

Keep up the good work, @Lex DeVille

I'm sure this new addition will drastically improve the customer experience.

If 'let's find out' were a person, it would be you.

Always trying new things in life and business.
Just don't want my obituary to read, "Lex lived a good life, the end" like everybody else's.

Part of my business is adult content, so what you're saying isn't inaccurate. The better my body looks, the more dollaz in my buttcrack!! Plus, the ability to choke people out with unique techniques is big turn on for fetish slaves. Dolla dolla billz y'all!!

Whoa, go you! That's a fantastic result for 37 year old IMHO. I'm similar age and would not ever consider signing up for an MMA fight. Talking about doing tough stuff and living outside your comfort zone. Inspiring.

I've been wanting to get into boxing for years now. This post might push me over the edge.

A truly motivational post! Putting yourself in a tight spot is worth it and is rewarding! I always look up to guys like cyclist Geraint Thomas who in his late thirties won 2nd place last year and 3rd this year in Giro d'Italia or any of the MMA fighters +35 winning against the younglings. After crossing 30 years of age these examples keeps driving my mindset in a positive direction while doing sports.

Same here!
They tell me the hardest part is just showing up. A lot of people sign up, and never show up for a class.

So far, everyone I've met at the gym is awesome. It's so easy to make friends.

It was pretty scary the first day, and it helps if you check out the gym before you go so you get a feel for the vibe.

I went with the best gym around, reputable coaches, and very friendly approach with new people.

My gym cares a LOT about students not breaking each other. They put technique first, power later, and zero ego.

Yeh, it's not great for your body, but it's great for your spirit. I think starting at a later age is even more risky though, as you won't have the technical skills that enable you to get injured less. I avoid alot of injuries now as my technique is good, and I am smart about how I train.

When you are just starting out, you have no idea how to train properly, you will be what we call a ''spazz''. You are the most dangerous person on the mat, you are the biggest risk to yourself and others, but everyone goes through that.

Not many people stick with it for the long haul, but I guess the same could be said about most other activities. I guess if you really love it, you will keep doing it.

For me, the cost has been worth it, but I don't know if I will still say the same another 10 years from now, with further wear and tear. My fingers are starting to look gnarly as well due to all the grappling. They are all bent and crooked. it's not that painful, but I am noticing early signs of osteoarthritis, and the pain is starting.

My knees can subtly move in a vertical direction, they ain't supposed to do that, but i guess years of doing leg locks, all that stuff they get a bit messed up. its not painful, so i guess its fine?

My shoulder likely won't be the same again and is chronically painful as I have touched on in other threads.

My neck is all out of whack from having people grab it, but I have corrected it a bit with certain exercises.

Guess I am a glutton for punishment though, as I have entered the National Jiu-Jitsu Championships in August at Albert park stadium in Melbourne lol.

Cool, Lex. I love your persistence and your "keep fighting" attitude. You're really influential and motivating. I've been following your threads for a few years here and enjoy them.

One thing I want to say is that I think you've always been bright and have had lots of great ideas and you've been successful in a lot of them. But I've noticed a change in you.

I don't know what is going on in your life but a part of me thinks you may be chasing money/success a little bit more. Maybe deep down there is a part of you that has lost some of your confidence and belief in yourself. Don't take any of this the wrong way. You don't even have to answer to it or acknowledge anything.

The reason I say this is I have been experiencing similar and my behavior has somewhat mimicked what I've been seeing from your posts over a time period. I may be way off. But if I am not, just know that you have the skills, heart, and mindset to be successful and valuable.

For me, I am 44 and have not had any major successes. And I sometimes feel like I am running out of time and a part of me is trying harder to prove I am valuable/successful. I am focusing more on external rather than internal.

Anyway, good luck on the new sport. I'd love to see some of your MMA videos later. I did some Krav Maga a few years back and want to get back into it. I also did some kickboxing. I loved both of them for all the reasons you've stated. You also feel a sense of belonging and part of a team/group when you are training with others. It's a physical, emotional and spiritual thing.

There's roughly 75% chance I'm going to die eventually. So I might as well take the risk while I can. On the other hand, each day lived is one day closer to immortality. Medical technologies will fix most injuries in the future, and I don't think we're far away from huge leaps in that area.

Yeh, it's not great for your body, but it's great for your spirit.
This reflects my experience so far.

I think starting at a later age is even more risky though, as you won't have the technical skills that enable you to get injured less.
That's probably true, but I am taking things slow and careful.

Guess I am a glutton for punishment though
This is definitely true for me lol.

I don't know what is going on in your life but a part of me thinks you may be chasing money/success a little bit more.
TBH, I don't really care about either of those anymore. I don't even care about building a business. Mostly, I just do things that catch my interest for a while and see how far they go.

I don't plan to become a UFC champion or to make money with this sport. I posted here because I enjoy sharing the journey, motivating others to do the things they want to do in life, and hopefully offering some insights along the way.

Most importantly, I never want to look back on my life and regret something that I didn't do when I had the chance.

Tell me more about the Adult content. Sounds interesting as well. Good luck with the MMA. I used to do it in the 90's when it was up and coming and it was some hard stuff.

It's mostly fetish audio content now, but I create YouTube videos and put my fan site link in the description to funnel people back the site to sign up.

Girls reached out about doing partner content, so I planned to get back into making boy-girl videos. Then I started dating this chick and she shut that down fast.

When people sign up for my fan site, they get access to longer content than what's on YouTube, plus they can engage with me a bit more, make requests, etc.

This is awesome.

Over the past couple weeks I had a lot of takeaways from fighting.

Jiu-Jitsu is Painful
Jiu-jitsu leaves me feeling sore everywhere and pretty stiff too. Yoga helps a lot. Cold showers help. Stretching, massages, using the roller...all the things help and I need them all afterward lol.

Conserving Energy is Important
I have strength, but knowing when to apply it matters. If I use too much when I don't need it, I burn up energy. Many times, I could leverage my opponent's weight or direction against them but I have to think about doing that and go a little slower to figure out how.

Fighting is as Much a Game of Will as Skill
Yesterday, I rolled with a power lifter. Probably a solid 75 - 100lbs on me. He was so much stronger and heavier that I reached a point where I was ready to tap even though I wasn't being submitted because I couldn't breath. But I held out a few seconds longer and...

...he rolled away. And I was like, wtf are you doing? That's when I realized he was out of breath and out of strength and his mind got to him before he could end the session. All he had to do was sit on me a few seconds longer.

Will is a skill I can do.

I know my mind's limits and I know how to go beyond. If I can slow down, breathe more, conserve energy, and remind myself that will is as important as skill, then I might be really good at jiu-jitsu because I can win at a game of wills even if not always at skill.

Kickboxing
Damn, it's a workout. Sparring for an hour is insane cardio. I like switching partners though. Fighting a bunch of different people at different levels reveals so many different areas to improve.

I fought a guy on Monday who was way better than me. I asked how long he'd been doing this. He said, eight months. That seems like nothing. If I can be half as good as him in eight months, I'll be a completely different person.

Potential Opportunities
Sauna / Ice Bath gym. Like, those are the main two services and I just pay $10 or $20 a month to use them anytime. I don't need all the extra shit and don't see why I gotta deal with overpriced bath houses or spas just for these services.

Saunas and ice baths are standalone equipment for the most part. So all you really need is a space to host them. Nothing fancy. Just let me come in and get hot then cold. Could add on other services like cryotherapy at some later point.

BJJ
Getting better. I can functionally perform the rear naked choke and arm bar and tapped out several people with both. I'm not great, but I'm starting to see offensive opportunities. My defense has slightly improved and I managed not to get choked out by a more experienced guy this week so that was nice.

Kickboxing
I sparred my a$$ off Wed. Went until I couldn't lift my arms. The coach had gone home. Everyone else was resting. There was one tall skinny guy who had limitless energy while I could barely move. I sparred him until I couldn't go anymore and considered it a will-building exercise.

From sparring, I learned to block side kicks, and about closing the distance with taller fighters. The skinny kid was probably 6 ft, so I had to dodge and weave to get close. I came home with sore elbows. After I slept, the inflammation went down and the pain went away.

Hours to Mastery
I've completed 11 hours of in-class training. Just 9,989 more to go.

Fierce Fighting Championships XXXIII
This is coming up on the 3rd. One of the heavy weights trains at my gym. I introduced myself and he invited me to the fight. So I picked up a couple of cage side table seats with his affiliate link.

Open Mat Friday
Last night was open mat night. I only brought boxing gloves, everyone else brought MMA gloves, so I sparred with what I had. Got to feel what it's like getting punched with a thinner glove.

Afterward, I hung around and got more tips from the heavy weight and other fighters. Our gym trains many guys who fight in FFC, so there's a lot of experience. They've seen me there lately, and asked if I plan to fight. I said yes.

It was cool to get some tips showing the difference between grappling moves in jiu-jitsu vs. MMA and why they're performed differently.

Dating
The girl I ran off to MOAB with...we're going on our second month together. She's a handful, but damn, she makes me feel alive. The kind of woman who'd support me in any choice as long as it's not a choice to leave her. We're complete opposites, but I'm head over heels for her, got me feeling 17 again. She's going to the fights with me next week.

Goals
- Work on slowing down and pacing for rolls and sparring
- Work on improving breathing technique
- Improve my triangle and guillotine for jiu-jitsu
- Improve my spinning back kick for kickboxing

Do me next!

What can I say? Your beliefs and actions seem pretty cohesive. There's not much cognitive dissonance in your threads for me to point out.

I could tell you to better stick to something or go back to church or do a better job picking a partner, but overall your life seems to be the life you want.

Just go forth and be more Lexy and maybe don't wear quite as much pink. Even if you are pulling it off.

Pink is on brand. These are my gloves.

They call me "the guy with the pink gloves."

Well shit...had this dude in a guillotine, and he came down on my body and something popped in my ab area. He's got a good 100lbs on me so it was pretty hard. I think I bruised a rib. I can't sit up in bed and coughing/laughing is painful.

From the videos I've watched, I could be out of training and workouts for a month or more. Super frustrated. Made an appt with my doctor to get a referral for PT.

I heard the same pop last week.

Note to self: Be careful surprise tickling your 16 year old son when he's lying in bed reading because he's 6'3" and when his knee comes up to protect himself it's gonna hit you right in the ribs. Hard.

Does your kid have any basketball skills?

The Next Day
I'm super frustrated over this injury. All this work I put in just to have it come crashing down in a single move. Now I have to figure out how to keep my head and body in the game despite the road forward. I'm guessing one month I'll *feel* like I can go again, but it will actually take two months before my body is fully ready. I don't want to start too early and re-injure my ribs and be out for another 2-3 months...

Training
This is my basic training plan for now. I'll do what I can, try to avoid overdoing it.

1) Deep breathing exercises to work the ribs
2) Planks and basic yoga poses for core strength
3) Light shadow boxing at home
4) I'll still go to classes, but coach says no sparring or rolling
5) Light drilling when I have the mobility to do so
6) Light cardio (bike? sauna? not sure yet)
7) Meditation and visualization

BPC-157
Anyone know anything about this? Coach said he broke his rib in the same place and he took BCP-157 peptide injection to help it heal. He showed me what he used in case I want to try it. Said it still took him 6 months to heal.

MMA
The night before the rib catastrophe, I went to MMA class. It was wildly different from jiu-jitsu and kickboxing. A lot of cardio. We did cartwheels, rolls, tumbling. We sparred using smaller gloves. I sparred a couple of pro and amateur fighters and was surprised by the power behind their moves.

Two different guys the same size as me did take downs that felt like they threw me through the air like a 200lb football player throws a 80lb cheerleader... Once I hit the ground, I was quickly reminded with face punches that this was MMA not jiu-jitsu class. Overall, hard class, good lessons.

What really surprised me was how big the difference in our fitness levels seemed. I'm in the best shape of my life, but this was a whole different level. These guys made it feel like I stepped in the ring with gladiators. I have a long way to go before I'm ready for a real fight.
